I had a new transmission put in, and a month later the transmission is leaking and the dealership was like "well coincidences happen". The entire electrical system went wonky one day and they said it was due to the steering rod. How the F could it be the steering rod? That time it cost $2300 to repair. It was just a shit show. @@thisisntsergio1352 I've had a 35th with a manual trans and it's been great so far. About to turn up the boost amongst a few other mods. Best handling car I've ever had for sure. Gets decent mileage. Quite comfortable. Stereo is sufficient for me...some complain about it but I've never had any complaints. It's got a few squeaks (seat, dash) which is pretty annoying, but if that's the worst I have to deal with....I'll take it
Sergio Martinez I’ve had mine for a year now and the only complaint I have is the sunroof rattles when going over rough road and bumps, but with the radio on I don’t hear it haha other than that no issues at all and I love it, such a fun car to drive, especially with the manual transmission.
I’ve been so excited for this review, I have the 2014 GLI which is the 30th Edition and this being the 35th Edition is really exciting! Awesome review again! You’re videos are just getting better and better!
I purchased a used 2014 GLI with 30K miles that had a rattling noise coming from the sunroof area and when I'd take onto the highway at around 50mph & up! I had to sell it because that bothered me a lot. Other that though I have to say I loved it, actually looks better than this new one in my opinion!
Greg Holman That’s crazy! Mine also has the rattling from the sunroof area but it goes away when I close the visor part or sometimes when it is pushed all the way back. I’ve done a few things to the car so the rattling doesn’t bother me enough that I’d want to sell it. Glad to hear you enjoyed the car as well!
I was just on the Tail of the Dragon yesterday in my '16 GTI. Drove thru the inn parking lot where the had the GLIs on display. A red one got behind me on the dragon. Nice looking car.
I have the 2017 GLI DSG autobahn package. I appreciate its handling characteristics with the shift paddle. enjoy it every single day. Braking system works just great. It looks like a sleeper but perform like Audi. Nice set of winter tires will keep her stick on the road in the snow storm. . Best bank for the buck. Cheers from Canada.
Need to remember that the typical A3 makes 30 more HP than the GLI and has the traction advantage of AWD, which tends to offset the weight penalty shockingly well. The GLI would be equivalent to only the most basic A3 trim (same HP, FWD only). Can't beat having a manual option, though!
MeltingRubberZ28 You pick up about 80 HP without further modification and you pick the same up on an A3 so that buys you no advantage at all. And regardless of the power, you still end up traction limited.
MeltingRubberZ28 No it isn't, because new for new or used for used, the difference between a GTI and an A3 is not 25 grand. And again, still traction-limited in the GTI. There is a reason a GTI TCR is a whole second slower in the 0-60 sprint than a Golf R despite similar power and less weight, and the same applies here.
I totally agree with your take on the volume button icon not staying in one position! 😂😂😂 By far the best auto journalist! Keep up the phenomenal work!

Just picked up a GLI 35th Edition - coming from a previous generation GLI. Current GLI is so much better in every way. Fast, quiet and tight. Door closes with a THUD unlike previous GLI and more like they used to. I liked the Pure Grey in the videos, not so much in real life - ended up getting the Pyrite Silver. Not perfect (needs vents in back and garage door openers) but great value. Love It!

Thanks for focusing on the manuals, I’m sure their dual clutch is nice but nothing compares to the engagement of a good stick. I’m with you, this GLI is special and VW did an amazing good job with this package and I was considering an Elantra Sport in manual before seeing this video.

