I have been teasing this series for a very long time...ever since I did the Sega Arcade Racing Retrospective last year...and that's because it took a VERY LONG TIME to make...a thirty episode retrospective on every Sega Model 1, Sega Model 2 and Sega Model 3 arcade game ever made that isnt a racing title! Because Sega is the undisputed (in my opinion) king of retro gaming in arcades whether it be 2D or 3D!
Just don't expect Daytona USA, Scud Race or Sega Rally...as that already happened back in 2023! Check the playlists!
But the Sega Model series of arcade boards are filled to the bring with some of the best Sega games of all time...as well as some Sega Hidden Gems!
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kurangui, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane,

Up next: Zero Gunner. Its a Vertical shmup from Psiyko who also made Pilot Kids on the Sega Model 2 arcade board as well! Its definitely a lesser known shmup but its also an arcade hidden gem and a shmup hidden gem all rolled up into one! Plus it got a sequel on the Sega Dreamcast and is def a Dreamcast hidden gem too!
and the best part is you can use the "Model 2 Emulator" to play the arcade original if you don't have an original arcade PCB!

I absolutely love Zero Gunner 2 on Naomi/Dreamcast, one of my favourite shmups of all time. This one's a little janky, but still fun. It walked so ZG2 could... fly?
Haha so it could fly
What a gem!
Never played the arcade version though. This really makes me want to spend a day playing Dreamcast shoot em ups.
A day we’ll spend IMO
@@VideoGameEsoterica Absolutely agreed!
When I think of Psikyo, I think of their beloved "monkey" difficulty level option. When I think of monkeys, I think of MiSTer Discord's General channel and its beloved monkey GIFs. And when I think of MiSTer Discord's monkey GIFs, I think of Psikyo shmups. It's the circle of shmup life.
I don’t even remember how the monkey thing got started but it’s not as much a part of MiSTer as anything else
🐒
I love shmups. I mostly play that and 2D fighters. I haven't played this but Zero Gunner 2 on DC is great; I love the lock-on mechanic.
Def give this one a shot
Zero Gunner 2 is such an amazing game. I've never actually gotten around to playing this one, as I've heard it's similar but not as good.
Not as good but still worth playing!
I think this game might have inspired Under Defeat, I could be wrong. Yes, UD and its sequel are on the Dreamcast. I don’t know why City Connection didn’t pick up the first one like they did with its successor.
Def seems to be a bit of shared DNA
I've played Zero Gunner 2 quite a bit but never got the chance to try the first. The action seems faster paced than in the sequel.
It seems like everyone has played 2 but not many have played the original
@@VideoGameEsoterica Well Zero Gunner 2 wasn't an arcade exclusive. It's even on Steam now, though the port's quality seems questionable.
Awesome game. Do you know which version of the Model 2 this was released on?
2B from memory
@@VideoGameEsoterica Ah, maybe a stretch for the DE-10?
I'd be happy if de-10 nano could do any 24khz core.
Maybe one day. But I want to see at least one 3D arcade board on MiSTer
would it be so cool on saturn
Despite all the praises from hardcore Cave fans, I never got the hang of bullet hell shmups, there's just too many systems you have to learn. But Psikyo is more accessible and easier to 1cc. When I'm in a retro mood, I have a more enjoyable time playing Strikers than Dodonpachi
Just play bullet hells for the challenge. I ignore all the scoring systems
"We've saved the world, we're done. Bye bye!"
Sounds like finishing a day in a 9-5 job. 😅
🤣 it def sounds like something
👀👀👀👀👀
Haha someone seems excited
@@VideoGameEsoterica Hahahaha I’ve had a lot of coffee this AM 😵💫😵💫😳🤣🥴
But I’m always excited about Model 2 games! 🤩🤩🤩🤣
@SaturnSteve haha I start the day with two cups
@@VideoGameEsoterica this is the way 🤷🏻♂️ 😅 🥴
Awesome series!
I found Out about this Game after playing Zero Gunner 2. I still have to Play this. Any Suggestion what's best one how to play? I don't have a MiSTer and I think I won't manage to find a cabinet (Not talking about needed space) Here in Germany.
It’s funny I think everyone played 2 first. Model 2 emulator is what I used here
I was a big time arcade rat during this time period but I only heard of this game in magazines and online, I have a lot of fun memories playing Zero Gunner 2 and apparently ZG1's spiritual successor Under Defeat
It’s super interesting to me how few people have played this one
This game led to one of the biggest improvements ever in a sequel. It's up there with Street Fighter.
It is a large difference
Its really odd that this game has never been ported anywhere while the sequel got multiple ports.
Yeah not often that that’s the case
Nice shump even with those darker colors, personally I like Zero Gunner 2 on Dreamcast much more.
The sequel is the better game for sure
5:44 MAX POWER... DEAD!!
Chasing those powerups again 😊
Haha always gets me
First comment🎉🎉🎉 never played this one
Def play it. Well worth your time!
Awesome video! Ashamed to say it, but not even I remembered Zero Gunner! 😭
I definitely see your point about the stylistic differences from other Model 2 projects, but I have to admit that the vibrant, oversaturated colors are so iconic to me that I miss it. That being said, it’s definitely no deal breaker as I love shooters - especially with lock on mechanics - *AND* most importantly, the strafe mechanic (!!!) is absolutely KILLER!
Thanks for a great video on a sleeper Model 2 banger! 💪🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💪🏻🙏🙏
Def a game where everyone remembers the sequel but not the original
@@VideoGameEsoterica Indeed!!! 🔥🔥
