PertSnergleman's Review:
--------------------------------------------
Steffi Graf nearly saw the defense of her third title crumble as suddenly as men's #1 Jim Courier's pursuit of his first.
Playing the last match on Centre Court, Graf dropped her first set to Mariaan de Swardt of South Africa, won the second set decisively and then needed to hang on for a 5-7, 6-0, 7-5 victory.
De Swardt put on a fierce display of serving that kept Graf on the defensive and almost resulted in the second biggest upset of the day.
Though many expected de Swardt to fold, she hung on to provide Graf with some nervous moments. De Swardt fought off a break point in the eighth game to even the set, then won the first point on Graf's serve. But in the end, Graf was too strong for her 21-year-old opponent, ranked 76th in the world. She won eight of the last 10 points and the match.
"It was a very difficult match," the 23-year-old German said of de Swardt, who is playing doubles here with Elise Burgin of Baltimore. "She really just played well. She served very well. Except for that one game in the first set, I don't feel bad at all for some reason."
Graf said, "Maybe my return wasn't as sharp as I wanted it to be, but I only struggled on one service game. It's just the way she played."
While the second-seeded Graf advanced to the fourth round, three lesser seeds fell:
-- No. 9 Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere was beaten 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) by Kristen Godridge, 19, of Australia, ranked No. 141.
-- No. 11 Jana Novotna was ousted 6-3, 6-3 by American Patty Fendick, ranked No. 68.
-- No. 16 Judith Wiesner was upset 6-1, 7-5 by Naoko Sawamatsu, who became the first Japanese woman to get this far. Спорт
Mariaan de Swardt - das "Köfferchen"...
Wow whoever posted this is an amazing person ❤
All three of their matches went the distance, 3 sets. Steffi won 2, Mariaan 1, good match up.
I remember watching this live too. Had never heard of de Swardt before and it was expected to be an easy victory for Graf. How tense it turned out to be for Graf fans!
This was the match that made me a tennis fan, will never forget this one. Love me some Mariaan. All or nothing tennis.
Man, the South Africans made Graf sing for for her meals at times! Coetzer and de Swardt could really hand it to Graf on their good days! Mariann was a phenomenal player. I'm surprised she didn't make more of an impact during her career.
youre right, Steffi was beaten twice by de Swardt and 3 times by Amanda Coetzer i think😊😊😊😊
@@dagingbuenaobra6563 Even 4 times by tiny Amanda.
But all those losses were under extraordinary circumstances as Coetzer herself admitted after Steffi had ended her career.
I remember watching this match live and it was so tense. When Steffi slipped over late in that third set, it really looked like she was going to lose.
It’s crazy that Graf struggled more against this woman than against much better players like Martinez, Fernandez or Huber. She even said after her loss to her in 1995 that this was the best tennis someone ever played against her.
Steffi was rationalizing her loss that day.
She played that match a few days after having been interrogated for 8 hours by the D.A.'s office in the tax evasion investigation. Her dad was in pre-trial detention at that time. Her head simply was elsewhere.
where is ViirginiaWade or Fred Stolle?no commentary?😊😊😊
Marianne de Swardt is a good player, if shes very fit ,she could in top 10 players, Bud Collins said she just a little chubby or Something, ❤Steffi the GOAT❤
Does anyone have the 1999 one? That match was special
