This is one of those games that I first got to experience because it started working in Supermodel. Never saw it in the wild and had never heard about it. But it's an incredible game and really feels like Streets of Rage 3D.
Hey thank you so much for showcasing this game! I did not know about it and I love me some beat em ups. I got this game up and going on the Steam Deck and I plays wonderfully!
I think a key point about this game is its length. Very unusual for an arcade game, particularly of that late era, and especially for Model 3, where most games can be beat in < 20 minutes. There is a very large number of stages with branching paths and, as mentioned in the video, the combat system is actually very deep. A hidden masterpiece and a must-play for sure. Go straight to Final Edition for the complete experience.
'FUELING UP', never 'GASING UP', sorry I'm in the industry. Love the channel and all your MiSTer content, always, thanks for all that you do for our retro gaming hobby!!
Shame it didn’t get released for the Dreamcast as I would have brought this for my DC console back then as with all my Sega consoles growing up I love beat em up games starting my Master System game with it were Double Dragon , Black Belt from there on to my Mega Drive game with were Golden Axe , Streets of Rage then my Sega Saturn game with it Guardian Heroes and yeah many great memories for sure this game would have been great for DC at home
Die Hard Arcade is my favorite beat 'em up ever, which is why I was quite disappointed by the sequel. One of its problems is that it feels like it offers less moves, as if the huge movelist of the original game was this time divided between the three characters, and also between the normal and berzerk mode (a mechanic I dislike; I prefer being able to do every move at each time). Also I'm not sure the anti-tank cannon is back... 😔
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yes, it's way too short. Also the best music tracks imho (especially the 24th on the Saturn CD-ROM) are heard during fights that happen when you miss a QTE, and those are very easy (and make the game even shorter).
This and Dynamite Deka (I think it's called Dynamite Cop or something like that in the West) are what I was hoping 3D beat em ups would use as a foundation. As damn good as Sifu is, I'd love to see this style come back as well.
I love Model 3 graphics. They seriously are timeless. Same with Naomi 3d graphics. Just the definition of timeless. They looked incredible back then and look amazing today. I really love a modern indie game replicating these kinds of graphics like how they replicate pixel art and ps1 graphics as I think model 3 type graphics are equally as timeless.
@@VideoGameEsoterica All of these aged insanely well! When technical limitations look so great to the point they can be an art style. You did something right. I want these boards to get the Super Retro GP treatment as MAN do they deserve it! It would be a dream come true to get a new game that looks like a model 2-3 and Naomi classic.
What would delight me would be somehow getting sega arcade card games to work, like wccf (I still have the cards) and the three kingdoms games. Maybe that's content for a video?
As for the Yakuza fight. Fun fact. The guy who made this game Toshihiro Nagoshi is actually the creator of the Yakuza games so there is naturally similarities in the fight engine
What I like most about Spikeout besides the combat system are all the characters. Some of the boss characters are memorable and have some personality too. Even Spike's son Junior hanging on his dad's back while he's pummeling fools is funny.
On the OG-X-Box version, if you managed to defeat a major boss enemy without getting hit you could select them from now on. I only ever managed it with one of the sub-bosses on the first stage, but they don't count as they aren't a real boss, just a tougher regular enemy. But yeah, good call Remington, we can add the player and boss characters from this to the imaginary "Fighters Megamix 2" in my head alongside the bosses from the Virtua Cop games, and a later DLC with the Crazy Taxi drivers "Lets make some crazy combos"
@@hybridvigga Yes I played that version also. You're right. It's *extremely* tough to unlock the bosses. Having to land a 4-hit combo without getting hit by them. I used Tenshin for most of 'em. I unlocked almost all of 'em except Kaiser (Shipyard endboss), Belial (Grim Reaper) and King (hulking street thug).
We need a Spikeout collection. I wouldn't be surprised if SEGA release this on PSN for Japan only, I know its in the latest Yakuza game. I say this because they shadow dropped VF3 tb out of nowhere for JP PSN, so who knows, yeah this is pretty much what Streets Of Rage in 3D would have been.
After it's inclusion in Infinite Wealth I'm desperate for either a standalone release or a Sega Arcade collection. There is such a small amount of games like this nowadays.
Pretty sure some of the moves in this game were re-used for various characters in the Yakuza franchise. Also not only is it playable in Like a Dragon 8, but you can launch up to a 4P multiplayer game from the title screen. Wish they could have done multiplayer for Daytona 2 in LaD Gaiden
I had some Spikeout game on the X-Box. The levels you're on look awfully familiar, it might have been this one. It had like 30 bonus characters, because if you could beat a boss or mid-boss without getting hit they were added to the character selection. Don't think that was in the arcade. I never managed to get a single one.
A Model 3 collection on console would be very nice. Day 1 for me. Sega, are you listening? Probably not. However, I no longer believe they're ignoring their legacy. My Gematria decoded that it is in fact a hoax ritual. It just seems they are. They could release something out of nowhere.
Is there a grappler character in this game?? Most of them only seems like the basic balanced combo characters...I finally manage to make demolition fist to work on steam deck(it was an bad rom) but now cant find for the life of me Slashout to download...all the ones I got are wrong roms 😢
Curious if you've ever played Spikeout: Battle Street, the Original Xbox exclusive sequel/follow up game? Haven't played it myself but curious to try it out
I've played both versions several times. Both fun games. Ironically, the arcade version is better than the Xbox version. The only thing good about the Xbox version is that you can play as all the boss characters once you've unlocked them.
@@VideoGameEsoterica Gamers gotta start making games the games they want to see, that's the only way we'll get more. It's featured as a game in the arcades in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth!
It’s fun Sega is giving people more of these games via Yakuza
@@VideoGameEsoterica It's such a gift from the gods, LaD Gaiden had Daytona 2.
Finally getting those model 3 games.
Sega is finally remembering its fans
they should separate it from that game and re release it as a standalone untouched on steam and modern consoles
I’d love a Model 3 collection
This is one of those games that I first got to experience because it started working in Supermodel. Never saw it in the wild and had never heard about it. But it's an incredible game and really feels like Streets of Rage 3D.
It basically is the unofficial Streets of Rage 3D
I remember trying to get the controller bindings to work with the emu, was worth it for this.
Def worth it :)
Hey thank you so much for showcasing this game! I did not know about it and I love me some beat em ups. I got this game up and going on the Steam Deck and I plays wonderfully!
Awesome! Enjoy it :)
I've crowned it the best beat em up. It is simply perfection.
For me that’ll always be Die Hard Arcade

Def had “getting ported to consoles” vibes due to the length
I had totally forgotten this existed!
Really should revisit it as I having been craving some beat em up goodness! :)
The time to revisit is now!
I do remember playing this arcade game, but it was the first version. This one is a new version. ^^
Yeah OG Spikeout vs Final Battle

Happy to do it :) but you can gas up. Just need greasy food lol
you really love spikeout! rightfully so
It’s a classic
I would have LOOVED for all these 3D beat em ups to come to the Dreamcast. I would have bought them all!
Same. One of my fav genres

The game length def made it seem like it was intended for a home port
I think Dynamite Cop is my favourite 3D beat em up, a slicker and even sillier sequel to Die Hard Arcade.
DHA will always be my number 1

The fighting engine was retooled into the first Yakuza.
This is also in Infinite wealth being super Meta
A full circle of Sega
