    Whats ironic is that the Lich King had less chance of winning against Sauron than a normal human simply because of Sauron viewing him as an actual potential threat. Sauron lost his ring simply for his hubris in how little he saw in man.

      His hubris wasn't entirely misplaced either. He literally left the door to Mt Doom open because he figured that anyone getting close to dropping the ring in would succumb to it's will, and he was entirely right, Frodo was unwilling to throw the ring into the mountain, it was Golum biting it off his finger that ended Sauron. IF they hadn't kept Golum alive, they would have failed.

    What I like about Tolkien is that his idea of power and magic isn’t fireballs and lighting, it’s the subtle manipulation of probability, words turning into into truth as they will it so and the literal manipulation of fate and destiny itself. A lot less flashy at first glance but so much more deep, meaningful and powerful the longer you think about it.

    • @pacmonster066
      @pacmonster066 8 месяцев назад +131

      I mean sure...it's also the flashy stuff too. Like when Sauron makes himself a ten foot tall armored behemoth with a giant mace to crush dozens of knights at once. And Balrogs are basically the definition of "flashy power".

    • @Antidragon-nl7by
      @Antidragon-nl7by 8 месяцев назад +116

      Sauron never crushed dozens of knights at once in the books... but he DID grab an elven lord (Gil-Galid) by the neck, hoist him into the air, and immolate the poor bastard from the inside out. WAY cooler than fireballs or lightning IMHO.
      Also, the Balrog's worst power in the books was the fear they projected; they pretty much turned you into a whimpering mess just be being in the same room with you.

    Sauron only lost because of multiple interventions of God himself. And Sauron was right that nobody would actually want to destroy the ring. Tolkien has said that it's literally impossible to willingly destroy it. That's why in the books, Gollum accidentally destroyed it by slipping into the fire and in the movies falling in fighting over it with Frodo. In both versions, the ring had to be unintentionally destroyed.

    • @LordSiravant
      @LordSiravant Год назад +705

      It wasn't even an accident. Tolkien's letters explicitly state Gollum falling was also an act of God. Eru wanted to make certain Sauron lost.

    Sauron's control over Numenor is even more badass than showed in the video.
    Numenor is basically the Atlantis of Middle Earth - in fact, Tolkien wrote it as much.
    Not only Numenor was a massive island-empire with a massive population, but the humans of Numenor were not just "common" humans, but rather a "superior" kind of humans, with vast more skills, knowledge and wisdom than "normal" humans, and with incredibly large lifespans too. The first king of Numenor lived for 900 years!
    Numenor was a vast human utopia inspired in the legends of Atlantis.
    So it happens that, after forging the One Ring, the elves felt it's power and removed their 3 rings in order to not be controlled by Sauron, which infuriated him and thus he launched a war against... Pretty much all of Middle Earth lol.
    When the Numenoreans learned of this, they sent a massive fleet to Middle Earth, with enough troops to conquer ALL of it (yes, the Numenoreans were THAT powerful).
    Instead of waging war against them however, Sauron SURRENDERED HIMSELF and ALLOWED HIMSELF TO BE TAKEN PRISONER into Numenor.
    And so, *as a prisoner* , Sauron CORRUPTED most of the Numenoreans, to the point of convincing them to make HUMAN SACRIFICES to Morgoth and eventually SERVE HIM (serve Sauron)
    So, rather than fighting the Numenoreans, he managed to take control of them from within, taking control of the most powerful empire on Middle Earth for his own.
    That's how badass Sauron is (and this feat was even greater than any of Morgoth)

    I'd like to add that Tolkien himself said the ring was literally impossible to destroy willingly. The whole reason Sauron lost the final battle was because of a random chance that his ring would be accidentally dropped into Mount Doom. The magic in the ring is at its strongest in Mount Doom, making anyone unable to have the willpower to destroy it.

      This was taken into account by everyone who tasked Frodo. He wasn't expected to do the impossible, he was tasked to "reach mount doom" and let destiny play it's part, hopefully. The fact Frodo reached the very end with the ring on him was a miracle by itself, but he was not expected to actually destroy the ring himself, as no one can destroy the ring willingly.
      When you think about it, the whole of humanity, the suicide assault on Aragorn's part against Sauron and basically everything that had happened was hinging on a "maybe something good will happen at the end". Really tells you how dire the situation was in Middle Earth.

      Frodo was destined to carry the One Ring to Mount Doom, because he had in abundance two fundamental Hobbit characteristics: toughness of body, mind, and spirit when pushed to the limit; and lack of desire to dominate anyone. Frodo was able to withstand the corruption of the Ring longer than any other being could, because it had so little in him to work on.

      Smaug is great for putting things into perspective. A rough estimate of his size puts him at the size of a football field (based on being apparently unable to open his mouth inside a 5' tall passage), and would lose a fight to a Balrog. Gandalf the Grey was barely able to kill a Balrog, and as the Grey he was in a weakened state. The Witch-king of Angmar was considered the equal of Gandalf the White, who was in a stronger state than when he was the Grey. Even then the Witch-king was in a weakened state because Sauron lacked the Ring, and was considered but a shadow of what he would be when Sauron is at full power. And Sauron himself eclipses even the Witch-king.

