What do you think of the Jetta GLI? Better deal than a GTI? Take it over an Elantra Sport or Civic Si?
TheStraightPipes
it’s better than a GTI
I’d have to think if I would be comparing it with a Elantra sport or a civic si
I prefer 2019 Honda civic si
I'd take the 2020 Si
I like understated - but it'd probably take the GTI over the others since its a hatch. A hot hatch is the next best thing to a battle wagon.
I Have a GTI, GTI all the way
You guys are basically millennial car dads and I love you guys for it
Gabriel Flores dads that are car enthusiasts?
wut?
I have this car, they missed a few things, like that it has Golf R brakes in the front, colors are customizable among other things. I agree with Yuri about the pumped in audio, I disabled it on the first drive. It’s a very sporty, practical and fun car. It also has huge aftermarket support since it shares its powertrain and platform with the GTI.
Underrated comment
You can fix the auto upshift by getting the 6-speed manual.
Rev hang, long gearing (I hear)
@@GUITARTIME2024 Nope, has slight rev hang, BETTER then the awful cheap WRX, and no long gearing. The manual has shorter gearing up top and slightly longer down low so it evens out
@@roboticvenom1935 very cool. Thx.
@itsadubsession on a dual clutch you have to replace 2 clutches when they wear out
@itsadubsession I've had 3 VW Jetta's with a manual transmission. I've never had to replace the clutch on any of them.
If you drift in an electric car, then is it called the electric slide?
This.
Retweet.
Still power slide but who cares about electric cars
I don't I only care about electric blenders & trimmers
Congratulations. You have officially won the comments section.
By that logic if you slide a petrol car, then its called petrol slide
Tokyo Drift 2: Electric Flicky-Flick
Ahahhah
That's Pretty Cool!

Bought this car around the time this review came out. From first hand experience, I can say it’s a really good driving experience. Not crazy fast, but I keep up with my buddies with their WRX, 350Z and 370Z’s. When I wanna be comfortable, it drives super comfy. When I wanna go a little nuts, it lets me go a little nuts. Only complaint is the lack of grip. It runs 225’s, so when it rains, your tires are pretty much guaranteed to spin off a normal stop light start. Despite that, I absolutely love the car. Getting a cat back exhaust for it as it is a bit on the quiet side, so I really can’t wait to drive her even more :)
Hu5kyy I completely agree, I’m getting a JB4 and doing a custom exhaust set up.
Whats your average fuel economy
We didn’t get factory GPS in the states. So the display is a bit pointless. There sooo much aftermarket support. A simple tune and bam 80hp and do a DSG tune to get full control. I think the GLI has the most potential to be the fastest FWD sedan. Stage 3 it and done.
With the LSD it’s ok. Good rubber and they hook up of. But they are killer from a roll
@@layne4376 so civic type r?
That voids that warranty.
@@chocolatewheelchair not through APR it doesn't. Local VW dealer handed me an APR brochure, it will still be fully warrantied. I'm sure it's like 50% more than going to other companies, or to APR before they were fully sponsored, but man...
Chris Melisse what does APR mean in this context?
I have this car and I love it. It’s the perfect 4 door sedan with a lot space and a turbo to go fast for when u need the speed. I’m 6’3 and have trouble fitting into sport cars but this feels right at home!
1:17 That guage animation was lit.
As always, you guys are great and really honest about the GLI review.
I would stick with my '08 GTI with almost 234,000 miles on it.
Keep doing what you're doing!
Finally! I've been waiting for you guys to review the GLI. Great review as always! Thank you!
This is the second review of the GLI DSG I've seen that notes the fact that the transmission automatically upshifts when set in manual mode. If that's the case it's quite different from the behavior of the same transmission in the GTI. I initially believed it was a failure on the part of the reviewer to engage manual mode properly. Now I'm not so sure. Here's the way the DSG works in my GTI.
(1) Move the console shift to the right. That locks the transmission in manual (i.e Tiptronic) mode.
(2) Select the desired gear with either the paddles or the console shifter (forward for upshift, backward for downshift.)
Following that procedure the transmission stays in the selected gear all the way to redline. No automatic upshifts. While in manual mode the transmission will automatically downshift to second gear as one slows to a stop, first to second gear at about 5 mph and then to first gear as the car comes to a stop. Otherwise, however, the car remains in the selected gear regardless of throttle position and acceleration.
