    Sjo Sterling, what a great resource you just put out... For me the last 30 seconds of this video changed everything about what I thought about learning to sing... Love your content... LOVE your voice... and btw... your interview with Chris Liepe was one of the best, most enjoyable RUclips videos I have watched on your and Chirs' channel combined!! Just keep on being Sterling... we love you!!

    Never really feel compelled to write comments on videos but I would like to give you a huge thank you. I am a drummer/lead singer in a cover band and was really struggling with losing my voice during shows and longer practices. I’ve binged and rewatched your videos over the past month and have made more progress over that time than I have in the past two years singing. It’s insane that this quality of content is free. You deserve all the success. I would take lessons if I could afford it. From one obsessive (on the spectrum) person to another, thank you again for all your help and openness to talk about and explain these techniques in a way that’s easy to understand.

    I recently learned to sing only because of this method. And once you understand how this really should be done, your voice opens and stays healthy. So If you can't sing a higher note for example, it's very important NOT to use strength but to relax. At first the note is quite silent but after weeks of practice it starts to sound louder etc. but only because you're relaxed and can control the note.

    Been trying to sing for years. After watching this video I realized I have stiffness in my vocal muscles. I don't know how to describe it. But just like the balloon example. It's like I couldn't move my vocal chords up and down or wide or thin enough to make singing sounds. This video kind of help me connect with those muscles somehow. I'm learning how to move them up and down which has improved my singing greatly.. Thank you!

    • @SterlingRJackson
      @SterlingRJackson  Месяц назад +1

      I’d start from speaking voice. Move your voice around as similar as you would speaking. Then start trying to add the diaphragm in. We all speak on pitch. Some more than others and some higher and lower. There doesn’t have to be a big separation with how you’re experiencing singing vs speaking in your voice. If that makes any sense.

    Hello Mr. Jackson. I am an OLD guy singer. I have always struggled to sing, with any real quantity, quality, or consistency. I have a decent voice, but after just a few minutes (and sometimes LESS) of me "singing," I start to cough. I am NOT a smoker. I realize now, that this is almost certainly because I sing, about 100%, from my throat. I have heard for years, about using the diaphragm, but it just never seemed to work for me. After watching your videos, especially THIS video, I now feel like there is HOPE, for me. I DID get light-headed, doing the breathing exercises, but hey, you gotta start SOMEWHERE! Thank you for presenting things the way you do, so even an old FART like me, can learn from it...

      I wonder if it is a throat chakra issue. We all have restrictions in one chakra or another, often all of them lol. I think these breathing exercises help with balancing the energy flow in our bodies as well. Singing is literally a form of meditation when done right.

    I usually don't comment much on videos but this has been so impactful that I just cant help but thank you from the bottom of my heart. (And prolly patreon soon)
    I've worked with my voice for the longest time for a bunch of different reasons. Voice acting, singing, changing my everday voice.
    But especially while singing i was always extremely prone to straining/tensing up really hard when going even slightly out of my speaking range. Usually more extreme-ish techniques like belt left me coughing after 20 minutes of practice. (Somehow, I never got hoarse) And had a huge 4 note hole in my range where my bridge was.
    I didn't know for the longest time wtf was actually wrong till I stumbled on ur video about singing in mix/across your bridge. Where you show how beneficial it is to instead back off and stop struggling.
    Now adding proper breathing from this one, made me seemingly magically able to sing 3-4 notes higher, without even a hint of struggle.
    It feels almost weird singing without actually feeling some kind of muscles working constantly :O
    Thanks so much again, you're awesome!

    the worst part about singing is that even tho you might have a mind-blowing revelation about your voice one day, chances are you'll forget how to do it the next day 😭 but i will say that through consistent practice, i keep coming back & back again to this *exact* revelation you talk about here. and the more i come back to it, the more it's starting to become a little second nature!
    anyway, thank you for being the vocal coach i trust most on youtube. it's so exciting to see the things you talk about be proven in my own singing journey, makes me that much more confident i'm on the right path. hope you're having a great day 🫶🏽

    I hear all these coaches out here in RUclips land and not one has ever mentioned the singer’s secret weapon - sinus rinsing. You get double the sound and resonance for half the air when your sinus cavity is clean and open. Plus, no colds, and warm up time is reduced remarkably. This guy sounds good, but I hear that slight strain on the folds that isn’t there when the sinus cavity resonates properly. Want to have your voice ring like Micky Thomas’? Sinus rinse. Twice a day. After a week, you won’t believe the difference. Not sinus rinsing once you’re used to it is like not wiping your butt after taking a dump.

    I find it interesting how you usually tuck your chin in and drop your forehead forward while going higher. Most teachers advocate keeping a perfectly straight neck and upright head posture, and some even say you should tilt your head up slightly for higher notes. Not implying that you or that they are wrong btw. I believe that the forward head motion you do helps relax the laryngeal muscles.

    • @SterlingRJackson
      @SterlingRJackson  2 месяца назад

      You can watch so many great singers tuck their head down while singing higher but it can depend on certain ways one is going about singing. Thanks Sterling can I ask how much air you breathe in? Is it a quick gasp or do you feel full? Something I have noticed lately is that if I breathe out all my air then try to sing I immediately relieve all my tension. It's like the tiny amount of air that shoots in just before I phonate is more than enough to sing any phrase followed by short gasps to top up. I think all these lessons/videos showing you to take a deep belly breath give the wrong impression of how much Air to take in which actually causes immediate constriction

    • @SterlingRJackson
      @SterlingRJackson  2 месяца назад +1

      The constriction your mentioning sounds like too much air or too much air still in the upper chest. You’re correct in that we don’t need that much air to sing. So, no, never taking in big amounts of air necessarily. Whatever is comfortable and making sure it’s comfortably into the diaphragm. Hope that helps a little. It’s all a learning process

      I think i may be stuck with an underbite that overly tenses my neck but I'm not sure.. I feel like my front teeth are too far back and limiting movement of my lower jaw. Does the lower jaw move forward when you expel your voice?

    Omg but my diaphragm is sooooo weak - ugh! These exercises take so much out of me - is that normal?

    • @SterlingRJackson
      @SterlingRJackson  3 месяца назад

      If you cough or laugh it’s diaphragmatic and not very difficult. Start by mimicking that. It shouldn’t take too much out of you. Sounds like you’re working too hard.

    Any advice on why I burp so much when I sing for a while? Am I taking in too much air and not expelling it properly? Am i doing something wrong or is it just me?

    • @SterlingRJackson
      @SterlingRJackson  Месяц назад +1

      Well, do you do that normally? If you’re changing something from the point of speaking to singing, you should continue to analyze what those things are. Breathing into the diaphragm can cause burping and often does for me even in videos. But it doesn’t usually continue the whole time. You don’t need a lot of air to sing. Don’t feel like you need to keep gulping in air and if you are, you are most likely not breathing from your stomach but instead your upper chest. 😊

    Dude, I've been singing two years. Every time I've had diaphragmatic support taught it's been through sit ups.
    Except the one time I watched Michael Bolton get taught with a resistant band, that one kind of helped too. The higher up he sang the more he lifted the resistant band.
