Don't blame yourself on the launch, a lot of 7.5 GTI/GLI guys have trouble with it. They have to pull the fuse for the traction control to fully disengage it to get a good launch.
Those are not empty buttons around the gear shift. They look that way for symmetry. Do you really think there are five additional features that this car offers in another market? What VW could do to eliminate the empty button look is use the blanks for some of the other features like the heated and cooled seats. They could redesign the gear shift surround but VW seem very committed to this look.

Our 2020 is proving to be very good with excellent build quality with no rattles or squeaks. I considered one of these for a while. But, for $34k (automatic), there are no parking sensors, no navigation, a not-so-great backup camera (no trajectory), and lots of hard plastics everywhere in the cabin. I just think that you can get more bang for your buck in other models. 🤷

Around the 13:20 mark, you can see what the GLI tuning is doing, as soon as the clutch is pressed, the revs jump. Everyday Driver identifies this also. Good review though, very detailed.
could those blank tabs surrounding the shifter have blanks there because of other countries may have tailored options. I remember Britain having a rear fog light button for example. i understand what your saying, but VW serves the planet, that's a lot of local areas

These upgrades made a good vehicle much better. The tires have to be changed from the stock junk that comes with it, the whole dynamic with handling improved greatly. I am very satisfied with it, will be keeping for awhile :)
Sounds awesome I just want mine in white with the black package for contrast.
@@danr154 Great combo, there was only 2 in the whole area when I purchased, black & the extra cost gray. I went all black, since the wheels are black and added dark black tint, looks awesome. Hope you get yours soon!
My cat is on its way, does this
Power increase come when ordered, are is it aftermarket?
Yes!! I’ve been waiting for you to do this one. I recently bought one and I love it!
Is Volkswagen still going with the cheap materials on the interior? I always hated them for that.
@@RokerSMisisipi sorta, front is a bit of both. Only the door pockets are cheap and plastic but honesty don’t mind and same for the back. It’s mostly plastic. But honestly don’t mind it as well. I have two dogs and I feel the plastic doesn’t scratch from their nails.
Gets one shift wrong and the comments section is suddenly salty. Cut him some slack guys. It ain't easy.
Should really appreciate how the quality of his videos have gone up lately.
My first new car was a 1992 VW Jetta. I've always been a fan.
Interestingly, this “ Autobahn “ & the other GLI variants have a lower stance than the other Jetta’s… And, of course real functional dual exhaust!! It should be noted that this “ tester “ Jetta is equipped with 100% real leather! Not leatherette , Sofyan…
I have a 2014 Jetta and it has been nothing but troubles for me. It only has 87000 miles. I had to change the timing chain, guides and tensioners for $2576 by the local VW dealer. I had to also change the front wheel bearing assembly. That's $1183. This is the gift that keeps giving.
German cars are crap. Japanese cars rule. I owned several Toyota Corolla and one Camry. I never ever had any of these issues ever.
Honda's can be expensive too. I have an Accord V6 that needs $5000 of stuff done to it. So, yah, I'm currently holding out til' car price come back down after the chip shortage problem and replace this junker.
The armrest does adjust a little bit. There’s little props underneath the lid that pop down to raise the armrest height.
This is literally the best car
I enjoyed the review, especially all the launches but IMO too many references to electric cars, 🍎 and 🍊. This is going to be "one of those cars" when years down the road and there's NO manuals and people say...."oh yeah, the GLI had 3 pedals"🤔🍿🙄
Now this is a true enthusiast sedan
I’ve had a 2012 Jetta, 2016 gli, and now this bad boy and I can tell you, If you like driving and want a reliable daily driver with some nice features… any Jetta is the car.
Does it take premium gas?
@@kevinnorris6558 I use only premium on my cars, no matter the brand of car. Don’t put regular gas on any car unless you are using someone else’s car.
@@kevinnorris6558 According to VW you can use regular but won't get the power without using all premium.
Your 2020 GLI review helped make my decision to buy it!!
Of course it gives wheel spin when you floor it in a MT lol.
This guy needs to learn how to drive. Smh
MT model choices are getting very limited these days.
It seems sometimes that some of us want change just for change sake. This interior looks good. The tech is what needs upgrading not the design
Not gonna lie the mk7 Jetta is definitely heading in the right direction. The interior tech you just can't beat at this price point. And the styling and power train 👍💯
Nice Jetta I never really looked that fast at a Jetta when it came to VWs lineup but this one is definitely interesting
i have one. gotta say it looks more sharp and less blocky in person. also very fast. number don't show especially with what i've raced
@@niomiskov4219 idk I love Volkswagen but these new Jetta's are hideous
@@Juan-nf2my you gotta see one in person. there's some cheap little mods you could do to make it look better too
@@niomiskov4219 I personally love these new jettas they look sick, love the tail lights and the GLI’s have awesome headlights
I have never been a VW fan other than the Golf R of course, but I'm really liking this car. I wish I test drove this...
You keep calling yourself an enthusiast, it sound more like you are an electric evangelist. You are in a 3 pedal, turbo charged, sports sedan, and still you manage to sneak in your Tesla bias. It's a shame really....
Yeah. I didn't hear him call himself that in this video but I have in others. This guy is no enthusiast. If he is, he certainly doesn't know how to drive or appreciate the nuances of the driving experience. Maybe he "outgrew it."
😂
you seem to be really salty over a small comment
@@moistydoooood That small comment has implications. If it doesn't apply then don't use it. Simple really.
@@darrell9616 or maybe people have the right to say whatever the fuck they want.
I traveled 560 miles to buy a 2020 GLI because they could not be found anywhere. Manual tran even harder to find so I am stuck with DS on the flat grey color with blackout wheels. This car drives so solid and smooth and the suspension character is UNREAL. I go from comfort mode feeling like a 1980s Buick to sport mode that has instantaneous torque and a roar. This the best car I've ever owned and I've owned Volvo 850s, Volvo S60s and the phenomenal Mk6 Passat that I thought could not be beat. Wrong.
