CarsandCameras is going to the track! Go Power Sports sent us a Tillotson T4 package; a high quality asphalt circuit racing go kart that we're assembling, breaking in, and taking to the track in today's episode! The Tillotson T4 is powered by the classic Tillotson 225cc engine, producing 15 horsepower. In this variant, the engine has a 6500RPM rev limiter, has an hour meter installed, an anti tampering device, and more subtle changes that make it different than the standard Tillotson 225cc racing engine. This $4,250 package is certainly more expensive than our regular back yard builds, but it proves to be a reliable, low cost option for getting into pro level karting!

😂🎉party time! Love the track. John you should cut out a spot back in your field and do some paving, make a wee little track with asphalt or something. That would be cool. Or even just dirt but you need to make it super smooth. This way u guys can do more of these fast racing type builds too

Kids at my school like to pick on me because im a go kart guy. I think they think go karts are stupid kids toys but oh no. I've been laughed at many times trying to tell people these karts are no joke. I've been in arguments about weather racing is a sport because people don't think it is physically challenging. They would be so surprised to find out how hard it is to handle high power go karts.

I got to ride one of those 2 stroke race carts. Those are Hella fast. I was on and a party group came out on their rentals, like this track. I was whipping past everyone, I was 15 I think. I wasn't even really supposed to be able to drive it because of my age, but my dad vouched for me and I was able to drive it. The people up on the balcony who were watching the other rental session were more impressed by my driving. These people on the track had no idea I was on a faster kart. My dad was at track level and he could hear other people, being like I don't think he is going to get past that group and I would find a gap and they were like wow, I can't believe he was able to pass them and stuff like that. My Dad was just smiling the whole time and was telling them that's my son. I think that might have been the only time he has done that my whole life.

Use to race them as a teen, everyone thought we were a "terror" on the normal 6HP go kart a kid might normally have.. The dads all came out when we pulled the racing cart out to fly down the streets at 100mph (private neighborhood so no worries) and cheered us on to push it.

The castor on the front wheels is what is making the frame flex when you turn the wheel. It's one of the biggest adjustments for race cars. When you turn the wheel the inside front and outside rear tires will have more weight on them because the front tire is pushed down due to the castor angle. It's a cool effect that helps the car turn.. if it starts to slide and you correct by turning the wheel the other way the effect is reversed and will help gather the kart back up before you spin out.

Andrew at Tillotson and myself created the badging for the Tillotson engines about 6 years ago. E for EPA, R is for RACE and RS is for RACE SPEC. I took inspiration from automotive classifications. The Tillotson 212E is an EPA regulated engine, The 196R and 212R are racing engines and the 225RS is the Race Spec because it was designed around the concept of spec class racing like spec Miata. The T4 Class is a fully spec class very similar to Margay's Ignite Series where everyone is on the same chassis, tire and engines. To seal the engine was a debated topic and decided after the name was created for the engines.

