No. In VR showing a 2D image is just as pointless as sitting on a meeting watching a power point on a projector. And we are not talking a nice office or anything. But a old projector pointing at a wall interfering with wall clocks and whatever else. And no AC and air is stagnant so you get a headache + unconformable seating. For a power point that is booring, pointless and as good to watch at home without having to start up a car find parking and pay for all of that... Just to watch a power point. 16:9 and 4:3 is the only screen standards. Black bars is only allowed to bridge the gap. And possibly if a movie or whatever creator know wtf they are doing and not just being a ass about refusing to use the tools available to make stuff as good as possible. 16:9, VR, 4:3. Simple as.

he didn't Adapt to his audience, technically it was an evolving art. It proved his point with the inferior version, but it's nice to see it without the vr stuff.
I appreciate the extra video. The original version was really cool, but it could be difficult to watch if you weren't actively using/interacting with the VR aspect of it. It's rather amusing that a video that goes into how the various methods of adapting movies for home viewing could drastically negatively impact how they were intended to be experienced ended up being altered from its intended method of viewing.
10:50 The "zoomed out" home video release thing is actually a result of overscanning. Many movies were shot on 4-perforation 35mm film (Academy 1.375:1), however, the SMPTE "flat" standard aspect ratio (1.85:1) is wider. Film was distributed on 4-perf 35mm film just like it was shot on, so in order to crop it down, you used an aperture plate, which just blocks the top and bottom of the image in the projector. If you're out of frame (showing too much of the top or bottom, or in home video's case, overscanned) you are showing things that the director didn't want you to see (boom mics, sethands, etc).
Honestly, considering the topic of both videos, the 2D version serves as an interesting (and I'd argue artistic to an extent) companion to the original, as the existence of both is a great example of the "two version" problem you mention in the video, much like how the original being made for VR and being watched on 2D screens served as an example of "It was made for X medium and is now being forced onto Y medium."
i love how the thumbnail shows that this is the 2d version by having someone watching the original video, its like someone filming a 3d movie with a normal camera. pretty cool
I'm really glad to see this, I still like the concept behind the original, and I hope RUclips makes things easier to use for their VR controls because that was my biggest issue with it, but having this is really good, and like others said great to have a backup for when RUclips inevitably fucks up and takes all VR videos down or some nonsense
i appreciate that this version existing basically prove the Conclusion even better, yeah it is accessible & that's good, but it's also the worse version of the experience... but at least for now the intended version is still accessible so we got the options
Thank you noodle! It really sucks not to watch the way it was intended but as you discoursed in your video, sometimes directors gotta sacrifice some things in order to fit the device/screen. I'm really happy you made a second version
I really just want to express how awesome it is that you not only listened, but changed some (admittedly minor) things in the 2d version of this video, which of course means a ton of extra work that technically you didn't have to do. Both versions are great, and you remain one of the best creators on the platform.
As a cinemagrapher, this video was amazing. I always shoot/record by 16:9 because I hate how widescreeen literally removes almost everything from the movie. Great video man.
Dealing with variable aspect ratios in games can be a headache, too. If it's even supported. Many older games, like the first two Max Payne games, don't support anything other than 4:3 and will get stretched if you run them at 1920*1080 on a modern widescreen display. If it _is_ supported, it's often badly programmed by fixing the horizontal or vertical component of the camera's field of view and adjusting the other to match. If they fix the horizontal, then going wider cuts out your vertical view. If they fix the vertical, then going to a portrait orientation cuts your horizontal view. The correct way to do it is to take the minimum of the two, match that to the FOV slider, and expand the other. This may have gotten better with the advent of smartphones which can rotate the display at a moment's notice, but there's bound to be lots of lazy programmers who've never done anything for mobile platforms, so I remain cautiously pessimistic.