      I feel like this is a bit of an exaggeration and I actually think that Arthas definitely could fight off Saurnon taking over his mind directly. What I think would be more likely is that Arthas takes the Ring, leaving a Sauron's spirit to reconstitute over like 5000 years and in that time, the Ring is building upits influence over Arthas subtly to thebpoint he always has it near or on him and is overly protective of it. When Sauron re-announces himself, the Ring helps drive Arthas into a stat where he's overly paranoid and protective and sets about acting to prevent Sauron ever getting the Ring back and then abandoning Arthas at a pivotal moment, leaving him in a disadvantageous position meanwhile having Sauron end up getting the Ring back and either using it's influence to finally get past Arthas' defenses or, more likely to eventually defeat Arthas in battle, strip him of his own artefacts and now t of his power, then break and enslave him while he's weakened, analyse and unlock the secrets of all of Arthas magic and his artefacts before taking all the power and knew magical techniques he can before ultimately giving Arthas' back his stuff and installing him as his new right had and giving him command of the Nazgul. Hell, he might even force a Ring on Arthas in his weakened state and completely bind him to his will that way. Perhaps he'd even manage to discover how to pull souls out of Frostmourne and bind the soul or Arthas himself. The Sky's the limit here.

    A couple things to note about Sauron as well:
    He is never actually stated to wield a weapon whatsoever, not even the mace the movie had him use. Rather, Sauron is described as fighting, and killing, with his "bare hands"! Which is described as being blackened and searingly hot!
    Man slaughtered some of the greatest heroes to ever live with his HANDS.
    Also, his greatest weapon is actually his ability to convince dang near anybody of dang near anything. He convinced the Valar ( essentially gods ) that he wasnt a bad guy really after genociding millions of people for thousands of years. he convinced the Numenoreans that actually they should betray Eru, he convinced the elves that they should make the rings.
    he even convinced a man that if he only told him the whereabouts of his friend that Sauron would let him see his family. Only to promptly execute the man afterwards.

      It's geniunely startling how easily the Internet breeds misinformation and delusion, at times, even for me.
      No, none of this is really true. Sauron is never really described in any real detail AT ALL, especially in his fight against the -adventuring party- Last Alliance; we know he burned Gil-Galad, but that doesn't inherently mean he literally was so monumentally stupid as to go out to fight 3-5 legendary heroes with NO WEAPON.
      He didn't 'convince' the Valar of anything, and the idea that he could or did legitimately fool them is so absurdly divorced from the actual source material as to be comical.

      @@papapalps2415just to reiterate, i do agree that misinformation spreads quite fast, especially by those that sound the surest, and am therefore glad that of my six or so statements of Sauron's doings, only two seemed to warrant pointing out, and only one was truly flawed while the other is strictly a point of interpretation.
      I see Sauron killing the greatest Heroes of the time, breaking the sword Anduril, and almost winning a monumental battle with only his Hands, hands blackened with soot and blazing hot like that of a furnace, as utterly terrifying and fantastical.
      While i disagree that Sauron must have had a weapon, if that is how you interpret him then who am i to disagree with your imaginings of a made up character.

    When I first saw Balrog vs TJ Combo, it became my favorite death battle by a significant margin for a long time. I can confidently say that this death battle has significantly lowered that gap. What can I say about Sauron vs Litch King that does it justice? The analysis did an excellent job describing how much of a threat they were to their respective worlds, and somehow managed to properly convey thier stories in such a short time. The animation is top notch. Whatever shots I used to think looked a bit off now look much better to me after seeing them a few times. The impact of their weapons clashing is immense, as it should be seeing as it's a mace hitting a greatsword. In fact, impactful is probably how I would describe this entire animation. Every single detail, sound, movement carried the weight of ten elephants strapped to a black hole. Sauron taking a step or even sitting down hits harder than half the death battles ever made. The dialog is top notch, with excellent voice acting that gets across how much the combatants see each other as being beneath them. The lines are stellar too, and it makes an amazing dynamic of Arthus's grandstanding compared to Sauron's much more subtle and sinister tone- which both fit the characters. Arthus literally brags about not having a heart, and Sauron never shows emotion in the entire fight until someone dares to suggest that he belongs to someone else. Top it off with stellar effects and probably the best cinematography death battle has ever had, and you get my second favorite death battle ever.

      There is a poem, and a really awesome rendition by Clamavi de Profundis that mixes it with Galadriel’s Namarië.
      The full thing here:
      He chanted a song of wizardry,
      Of piercing, opening, of treachery,
      Revealing, uncovering, betraying.
      Then sudden Felagund there swaying
      Sang in answer a song of staying,
      Resisting, battling against power,
      Of secrets kept, strength like a tower,
      And trust unbroken, freedom, escape;
      Of changing and of shifting shape,
      Of snares eluded, broken traps,
      The prison opening, the chain that snaps.
      Backwards and forwards swayed their song.
      Reeling and foundering, as ever more strong
      The chanting swelled, Felagund fought,
      And all the magic and miht he brought
      Of Elvenesse into his words.
      Softly in the gloom they heard the birds
      Singing afar in Nargothrond,
      The sighing of the sea beyond,
      Beyond the western world, on sand,
      On sand of pearls in Elvenland.
      Then the gloom gathered; darkness growing
      In Valinor, the red blood flowing
      Beside the Sea, where the Noldor slew
      The Foamriders, and stealing drew
      Their white ships with their white sails
      From lamplit havens. The wind wails,
      The wolf howls. The ravens flee.
      The ice mutters in the mouths of the Sea.
      The captives sad in Angband mourn.
      Thunder rumbles, the fires burn -
      And Finrod fell before the throne.
