I thought those lights were a tad expensive. They are hexagon (self assemble) carport/garage lights. One set is 750$ and covers roughly 1 car in terms of size. It looks like he bought only one and spread it around which is understandable.

The GLI has virtual cockpit, ventilated seats, heated rear seats, wireless charging, ambient lighting,...all for $6K less. Although I prefer the look and am a huge fan of the GTI (I owned a 2012 6th gen), the 20% price difference is huge. I have owned my 2019 35th edition manual for almost 2 years now and have been impressed by how fun it is to drive, the comfort and amazing fuel economy. For the price, it is hard to beat.

I have driven both extensively and have owned many previous generation GTIs including one R32 (IV). Getting into my mid 40s I thought I would end up buying the GLI and really gave it a fair amount of consideration. I ended up with the GTI SE manual transmission. The GTI is just better, bottom line there is no substitute for a GTI and there really never has been. If you are looking at a Passat , Camry or Accord buy the GLI , but don’t think you are buying a GTI with a trunk.

I just bought a white 2021 GTI SE manual transmission the day after Christmas. I traded in my 2011 GTI for the 2021. 10 years in between purchases, the 1st of that body style and the last of that body. Felt serendipitous! I really enjoyed not having a car payment, but I'm super happy with it thus far. Also noted that the price point on the GTI has gone up about 10k in 10 years. Still, I'm such a fan of the manual GTI, nothing beats that drive control and swagger. Thanks for the in depth reviews on both models. My favorite feature is the ability to turn the suspension to soft on crappy roads then switch to sport mode and all hell breaks loose. It really is the Swiss Army knife of a small sport sedan it can do a lot and it’s good for daily driving.

My Jetta has a pass-through (not a GLI). Also, the point of having to get into the trunk to release the rear seats is security. There is no secure storage in the Golf. But, in the Jetta, the trunk is secure because you can't get into it even if you break into the car.

It’s been to the dealer once for a faulty headlight, but that was covered under warranty. No issues otherwise. And I got a great deal because it was a leftover 2019 purchased in early 2020. I don’t understand how they can be so cheap with the GLI materials but it has wireless Apple CarPlay and better tech than the GTI. Same platform and everything. They should really give the option of having this as a base GLI and the autobahn with better quality and feels more premium. I would definitely pay the difference.

When test driving the GLI all --just note the cushion bottom on the front seats. I think on it and the regular Jetta that that seat comes from are deficient. I drove the GLI and a Jetta for a full twenty minutes. In that short twenty I felt the seat was well like cardboard. Other than than that the Jetta and GLI Jetta are very nice drives. Most everything else has to do with cost cutting here in the GLI with upgrades like the Virtual Cockpit in other parts of this car. So a bit of contradition but I get it.. It is a beautiful car to drive though. Very Autobahn like!

Love this video! Just got a 2021 GLI Autobahn after having 2017 GTI and I must say I do prefer the GLI for a variety of reasons. I did test drive a 2022 GTI and felt it lost it's 'versatility' in terms of roominess inside and drove a little too hard for me. The GLI feels a little more confident (to me) when tossing it around in corners and the clutch is more responsive. Granted a lot has improved tech-wise since 2017, but I absolutely in love with the GLI!

The $6k price difference is why I got the GLI. I only got the the GLI S because I wasn’t a fan of the all digital everything. GTI S doesn’t come with lighting package and that was also a dealbreaker for me. Finally rear cargo room behind the rear seats is not even a comparison. I typically take my car on road trips and was able to fit the luggage for 4 adults on an extended weekend vacation without having to use any space in the passenger compartment.

So I have owned a GTI (2017 SE manual) and I drove this generation GLI when it came out. I just felt the quality difference was too large. Ended up buy and an Audi A3 Quattro with the sport package. But I miss my manual. The dual clutch is not tuned as well in the A3 as it is in the VWs. So I am still looking around. Thanks for the video I think you nailed it. I really wanted a Golf R but they were hard to find when I bought my GTI and completely gone when I bought my Audi. I am kind of looking for a lightly used S3 now. Not as useful as either VW but I do like the AWD handling much better.

Is the turbo in the GLI located in the same spot/orientation as the GTI? I'm pretty sure it's different from the R, even though they all have the same engine.

The Jetta GLI model actually goes all the way back to 1984 in North America. There are some missing years, but it's been a partner vehicle to the GTI here for almost the whole time. That's why there have been Edition 30 and Edition 35 models in recent years.

There were a few years when they put the VR6 engine in the Jetta and called it a GLX instead of a GLI. I had a 1998 Jetta GLX, it was a very fun car to drive and silver arrow was the best color ever.

Still love my 2016 Mk6 GLI even though it was quite a bit overshadowed by the GTI with the Gen 3 not being MQB and being more of a test for the Gen 3 EA888 that later came in the GTI with improvements (such as the bigger turbo and valve lift, which the GLI never got until Mk7). I feel a lot of satisfaction when I can get more power out of it since the aftermarket is quite a bit smaller, which is unfortunate, but it's great that VW changed that with the Mk7. Great video! The GLI community is definitely there, but it is obviously much smaller and more niche

@@ethananderson3912 Yeah it didn't and really doesn't still, it's super weird to me too. I have a Unitronic Cold Air intake, APR downpipe to an AWE Track Exhaust, GFB DV+, Unitronic Stage 2 ECU and TCU, Spulen Dogbone mount and insert (may upgrade to an 034 in the future), and Neuspeed RSE10s in Satin Bronze 18x8.5 +45mm with H&R Sports and Continental DWS06 tires that will go on in the spring! I wanted a 6 speed originally, but where I live, a clean title Mk6 isn't too easy to find, and I got a good deal on the DSG. Do you have one too? If so what's done to yours? I like hearing other people's setups.

Nathan Betzinger Ya I have a 2014 GLI Edition 30. I got a Unitronic cold air intake as well, Unitronic intercooler, Unitronic Stage 2 ECU and TCU, Unitronic turbo back exhaust, JNC 042 rims 18x8.5 +35 on Firehawk Indy 500’s. One has a nail in it though😩 Also lowered on Bilstein shocks and H&R sport springs, I have the super sport springs but it rubs. Considering putting them back on though just for the look. How do you like the Spulen dogbone mount and GFB DV? Mine is also a DSG. No complaints, I want to do the CTS big turbo and Unitronic Stage 3 but it’s my daily driver so I’m not sure if it’s a good idea lol.