Thank you for making this version of the video. I had one of the bigger comments about phone issues and nausea, and it was a whole lot more comfortable to watch this format. As others have already mentioned, this does actually do a good job of illustrating your point. With certain gags being missed and the difference between different formats not seeming as large
Thank you so much. I've seen it in the original but RUclips made it really hard. I still annoyed it and now I can also see it completely. Thank you again!
Seeing the aspect ratios in VR honestly confused me and it took me like straight up two minutes to realize what you meant by title of your video. While I the VR version was definitely unique and cool to look at and I also get the point of having it in VR, I’m glad that there’s a normal version that can help those who can’t handle VR. Awesome job on both videos! 😁👍
Thank you for accounting for us poor lads out here with no VR or patience to move our phone screens around. Great video, looking forward to the next one!
I think the original version was inventive and fun. I commend you for making this version as well, but i also want to acknowledge that i liked the VR idea and think it was worth doing / exploring.
Really liked the original video, but I'm glad you made this available! I see them as complementary experiences in a way, you can actually corroborate your original point by giving the option of seeing the version as you originally intended and this simplified yet more accessible one
Loved how you originally used the VR format to convey scale/size and really get the aspect ratio experiences across, but this version's alright for people who only have mobile or smthn
I watched this version after watching the first one in my quest 2... AND OH MY GOD, YOU HAVE SUCH A VALID POINT. so much DEPTH is lost when you change the resolution / how you are supposed to view it
As much as I enjoyed the VR version of this video, one can only last so long being in the same room as noodle before they are overcome with holy fear, so I'm glad this much less terrifying version exists.
I said that watching your vids are like an experience that's an understatement. It's crazy that this version was created within discussing the topic of releases not going with the direction and choices of the creator and it really highlights it. You took an experience and you made it into a video. A regular old video that takes the magic of an experience and kinda tosses it in the trash can. Further amplifying and strengthening your point. A meta joke that just makes you even more correct. You, my boy, are the smartest dummy I have ever did done lain my droopy little eyes on.
Glad you made a version of the video I could actually enjoy. Nothing worse than having to sit perfectly still to watch a video without feeling motion sick
I love you sound design in this one. hearing you pull things outta my ear was so neat. all the little things happening on each side of the screen just made me laugh as it happend.
When watching the original, I REALLY understood the point about how VR can alter a movie's screen to fit whatever aspect ratio the movie director wanted. When rewatching it in 2D (either downloading the original or this version) I absolutely get the part where "It has to be widely adopted" for it to work.
Thank you for uploading this version. I absolutely love the original, and I sincerely believe you used youtube's VR functions better than 99% of VR videos. It also just didn't vibe with my phone at all and I had no better way to go about it. You're honestly one of my favourite youtubers, and I always love hearing your thoughts on things I thought I never cared about.
I just realize the application all of the critiques in the video. have yet to watch the VR version, but the fact that you are not only preaching what other creators had to go through, you’re also demonstrating the solutions and how we’re able to capture the narrative with framing
So glad you did this noodle. I didn't want to say anything for fear of getting torn apart by fanboys. It was really hard for me to watch and this was much better in my opinion :)
Very impressed how well this turned out, and how quickly you did it! I hadn't considered that you have full control of the 3d camera. At least, I thought it would take a lot of effort to recompose each shot, but it seems to have worked out quite well without needing to move any geometry (that I could notice). This just goes to further reinforce the ideas of preservation and tailor made accommodation discussed in the video too! I do appreciate the editor notes though, to make it clear that this is a compromise, not the best way to experience it. Seriously, cannot praise the VR version enough!
You have one of the coolest most distinct and entertaining video formats I've yet to come across It feels like so much heart is put into these videos, great work!