I have to say, your reviews my favorite to watch. You do really well going into detail especially with “closing the door”, one of my favorite parts of your videos haha. I’ve watched your previous VW videos and it seems you find a lot of negative things about them, which it’s your opinion but man you did great overcoming all that on this video even though you did mention some negative things. This video is the reason I ended up buying a 2019 VW GLI and I love it. Knee up the reviews and great work. Much respect! P.S. Jason is really awesome. Hope to see another appearance with him.
Rewatching this video again for like the millionth time... I like how you try to be so opinionated towards the Volkswagen by being extra picky, strict, attention to detail, in depth, negative, but I can tell deep down inside you enjoyed it. In other words, no matter how hard you were on it, your positives hugely outweighed the negativity you had towards it because your thoroughly enjoyed it. I can tell by the excitement of your voice. Still glad and happy I purchased the 35th Anniversary GLI 6 speed manual, love it! Hope you are this detailed towards all your future reviews 🙂
I've been waiting for this review so much! This car instanly flew to the top of my interest when I heard about it last month. Definitely will look into picking one of these up one day
As a former owner of a 2011 5 cylinder i loved 5s sounds I think it was the best car I've ever owned.i have to tell the truth it required fixes unlike my 2011 Scion tc which the only thing it required a very expensive trip to the dealership for alternator and battery in the VW Jetta with same mileage never cost a dime unfortunately I total it going though a stop sign that put in the wrong position by home owner not the city 😡
I really like this, my GTI was in for service recently and I had a Jetta SEL as a loaner which I really enjoyed but felt was underpowered. This probably hits the sweet spot.
Great Review! You are my favorite channel for New Car Reviews. The Jetta Needs "AWD" then I wouldn't get tire hop. I drive like you guys and I always push the car to its limits. VW put an AWD so I can buy this Jetta in a heartbeat!!!!
I am currently leasing an S3 and am making the move to return to a manual! To me, the S3 is actually faster than anyone needs, unless you are going to track it. I've test driven the GLI and am picking mine up tomorrow. Plenty of grunt and row your own! Bigger trunk and bigger back seat. Ventilated seats! Some chintzy materials - namely the AC controls, but nothing I can't live with. I agree with the review that the cost-cutting is wisely placed. Materials are obviously higher grade on the Audi, but not worth the premium price tag when compared to VW. A more appropriate comparison might be the A3 2.0 with sport package. Similar engine output, but again no manual!. I love 19" wheels on my S3, but I've replaced 1 and repaired 1 - over $1,000 out-of-pocket. The roads where I live are terrible though. The 18's shod in 45 series rubber should provide a nice buffer to the rims. Ride is very comfortable on the GLI - more so than the S3, but still sporty...
Hey Bruce. I’ve driven s3’s and golf r’s a ton over the last 3 years. You truly are only paying for the Audi badge with s3. Golf r drives almost identical and for significantly less. If you have any more question let me know. 👍
@@pleco101 Got the 35th anniversary edition last september with the DSG. So far have had no problems at all. No squeeks, nothing. Feels more powerful than 228 hp.
Sofyan, by far the best comprehensive review so far. Jason it’s great to see you again. I’m looking for a daily driver and was going to wait for the next gen mk8 gti before I choose but here in the states we probably won’t see it until spring of 2021. I wish they had a few other color choices though.
I would get this over the Accord and Civic SI. Great bargain, great tech, great price and great performance. VW really made it perfect without stepping into Audi’s heels.
kermit1 you forgot about the oil dilution issue. I don’t mind much about resale value, this isn’t a Kia. My Audi Q5 was a trouble free car for 7 years.
@@kermit1 new Gen 2.0tsi mqb cars are amazingly reliable. People are pushing double the stock power on a warranty and having no issues up into 100k miles +. You really think. Anew car won't depreciate? The money you save on this over a 2.0t accord would equate to you saving money over a top spec accord. And let's not mention tune only warrantied by vw this will smoke a type R, all for less and not styled like a kit car
While I have always liked the GLI the only problem with it is that the GTI exists. People want hatchbacks over a sedan, for the most part. Good to see VW up the power in the car. Another great review!
Beg to differ. VW sold more than twice as many Jettas as Golfs in the US in 2018. GTI's may well outsell GLI's but overall the Jetta is far more popular than the Golf, even with its variants.
@@kevinnorwood7355 Sorry if I misinterpreted your comment that "People want hatchbacks over a sedan..." Can't comment on what people "want" but it's clear what people actually buy. As for what you see, that can be very misleading. I, too, see GTI's more often than Jettas. But I attribute that to the fact that I own a GTI and my attention is drawn to that particular model.
@@stephenhendricks103 no worries I went back and it did look like that's what I stated. I looked the new Jetta GLI up and sadly you can't get the plaid seating. I like leather okay enough but LOVE the plaid! Yet the plaid is more for the GTI.
@@kevinnorwood7355 That's right, baby. GTI owners would come to Wolfsburg with torches held high if any model other than a GTI was fitted with plaid seats. :)

