Trigger warning for loud sounds towards the end of the vid.
This was entirely edited, and was supposed to be exported, in 48fps, not 50. Funny thing is, Premiere simply doesn't allow custom frame rates in its export window, despite supporting it as a sequence setting. I could have exported the Premiere file into After Effects and added the sequence to the render cue, but I couldn't because AE threw me an error every time I tried. That, combined with the legitimately unbelievable amount of bugs and errors and crashes left me feeling so exhausted and numb that I ultimately decided it was worth sacrificing one 25th of a second's worth of timing here and there. If you catch any editing errors, that'd be why. Oh well!!

Fantastic rant, I love it! And you're absolutely right. I love how you underline the intent of the artist. Those who would seek to replace artists with machine learning and AI clearly don't understand what art is for. Replace stuff that people don't want to do, or can't do. But people get joy (and their livelihood) from creating art, and they want to do it. It's one of the things that make us human. I'm no Luddite, and I love using new tools to create my animation. But when it starts to encroach upon the fulfillment that I get from creating, then no thanks! You might argue that this is just interpolation and chill out. But my response to that is just wait, this is just getting started.
Damn, was not expecting this guy to comment!

Thanks so much for sharing your perspective! And for commenting at all lol. You're an inspiration
I love you James Baxter
!!!! JAMES BAXTER
I love how the title has "[4K 60FPS]" just so the algorithm targets the people who watch those kinds of videos.
Defeating the computer at its own game!
And then the video is capped at 50 fps looool
And I assumed it worked because rn it has 4.7 million views
@@BertoPlease That makes no sense, is he in the UK?
@@BertoPlease It's at 50 cause its the double of 24. It's a joke (maybe), plus he animated his stuff at the correct framerate while being able to show the interpolated footage as well.
As an animator who loves doing in-betweens, smudges, action choreography, and impact frames...
Yes, I also find it very insulting.
Oooo Sad-ist :o
>Dream
lol
Oh hi I was not expecting to see you here :'D
My putting my comment here
you don't need to tell us that you do action choreography. that's literaly all your recent uploads(i meant that in a nice way :) )
Low FPS animation has a very nice, cartoony charm to it.
High FPS animation gives off energy of something that has been worked hard on, and should be taken seriously.
Low FPS animations that have had their FPS boosted by an AI make me feel like I am experiencing eyeball cancer.
from what i've seen, there's this one guy called Neobrane who does these kinds of things, but I'm assuming he does some manual work to make it *actually look good*, and not be a blurry mess
Interpolated animation is like picking up a good-looking strawberry, and when you bite into it, it's uncomfortably soggy.
Why is this true
What a perfect description of those few seconds realizing "oh this feels- eeuegh"
no pls that's so disgusting 😭
As a translator, I vibe with this video whenever someone asks me why I ask money for something Google Translate does for free.
Lol, anyone who thinks Google Translate is accurate definitely isn't fluent in a second language.
@@christopherklute1606 aaaaand that's why I'm making an effort to learn Japanese! Though, sometimes a robotic translation works too- if applied right.
@@user-im9zp4yp9x Yeah... and it's not going to be Google Translate, it's going to be commercial AI-based translators trained on a specific domains such as "computer science books" or "Shakespeare".
@@clray123 The reason Google translate doesnt work as well as it needs to for human standards is because of the model it uses to translate. They use transformer models, which are giant networks of what are called attention matrices to try to be able to understand language and especially context. And with hundreds of millions of datapoints and months of computation time spent training on the most powerful supercomputers in the world these models can only get somewhat close to being accurate. And these models are approaching a limit as to how good they can be, as in order to increase accuracy for Google translates model by 0.15%, the amount of data used must be doubled. They're experiencing diminishing returns. That's because they dont model language the way that language actually exists, the way that humans and linguists have been modeling language for thousands of years - by turning sentences into dependency trees. Using dependency trees and starting from a linguistic standpoint rather than a computational standpoint to model language the way humans understand it is the way to go to create a translation model that can exceed the current models capabilities with far less time, data, and resources.
Absolutely XD

Exactly. Vaseline is for eating, not video footage
@@condensed_sam finally, I can now ascend
2 years later and people still can’t accept how bad interpolation is
Ok like, to clarify, for 2D animation it's awful, but it's just a common thing in 3D, but in that it's all motion paths and Inverse Kinematics. However, that doesn't mean interpolation isnt a technical factor in how it works.
What I think is bad, is the loss of intention. 2D animation is all about each frame being intentional, an algorithm is non-intentional. It does not know technique or art direction. It is simply trying to replicate something, often poorly. The lack of intention is the problem, and obviously, that right goes to the artist, not someone else to hash on later. It was not done that way intentionally, so dont fuck with it.
@@KaneyoriHK i agree with this entirely, interpolation really only can work in 3D in an animation sense seeing as it's MADE to work with 3D alongside live action
@@FossyPickles Exactly. Like, just cause I use it for assisting in my animation, which it's done to calculate the motion of an object and ISNT done in post, doesnt automatically make me a bad artist. It's me using it with actual intent, not like these other greedy fellas who are just lying their way to fame
We all accept it's bad, but also accept that 60 fps would be much better than 24 fps, if done right.
@@VanFire87 60 fps is only better if it was *intended* to be animated that way, that and 60 wouldn’t be better, because believe it or not, higher fps ≠ better animation