It is possible to select manual mode temporarily by use of the paddles alone without moving the console shift to the right. If the transmission is in "auto" mode and either of the paddles is used
the transmission changes to manual mode and can be controlled by the paddles for a short time. However, the car will revert to "auto" mode and automatically upshift after a few moments. Is it possible that was the procedure you guys followed? In addition to the possible difference between the GLI and GTI there's one other possibility. My GTI is a 2018 model with the six speed DSG. I haven't seen any reviews of the 2019 GTI with the seven speed DSG that mentioned any automatic shifts but I suppose it's possible the reviewers missed the behavior.
In any event if the DSG behavior in the GLI is as you describe it, it's a big disappointment. And assuming it doesn't apply to the GTI, it's a significant difference between the vehicles despite supposedly having the same engines and drive trains.
EDIT: Did some further checking with my local VW dealer and more importantly with my local APR tuning shop, Achtuning, who perform more tunes on VW's than just about anyone in the country. As I suspected, there's no difference between the DSG transmission tuning in the GTI and GLI. Furthermore, if the transmission is put in Tiptronic mode with the console shifter it will hold a selected gear up to redline. At that point it will upshift but not before.
Yuri: "It's the appropriate amount of looks for the speed". Nailed it!
Best VW wheels are hands down the 19" Pretorias, the optional upgrade on the DCC equipped Mk7 R's.
I've been waiting for this review from you guys forever! thank you!!!!
Thanks for posting this guys! I was waiting to see what you guys thought about this GLI
How do you halfway pass the visor test VW? Either commit or GTFO. half pass, full fail.
My GTI passes the test 100% Just thought I'd mention that
Why is that so important to them must be a Canada thing. I have never use my visor on then side window. And I've only seen my mom do it back on the 90s
Kevan Banngertir depends on where you live cause up north in the fall and winter the sun is very low so it’ll get right in your face even from the side window.
@@Wilolino nah it's called window tint
They're a little too fixated on the visor thing. As long as the driver's side does it, I'm cool with it.
GTI all the way! Welcome to the GTI squad Yuri!
GLI is a cool car, but GTI for the win. especially if you're getting a car for fun/performance.
You guys make the best car videos on RUclips hands down... Keep it up!
When you talked about VW wheels, I was just thinking I love my Mk5 GTI telephone dial wheels and hey! there they are!! Love that you got a Golf. Keep going guys.
oh boy that fake sound, sounds like some cars from the first Gran Turismo
@ It is synthesized engine sound, not just pumped in.
@ If it's not the way the engine actually sounds, then it's fake.
Sold
@ it's not "pumped" in, there's a little puck that vibrates the windshield.
Yeah I go and turn off the pumped in fake noise and drive mine in sports besides that. All good there. Also they didnt mention you can change the ambient lighting.
This is on my list of affordable dream cars for me, I have a 2012 Altima and I love it
Really enjoyed the "live drive" yesterday lol hope you guys do more!
Hey guys, I just bought a 2021 manual GLI and am picking it up tomorrow morning! I test drove both the Civic SI and the Elantra N-Line, and honestly, GLI was more fun to drive, more loaded for the price and much faster than both of them! It was a no brainer to buy it over both! And with bargain, I got it brand new for $28,889. And now it comes only in one trim, the autobahn fully loaded! And wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay
I got a 2020 GLI Autobahn about a month ago, white with black trim edition. And it's perfect so far. The color and trim are unique and no others around. I'd absolutely splurge for the Autobahn edition any day, based on the extras. Sure, some of the interior plastics are a bit cheap, but nothing I care about is sub-par. Drives like a dream and I love the digital cockpit and ambient lighting. All the classy features are there. So far, I simply love this car. I traded in my Kia Stinger and I like this way more, FWIW. Other than some of those interior things, the drive and feel are much more refined.
WOW I traded in a 2019 V6 3lt camar rs for one too!
There's a few audio issues with crackling and noise but review is great as always.
Michael Pruett we got new mics last week. That should fix it
@@YuriTereshyn woah thanks for the reply! It's a perfect time to ask if y'all have ever though of making a video about how you make videos. I'm a camera/video geek and would love to see what mics/camera/lenses and stuff y'all use. How does the straight pipes sausage get made??
