as someone who has used discord for more than 2 seconds *i have ptsd for that song*
You can tell Noodle did his research by making the programmer a furry
*puts on my programming socks*
@ how'd you have so many subs?
If furries did disappear, the Internet would crash in 3days
I don't get it. Can someone explain?
@@epidemicrage4337 Many furries are geeks and I would say most programmers aswell, so there is a pretty big overlap there. I think the furry fandom also started out on the internet so you had to have a pretty decent understanding of the net to find other furries especially early on, so they would probably have an easier time getting into IT in general.
Fun fact: the black bars being a physical object in the Pootis Engaged videos was a thing long before them - they were a model on the Steam Workshop for years and were seen in a lot of other SFMs, they were even interacted with in quite a few of them. The guy just went all out with the concept.
All i think about is Monsters v aliens where the president asked who want to freeze his head while sticking out past the black bars on screen. I was a film purest back then and. I was a child.
*acountable by bo burnman plays off in the distance like a far cry banshy wail*
My dumb ass just spent 10 minutes trying to figure out what a thing long is
"I fucking hate weeb culture this has no right to be this cool"
I really felt that
I don't see why people hate black bars so much. I'd rather watch a 4:3 movie with black bars on the side than having it cropped to 16:9 or **shutters** 21:9
Same reason why some people think 60fps anime is better than 24fps anime.
They're gamers.
Fucking gamers. :P
@@ThePreciseClimber dawg, i'm a gamer and even I don't like something being stretched to fill the screen or anime clips being made into 60 fps (which reduces the impact of punches or attacks).
@@ThePreciseClimber "I must assign labels rather than use basic logic and reasoning"
No, people hate black bars because they'd prefer the content make use of the full display without having to cut off detail to achieve it. You mentioned games, and guess what? Modern games ADD to what you see as you increase the aspect ratio, rather than cutting it.
Also, 60 FPS CAN look better than 24 FPS. What you seemingly cannot comprehend is that people can design things around framerates and aspect ratios, and that just because you can crop things or use AI interpolation to add frames yourself doesn't mean these are the ONLY way to achieve that goal.
Some people wants what they payed for which is that the screen fills everything, even though that is ruining framing. Like plenty of people swear by that the Seinfeld remaster on Netflix is the best possible version because it is in 16:9 and fills the screen, even though a lot of jokes are cropped out.
And those same people think the Synder cut of Justice league is unwatchable because it's in 4:3. Now the latter is somewhat understandable as you don't realize how tall image unless you watch it on the right type of screen (which Noodle talked about in his original video). But even if you explained and even demonstrated it, those people would still want it to be in 16:9 and even argue that aspect ratio should've been in theaters only and that they should've crop it for the home version.
@@ThePreciseClimber nooo you can't just interpolate frames!!!
ok framecel
Well well if it isn't tv boy. That's what everyone calls you now, TV boy.
Never underestimate the power of SFM animators, they had to fight their way through hell and back to master some ancient Eldritch magic just to make a shitpost, who knows how far they can go
not just shitposts...

3:55 the best part is that the black bars are still used to frame scenes and draw emphasis to certain things. absolutley phenomenal.
5:28 I literally started crying with laughter
other animation youtubers try to hide the fact that their entire character is just 6 entire frames but this guy embraces it
The difference is that those are sta's.
Noodle is an animator.
Also it's actually a great media at just how many emotions and different faces there are. There's like a hundred different doodles and they all move, rather than jank around, like other animators do, and this is really cool.
A fun aspect ratio change I personally love is in the 2nd Hunger Games movie, in the IMAX version, when Katniss is raised in the elevator into the arena, the ratio slowly changes as she goes from the dark of the tube into the bright open arena. And the transition is gradual which I love.
Nope does something very similar which I really loved
@@noodlefunny Nope was a cool movie
Mission Impossible: Fallout does something very similar when Tom Cruise runs to catch the helicopter.
There was something similar in the Mandalorian episode where the townspeople and tusken raiders watch as the Krayt Dragon starts to wake up, really gives a cool effect of tension
there's this really artsy Chinese film called 我不是潘金莲 which really plays around with the ratios, you should watch it
Thank you for addressing the things I thought about in your last video
1. Artists are cool
2. Gamers are terrible
Keep playing those Greatest Hits ✊
I want to take a moment to thank you for mentioning Wolfwalkers. The way that movie uses aspect ratios and panelling is a marvel. The scene where Robyn and Mebh have a tearful argument in the scullery while the aspect ratio just gets narrower and narrower and narrower until it gets claustrophobic is just the tightest shit in existence.
Pootis Engade is the absolute best example of creative ratio use and I'm so happy it got a mentions, because it blows everything else out of the water and its such a obscure little "only this part of youtube" video and it kills it to a degree that no professional movie has ever done. LOVE that it got a mention. Love you Noodle
Hell, if you check the video's watch time, you'll see that the part where Noods used it as an example also happens to be the "most watched" part of the video. It's such a dumb animation (endearing), and I love that that shows here.

