This game gets a lot of flack, but it holds a special place in my heart since it's the first Gradius I got into. I think what hooked me in the most was the music! Especially that second stage! Then I played all the past games and Gradius 5, and I haven't looked back too much at this game since. It's still fun to play occasionally though.
Photon torpedo was the ultimate boss killer, sure you can’t really kill anything above or behind you but anything in front of you would get obliterated
First time I had played this was when I bought this double pack on PS2 that it came on with 3. Boy I tell you what, it felt different, had always heard it wasn't a good game, but I'll be damned if it didn't grow on me extremely quickly.
Yeah it's a damned fine game, the black sheep of the series, but not a bad black sheep. Soundtrack is pretty low key compared to the other games in the series, but it doesn't have to be over the top either to be a great soundtrack. This game was my first Ebay purchase back in October of 2004 (the reason I signed up for an account there, and years later, still my go to place for imports), could never find this game in my local retro game shops, or game shops here period. I didn't spot one in the retro shop here till a full 11 years after I bought the game, in 2015. All I could do was laugh, it was sitting right there, but I no longer needed a copy. The owner of the shop remembered years before that I was looking for it, and asked if I still wanted to buy it. Told the poor guy, he was 11 years too late, Ebay had beaten him to the punch.
Those pendulums in the final stage take the urine more than the lasers in Gradius 3's final stage. I wanted to like this entry into the series so much but to me the music whilst having a couple of good tunes really let it down compared to all the other versions. Great play through as always pal.
Agreed, it definitely has the weakest music in the entire series (well the gameboy adcance game has a pretty poor ost too). It's too bad because there is a lot I really like about it, the rank system is a lot more fair than part iii for instance.
@@unforgivn81 They aren't played by an AI but they use Tools like savestates and slowdown to get a perfect run without the hassle of actually practising enough to beat the game legit. Que jogão, o Gradius, todos eles, desde o Nintendo até o Playstation IV são indiscutivelmente os melhores jogos de nave elaborado pela Konami! São jogos difíceis, mas dão muita emoção tanto para quem joga para quem assiste!
These games are tough. And those checkpoints, aarrgggh just start me at the beginning of the level. I can't do jack without power ups in the middle of chaos.
On Steam games, you can get something called Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection. It has 5 or 6 Konami games, three are Gradius related. Gradius (Nemesis) and Salamander (Life Force) and Gradius 2 (Vulcan Venture), it also has 1981's Scramble. Gradius 0, haha. :P
Still watching your videos in order to learn how to manage Gradius games. May I ask why did you pick this shot type ? Also, your new recording setup with the cab is really nice !
I picked it because it's the only one of them with a good laser. Most of the lasers are worse than your basic shot in this game, no joke. Also the missiles can hit things above and below you which does come in handy, especially if you die and have to recover.
"Wow, this looks like Gradius II!" I mean, it's supposed to be a "Gradius II 2" the subtitle "Fukkatsu" means "resurrection." In-canon, this happens after 3 however before Advance, which is supposed to be a more tragic take on "parts of me will be scattered" speech. As one of those pieces infects a planet so badly that you aren't able to save it at the end of Advance. There's a point of reality in "you will never completely destroy me." Since even to after 2 millenea has passed to Gradius V, you're still fighting off Dark Force. Even more omminously Venom is still "alive" in a sense, still vowing revenge. An eternal hell he's put himself in by weaponizing the Bacterians' affliction to the Dark Force. "You will never escape the shadow of my fear."
Can't believe I missed this one on PS2. Technically Gradius V is superior but IV has more variety and style. That's my thought after watching this video.
Gradius V felt boring and more of a chore to get through. Sure the guys at Treasure, former Konami employees, made the game, but I never found Treasure's shmups to be all that great, their platformers and run and guns were fine though. Gradius Gaiden is the pinnacle of the series, and though this game visually doesn't hold up to Gaiden, it doesn't really have to, because it's challenge far surpasses Gaiden.
no amount of cheating will ever help you beat this game, :) the game is literally made for perfectionists, there is no room for mistakes, i admit that i used cheats " that only got me so far " because as i said no cheat will help you, they only get you past enemies, but they don't nerf the stage design, i cheated and i still died A LOT.
In my personal experience, i found Gradius III more difficult, i put it the game in Easyest and its was very difficult, Gradius IV and V were in Normal and i Completed the Two games without more problems...
Boy oh boy I don't know where you get your info from, the games canon, and I have never heard of any other release for this game other than the PS2 or PSP. No way was the N64 going to run this 100% like the arcade, and Konami's output on the Dreamcast was never big, or for any Sega console in general. Konami put their biggest output on Nintendo and Sony machines. The PS2 version is 100% exact to the arcade game, the PSP version suffers from some slowdown.
I'm sorry but I can't take this game's 3d animations seriously. I know I know, it's an old game, they didn't have the technology, yadda yadda yadda, but seriously, Gradius 3 looks better in my opinion.
Konami were trying something new with this game, the tech wasn't going to be mind blowing, not for a shmup of the caliber of Gradius. You could say this was Konami getting their feet wet with shmups using 3D technology, though I believe they mostly used their 3D tech for racing games, and a fighting game here and there. I don't think there was another 2D-ish 3D shmup Konami made, outside of the fully 3D Solar Assault, another game in the Gradius series.
I always loved that konami intro, literally brings every memory, i can't even stop replaying that part :D