Back in the 80s, I drove Micro stocks for several owners at Home of Champions Speedway, a 1/10 mile paved oval ( the last of the urban bull rings ) in Pine brook N.J. We ran with flat head 5hp Briggs engines in two divisions, sportsman ( you could take the swirl baffle out of the pulsa jet carb and take the governor out ) or modified ( It's easier to tell you what we couldn't do) Bore was limited to +.100, stock stroke, we couldn't use the aluminum flywheel from a 3 1/2 hp that used a hub-mounted starter sprag because they flew apart at 7400 or so rpm. I got around this by using the flywheel from the later push mowers that had the Bendix cartridge next to the flywheel. as it had a continuous ring around the outer edge, making them much stronger. My team owner bought all of our engines from Cliff Loss at J.C. specialties Cliff and I were always looking for more speed. I would get an idea and ask his opinion. I was working construction at the time and just happened to cut through a recently demolished section and spotted 2 doors with those electromagnetic door locks and took them home to see if I could build a crank balancer. Except for the pinpoint spot on a locating cap contacting one magnet, the crankshaft was suspended in a magnetic field, eliminating almost 100% of the friction. I called Cliff and he asked if I could bring it to his shop. While I was setting up my balancer, Cliff was balancing a crank and bob weights on his high-dollar dynamic balancer. We then took that setup and put it on my balancer. Any engine builder will tell you that balancing has a point of diminishing return and that's what Cliff said this was what we had now. I put the crank between the magnets and turned them on. I turned the crank to give it a slight spin. It turned for a few seconds and rolled right to the heavy spot and stopped. Cliff said, " impressive, but you won't gain anything by trying to make it more perfect". All I said was "Let me try" I spun it again to find the heavy spot and used a die grinder on the counterweights. When I was happy Cliff said "good, let's go eat". On the way out I gave the crank a good spin. When we got back it was still slowly spinning. He put it in a motor and we dynoed it. At 6000 rpm it was quite down on power. At 6500, 7000, 7500, it was better but not great. We tried a more worked carburetor and manifold and it was happier but the engine didn't seem to keep up with the intake flow. Cliff said, "We seem to be in between carburetors". I said, "Can we rev it a little higher to make it want more air?" So on the next pulls we turned 8000 rpm and it was not done, 8500 and it still wanted more, but Cliff wouldn't go any higher so I called the team owner and he bought the motor. I put it in my car for the next race and it was lazy off the corners but turning 7800 going in. Next, I put 4 teeth in the sprocket and that was better but still needed more off but turned 8200. For my heat race, I took off the 12 tooth clutch and put on an 11, and added 4 more teeth to the sprocket. That woke it up. We went from starting 7th to 3rd in an 8 lap heat. I hit the recall on the tach and almost choked when I saw 9350 rpm. That engine was freshened up 1 time in 3 seasons and we always ran it that hard.

They are a great package, got to sample one the other week at Canberra Kart Track Australia on a practice day. They have a nice smooth power delivery all the way to you start limiter bashing. The chassis does handle well and some looseness it the fast way to set them up. The one I drove was driven by 40+ people that day, with no set up changes made during the day. Drivers from normal people to Professional racers, I was happy to only be 1.2 seconds off the fastest driver (I only did 7 laps) who is a pro driver (he raced at the Bathurst 1000 last year) and I'm over 20kg (44lbs) heavier and over 30 years older then him. As a person who has driven circle track cars. I can tell you what you were saying about the G forces is no joke. in a circle track car even strapped in very tightly with a five point harness. it still feels like it's ripping you apart. about the only difference is on a road course is that the sensation is happening both ways. where as with a circle track the forces or mostly pulling you to the right. one thing for sure it's somewhat difficult to describe the sensation. where other people might really get the full idea what it's like.

Doing a competitive race series would be awesome showing how to get into it and all. I think so much people would want to get into it but just don’t know how to get started.

as far as I know you turn better if you lean out of the turn, because it have a fixed axel, so if you turn right and lean to the left you put less weight on the back right tire and is easier to turn. That's also why the frame twist when you turn. I learned it the first time I was in a track go kart but I am not an expert and have only done it twice, so not 100% sure. great video as always.

The 225RS, like you mentioned in the video, makes 15 hp and revs to 6500 RPM. Meanwhile, those air-cooled 2-strokes, KA100s, make 22 hp and have no rev limiter, though people usually rev them to around 16k. The watercooled single-speed karts, X30s, make 30 hp and rev to 16k RPM. It's pretty incredible what those 2-stroke karts can do

if im not mistaken, i think you can adjust the castor on the kart by rotating the top spindle mount, which will adjust the amount of frame flex and add/subtract rear wheel grip from doing so. so if you have less castor, the frame will flex less, meaning more weight stays on the inside rear tire giving more grip, or maybe less? i have never driven one, let alone adjusted one, but its something to play around with on it.