I appreciate the whole video Noodle makes very good videos and with each video he not only grows his funny but also his animations even if he was assisted by other animators
i'm not sure but i think sometimes animators reuse frames or create their own custom "lip libraries" for all common sounds to save on time. I can imagine that this dude would just have to load an image for each mouth frame and that's it, though i'm no animator.
My favorite thing is when someone posts a fucking ruined, 60fps anime fight scene where ALL the punches have zero fucking weight to them

its kinda "ai"phobia...
@@yalmanmfp it's not a phobia, it's disgust
I genuinely believe that AI has a place in art, but it's no more than a tool to be used by artists themselves who already have a set vision
it can be useful in the right hands, but letting it take charge of the entire creative process is like building a house solely out of hammers, even if it manages to stand I wouldn't let my worst enemy live there
and using it to force animations into the wrong configuration, like 60fps, is like throwing said hammers at a pre-built house, with no concern for the horrible quality and thinking the result makes you an engineer
that's why most of it feels like the same repetitive, glitchy, overly greasy, nonsensical crap
the technology is impressive, but 99% of people have no idea how to use it
You were ahead of the times with this video. Ai became such a massive topic of conversation within the past year, I thought this video came out in 2023. Fantastic rants/analysis.
"60fps is good, when the animator intends it"
never have i agreed with something so much
I agree to a certain point. With higher HRz in media and technology it's often jaring for me to watch something old at 12 - 24 frames. It looks stuttery when watching something that was made for 60fps or higher then watching something that's old. Almost like bad stop motion at times. Dragon Prince on Netflix was like that for me even if people liked it, I couldn't get into it. But I do agree that an AI doing inbetweens is an inaccurate way to fix this.
@@Arkken most anime are done in 24 fps and it doesn't look jarring you sound like someone who wants to play a game in 144hz on a 60hz monitor

As a half-gamer half-artist, I can confirm the pain, and the fact literally only gamers care.
I mean, the whole thing can be viewed differently through the lens of a 3D artist. Some things Do look better in a higher framerate, however, it's not all black and white.
The real issue is just it's not intended for these to be at higher frames. Some just hop on a trend to try and get views. It's all such a joke
Same
Gamers are the new "I can't function without my coffee" people.
And not even all gamers. I've heard some people appreciate details like Monster Hunter games (at least in the PSP days) freezing animations for a frame or two when you hit a monster with a chonky weapon so you feel the impact more.
I think the people who only care about blindly maximizing framerates are the ones who need (and understand) them the least because most of what they play is more of a cinematic experience instead of something with super tight input timing. The reason gaming consoles have been running with 30fps by default for so long is because the console target audience doesn't really care that much, and games where it actually matters like fighting or racing games were just running at 60 anyway.
Oh my god this video is two years old... and here I thought it was brand new because (unfortunately) the thing is still going on... probably even got worse.
Still a great vid - still on point after 2 years.
Cheers!
I watched it when it aired and I can't believe it's been 3 years
Horror idea: everything is normally animated at 24 fps, but the monster is animated with an alternating 12/48 frames.
Honestly it would be a good way to make things look unnatural. Kind of like how all the mechanical bits in Treasure Planet were CGI and anything organic was hand drawn
See, this is a good use for it
If I ever make a creature from beyond our dimensional perspective, like an angel or eldritch being I'll try that out. I expect it will portray well

I think one of the worst things I'm noticing is how much of a deluge there is of anime openings with "60 FPS 4K HD" on the end because. they're ALL interpolated. I have to look for specifically the anime studio, because it is criminal how sometimes no original, un-interpolated version has been uploaded. it's all been fucked up using interpolation-

As a computer scientist, the problem isn't that AI can't do animation, it's that computer scientists aren't animators.
That's why the only program made for animators actually works, I guess. They probably either took in animators or were animators themselves.
@@chrisheartman9263 well, making a toolset is different than making a program that successfully creates something out of nothing. Toolset programs only need to know ''what'' to do, whereas somewhere in an AI it also needs to know ''how'' and particularly with video ''when'' to do stuff, making it severely more complicated.
Exactly. Ai is usually never the problem, it's how it's used.
Even in software engineering, people have said at some point code will write itself. That hasn't happened (at a decent scale anyway) because someone needs to actually design a program.
Same with animation. AI can't do shit if the animators don't set a solid foundation.
Anyway you look at it, AI can just be an optional tool for animators.

