  • In this video I discuss getting past "Vocal Plateau" - Where singing students get stuck and can't keep improving. Watch this video and learn how to get past Vocal Plateau!
Vocal Plateau - Why Am I Not Getting Better At Singing?
Often times people get to certain levels of success in their singing and then just can't seem to take it any farther.
I personally compare that to the person that has a personal physical trainer that does not know very much.
At first the trainer seems to be really helping but since that trainer has limited information (or maybe not even correct information) that trainer cannot take the singer farther than the limitations the singer is experiencing with a vocal plateau. Interestingly, I see vocal coaches on RUclips claiming to take singers beyond their vocal plateau and yet those coaches cannot do it themselves. If a vocal coach cannot demonstrate it themselves and take themselves beyond their own vocal plateau, and they show no students being taken beyond their vocal plateaus, please don't deceive yourself into thinking that they can do that for you.

I think all of us, who been fatihful followers a few yrs, have that pivitol moment we can point to where the AH HA! was finally revealed, and for me it was the vowel mods. Here lately, you've been going more indepth on key issues LIKE the vowel mods, diaphramatic suppport, head/chest mixing, so its been like a gift that just keeps on giving. It keeps me ever vigilant when coppin a NEW tune thats a bit high and the NEW notes, that land on troublesome vowels of the past, I rest easy knowing that help is just a click away! For an old road dawg, who never "had' to sing a note 73-2000, and never intended to,Im VERY grateful!

Wow.. when I watched this I could actually feel how wrong I am singing. Talking about tension here... Especially the part where you talk about the "high note" as if it was a mountain to climb. Just listening to you pointing that out made me realize that this is something I really have to work on! Thanks for making these kinds of videos!

You are the best coach Ive ever tried. As a baritone that i man, never thought to sing high notes, nowadays i can sing some Chris Cornell stuff and feel like doing it better every day! Thanks, just got your course like 10 months ago and im trying level 3 excercises, seems that in maybe a year will be in the place ive have been dreaming as a singer. Greetings!

Ken, so much respect... you actually use your voice just as you teach. You are right, lots of RUclips channels 'teaching' singing. However, very few can actually sing as good as they claim. If I can't learn from the 'teacher' with real life examples, I am wasting time and money. Thanks again.

Thank you Sir. Your classes are the real deal. I honestly don’t have a lot of time to practice with kids and living in an apartment. But, let me say, the info you provide and examples that give contexts to your teaching super helpful. I’ve improved so much on minimal practice. If I had the time to put more time into it I can only imagine. I will work with my time management and get better. But wanted to say “Thank you”. Great stuff.

You are so right, Ken, vocal athletes. I liken it to you tune and practice with other musical instruments, the voice is no different! Some songs are a stroll, some are a sprint, some are a marathon! You have to train for them all, although the stroll is really easy now! 😁

I top out around G#4 or A4 in mix/head voice, but used to get to a B4 or C5 back in the day when warmed up. My disconnected/breathy falsetto only gets as high as a C5 now if I'm lucky on a good day. I used to be able to get to an E5 or F5 in disconnected/breathy falsetto but the upper limit gradually came down in pitch.

8:04...Exactly. On stage is all harder. After practice are vocal chords OK. But after concert (with same songs) is voice almost ill. Is it weird psychological effect from tension of all body.
Also when I go to high note, I imagine the candle near mouth. And flame must stay. I decrease intensity and happens paradox. The high note is easily sing. Even is more pure, more rounded with bigger resonance effect. High notes are more intenzive for micro always. With weaker intesity is possible preserve same distance from micro. Or almost same.
I do best in the song San Francisco (on my channel)

Worrying about the audience makes you tense and tight, forget about the audience and sing for yourself, then ironically the audience gets a better show as well

I think my problem is I have to work so hard on the technical aspect that i feel like I can't put my soul into it like it is going through this filter of my head. And then I can't feel the music like I want to and really express myself. But then once in a while a new technical ability presents itself, for example recently I started using the space at the back of my mouth for resonance - just started happening, and then yeah, I can express myself and really sing! But it doesn't last. My voice muscles seem to get worn out or something. Sometimes my best singing is after I've been sick and couldn't practice. LOL
