      Man I deal with pretty horrific chronic pain too (they say it’s one of if not the most painful condition one can be diagnosed with) it’s called complex regional pain syndrome or CRPS.
      Trust me I’m not here bragging about that or did I want to mention it at all lol I just wanted to say that I also tend to use videos like Joes to try and help distract my brain and train of thought to get whatever I can in my head to fire whatever other neural signals that are working towards any receptor other then the infinitely traveling and constantly overused destination of pain.
      Nostalgia is a hell of a drug to be honest. Most new videos I haven’t seen that contain anything nostalgic usually does the best for me so whatever dopamine that releases or whatever receptors that helps light up definitely causes enough to take the mind off the pain and you deal with this chronic crap so you can attest that even a tiny break from that constant hell can feel like a 2 week tropical vacation sometimes. It’s hard to explain to most but people who deal with it know what I mean most of the time at least and yes to the rest who may come across this and be confused then I’ll tell you that something as simple as a short video meant for small bursts of entertainment can be a big help if your in the right mind set. Nothing helps take 100% of it away but when you deal with severe pain 24/7 then dialing that 100% back to say 50% for a hour or so truly does help more then i can explain

    The point in Alpha Mission letters (mostly) is to collect same letters because they are different upgrade "paths" to ship attacks (for example L stands for lasers and M is for Misles) and if you collect different letter, your ship attacks reset to different path, but with least amount of power. In Alpha Mission 2 there is also collectible "words" - these are work in same way - collect 3 same words and you will be given stored power up, that when you use it, you will temporaly transform your ship in more powerful form (that can also withstand several hits before revertind to regular ship). You can keep several of these power ups in storage if you complete collecting same words, but collecting different word before finishing collecting current set is reverts progress to different path. Hope i explained these understandble enouth

      ive got the psp eboot port, and while ive played it a bit, its not enough to really get its mechanics.. does picking up the letters act like the number weapons pick ups in Aleste (Power Strike) in that you get a couple seconds of invincibility ? if not that seems like a huge amount of work paying attention to things other than the enemies and their fire for a shooter..

    • @MagmaMKII
      @MagmaMKII Месяц назад +1

      @@arcadianlhadattshirotsughW33Z No, in Alpha Mission you're basically collecting parts for a weapon. When you have all parts you can activate it, thus equipping your ship with a temporary but powerful weapon. These are pretty much required to defeat the bosses if you don't want to spend a long time fighting them, some can quickly make short work of the bosses.

      basically you collect 3 S to upgrade your speed by 1, and the same for Missles (M) and lazers (L). Each of these three can upgrade 2 times. once you got the 2nd upgrade, you collect the relevant K letters to lock in the upgrades. The E is for the energy meter used by the fully collected ship attachments when you equip them (which you need 3 pieces to make a completed attachment, you can only assemble one at a time, but fully assembled attachments are banked so you can use them whenever you need, though they are one time use only, and use up Energy). the other letters do different things, the F opens boxes/explodes them, the R is for a reverse/go back in the stage, W is for Warping/going ahead in the stage (which sucks), P is for an extra ship/life, and avoid C, as it Cancels/removes any ship attachment you are using, so avoid that at all costs. etc. be careful though as when you see reversed letters, you should avoid them, as reversed letters impact you negatively, i.e reverse S slows you down, then you have to collect 3 more normal S to upgrade, reversed E robs you of Energy, etc. I loved Alpha Mission, and play it regularly, but only really get to the 4th area as it is tough. oh and building the shield attachment and using it is a must!

    One thing I have to say about SNK.
    I used to live in Japan for about 6 years teaching English, specifically Osaka.
    Every student knew about Konami, Capcom, etc...
    The second I mentioned SNK, all I got was a blank 'eh?' look.
    It's a pity such an iconic Japanese company had zero recognition within its home country, not to mention its home CITY.

    • @MattiaSangiorgi
      @MattiaSangiorgi Месяц назад +3

      Well, SNK was huge in the mid-to-late 90s and had very sharp decline in the early 00s. It was also never as big in Japan as the other companies you mentioned, so depending on when you're experiencing is set, it could be very reasonable for younger people who aren't hardcore gamers to not know about them.

    • @ondrejsedlak4935
      @ondrejsedlak4935 Месяц назад +2

      @@MattiaSangiorgi I do understand that.
      However seeing as all my students were from Osaka, you'd think they would know this. Especially the over 40s or 50s.
      And yeah, some of my students were gamers from that era yet not a single one knew about SNK.
      Other factor could be that Konami and Capcom have a huge presence in the games parlour and Pachinko industry over there, whereas SNK had none.

I would double down on my love for SNK in 1990 when picking up a Neo•Geo Gold System + Baseball Stars and Tiop Player's Golf. After reading about their upcoming system in both EGM and VG&CE mags, I started saving up my money. What a time to be a gamer! Playing arcade games on a home TV was really amazing. This video helped me solve a 40 plus year mystery for me regarding an arcade game they had in my local swimming baths in the late 70s or early 80s. My main recollection was that there was a comet which fired a lot of bullets at you once shot. I have trawled through a ton of MAME ROMs trying to find it but couldn't. As soon as your video started and Ozma Wars came on I knew straight away it was the game. I do have the ROM and started it up to make sure and it is black and white. Then I remembered the arcade one had coloured striped on the glass.. Thanks for this, really grateful.

    Hello Joe, Steven Spielberg here. Let's cut right to the chase. Your short movie 'A Ride in the Truck' is the best piece of cinema in existence. Considering no one will ever top this piece of art, I'd like for you to have all my Oscars and any future ones I might win. Congraturations Joe. You've earned it!

    SNK has always been one of those companies that I've always enjoyed, especially how weirdly deep the lore goes. Like how it was mentioned Athena is in KoF (with it being the one from Psycho Solider, who is a reincarnation of the one from Althena) but also the main characters of Ikari Warriors are as well. As far as I'm aware of this mismash of weirdness is canon to each other and I adore it.

  •  Месяц назад +1

    Since you mentioned Athena being the same character that later appeared in all KoF games, it's worth pointing out that the main characters from Ikari Warriors are Ralf and Clark from KoF's Ikari team, and who would later also appear in Metal Slug 6 onwards. Anyways, great episode!

    Man I forgot how many great games SNK had both for the arcade and home systems(outside of neogeo). Tank and Ikari warriors were great and at the time I even liked the nes versions. Athena for nes I liked, and of course Crystalis is probably my favorite action rpg on the nes(zelda 1 does not have exp points!).

    Alpha Mission is a great game. The letters represents power ups.
    S = speed
    M = missile
    L = Laser
    Etc
    And most importantly: E = energy.
    With that, you can choose a great variety of ships!
    It’s awesome.

    Alpha Denshi also contributed to the development of the Neo Geo hardware, the 68000 based Alpha Denshi games used an earlier more primitive version of the "strip" graphics hardware that the Neo Geo would eventually use. Basically everything on screen is made up of strips that are 16 pixels wide and up to 512 pixels tall (on the Neo Geo) There are no tiles or pallets just strips and a block of color registers that the pixel values reference like how color on a VGA card works (in the case of the Neo Geo 4096 16-bit color registers and 12 bits per pixel)