Michael Pruett from what I remember on TheSmokingTire podcast they like to keep how they film their videos a bit of a secret. Similar to how they attempt to hide the location of cliche corner. It’s just part of their formula that makes them unique and I assume they like knowing they are the only ones that can do these videos the way they do.
I’m soo addicted to your videos!! Just one more video, for now
I work at a Volkswagen dealership and it’s always a blast to drive these GLI’s. Especially with the 6 speed manual transmission.
I've heard Rev hang, Long gearing
Yuri bought a GTI?! where's the video?
Yeah, I'm surprised too. He was all Hyundai > VW, and now he has a GTI, and my brain can't take it. Explanation needed! Full video! LIVE DRIVE QA IN THE GTI!
Evan R Everyone talks about hatchbacks they’d take over the GTI but when its time to buy, they all go for the GTI.
@@abbashaider8668 It's the proven package that everyone else is trying to unseat. And best of all, they've got beloved version of it out there on the used market. All of the other recent competitors are only 2-3 years old tops. Nobody's hunting for a sport-trim Elantra from 7 years ago.
I bet Hyundai madddddddd
Shawn Richardson he bought it for his wife im pretty sure
I’m a proud MK7 Autobahn GTI owner but the updates to the GLI are nice. I’d love cooled seats
I traded in my 2015 gti se for the 2019 gli Autobahn. I wish I didn't, the gti is the better car. Also the ventilated seats are straight trash! Even while wearing shorts I can't tell they're even on!
gabriel wilson that’s a bummer. The GTI definitely has more balance and prominence but I can see why people go to the GLI. For me the GTI makes sense.
Nice reviewe , I have a soft spot for gli . The mk4 gli still being my favorite. I love my mk6 gli and will eventually upgrade to the mk7.

“If I liked German cars..”
Hope you like your mk6 Yuri! I just got a mk6 R in a manual a few months ago and I credit you guys for convincing me to go the manual route. So thanks! I love it so much.
Nick Laurin its made in Mexico
The turbo just doesn't have enough flow to really push to redline.
All the power is under 6000 rpm. It is quicker to short shift even if it is not as cool :)
But when you throw a big turbo on it and a chip then you're going to want to change that
@@carterdavis2793 any good tuner will tune the TCM when tuning for a bigger turbo that has enough flow at higher rpm
@You Wish you can tune that so the transmission won't upshift until you decide to
I drive one of these and honestly I don't notice a power dropoff after 6000. May just be me, though.
@The Insufferable Tool lol you are tuned.. we are talking about stock cars.. get your shit right!

VW makes some amazing looking cars at the moment. I love the Golf, Arteon, Touran and Tiguan!

what about the GTI? 😭
(i am kidding, don't go crazy here. lol)
@@LuisGonzalez-sb9lx LMFAO your tase is broken 🤣😭 Volkswagen makes some really nice looking cars.
Please review Volkswagen Arteon and also can you compare it with Kia Stinger
Stinger is gonna destroy Arteon. Test drove an Arteon yesterday and it felt like a Passat with 10 extra hp, total snooze of a car
@@edwardkondek2548 Not True, 87 octane maybe. But the rest is not true.
@@edwardkondek2548 you have proof ?
@@edwardkondek2548 That may be true, but the handling was washy and unrefined, and that’s what matters more to me as a Golf owner anyway. The boring interior and boring drive and general unspecialness of the Arteon was what made me think of the Passat. It was peppy enough, but not that much more peppy than a Passat (a non-GT one at that). The interior was also not nearly as good as that in the Stinger, except I would take the Arteon infotainment (or any VW/Audi infotainment for that matter) over the Kia/Hyundai infotainment in the Stinger. Maybe the Arteon could compete performance-wise with the four-cylinder Stinger but a twin-turbo V6 Stinger GT would leave that thing in the dust. The Arteon doesn’t have a V6 because it’s not supposed to be a sports car. Frankly, it doesn’t know what it wants to be, and that was clear from driving it. To be clear I’ve not driven a Stinger, but I’ve sat in a bunch. The Stinger is just a more special car in my opinion, not only because it’s a halo car for Kia but also because the Arteon is so aggressively not special. The Arteon has infotainment and brand heritage over the Stinger, but the Stinger (from what I hear) handles and accelerates better, has a better interior, and will definitely continue to sell better. As far as looks, they’re both drop dead gorgeous though.