I absolutely love the fact that Noodle loves aussie youtube comedians. The Aunty Donna reference and the Cracker Milk cameo, fucken, my man.

I think noodle was a guest on one of their podcast skits
CRACKERMILK!!
I liked how in the lighthouse the frame is deeply confined and restrictive to emphasize the claustrophobia and tight lack of privacy
holy shit Halo got ported roughly as many times as Sonic Adventure lol
The way Pootis Engage utilizes the frame is particularly fascinating because it's an evolution of what a bunch of folk have been doing in SFM for a while! At some point someone came up with a way to introduce cinematic frames, something SFM doesn't have any dedicated tools for, which was by using a physical model. Naturally folk realized the power of this and started playing with things moving in front of them, animating them, or interacting with them. Real rad to see the effect getting noticed more outside the community! (And Ceno is like, the APEX of the technique!)
I'm so fucking glad Pootis Engage and ceno0 are actually getting the recognition they deserve; their work is insane
It’s also so cringe I couldn’t even finish it.

Ratios are far from nightmares! Literally, I’m so good at math that I can’t be ratioed without the person ratioing me to be improbable!
The white background and ambient music is a really good detail. It's actually crazy how you don't even have to think about it. Also a really good topic to hear you talk about, especially as someone who isn't really into things related to that by default
that crackermilk cameo caught me so off guard and physically hurt me. i love it
To explain the Life of Pi situation a bit further: that technique is known frame break, and was likely applied because of the film being shot in 3D (the effect looks more impressive in 3D). There were a number of other films that employed this technique, including the 3D version of G-Force, the IMAX 3D versions of GOTG Vol. 1 and 2, the 3D version of the 2016 Ghostbusters film, and the IMAX 3D versions of the first two Fantastic Beasts films (I believe Life of Pi was the only film to use this technique in the 2D version as well).
EDIT: Some people in the replies seem to be misunderstanding my comment. I should point out that I’m talking about things popping out of the frame and into the letterbox bars, not the frame changing aspect ratios.
huh
G-Force... you've unlocked memories...
Glad someone mentioned this. Ghostbusters 2016's 3D version is like... Honestly one of the only films which benefits from being in 3D and that's bizarre because it's... Friggin' Ghostbusters 2016, a film which is otherwise pretty mediocre outside of the internet hatestorm it created.
I could've sworn that Happy Feet 2 used something like this. Those 3d bubbles during the credits sequence blew my mind in theaters. Felt like they were gonna touch me.
Don’t forget Penguins of Madagascar

Good for you man, good for you...
Fun fact, in Mob Psycho 100 the Mogami arc is entirely presented in the film-esc black bars aspect ratio, the studio being as passionate as they are, they got special storyboards made specifically so everything was animated with said ratio in mind, they didn’t want to just crop it or do anything in post, they wanted to make sure every artistic decision was made with that intentional aspect ratio behind it.

I'm honestly excited for his ad breaks. Always such great work
My favorite use of live-action using aspect ratios to its advantage has to be the teaser trailer for the live-action Cowboy Bebop. It's so artsy and fun and weirdly a lot like pootis engage where they move around and use the borders as weapons, it's so unserious and if they kept the aesthetic for the actual show, it would almost make it almost watchable.
12:16 this is a BIG problem in GTA:SA remastered. EVERY SINGLE CLIP is zoomed out, meaning that you can see frozen characters models or props pop to life (like the food Big Smoke brings from thin air into the vehicle). Thankfully later versions fixed this but play the remastered on any early version and the cinematics will fuck you up CONSTANTLY
Gotta say- I like the creativity that goes into both the "cardboard filler" (the joke is not lost on me and I love it) episodes with the house falling apart and evolving and such, that and the writing completely betrays how little effort you claim to put into them. also the acknowledgement of Pootis Engage and the new endcard Q&A are both things I love, keep pls.
It’s great how every time a slight bit of damage happens in a main video it translates into the next one, even going into cardboard
You sir have just made sense of why he chose cardboard - cardboard “filler” videos….