I am one of those gamers you mentioned, but I can 100% relate to how you feel because I grew up gaming at 60FPS. (Well, 50 because I’m Australian but that’s another can of worms.)
60FPS combined with simple gameplay resulted in VERY precise controls. The push for 30FPS because “It looks better now!” at the cost of control infuriates me to no end! And there are even “remasters” of games like Tales Of Symphonia that half the framerate!
What I’m saying is, the next time you get one of these gamer types saying “This would look better at 60FPS” tell them that’s like you telling them their game would look better at 12FPS.
They’ll probably have an aneurysm.

Yeah we really need to learn that high frame rates only really matter in games
I just don't get the obsession, but then I largely can't tell the difference and when I can the higher ones are jarring to look at.
But then I grew up on CRT TVs and prefer indie titles ( potato computers most my life and the rise of microtransactions), but outside that field most media isn't meant to go that frame rate. I basically have next to no experience with it so it looks like something is playing wrong when I do see it.
Leaving things as the creators intended is generally how I like things anyway, the only real exceptions being if you can't get it that way without spending an arm and a leg or it's not possible. Niether really applying to this.

This is the visual equivalent of “8D audio” remixes for songs where they slap random auto pan filters and reverb on an already mastered song completely ruining it
People really think they can make a thing, that was already fixed, improved multiple times and then released, better by adding a few effects or stuff, lol
I like 8d audio for the sole affect of me being in an empty room or the song playing from a far place, but I love the original more.
Oh, I understand now.
Omg so true
As a synesthete with enough damn spatial-acoustic processing BS going on to act like some kind of crazy-ass sonar and low-definition ultrasound just by existing near shit that isn't even making noise (why can I hear the structure of this filing cabinet?! As a gamer and an animation fan, I hate when people go, “hurr durr more frames”
Animation is an art form.
but bigger number = better
As gamer, bigger number when frames be bad news bears, because lag
I usually don't play on 60 frames even on my pc that can sure as shit handle it. I just don't feel a need for it. So I don't understand the constant push for more frames, and how "anything less than 60 is lazy garbage". Like unless you're paying at a competitive level in some game that's very reaction intensive, those extra frames don't do anything but look kinda pretty. Sometimes.
@@PotatoKingMike it just feels better, like a played a modded version of mario 64 to run at 60 fps and feelt better, now when i play the OG mario 64 it feels wrong, it feels laggier
@@alexbluer Frame count doesn't have anything to do with lag though. In fact higher counts are more likely to induce the feeling with dropped frames if a system can't keep up with the processing requirements. If a game plays at a consistent, steady 30 fps, it's doing plenty to give you a smooth playing experience.
Finally Noodle makes a video at 50 fps, I always thought his other work looked choppy but now it's buttery smooth!!!

Every time I watch this video I notice the flaws in the interpolated animation more and more

Personally the worst one for me is “Coraline at 60 FPS” like.....the animators of that movie did not painstakingly move little clay figurines 1/80th of an inch each frame for you to come in and decide to make it smooth
Well if they had the time then they wouldve made it smooth. He only season they didn't is because it would take 16 years or a huge budget
@@BowOneFire By doing claymation instead of cgi, they made an active choice in style. No, the only reason for the frame rate isn't time. If time was the concern, make the models on a computer instread of clay, and animate it significantly faster.
@@BowOneFire Some people find the stop motion style appealing, including Laika.

People these days have a serious case of superiority complex with any kind of knowledge. And then when faults are pointed out they double down and say they're write despite visual evidence to the contrary. Like petulant children.
I mean... the framerate did look a bit weird and choppy but it was still a kickass movie so I didn't complain
@@LowKiiSavage I think that was the point to make it look more like a comic book style
I hated watching that movie. Sped up the "artsy low fps" parts because its fucking dumb and hurts my head. Things should be 144hz not fuckin 5hz especially if its rendered on a fuckin computer. The actual movie was great but I will never watch it again.

@@owlflame Well, no he is partly right. More frames makes the game feel better and make it better to play, but it won’t help you with bad internet.
@@owlflame Games ≠ animation. With fast paced games, you NEED higher frame rates, or else the frames simply can't keep up with the gameplay. It's not even like the video discourages this. High frame rates in animation are only bad when it wasn't the creators intention to do that. People who make fast-paced games specifically design them for higher frame rates.

Ya know, before AI was a thing, art could be defined as whatever you wanted, as long as someone put time and effort into making it. Paintings, drawings, animations, sculptures, books, furniture, heccin nature, literally anything that a person viewed as art could fall under that category. Now, art is definitely gonna get a definition sometime soon. Not sure what it'll be, but it's gonna happen eventually.