I actually didn't think about this before. I actually just realized while watching this video that everything in this video is true. I used to LOVE going to the theatres, because it was on a big wide screen. But finding this out just makes me mad. I'm glad they made screens wide on tvs. (btw I just wanna say you're my new favorite animator I love watching you rant about controversy without worrying about other people getting mad)
Corrections: 16:9 is an invention of the digital age. People who saw Robin Hood in theaters originally would have saw it in 1.66:1 most likely, but there was leeway in either direction (1.85 and 1.33 being the most common by far). Some theaters would still have had 4:3 screens and shown it that way. In fact if you were to look at print of a sound movie from this era, the picture would actually be about 1.2:1 because the sound part takes up some of what used to be picture, so even in 4:3 it's cropped slightly. These movies were never meant to be seen in this full 1.2:1 height, and it was not uncommon for boom mics or other unwanted parts of the set to be at the extremes of the frame that would have been cropped out, even for home video releases. Seinfeld wasn't "upscaled" to 4k, it was shot on film and rescanned in the 4k (or so) resolution it always existed in. Digital IMAX is usually 1.89:1
I'm extremely thankful that you decided to make a non-VR version. VR is not accessible to me in any way, but I still wanted to consume your content. This video in particular interested me. I do now wish, having seen the video, that I had a way to watch the VR version, and, should that ever come to me, I will for sure. But for now, I'm just glad I got to see the video.
Noodle when he makes a video that only a fraction of his audience can enjoy the way he intended, then releases it in a way that all of his audience can enjoy but enjoy slightly less than if they had the original version
Thank you for doing this Noodle, I know it wasn't how you intended but this did allow me to be better understand and focus on the points you were trying to make Tho wasn't a fan of the reminders that this is a worse version, I know it was to sell your point, but it sorta soured an otherwise great alternative for people who couldn't waych the original properly. Kinda felt like talking down on accessibility Also, personally, the Imax demonstration didn't feel like it got lost here, still enjoyed that reveal just as much.
I kinda like the ad break cut away idea. Since I was listening on my phone, it seemed very clever and well timed. I can’t wait to see the original video, I’m curious about the controls you mentioned
I'm glad you mentioned Transformers, the aspect ratio is super noticeable in Revenge o the Fallen during that scene where Optimus Prime and Megatron are tumbling into a forest
I will say this is a pretty good version. I feel while the VR works in IMAX sections it only hurts the rest of the video that has zero reason to be in VR like now I can actually see the text on images you use along with transitions between sections feeling more natural compared to the VR version.
I like how this video allows me to see a majority of 3D animation that I didn't know where to look at in the right time for the original, now able to see every little detail like how the small tv goes more and more left on the table until it doesn't.
It’s kinda ironic how your solution to showcase every aspect ratio ended up being excluded from certain people who weren’t able to view the thing the way the creator intended. Love you and the video tho
Absolutely brilliant set of videos, as a collector of VHS tapes, the beginning section was a joy to watch, also I watched this video half in VR before realizing you uploaded another version, and realizing how brilliant it is.
That "is he behind you?" Line was alot more menacing in vr because you couldn't fully look behind you

What a lad. He actually has the patience to listen to his audience and adapt his videos to people that need it. Keep it up!
Yes, like how Pixar did!
Indeed
he didn't Adapt to his audience, technically it was an evolving art. It proved his point with the inferior version, but it's nice to see it without the vr stuff.
You can tell he wasn’t that happy about it lol
Are you sure about that, this further proves Noodle's point
I love how this video isn't an exact carbon copy of the original video, with new jokes that land perfectly
Indeed
I appreciate the extra video. The original version was really cool, but it could be difficult to watch if you weren't actively using/interacting with the VR aspect of it. It's rather amusing that a video that goes into how the various methods of adapting movies for home viewing could drastically negatively impact how they were intended to be experienced ended up being altered from its intended method of viewing.
Indeed
Yo you go to rice?