I think one of my favourite examples of clever storytelling use of aspect ratios has to be Everything Everywhere All At Once, where every single universe, without fail, has a very slightly different aspect ratio. I only noticed it after watching this video, but it is one of the coolest small details in that movie that makes it so gosh darn good.
As an ultrawide monitor enjoyer, the cutscenes in red dead being letterboxed into a smaller ultrawide box with irregular black bars on all 4 sides ALSO made me die inside making this video funny and relatable :)

I dont know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but there is an animated cutscene for Honkai Impact 3rd called Because Of You and it uses ratios in a really neat way. As the lead's eye gets corrupted, the ratio shrinks and when she regains it, she blasts the black bars away and it looks really good.

this man is a genuine artist. i love what you do so much. you are genius.
as someone with a 32:9 i simply accepted a while ago that either i will have a good time in 32:9 or i will have a good time in 16:9. any one who is pissy over black bars has too little responsibility.
Love how Noodle's canonically a little doodle boy on a piece of paper and popsicle stick, the size of an easily stealable credit card that you can use to get discounted ball shavers.
I do miss his hand drawn version but gotta say that it's pretty funny this way too.
The movie that always sticks in my mind, whenever ratio shift are mentioned, is Oz The Great and Powerful. Spending the first 20 or so minutes in 4:3 black and white, but then slowly transitioning to widescreen and full color when we enter Oz, was so effective at setting the grandeur of that fantasy world

I really liked the framing they used in "A Way Out" especially the police fight scene, it was just soooo smooth the switch between the characters, even having a scene parodying Double Dragon
But the whole game used a lot of ratio flair that made it fun to watch or play, even when it went to sorta-solo mode because of story points focusing on one of the characters
Black and white 2 had cut scenes with black bars, but the advisor characters could fly into and out of the scene, so they could seem to be on your side of the "screen", In front of the bars, or in the scene, behind the bars, pointing things out. They also did things like leaning against the edge of the screen. It was pretty well animated for such an old game.
I can't express how much I appreciate an icecream stick cardboard style 😁🖤
I love how the "programmers" puppet just is a furry. That's dedication to accuracy.
The movie Galaxy Quest starts in 4:3 like the show it’s parodying and becomes widescreen when the characters are shown actual space. In theaters the on screen curtains open and the movie uses that moment to shift into 16:9 so it feels like you are also seeing something amazing and larger than you imagined. It was a very cool moment completely lost on VHS

14:50 Let me remind you that Sonic Adventure on Steam, the most accessible version, is a port, of a port, of a port, of a botched remaster of a Dreamcast game that started development on the Saturn.
A way out's framing was FREAKING SICK.
I like how it’s become a common gag in each video that the house’s integrity keeps degrading. perhaps one day the house will be mere rubble
Pootis engage is legitimately one of my favorite visual pieces of media right now because its so solidly put together and funny as hell.
Straight up cheered when I heard Ceno's beauty start to play. I thought I grew out of anime TF2 shitposts long ago, but he puts such a ludicrous degree of effort and creativity into his work it's baffling. Certainly helps that it includes more comedy than just "lol random."
These are some of my favorite videos to absorb, because of just the pure artistic niche nerd-dome going on and all the wonderful examples that I'd never quite considered or realized, and that now I can enjoy (or rage at) going forward!! I especially love using WolfWalkers as an example; I adore the way they use shape language (and the ratios) to communicate the different environments or thematic elements, and doing a dang good job while they do it. I love it so much.
Here's something fun I discovered the other day, when you play Halo CE (on the master chief collection) on an ultrawide, when the characters leave where the 16:9 aspect ratio ends they just freeze in mid air, like they just got hit by a time topping beam, so you just end up with loads of weird shit and people flying in the edges of the screen while you're trying to watch the cutscenes!!!
DID THEY BREAK IT AGAIN???
8:28 Genuinely impressed at how thoroughly you've managed to Pavlov me into this lying bit, well done
