I love this scene - one of my favs. That quote is so powerful, only Anthony Hopkins could pull off a scene like that. I actually shrieked when Thor called Oden an old man and a fool. 3:13 I love that moment of hesitation from Odin as if he's considering whether or not he should go through with his decision. It's ambiguous at the time the film came out, but after Ragnarok, I like to interpret it as Odin remebering what Hela became when her ambition was left unchecked and thus Odin decides to go through with exiling Thor in hopes he'll learn humility and the value of life rather than follow in his sister's footsteps.

    • @jackhutton5078
      @jackhutton5078 7 месяцев назад +56

      I love that when you watch ragnarok you get this little call back and it makes it clear that in this moment Odin fears Thor will become another Hela
      I feel that his moments hesitation isn’t because he is considering Hela and realising what he needs to do.
      I think he’d made up his mind the moment thor started mouthing off.
      No, I think that hesitation is him thinking and trying to figure out where he went wrong.
      I also think it’s why he wanted to kill Loki in Dark World and had to be talked down by frigga.
      He blames himself for his children’s failings and feels that he has to punish them as harshly as possible because to him, if he doesn’t, he’s failing them again. He clearly loves all of his children but he knows he can’t let them get away with this shit, so over does it on the punishment so it doesn’t look like he’s showing favouritism.
      By the time it got to Loki he’s just realised he doesn’t know what he’s doing wrong or how to change.
      The sad thing is, from everything we see he is as a decent parent.
      Not perfect, but there are worse parents out there.
      At the end of the day, he is not responsible for his children’s choices, they are.
      And at the end of the day, all three of his children were assholes at some point. And two of them got better.

      The difference between the three is arrogance, narcisism and tyranny.

    • @jackhutton5078
      @jackhutton5078 5 месяцев назад +21

      @@ptboxingagenda4536the way I see it is that Hela probably started off like Thor.
      Remember, Thor was all for war, he went to Jotunheim LOOKING for a fight, seeking out war, revelling in bloodlust just like Hela did.
      Loki wasn’t a narcissist at this point, he wanted approval, he killed is biological dad to try and impress Odin, they both were looking for war and conflict here but Thor wanted people to fear him like they feared Odin, and Loki wanted Odin to see him as worthy and figured that since he always favored Thor, that was the way to go.
      The issue with all three of his children that I can tell is they all wanted to emulate their old man, but took his WORST qualities to emulate.
      Hela wanted to emulate his bloodlust and violent nature.
      Thor wanted to emulate the fear he inspired.
      And Loki wanted to emulate his ruthlessness and cunning.
      And all fell short.
      The old god was more powerful than them all right to the end.
      There’s a reason Thanos didn’t do shit until after Odin kicked the bucket.
      Fun fact: Odin’s old for a reason.

      @@justlivinglife5609 I like that revisionist history that Waititi fans have to to pull off, pretending like Thor 1 wasn't the first successful MCU solo film outside of IM movies and wasn't integral to The Avengers. If anything, Cap before TWS was the character people didn't have care for. With Ragnajoke and Dumb and Thunder, Thor didn't receive any personality. He was turned into every boring goofball stock MCU character, who forgot everything he learned, and started to talk like he's on SNL That's not ''personality''; that's character assassination. There was nothing serious or emotion about Waititi's piss-poor comedies; they were emotionless, shallow cacophonies of bad humor and nonsense. Also, Dumb and Thunder is now on its way to becoming a modern day equivalent of Batman and Robin. So clearly making Thor into a comedian didn't pay off; it made everything worse and there is no going back.

      Thor is a god, who made the human mistake of taking the wrong step when he was this close to victory, but not there yet.
      Loki spend all of his life hearing about monsters called frost giants, trying to prove himself over his brother whose shadow he had been living under and his father always favoured, but couldn't understand why. Then he found out that he is one of those monsters, and in his father's eyes he was a tool for peace, that he could never accomplish the one simple thing he had always and with any right wanted: to be Thor's equal.