@rockn roll The materials definitely felt better than in the Arteon SEL that I drove. I wasn't a huge fan of the stuck-on screen in the Stinger and I think VW infotainment is generally better, especially since they moved the climate vents below the screen like in the new GLI. The climate vents, climate controls, speakers, and gauge cluster screen, and steering wheel were all really nice in the Stinger. But I think the big issue was that the Stinger felt like something way better than your average Kia, while the Arteon was just boring old Volkswagen on the inside. Nothing wrong with the Arteon's interior, but just felt like they phoned it in and cloned the Passat or Tiguan interior rather than making it look just as cool inside as it does outside (which is the case with the Stinger)
So I got the first one (35th) arrived in Ottawa back in april... after 21000km I'm very happy with it.
5:30 - "ON OFF ON OFF ON AUTO UP SHIFT"
lmao idk why that cracked me up so hard.
Love Yuri’s shirt!!!
Is there a possibility of doing an A35 AMG and a M135i comparison test?
@Amin Haq Ok, but I would still like to see a comparison test between the A35 and the new M135i.
@@FamousDMagnificent this is pointless, the M135i got replaced with the M140i.
TheDeepShadow No, the 140i got replaced with the 135i
Correct me if I am wrong, but the A35 AMG is not sold in North America. I've heard rumors of it possibly coming in 2020, but I cannot confirm this...
FamousDMagnificent both not wrong, at first, the M135i got replaced by the M140i, but now the M140i got replaced again with the M135i(x).
I LOVE hearing any reference to my Chevy SS! It is so shallow of me, but I’ve rewinded the mentioning of the SS being cool like 10 times!
It is cool, should go without saying
So pumped me and Yuri are GTI twins! Same generation same color and two door nice pick!
When you push the pedal all the way to the ground, you depress a button that allows you to hit the redline.
Wym lol
Finally!!! a car that a regular person can buy!!
Gotta be honest, I don't know much about cars neither interested in them, but some reason I like your channel. I can't wait to see you guys analyze VW ID3.
Drove one this last weekend. Stick shift fixes all that the guys complained about. Great car.
What are your thoughts on the model 3?
There should be a few seconds where you include mpg, it’s 2019 brethren
In the city, your mpg will depend on how heavy your right foot is. I get anywhere from 20 mpg to 27 mpg in the city. But I just averaged about 39 mpg on a 300 mile trip to my in-laws (37 on the way there and 41 back). VW quotes 32 mpg on the highway, so I never expected to get closer to 40.
Thanks for doing the GLI!
To reach the redline you need to fully engage the gas pedal to the point it clicks at the bottom.
The gallons bit was killer 😂
GLi =GTi Large Idea
I love my GLi
Wish US market had all the options you guys got.
Steven L what do they have that we don’t get ?
@@devn3813 Canadian spec got the adaptive dampers (35th anniversary only in USA, although I think it's being added to autobahn for 2020), nav system, adaptive cruise control, and lane keep assist (not available on any trim in the USA).
@@historymjh I've long believed that someone at VW Canada has embarrassing photos of German VW executives. That would account for the different trim features available in Canada and the US. :) The difference between US and Canadian spec GTI's have historically followed the same pattern though to a lesser degree.
In the case of the GLI I think VW has decided that their future in the US lies with the Jetta rather than the Golf. VW has found time after time that US consumers shy away from European spec models n favor of larger, cheaper vehicles. (e.g Euro Passat vs US Passat; Euro Tiguan vs US Tiguan; Touareg vs Atlas) VW has elected to drop the base Golf in 2020 in the US while the Jetta line-up has been extended to include the GLI. The Jetta is no longer even sold in Germany.
There won't be a 2020 GTI or Golf R in the US either but that follows a pattern VW has employed in the past when the GTI and Golf R move from one generation to the next. (There was no 2014 GTI after the MK6 production ceased in Germany in 2013.) VW assures us that there will be an eighth generation GTI and Golf R for the US but unless each model retains its iconic status I suspect even that decision might be revisited in the next couple of years. Those of us who love GTI's and Golf R's are keeping our fingers crossed.
@@devn3813 The Manual models have options(Driver Assistance Package) that gets Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist, and Light Assist (High beam control). They also get Windshield in heat-insulating glass, with heated lower wiper section, Discover Media Satellite Navigation. I seen some review models come with Heated rear seats with an air vent.
