    I graduated from one of the major music schools in the country, went on to study a from classical voice teachers, and then I went on to become a teacher myself. it seemed like for so long my students were struggling to get through the bridge. and the only solution to the dilemma of expanding range was to either force chest voice up, or bridge prematurely into falsetto. while I was definitely helping my students progress, it seemed like it was a struggle to get them past a certain plateau. when I came across the curriculum presented by Seth Riggs and Brett Manning, it was like everything changed in my own singing in that of my students. three of my students went on to win first place in regional voice competitions. Others have signed recording contracts and are enjoying very fulfilling careers. In 2015 and 2016, we received the number one rating from Thumbtack as Pittsburgh's best voice studio. it became all too real just how much the discoveries of Seth Riggs and Brett Manning have revolutionized the singing industry. I have to wonder how long it will be before the vast majority catch up LOL.

      Thanks Stratcat Blue! When you get into Seth's background story, it's the same as yours. He had a bachelors and masters degree in vocal performance...and still couldn't get through his bridge into head voice without pulling. What he's developed and taught to Brett and many others is partly due to his frustration with academia not being able to help him do it. I sooo agree that Seth has revolutionized the singing industry and Brett, you and I and others like us are the beneficiaries in our own voices and hopefully our students voices. Thanks so much for sharing your experience.

      +Power To Sing Thank you as well. A few years ago, when I was deciding on which new direction to take my students, I came across Brett Manning's work, I couldn't help but notice how people were attacking the whole sls system, how controversial it was. I thought the perfect way to settle it, if the proof is in the singing as one critic of sls would say, then it will tell in the quality of students. I found that none of the people who attack Seth Riggs or Brett Manning can match their record of success. Their students had much better voices than the other teachers, which explained to me why S.R. and B.M. were so dispised. To make sure, I asked around for other qualified opinions. Everybody I asked said the SLS students had way better voices than that of the other methods. That was the point where sls became a big part of my teaching, and I have had nothing but massive success ever since.

      Stratcat, could you be more specific? I studied all the different "schools" of singing and just kept coming back to bel canto. In this case ("bridging"), I just cover the vowels as I go from vocalis into mix and then when I get to C-T dominant I open them up again (when necessary, obviously). It's easy to do, no straining, and sounds the way I want it to. What did your teachers tell you to do in this context? Thanks!

    Well presented. You can teach certain RUclipsrs how to do oral presentations. Some of their videos are excruciating in how badly they're paced and voiced.

      You weren't really hired, you actually paid a quarterly fee as well as paying for your education. It was up to you whether you chose to continue from year to year. The training program for teachers was discontinued the summer of 2016.

    Just playing devil's advocate, and maybe I'm wrong, but didn't Hayley Williams damage her voice while under Brett Manning's guidance and switched to a different singing methodology which saved her voice? Is Brett significantly different from Seth?

      I don't know about Hayley's vocal problem. I'm glad she found help with her voice. Yes, with Seth's technique the "edge device" is eventually eliminated.

    The real question I have is why does SLS work so poorly for Metal? It seems as if it's something that is just catered to the gospel, broadway, pop, top 40, country and r&b. Ozzy is the only legitamite metal vocalist to study SLS and even he doesn't appear to be doing well anymore (in all fairness, past druge abuse & age are huge factors with him) But sls teachers act like they don't know shit about metal and critizise it more than try to educate themselves on it. It's disappointing.

    • @PowerToSing
      @PowerToSing  6 лет назад

      I really don't know enough about metal to even criticize it. Except that it seems abusive to the vocal cords. It's definitely not my specialty. But in all the meetings I've ever been in I've never heard anyone stand up and say negative things about metal. I have had a couple of metal singers study with me who wanted to work on non metal kinds of singing. Frankly Judy, I think the basic tenets of SLS have their roots in the bel canto singing style. So a teacher like me with no background in metal comes on board with SLS there's no real preparation to teach it. I guess it depends on why they are coming to see me. I can help them, but not with metal.

    • @judykeller7474
      @judykeller7474 6 лет назад

      Power To Sing Well, that unfamiliarity with metal seems willfull & that is what I'm getting at. I've never met an sls teacher that even tried to familiarize themselves with metal. It's just blown off as abusive & ignored in favor of the typical, banal, depthless "boy meets girl" top 40 crap because that's where the money is. The way I see it, any vocal pedagogy that is "genre limited", whatever the reason, is not worth studying. Who knows, maybe somebody reading this might set any prejudices he may have about heavy music genres aside, give learning about metal a chance & end up even more succesful by doing something with sls that no one has done before. ;)

    • @PowerToSing
      @PowerToSing  6 лет назад +2

      One thing we haven't really addressed is SLS is biased toward a more bel canto approach to the voice. I can really help any singer in any genre if that is their goal. And I've had several metal singers that wanted to work on that part of their skill set and it worked out well. But if I get a singer who wants me to teach them metal or scream, I'll refer them to Melissa Cross.

    • @PowerToSing
      @PowerToSing  5 лет назад +1

      @Mike S It's likely you and I define bel canto differently. SLS doesn't try and create any specific kind of sound...other than what is natural for the singer's voice as it relates to their spoken voice. Some singers who studied SLS who I don't think are too light or thin are Amy Lee, Evanescence, Michael Jackson, Ozzy Osbourne. Rather than stretch out the chest and pull it too high, I prefer to develop the head voice so it sounds strong and powerful. But it takes longer in my opinion. But it will protect the singers voice for a lifetime of singing. Of course, all of this is my opinion, with which many will disagree.

    Seth unfortunately comes across as pompous and arrogant. So from the start, he gives off a bad vibe. One size fits all does not apply to everyone. He has the education and results to back things up. But humility is a virtue that needs to be adopted and practiced more.

      On a personal basis, I've never experienced that fortunately. In fact, I've experienced him rather the other way, very empathetic especially when working with my voice...and others too. I've heard him tell stories about himself where he was aggressive an in the face of someone...but I never experienced it firsthand.

      Personally I think his students would know that best. Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Barbra Streisand, Bernadette Peters, Madonna, and 110+ other grammy winners + 4 Metropolitan Opera regional contest winners. 100's and maybe 1000's of other students and teachers trained. When you have accomplished so much and been at the top so long, there are always haters. His work speaks for itself.

      +Power To Sing you really hit the nail on the head. in the entertainment industry, the ones who are most often attacked are the ones who are secretly most respected, feared, and envied by their critics. if this method of voice training was not effective, how could the critics explain why Seth Riggs was called in two train Grammy award-winning singers in the first place? Neither can the critics explain why he and Brett Manning got raving reviews after the fact.