I had to factory order mine. Told to wait 3-6 months and that was over a month ago.
i love my 19 gli. i also have the autobahn edition and it does and has everything i want other than AWD. I went from a loaded cadillac cts to this and felt like I really didn't sacrifice much other than the manufacturers badge and that AWD. I miss sliding the rear end out a little bit. Oh well. The 5 year warranty is also pretty dope.
god i really wish these were awd aswell, here in michigan they would TEAR up the winters, regardless. I have a question, are you in a snowy season how does drive?
@@random13627 I live in Buffalo… so yeah, pretty snowy lol. This winter has been mild so far and very little snow. I have some Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4 on it, and it does just fine in snowy and icy conditions. Haven’t had it deep snow yet since I got the new tread but I’m suspecting it should do just fine. AWD would be badass
Finally an in depth review from more of the well known car ytubers. Been waiting
I’ve got a 2021 GLI autobahn Unitronic stage 1 91oct. It is a seriously fun car. Just ordered a set of Pilot Sport 4S. Can’t wait to have it installed.
Jealous. Love to do that myself but my partner would probably kill me considering how I already drive ;)
@@LucidMSF my girl isn’t happy either aha. The acceleration from 50-75mph is now only 3.54sec with the stage1 tune. I’m a bit faster than a 440i 2017 I raced on the highway. I just love the car
Our 2020 is proving to be very good with excellent build quality with no rattles or squeaks. But we are having an issue with the rear brakes as the parking brake sensor failed resulting in late/problematic release prematurely wearing the rotors. VW has resisted rotor replacement so far but we are still dealing with it. Making some vids on channel now. But a heck of a fun car to drive.
I had to factory order and was told "good luck" due to global issues with supplies.
True to the channel name. Always redlining in 1st gear and bouncing off the limiter!
I bought one of these in 2019 brand new with 6 miles on it. While I liked the performance, I did not like the DSG only because you heard grinding noise. It always shifted smoothly so I don’t think it was defective. Rattles rattles rattles galore inside coming from the doors. Whenever I let my foot off the gas there was this weird noise coming from floor. Check engine light came on at 300 miles and they told me it’s just something with these engines and it was nothing really wrong. Anyways I only kept the car for 8 months.
Sounds like vw. Lol.
@@ka124as I leased a 2016 Audi A3 and they thing was beautiful not a single rattle. The dsg didn’t make any noise. It was also a 6 speed and not 7 speed but i don’t know if that would make a difference.
Ik there was like a rattle/grind due to a fuel line or something not being connected properly the dealer fixed it when I asked otherwise yea the interior plastics rattle annoyingly sometimes. Although I havent gotten an engine light in 8000 miles
@@cheesecurdinator4010 My check engine light came on at 500 miles. They updated some software. I was told it is something they cannot fix completely and it might happen again lol
I had a 2010 Jetta Wolfsburg with a stick. Loved that car. So much fun. Until the freaking plastic intake cracked. Then the replacement cracked, too.
Germany has a law that all plastic parts in a car must be made with recycled plastics. Could be the reason for the constant failures.
Dude the beats audio make my car sound like a movie theater lol. Turned off halfway and whole street can hear music that’s crazy to me I like it I just raced a jaguar and actually kept up with him 🤣
Subwoofer pre-installed?
I own this automobile and I love it.
Don’t take this the wrong way, but you really need to brush up on your manual transmission operation.
Love the gray color!
I don't think I agree with your comment that VW used to have luxury-like interiors and this one seems cheap in comparison. Several years ago VW dumb-downed the Jetta and sales suffered. Remember when they did that to keep the price low and gain market share? This version seems pretty nice in comparison. I think it's unfair to compare to Audi anyway...a different price point.
Edit; initially you said "10-15 years ago". Then you said 15-20. I agree that 20 years ago the Jetta was relatively better.
Yeah he used to talk shit about the previous Jetta's interior. I think he was talking about the VW CC in terms of Volkswagens nice interiors.
I would take this Jetta over the new 2022 Civic ANYDAY!
Me too. But civic is more reliable.
@@fobuu yea
This really doesn’t compete with the regular Civic it’s more of a Civic Si competitor
@@f181234 hes talking about the jetta in general. the new civic is super ugly to a lot of people.
@@ZS-xi4xk like this Jetta is not boring and ugly. I’ll happily go with the Civic over this.
OMG, you are right in my neighborhood with your test drive!!
Your 0-60 launches are terrible the wheel hop is gringe worthy I can see your rpm this time and it's not enough! I saw you did the same with the elantra N and was wondering if it was the car? thank goodness it appears to be driver error. but all said you are one of my favorite auto review channels so please don't take it too badly keep up the great reviews and learn how to dump a clutch without the wheel hop : )
2021 GLI cool styling, fun to drive, practical. If you want the extra rear seat room, sporty rear differential, don't mind iffy reliability with the turbo and DC Tranny and don't need AWD for snow, GLI possible alternative to Mazda 3 Turbo.
I think the 2016 GLI SEL was the last nice design
Yep! I had one in dark metallic grey. I loved that car!!
VWs cut power when it detects wheel hop. You can mitigate it with a dogbone mount insert from the aftermarket
I considered one of these for a while. But, for $34k (automatic), there are no parking sensors, no navigation, a not-so-great backup camera (no trajectory), and lots of hard plastics everywhere in the cabin. I just think that you can get more bang for your buck in other models. 🤷
@@jasonfurtado3758 true, those are a lot of things to omit. But an adaptive suspension, ambient lighting, and ventilated seats aren’t features you find in other cars in that range.
@@olegnacim Kia Forte GT for $7-10k less gives you all of that (and rear seat vents). True, the DCT in the GLI is better than the Forte GT, but not $10k better.