Stephen Hendricks There will be a 2020 Golf GTI.
I love the 80s techno music at the beginning
The upshifting thing will for sure be able to fix in a big of time in the system (if you want to chip tune IT anyway)

Fastest FWD sedan has to be the 3500S toyota Aurion, 333 horsepower from a 3.5L supercharged v6?
In Australia we got a TRD aurion :D
@@2sheification Just THROW IT IN OUR FACE LIKE THAT OKAY
From my quick googling, that Aurion does 0-60 MPH (0-100 KMH) in 6.1 seconds, while modern V6 FWD sedans are closer to the 5.5 second area. C/D tested the Maxima at 5.8 seconds, V6 Camry at 5.8 seconds. The fastest is probably something like the 2004 Dodge Neon SRT-4, which did 0-60 in 5.3 seconds.
Then again, maybe they meant top speed comparisons, which are often electronically limited.
Thanks for bringing this semi attractive car to my mental inventory of attractive cars
Ford Taurus sho and Pontiac Grand Prix gxp
I can’t believe you didn’t get a manual. I have a US 35th (only version with DCC) and I love it. Yes, more comfy and better ride than the GTI, but that is why I bought it. Some of us don’t need a race car go cart 100% of the time. This is a great compromise and is still fun to drive. And a bargain!
Great review! I currently have a 14 SE with an APR Stage 1. I don't think the new GLI is enough to make me switch. I wonder if the auto upshift affects performance.
Is this VW Jetta GLI as reliable as a Mazda 3. Mazda 6 or Mazda Miata? I want a fun driving reliable car that I can keep and enjoy for 10+ years.
Probably not
My FoST does the same for the Visor Test!!! Why, Ford?!
great review super love it
FYI, I bought this car (Pure Gray, 6mT, Autobahn) and with the optional summer tires it's a blast when you want it to be, and totally comfortable when you just wanna cruise. Terrific car for the money, however the GTI is still the 'nicer' car of the two (and more $$$)
Just needs the APR Stage 1 tune and better tires.....APR also has a Transmission tune so I wonder if it can fix that auto upshift🤔
The APR TCU(DSG) tune fixes the auto upshifts
May as well buy a Golf R then lol
@@trumpetdudekjk No ya good, Jetta GLI's are around 24k in the US. Golf R's are around 38k.

Intercepting Fist Stage 1 doesn’t void warranty. Lots of VW dealerships are actually selling the vehicles stock with the tune already included..
This car is so close to being good. Volkswagen needs a refresh across the board.
This car isn't good? You can't even say it's good?
You have the most ridiculous standards ever to not even call this car good, this is undoubtedly a better value then the Civic si if you compare interiors, value, features, performence, everything etc.
@@roboticvenom1935 yeah, it's basically a civic good comparison.
My gli is making around 520-530whp with a hybrid turbo, port injection, and many supporting mods. Very fun and fast car for the price
Watching this a second time because I’m actually thinking about getting one.
I currently have a GTI, but I need a little more room; I’m also moving across country and only taking my lady’s car, so I’ll be looking to get another car when we get settled. The 6 speed manual intrigues me, and if I’m correct it has the LSD and DCC/Brake combo to go with all the other GTI goodies? Couple that with the LED projectors and that’s everything I wanted in the GTI as a sedan.
This is most DEFINITELY a better value then Civic si and Elantra sport overall, it's also much faster in a straight line and has bigger brakes then both.
Robotic Venom less reliable
The All Season Tires are holding it back🤮
Pilot Sport 4S tires. My GTI lost grip on every turn without them
Tell me about it, Indy 500 tires on my Mk7 Gti were so much better than the stock all seasons. It really does hold the car back.
Yuri, my man, your GTI looks neat
I like the new straight pipes T-shirt with the sun visor on it.
I literally bought this exact car because of this review! I freakin love it 😎
10:15 Fastest FWD sedan is probably the FWD 2019 3.0T Lincoln MKZ, has 350hp & 400 lb ft torque going to the front wheels.
Its also probably the most pointess FWD vehicle. My family test drove a Continental 2.7T that was FWD and it had horrific torque steer. 335 lb/fts torque.
It’s an AWD
Fastest around a track - Type R
@@BeesonsCars you can get it with AWD and the power is upped to 400HP which is pretty insane for a car in that class.. 0-60 time has also been reported at under 5 seconds.