HOLY SHIT THAT EXHAUST NOTE. What is with nowadays' vehicles being so quiet. What's the purpose for that. And also what's happening to the airflow in the exhaust?
The Tail! The Tapoco Lodge is awesome. I was lucky enough to 'attend' a Pagani Huayra meet last October that stopped off exactly where this test drive event was held.
B HM Yeah, it's definitely a pano tease, but it is slightly larger than the standard roofs that competitors use. I'm more concerned about the difference in wind noise with that slide over design (in both vented and open positions). I like to have the sunroof open at freeway speeds when the weather is nice (probably why I'm going prematurely deaf).
I can't BELIEVE how bad these look in video and photos.....in person it looks AWESOME. The new Jetta and GLi do not photograph well at all (common problem with most new car designs imo) If you haven't seen it in person, you really should reserve judgement until you can stand in front of it in person. Excellent job, my wallet is twitching again.....👌
In person, that front grill is just as frumpy as it looks in pictures...well, almost. Somehow, the GLI in white looks best to me, I don't know why. But it would seriously look better with foglights/drls down low like the e-golfs. And if the front upper grill was re-worked a bit. We can hope for the refresh in a couple years
Just Bought a GLI Autobahn Manual in the matte grey. I am so freaking happy with it. I got it out the door with all fees for 27700. Navigation did not come installed but I believe the dealer has the SD card you need for the navigation to be able to be in the virtual cockpit.

@@squidproquo2241 yup.. I think the same...
Probably some people still don't know why you said that 🤔
Langolier what??
If the GLI sedan had the GTI front end, I think the design would be way more aesthetically pleasing.
This design is magnificent, i feel like i want to buy it with my imaginary money.
I've been waiting for this review so much! This car instanly flew to the top of my interest when I heard about it last month. Definitely will look into picking one of these up one day
The GLI does have adaptive cruise control :O Other than that I loved the review! Great job!!
Only the Autobahn
I live close to this road in Knoxville, TN. You should come back in the summer! It's a lot of fun.
Jason Cammisa!!! Awesome to see him again. Great episode!
You should have your on show on MTV or something...you the man!!
Another fantastic review and it's great to see Jason in this review. Glad he's back to auto reviews.
Yay discount Adam Sandler, motortrend hasn't been the same
What's motor trend? No Adam Sandler? You're dead to me...
man i love your reviews, me and my family have been using them to find good starting points for finding new cars
I love Jason Cammisa!
You're a great car reviewer! I enjoy your videos. Great work!
This is a Gorgeous car!!!
Good job VW 👍
Redline is the best car review channel 😀
You always do such a great job reviewing the entire vehicle. Love the new GLI
Okay, dedicated LED everything as far as exterior lighting... except front turn signals? Really? Cmon now.
Yeah that irritates me, exact same thing on the new body Escalade. You pay for a 60k suv and get halogen bulb turn signals 🙄
Mix of LED and incandescent should be illegal
Ooooo Wow look at those LED's wait WTH are are those stupid yellow turn signals?
It's really not that serious.
It is when I’m paying up towards 30 grand for a car
And that 30 grand would probably be slightly higher with led signals. They'll inflate prices easy over something simple. So 🤷
That’s the best looking Jetta I’ve ever seen. Wow.
The car sounds amazing!!!
I really like this, my GTI was in for service recently and I had a Jetta SEL as a loaner which I really enjoyed but felt was underpowered. This probably hits the sweet spot.
We were going to replace my wife's 2015 Highline manual with a new similar one but the 147 hp did not do it for us so have purchased a 35 Edition
Can all your drive partners be Jason C please.
I've seen high school girls do better burn-outs than him.
Kyle Cordiano right!
i agree there is great camera chemistry between them
Great Review! You are my favorite channel for New Car Reviews.
The Jetta Needs "AWD" then I wouldn't get tire hop. I drive like you guys and I always push the car to its limits. VW put an AWD so I can buy this Jetta in a heartbeat!!!!
What makes a great car review in your eyes? I'm genuinely curious as I'd like to work on putting out great content!
Great review. Please tell VW to bring the T-ROC R to the US and please get your hands on a Golf R to review. I’d like your take vs the S3.
I’m Canadian and I was not a fan of Hatch backs.
3 years ago I bought my first hatch, Mini Cooper S and I fell in love with hatches. 😅
Just picked up the 35th anniversary edition of this car today, its a beut
sounds great. beautiful car.
What's typical selling price after incentives etc?
around 28,500 but im leasing it for 280 a month, so not too bad.
@@Davido50 I got mine for 23k OTD with a 1500 trade.
Jason downshifted into first?! So smooth too... legend
Best Redline videos ever, why? Jason included
Jason! MT is NOT the same without him. Which is why i stopped watching their videos.

