Damn! That house is so beautiful! I can understand why they bought it and want to keep it. But $12,000 on an area rug and almost $4,000 on curtains? That makes no sense to me.
@@sneakerfreak2002 there's a certain point on the quality scale where the difference becomes negligible though. A 2k rug is likely very similar in quality. The big difference is between the 200$ and the 2k rug, not the 2k and the 12k. And regardless, quality is irrelevant when you can't afford it lol
Also, it’s not even practical items. I could understand spending all of that money if the whole house was getting rugs or if the curtains served as some kind of draft protection/weather proofing; or even if the value of either increased over time. @@--M--1111I get what you're saying, but this also comes across as you saying "the "smart" thing is to come from a large, financially stable and loving family". Maybe judge your acquaintances less for having "personal issues" and "not getting along with thier parents." You might not know the whole story. Most people dont' confide the darkest, most painful parts of their past to "acquaintances." But you need to know, parents who can co-sign loans or pay for weddings might NOT be parents it is safe or smart to live with. And you will very rarely know from the outside looking in who the real monsters are. Money isn't the only virtue. Plenty of people have parents who have money, and are incredibly abusive. And society loooves to pressure people to put up with abuse from parents. People love to tell you that you need to learn to just "get along" with them, as if everyone who has family problems is just a spoilt teenager who doesn't appreciate a loving family. People love to say things like "but they're family!" or "they meant well" or "but they're your parents, of course they love you." Not everyone can live with family. It's not stupid to choose your mental health over a financial gian.
I Love Gail, she does not keep quiet about the truth of the matter. I Love this couple, they are working together to resolve a problem. They care about their home and their life in general.

Depends on the cats. My cat(s) has a cat flap and doesn't scratch anything in our house although it has no scratch post. Some cats don't feel the urge to scratch in the house.

They are such a lovely couple...i really hope they are in a much better financial place...and have children by now!! They seem as they would be amazing parents!!
When looking for a trademan I ask for insurance and license. If they mess it up or blow my home up, they are covered. I don't just want some guy with a truck and a phone. It is worth the higher price. Also, GET IT IN WRITING BEFORE they start. The last time I fell for that, $25 in the door....$75 out the door. There is no fighting that. I had to pay him cash so he got no bank information on a check or card. My first mistake on this was not checking rhe reviews TELLING me they were crooks. I ended up reporting then to the BBB.
They spent $12k on rugs but are piffling around on getting a $700 railing for insurance purposes? Yeah ok. I know this is in Canada but when we brought our house in the states, we couldn't close until the seller put in a railing on the basement steps. He complained like a baby about it too but it wouldn't pass inspection without it.
@@solidstate9451 I agree! My partner and I plan on having a child in the future, however we both have agreed that will be after we have eradicated our non-mortgage debt. It is important to us for me to stay home at least the first year with the baby so eliminating our debt, fully funding our emergency fund, and reducing our overall expenses is essential to being able to live comfortably on the loss of income that will result from me not working.

Im surprised the insurance company didn't require them to put the railing in when they bought it, it was one of the first things i had to do when i bought the house.
I'm not sure about Canada, but in America if you do a convention loan, the seller doesn't need to update the house. If it's a federal loan, they do. They've just been waiting to get insured until the house is up to date. I'm not big on insurance, but that's terrifying. If this house burned to the ground during this, they would be out so much. Homeowners is truly one of the most important insurances.
Fixing the garden first?! When they need a stair railing to get full house insurance? That's a waste of money by not prioritizing correctly, and I'm astonished at Gail for that one. Their first project should have been adding that stair rail--especially when the insurer also required the exterior mortar to be repaired.
I think one thing people need to think about is wgat is a want and what is a need. We bought a house almost 5 years ago, and there are definitely things we want to do to the house and things we need to be ready for in terms of maintenance. We have an ugly dining room table and not a ton of furniture in our living room, but we don't want to finance anything abd are prioritizing saving for needs (i.e. hot water tank, new shingles). We saved 3 years to redo the landscaping in our back yard. It felt good. Our 3 year goal now is to redo the old deck and to replace the drywall in the garage.
Lmao The prize money she offers is more than all my debt, and I could never afford to just drop $600 on a yard project without saving for months for it first. Really puts things in perspective. I no longer feel any shame.