Indeed
i appreciate that this version existing basically prove the Conclusion even better, yeah it is accessible & that's good, but it's also the worse version of the experience... but at least for now the intended version is still accessible so we got the options
I love his delivery at 2:44
I hate how much I love your videos that I had to come back three weeks after you posted it just to say how much I love this video
Thank you noodle! It really sucks not to watch the way it was intended but as you discoursed in your video, sometimes directors gotta sacrifice some things in order to fit the device/screen. I'm really happy you made a second version
Indeed
I really just want to express how awesome it is that you not only listened, but changed some (admittedly minor) things in the 2d version of this video, which of course means a ton of extra work that technically you didn't have to do. Both versions are great, and you remain one of the best creators on the platform.
Indeed
I let the ads run in both version so he has at least a tiny bit of reward. 🤷♀️
The video looks great both ways, and that’s actually impressive.
Indeed
This may have gotten better with the advent of smartphones which can rotate the display at a moment's notice, but there's bound to be lots of lazy programmers who've never done anything for mobile platforms, so I remain cautiously pessimistic.
you know you are just supposed to like... frame it for your aspect ratio right?
Thank you for making this version of the video. I had one of the bigger comments about phone issues and nausea, and it was a whole lot more comfortable to watch this format. As others have already mentioned, this does actually do a good job of illustrating your point. With certain gags being missed and the difference between different formats not seeming as large
Thank you so much. I've seen it in the original but RUclips made it really hard. I still annoyed it and now I can also see it completely. Thank you again!
Indeed
Seeing the aspect ratios in VR honestly confused me and it took me like straight up two minutes to realize what you meant by title of your video. While I the VR version was definitely unique and cool to look at and I also get the point of having it in VR, I’m glad that there’s a normal version that can help those who can’t handle VR. Awesome job on both videos! 😁👍
I watched the VR version and enjoyed it a lot but I like this version so I can appreciate the very nice 3D you did for this, I love it
Indeed
@@ibranmlr6139 Goodness dude, how many indeed do you need for each comment?
Love this fade to white for the "it's a lie" theme ❤
You should totally keep it... as well as those "like a car" jokes out of nowhere ;P
Your comment about Zack Schneider seeing an IMAX screen had me rolling. But then you said why you saw the Dark Knight and I subbed.
Thank you for accounting for us poor lads out here with no VR or patience to move our phone screens around. Great video, looking forward to the next one!
Indeed
I didn't even realise until I saw the first video, that my new phone doesn't even have the option to use VR, like my old one did. This displeases me.
Indeed
Loved how you originally used the VR format to convey scale/size and really get the aspect ratio experiences across, but this version's alright for people who only have mobile or smthn
I watched this version after watching the first one in my quest 2...
AND OH MY GOD, YOU HAVE SUCH A VALID POINT.
so much DEPTH is lost when you change the resolution / how you are supposed to view it
For those of you wondering, yes the zoom at 12:19 was in the VR video too... actually scared me.
No it wasn't lol
@@noodlefunny there is, it's at 12:57 of the 3D video
As much as I enjoyed the VR version of this video, one can only last so long being in the same room as noodle before they are overcome with holy fear, so I'm glad this much less terrifying version exists.
Honestly, as someone who watched this in VR I still think it's kind of cool to watch this version just to see how you adapted it for 2D
Indeed
This man is really just a visionary of animation for youtube😂
I said that watching your vids are like an experience that's an understatement. It's crazy that this version was created within discussing the topic of releases not going with the direction and choices of the creator and it really highlights it. You took an experience and you made it into a video. A regular old video that takes the magic of an experience and kinda tosses it in the trash can. Further amplifying and strengthening your point. A meta joke that just makes you even more correct. You, my boy, are the smartest dummy I have ever did done lain my droopy little eyes on.
It's like Jackass 4.5 but no
Glad you made a version of the video I could actually enjoy. Nothing worse than having to sit perfectly still to watch a video without feeling motion sick
Aww so kind, thanks for actually doing this for the people who couldn't stomach vr even if it makes the point worser. Cool video bro
Indeed
I can actually watch the video now, thank you
There were a bunch of little details in the animation that was lost in the VR version my phone was rendering so I’m glad you gave us the option.