Motorcyclist Mag also lost a lot of gusto when MTOD snatched Ari and Zack away.
I haven't see him this excited over a car in a long time.
I would get this over the Accord and Civic SI. Great bargain, great tech, great price and great performance. VW really made it perfect without stepping into Audi’s heels.
DoYouJ? You forgot the part about poor reliability and resale value
kermit1 you forgot about the oil dilution issue.
@@stephenhendricks103 I never said one outsells the other. I DO know I see twice as many GTIs then I DO Jettas.
Sure would like to have seen your impressions with the DSG.
John Edmond don’t worry, the DSG is as wonderful as always I’m betting
Dsg has the sexiest shifts in the game
don't need to when there's a manual option
I bought a 2017 GLI with a automatic transmission . In sport mode I swear that 0-60 has got to be under 6 sec .. I love that car . everything is premium when I want and total beast mode when I need it

HOLY SHIT THAT EXHAUST NOTE.
What is with nowadays' vehicles being so quiet. What's the purpose for that. And also what's happening to the airflow in the exhaust?
European laws are getting strict.
The Tail! The Tapoco Lodge is awesome. I was lucky enough to 'attend' a Pagani Huayra meet last October that stopped off exactly where this test drive event was held.
wow... for the first time, I think I would prefer a sedan over a hatchback...
That first burnout was epic!
Make mine a bright red Autobahn with the stick. Liking that "half-ass" panoramic sunroof too.
buoyant69 that’s what pissed me off and kept me from pulling the trigger. The glass is big, but from the inside, it’s regular size. Pfft!
B HM
Yeah, it's definitely a pano tease, but it is slightly larger than the standard roofs that competitors use. I'm more concerned about the difference in wind noise with that slide over design (in both vented and open positions).
I like to have the sunroof open at freeway speeds when the weather is nice (probably why I'm going prematurely deaf).
buoyant69 it’s not meant to be a pano sunroof that’s just how VW makes there sunroofs
f181234 wrong. It’s definitely sold as a pano sunroof.

I can't BELIEVE how bad these look in video and photos.....in person it looks AWESOME. The new Jetta and GLi do not photograph well at all (common problem with most new car designs imo)
If you haven't seen it in person, you really should reserve judgement until you can stand in front of it in person.
We can hope for the refresh in a couple years
Could not agree more! Looks so much better in person. Not sure why that is.
Man, haven't seen JC for ages. Great review.
Nice review. I think it would be a tough call between this and the WRX.
If you're older than 30 I'd go VW.
wvusmc you’re probably right right, but the non-sti isn’t too over the top, and the awd is nice.
@@mfmf100 Subaru will be releasing the 2020 Legacy with a turbo. I will probably trade in my Forester XT for one.

Just Bought a GLI Autobahn Manual in the matte grey. I am so freaking happy with it. I got it out the door with all fees for 27700. Navigation did not come installed but I believe the dealer has the SD card you need for the navigation to be able to be in the virtual cockpit.
George Hill does the manual come w autonomous emergency braking?