    I just love the fact these two juggernauts respect the rules of war. The moment Odin comes in Laufey approaches him immediately to talk diplomacy and rules of war and Laufey doesn’t attack Odin until he accepts his declaration of war. Laufey almost seems worried about Odin saying he looks stressed, but basically tells Odin that even if Laufey didn’t want to go to war he basically has too because Thors actions was an act of war.
    Let’s be real. What Thor did was basically a terrorist attack. You have to go to war after that.

    • @user-lp2we9cb5c

      In the original interpretation of the script, however, Laufey here is portrayed as more pragmatic. He only attempts to attack upon witnessing the aged and weary aspect of the Allfather during the confrontation, yet Odin still manages to fend him off.

      From this perspective, the scene can be understood as follows: the two kings silently assess each other during their conversation and standoff, weighing the costs and opportunities of war. Once determined, they strike like hunters. The narration describes Laufey's mental activity, but Odin is equally vigilant, with actions that are quicker and more powerful.

      @@antonellaromero_upc1564 I know it because: A) It says on Wikipedia page for Thor Ragnarok that Hela was chosen at random for the third movie and the screenwriter wasn't even sure if it to make her Odin's daughter. B) One of the screenwriters on the first movie was J. Michael Straczynski, who was also a writer on Thor's comics. So he definitely wouldn't allude to Hela being Odin's daughter because he himself wrote stories with Thor where she's accurately depicted as Loki's daughter.

    • @ToonGrin
      @ToonGrin 2 года назад +62

      @@antonellaromero_upc1564 I like to think thats good writing takes existing content then enhances it upon repeated viewing. Like how in Star Wars you can tell they didn't intend Vader to be Luke's father. In fact last I recall it was intended to be a single film. However, the little flesing out with Vader in Ep 5 worked kinda nicely. Vader requests to turn Luke rather than execute him is played with subtlety. Since till that Point Vader was basically a thug who killed folks be it rebels or imperial if they failed enough, he flat out chokes an officer in a meeting until Tarkin stops him. So really Vader has no qualms taking lives. He has no reason to spare Luke unless he knew Luke is his son and that part of Anakin still wants the chance to be with his family. That sort of stuff is always fun with writing where you can expand upon something.
      So the idea here is Odin was worried Thor would be like him, a warmonger, but then Ragnarok comes out and it adds that Odin is worried Thor would be like him, a warmonger, or worse like Hela and be this chaotic force of death. It enhances Odin's character beyond the plot setter for Thor to prove his worthiness to now be a concerned father who already failed his daughter and is frightened he is repeating that failure with his son.
      Just a nice piece of writing. :)

      I found Thor to be fairly entertaining as a whole, but this scene shows how much of a Master Anthony Hopkins can be. He completely controls this scene.
      Thor thinks his father a coward and an old man, and Odin responds with such force that he reduces a previously arrogant Thor to a whimpering ten year-old. Just look at the mix of fear and dIsbelief on Thor’s face when Odin comes down on him.
      I could only imagine the silence and awe on-set the day that Hopkins filmed this scene. The true greats tend to get that reaction from their audience, whether it be in-person or on-screen.

    3:10 I find this part of the teardown to be quite striking. Not only are the lines just before intense as hell and beautifully delivered, but the size difference between the two really makes Odin feel like this towering figure, this imposing authority. He is the All-Father.
    Anthony Hopkins (Odin) is 5'9. Chris Hemsworth (Thor) is 6'4. Between them lies seven inches of height and yet this image, with Odin standing on the steps of the Bifrost to stare down at his son, makes him look a mile higher than he is. That's brillaint framing. Thor is but a child to his father's wrath and godly strength in this scene. All his might and confidence evaporates when he is faced with someone truly powerful, someone he simply can't defeat, instead of someone for him to fight.