VR is grate my guy. Especially your bald spot
Indeed
It's super easy and manageable to own a passable projector now. They should offer full aspect on anything streamed
I just realize the application all of the critiques in the video. have yet to watch the VR version, but the fact that you are not only preaching what other creators had to go through, you’re also demonstrating the solutions and how we’re able to capture the narrative with framing
Loved the original, showed it to my friends with my Index. Glad you're making it more accesible
Indeed
How do you watch the original on the Index?? I couldn't figure it out
@@KawaiiJessJ I used virtual desktop, it's $15 but pretty useful, especially if you use VR often at all
So glad you did this noodle.
Indeed
This drives the point home when you can't see the embroidered cope seeth mald wall image like in the vr vid.
You have one of the coolest most distinct and entertaining video formats I've yet to come across
It feels like so much heart is put into these videos, great work!
That midroll was done way too well
This legend just made a video about ruining movies with formats they weren't meant for, and then ruined that video with a format it wasn't meant for
I actually didn't think about this before.
The irony of this video turning into exactly what noodle complains about for 20 minutes is not lost on me
Corrections:
16:9 is an invention of the digital age.
I really appreciate this. Noodle, u remain one of the coolest creators on the platform
Indeed
The VR version was such a fun treat, I loved it
Indeed
This is a good amount of dimensions. Very nice
Thank you for doing this Noodle, I know it wasn't how you intended but this did allow me to be better understand and focus on the points you were trying to make
Tho wasn't a fan of the reminders that this is a worse version, I know it was to sell your point, but it sorta soured an otherwise great alternative for people who couldn't waych the original properly. Kinda felt like talking down on accessibility
Also, personally, the Imax demonstration didn't feel like it got lost here, still enjoyed that reveal just as much.
Indeed
I kinda like the ad break cut away idea. Since I was listening on my phone, it seemed very clever and well timed. I can’t wait to see the original video, I’m curious about the controls you mentioned
0:50 watch the little boy move! I love ‘im
I'm glad you mentioned Transformers, the aspect ratio is super noticeable in Revenge o the Fallen during that scene where Optimus Prime and Megatron are tumbling into a forest
Man I really like those different styles in what video are made , super cool , and the video is also awesome
I will say this is a pretty good version. I feel while the VR works in IMAX sections it only hurts the rest of the video that has zero reason to be in VR like now I can actually see the text on images you use along with transitions between sections feeling more natural compared to the VR version.
Indeed
9:00 Just noticed Fred replaced the fucking Joker. That’s good.
Watching this video on a 16:10 laptop was a cool experience since I got real letterboxes to go with your letterboxes.
I like how this video allows me to see a majority of 3D animation that I didn't know where to look at in the right time for the original, now able to see every little detail like how the small tv goes more and more left on the table until it doesn't.
8:52 yesterday was actually my birthday, thank you
I live in austin and 6:40 creeped me out and caught me off guard
It’s kinda ironic how your solution to showcase every aspect ratio ended up being excluded from certain people who weren’t able to view the thing the way the creator intended. Love you and the video tho
As someone who loves movies and suffers from motion sickness, I really hope that VR is not the future of movie-watching 😬
as somebody with a phone to small to fake VR with and not enough money for a legit VR I wholeheartedly agree
Absolutely brilliant set of videos, as a collector of VHS tapes, the beginning section was a joy to watch, also I watched this video half in VR before realizing you uploaded another version, and realizing how brilliant it is.
im really glad i actually took some time to watch the original video in vr, this feels claustrophobic in some screnes, great job
2:13 he do a lil dance!!!!!
I may be in the minority but I really appreciate letting me watch this video 2d, because the 3d version was straight up unwatchable for me.
11:41 Anyone know the classic video game song that’s playing in the background at this point?
i like that this version of the thumbnail contrasts with the other one
Thank you for doing both versions.