I’ve never understood a monthly clothing budget. Does that mean they buy something every month? When I buy clothes it’s just once in a while when something needs updating or replacing.
I know! I'm pregnant right now and I refuse to buy maternity clothes when I can just wear oversized hand me downs. Even in my first pregnancy, I only bought 2 maternity dresses and a pack of huge panties 😂. Normally, I might spend $200 a year
No, it means you are putting aside that much money every month to be used on clothes *when you need/want them*. Think of it as every month you put that money in a clothing jar and just keep accumulating it, so that when you want clothes you can just go to that jar. If your monthly clothing budget is tiny, it takes awhile to save up for a new coat or winter boots, for example
So many people believe they don't have to put aside money for those "once in a while" important expenses like clothes or household repairs, then can't understand why their budget doesn't work out.
As I see it before you decorate a house make sure it's in great condition then you can decorate a house always make sure theres no cracks in the foundations
The idea that a bannister and some exterior mortar is holding up insurance is wild. And getting a contractor to do anything for $1200 is pretty outstanding.
I don't know why people would be worried about talking to trades men. My father was a union carpenter in Boston for 45-50 years. He was head carpenter on the Big Dig. All his friends were tradesmen. All his friends were from Ireland, so are my parents. No fear of tradesmen here.
How can you be 30 years old and not have an idea how money works? And a handrail for $700? Two words - Home Depot. A cordless drill would've been a good gift for finishing the projects.

Babysitters for kids at all times and I waited when I was financially stable and have traveled and done all the things I wanted in my 30s. Most of my old acquaintances were jealous because they did not feel like doing the same as I because they did not get along with their parents and preferred maintaining the image of we struggle alone which is stupid because most got their house co-signed by their parents along with the car and wedding paid. At least they are smart to wait before having kids. Many just have them and regret them due to financial or personal issues. When she mentioned he is the dream guy because he spends on her wtv she wants...well that is a typical women that digs for gold and gets replacement when she has less. He looks like he is whipped. Do not believe the image. What people show you is what they want you to see. Now they are financially in deep sh*t and are desperate and need help.
People love to say things like "but they're family!" or "they meant well" or "but they're your parents, of course they love you."
Not everyone can live with family. It's not stupid to choose your mental health over a financial gian.
I Love Gail, she does not keep quiet about the truth of the matter. I Love this couple, they are working together to resolve a problem. They care about their home and their life in general.
Fixing cracks in the walls and adding a banister to the stairs are more important than a fire pit. Silk drapes will rot in the sun, big waste of money.
Leona is a beautiful woman. I hope she’s made peace with her curly hair! Straightening is really damaging.
10+ years ago curly hair was demonized, especially for white women. I hope she's embraced it now that it's in style. I know for me I wasn't about to embrace it back then. Now I do.
It's a beautiful house and I admit, I'd struggle to say anything other than "I will do anything for this house". They seem a rather lovely couple. If it were me, then I would have had palpitations when looking at the prices of rugs and curtains etc, but then I've been poor as dirt, so I know how horrid it is.
The mini Persian rugs during challenge #1 were so darn cute. 🥹🥹🥹🥹
They’re mouse mats! Cheap too! I use one.
First off, I love cats, but when she said they have 2cats, I picture those silk drapes being shredded to pieces.
Lol
Me too 😮😮
My cats don't give a crap about curtains. On the other hand, they will attack live plants, so I can't have those in the house.
Depends on the cats. My cat(s) has a cat flap and doesn't scratch anything in our house although it has no scratch post. Some cats don't feel the urge to scratch in the house.
What a lovely couple! They’re getting on the right track and when Mama is happy everybody is happy cheers to them
That is why most men get into debt
I just cannot that phrase. Lol.
They got divorced and she married a very wealthy old man who owns a winery
A 380k mansion…I know these episodes are old, but damn, the Canadian “Toronto” housing prices now are😂
It’s probably from 2008. There weren’t many jobs.
I hope those silk curtains are heavily lined (doesn't look like it). If not, the sun will disintegrate those gorgeous curtains well before they are finished paying for them.
what gets me is 150k a year and it's only two of them . why not go on a 50k a year to live off of and everything paid off in 5y but this is someone making 35k a year with a family of 5
That is how my hubby and I paid off two homes and saved for retirement. Debt free!
The most beautiful house that I have seen on the show so far. Hope that they can keep it.
Wow. Adjusted for inflation, they made over 200k!! Good for them!!!
"He loves buying me things" On credit.
These two are cutie pies - I hope they made it!
Anyone know what Gail is doing now & where she’s at now? Cause I really think ppl need her advice now more than ever… the Canadian economy is becoming very scary day by day… pls come back Gail .. bring your wisdom & make more of these shows 🙏🙏
This was probably my favorite couple in all the episodes.
You should look up the daycare owner and a “singer” husband. I think you’ll like them better
And I thought I over did it with my $150 rug for my living room 😭 they put me to shame with that Persian rug
At least the rugs and curtains (if properly lined) are a one-time purchase and are quality -good rugs maintain their value. Some people blow the same amount in clothes or cars.
That’s a good point.
No it’s not a “good purchase” if you used credit.
My mom has wool rugs from when she got married and that’s 40 years ago…. she cleans them every summer and no shoes allowed on inside… they do look elegant ❤
They are such a lovely couple...i really hope they are in a much better financial place...and have children by now!! They seem as they would be amazing parents!!
I think they divorced, I saw in another comment
Bravo Gail. You got her out of putting the bills in a drawer! 💕
He reminds me of Adam Sandler playing a character
😂🤚
Yeah little niki 😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
When looking for a trademan I ask for insurance and license. If they mess it up or blow my home up, they are covered. I don't just want some guy with a truck and a phone. It is worth the higher price.
Also, GET IT IN WRITING BEFORE they start. The last time I fell for that, $25 in the door....$75 out the door. There is no fighting that. I had to pay him cash so he got no bank information on a check or card. My first mistake on this was not checking rhe reviews TELLING me they were crooks. I ended up reporting then to the BBB.
I wish gail would get a new show! Ive watched every episode so many times.
Once she drops her bag…. You’re in for it. LOL
Holy hell- no house insurance?
His face when she says: No kids if we're in debt!! 😅😉She's definitely lording it over him
He looked like he was about to cry when she said that.
He looked like he was ready to cry.
That's reasonable. When she goes on maternity leave they will have even less money.
Good for her.
Imagine what the expensive Persian rugs were like when they had kids 😂
And the handmade silk curtains! Especially when the kid finds a kitten on that walking path!
First thing I thought.