This car is gorgeous.
Still impressive that you can find:
Jetta GLI
Accord sport manual
Camry v6
Mazda6 turbo
Civic Si
Golf
Corolla hatch manual

The Jetta never had a premium interior, that's urban legend!
Right?! I've only ever owned and driven Jettas of different flavors and the interior was never the selling point. 2001 GLS 2.slow, 2005 Jetta GLI, 2013 Jetta 2.5 SE. While the interiors can be nice enough, they aren't luxury cars. They're small economical sedans.
Love that SZA was the first thing to come on lol
The nearby dealerships have exactly 0 of these in stock. If you are looking for a manual, they are even more scarce.
The fact that everything you say comes off the top of your head still amazes me lol. You truly are an auto enthusiast!
Around the 13:20 mark, you can see what the GLI tuning is doing, as soon as the clutch is pressed, the revs jump. Not even rev hang, but an actual artificial “bump” in rpms…not sure what VW is doing here but I imagine that takes a huge chunk away from the driveability and enjoyment of this car. Everyday Driver identifies this also. Good review though, very detailed.
could those blank tabs surrounding the shifter have blanks there because of other countries may have tailored options. I remember Britain having a rear fog light button for example. i understand what your saying, but VW serves the planet, that's a lot of local areas
Yes, exactly what it is. I lived in Germany for two years and the Golf I drove there had more oomph and buttons than my mother's in the US. Same generation Golf. Hit 150 MPH on the Autobahn in a base model but in the states they cap you much lower.
I just bought a golf r. And my wife a gli. If they would have had a jetta r I think I might have gone with that. But nothing wrong with a golf
Nice review. Will be interesting to see how 2022 Civic Si compares.
2:29 I thought the Civic SI and Type-R were coming back next model year after the redesigned version this year?
Hatchback will soon be released this month. Maybe the si and R will debut there or it can debut end of year
Discontinued for this model year, I believe.
He did say that to be fair.
if i had a dollar for every time he said traditional on this review
A more aggressive and sportier front bumper, hood, rear bumper and a spoiler would've been much better than all that Red exterior trim.
Don’t know if they changed it but the GLI is missing a lot of features that are even on the regular Jetta.
I peeked at a GLI at the dealer and it did seem spartan. What’s missing?
Hats off to VW to still offer a decent sports Sedan. Unfortunately they jumped on the SUV bandwagon.
Don't pop the clutch, feed it to have less wheelspin.
how about a test of the DSG version
Man those taillights are definitely influenced by Audi, only thing missing is the connected circles......
Idk, I always preferred the previous generation due to the styling. The currant one is too "puffy" to me, lost all the nice angry lines.
I have a 2020 6MT and i would by no means consider myself great at shifting but like damn those 0-60 were brutally bad
We need it in Europe!!!
Europe has the Octavia vRS which is better
@@kristians2704 why it is better? I rather prefer to drive an original VW not a cheaper imitation of VW.

To unlock the car if/when the FOB dies.
@@vince3851 Take the key out of the fob and insert in the door……… Also VW tells you when the battery in the fob is low.
