    Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2 and Shinobi 3 are all excellent looking games. Not many 'fx" for the sake of doing "fx" - just great color use and art, sprite size and detail, multi-layered backgrounds and nice animation throughout. Plus, they all perform great, with hardly any slowdown. All of Treasure's stuff is great too, of course. As far as Konami games, IMO Rocket Knight Adventures takes the cake, thanks to the huge sprites and great color use (the areas where I found Contra: HC and Bloodlines to be a bit lacking). Some of the later Western developed games really pushed the "fx" side of things - stuff from Zyrinx, Clockwork Tortoise, Traveller's Tales, Shiny, Factor 5, Appaloosa, etc. Panorama Cotton proved that you could simulate respectable super scaler effects on the Genesis. Skitchin' is probably even more impressive, though not as attractive. Modern days devs are doing amazing stuff with the ole Genny, though of course, they get the benefit of dev tools that are light years ahead of that they had 30 years ago.

      While the first part of your post is correct (size). The second part...not so much. The Sega Genesis not only has the ability to scale and rotate sprites, but there are plenty of games that were released commercially with these effects. Developers were able to achieve scaling and rotation through software. Here are some games that featured these effects...
      1. Red Zone: Features polygonal graphics, scaling, and rotation as normal gameplay, and even includes an FMV.
      2. Road Rash 1-3: The track itself, riders, people on the roads, and everything else was done with software scaling.
      3. Thunder Force IV: Features fully rotating shots that come from the background to the foreground in a level. There are enemies that move from the background to the foreground as well.
      3. Kawasaki Superbike Challenge: This is a fully polygonal based racing game that runs very smoothly for the hardware. Every track has riders that scale from front to back and back to front. The track setpieces are almost entirely made of polygons that scale for the player.
      4. Gunstar Heroes: The game has all kinds of sprite manipulation going on generally during boss fights.
      5. Panorama Cotton: This game is an absolute feast for the eyes. It successfully emulates what a Super Scaler should look like on a Mega Drive (unlike Space Harrier 2). Albeit in a much smaller way. Unfortunately, it was never released outside of Japan.
      Addendum - There are many more examples, but this is getting a bit long, my friend. I encourage you to take a look at the small list of games I have shared as they truly are incredible.

      Castlevania Bloodlines is just downright ugly. From ugly, muddy backgrounds to cheesy looking characters. The special effects that everyone gushes about are not that impressive either. Play Sparkster on SNES if you want to see that water reflection trick done convincingly. Play Super Metroid if you want to see how a tilting tower looks and more importantly plays like. The games action isn't even as fast paced as Super Castlevania 4. Try playing through the more difficult second quest where their are way more enemies out their attacking. I am so sick of these ignorant Sega fanboys that think that Genesis games play faster. A games speed has little to do with hardware and there is no "blast processing" either.

    • @drugon
      @drugon 2 месяца назад +1

      Awesome, thanks for the list. It is much appreciated and I will reference it when looking for games to consider making a video on.
      I would have ranked streets of rage 2 a bit higher though.
      SOR2 is my favorite 16 bit game ever, so I am a bit biased on that one haha.
      Thanks again.

    Im sorry but unless you were in Japan Strider did not come out in March of 1990. I know because I remember how hard it was to wait until November to get it

      I think it might be. The name difference might be depending on the region it was released.

    Saying Bloodlines has some of the best graphics on the system.. is a complete insult to the system. The colors and art are really below average. I have no idea how people think that's good graphics. There's soo much graphic disappointed in Bloodlines.. especially for the year it came out. It straight up has NES color gradients going on.. and a complete LACK of detail. The animation is seriously amateurish. Yeah the music is good, but that has nothing to do with the graphics.

      Thanks for the input, and I am impressed how passionate you are about your graphics. I like your attitude!
      I was going to do a whole episode on the game with the best graphics ever, that of course would be Jewel Master!
      What games would be on your list?

    • @greensun1334
      @greensun1334 3 месяца назад +6

      Indeed, the look of Bloodlines was a disappointment, even more for a game from '94. Altrough it had some rarely used graphical effects like highlight/shadow mode, the colors and animations were quite basic. It's the least appealing 16bit Castlevania imo.

    • @inceptional
      @inceptional 3 месяца назад +3

      @@greensun1334 I agree. But most people who proclaim it one of the most impressive 16-bit games are apparently focussed on a couple of largely pretty standard graphical tricks and little else from what I can tell, most of which actually look a little fugly when considered purely on the end result and artistic merit imo. I mean, even if someone considers it technically accomplished, which it actually is in many ways for a Genesis game, it's really not an aesthetically pleasing game as far as I'm concerned. And as far as I'm concerned, that's actually the most important part to get right. still, a whole lot of Genesis fans seem to consider it a stunner. While personally, I'd say Castlevania IV and Rondo of Blood are far prettier, especially Rondo of Blood that really had the benefit of extra time and experience as evidenced in the clear evolution of the quality of largely the pixel artwork there, even with it being on a console that lacks many of the typical graphical capabilities of the likes of Genesis and especially SNES. It's doing a whole lot with one background layer and largely just some row/line scrolling and sprites faking the rest of background details and such. And that kinda makes it the most impressive graphically to me too for that very reason--because it takes full advantage of the stock console's standard features better than both the Genesis and SNES games push those systems in my opinion. Still, Bloodlines is certainly not a bad game, actually very good, but just not very pretty to my eyes. And rather actually kinda fugly to be honest.

      @RetroPoweredGaming I like the graphics/ colors in bloodlines over the look of castlevania 4, the graphics are good in 4 but the world just looks too early super Nintendo imo. Bloodlines had more pop, terrible bosses compared to other castlevania games, like that gear boss. No ranger-x?

    • @TurboXray
      @TurboXray 3 месяца назад +2

      @@RetroPoweredGaming Jewel Master? You're a fan of that early 16bit era look? Jewel Master has that charming early 16bit era look. I dunno.. there's a difference between "best graphic" and "I like this aesthetic/look".
      On my list? Off the top of my head... Gaiares. To this day, it looks like a SNES game in the color department, and the art for the bosses is amazing (as well as the animations). I'd have to really sit down and think about "best graphics" for the Genesis.