It's okay, they are sturdy and you can clean them.
You just puked on 12,000$!! 😅😂
Im surprised the insurance company didn't require them to put the railing in when they bought it, it was one of the first things i had to do when i bought the house.
Same. My seller has to install one before I could close.
Maybe because in Canada rules are different and it was a back stair with little or no use ?
I think these were back stairs, not used, maybe?
I think it was meant as a fun project to get them planning and budgeting and working together. The railing wouldn't have done that.
bring it back Need it Now More Than Ever
They seem like a really nice couple! I love this show!
High school students should have classes to teach financial literacy.
Children should sit at the table while parents do the bills. Let kids see reality.
Lmao
The prize money she offers is more than all my debt, and I could never afford to just drop $600 on a yard project without saving for months for it first.

Normally, I might spend $200 a year
You can save up for more expensive clothes. A good pair of shoes is around 150€. I would save several months for them.
They are an attractive couple!
I love this couple and i hope they get to keep their beautiful homr
This show needs to be a mandatory course in all schools
Spending aside, these two have really good taste.
Nowadays, in Canada that house would be $1.5M easy.
Consumer debt is a profound evil. Financial literacy is key!
Glad things turned out well for this lovely couple. Their home is beautiful. 😊
I love this couple. It’s nice they can work together ❤
What a wonderful and beautiful couple.
Wow ! Impressive. They made great progress and they grew. Congrats to them
Their hair perplexed me this whole time
Thank God I haven't seen this one yet!!! Made my day.
One of the best shows, and all the memories. Back when regular meals were $5.
I wish the money they spent on rugs went to house repair
They spend 9k a month!? 😱
Been watching Gayle for years. Love this show
I hope after paying off their debt the wife invested some money in hair treatments. Her poor hair is so damaged 😱
Is definitely straightens it when wet. Signature 2000s lol
His hair, though, is luxurious; so it evens out!
That’s all I could look at! It’s so fried I just kept wanting her to cut it all off.
I hope she chopped it all off and went with a pixie cut. That definitely would have suited her!
Hopefully he invested in rhinoplasty too.
I loved this when it came out. Fun to revisit and look at the cost of things way back then!
9100 ? I think they are the couple with the most spending so far , from all the episodes i saw at least .
This lady has got to be Caleb Hammer’s Mom 😂
I was just saying this 😂
Beautiful home.
As I see it before you decorate a house make sure it's in great condition then you can decorate a house always make sure theres no cracks in the foundations
Gail got me out of debt! Best book and show ever!
Weird you worry about debt AFTER you get the debt with a house and unnecessary trips. Ridiculous sh*t.
Thank you for uploading!!!!!
How can you be 30 years old and not have an idea how money works? And a handrail for $700? Two words - Home Depot. A cordless drill would've been a good gift for finishing the projects.
I hope the show comes back!! Just love it. If it comes back though... People will be like I'm in debt because I bought groceries 😅 that's our situation now
Love watching these episodes. They should do a episode showing where they are today.
jut remember her catchphrase...the shit gonna hit the fan at one point...so saves money. My job was so secure and I couldn't see how I could have money problem because the money flow. Then covid-19. The shit hit the fan, my job lockdown for almost 2 years ( entertainment sector). But I followed her advice, and everything was ok, my savings help me a lot. But I thought so much often about her catchphrse during the lock down
That house has easily quadrupled in value...
In 11 years?
@@jenjones90 Yep, cause pretty much all houses have right now. Housing crisis is a thing that is happening.
It would be 1.5M over where i live. Easy
