Love the commentators' discussion at 12mins - Steffi looks weakest on grass, sometimes prepares late on forehand, unlikely to win Wimbledon. Steffi wins 7 Wimbledons.

Totally funny. Though, at this time she had already been on the tour for a handful of years. I thinks he started at age 13. She had built a reputation for having a devastating but brutal forehand. Her misses early on when she pulled the trigger were huge. She had doubters because the game was all about consistency then. "Overhitting" was a concept that was frowned upon. That said, she proved them ALL wrong.

Martina Navratilova's dominance of Wimbledon seemed absolutely endless back then. She was the definitive grass court player. I think most people really struggled to imagine anybody but Martina winning Wimbledon, especially since Martina had beaten Steffi in straight sets in both the 1987 Wimbledon and US Open finals and they were yet to meet in 1988.

She really changed the game in so many ways. Grass was only for net rushers before her ("...she is not as comfortable with serve-and-volleying and you just have to play that way on grass"); then she came along and dominated Wimbledon with serve +1s and flat power shots that the quick, low bounce made both easy to accelerate and difficult to retrieve. The majority of Wimbledon champs ever since have succeeded playing that way (Davenport, Venus, Serena, Sharapova, Kvitova, Rybakina). Crazy to think that people once felt Steffi was *worse* on faster surfaces.

In later years,, Steffi didn't actually remember she'd won this match 6-0 6-0 and was somewhat embarrassed to be reminded. She was taking part in a quiz with other players and her husband, Andre Agassi. One question was who was the only player in the open era to win a grand slam final 6-0, 6-0. Steffi apparently answered Martina Navratilova. She was somewhat taken back when she was told it was her.

You just cant let one loss derail you. In my H.S. senior season, I both dished out a double bagel and then took one i8n the same season. After the lopsided loss, I won the next 14 matches in a row while hardly losing a set along the way to finish the season 19-1. They dont hand out trophies for perfect seasons anyway.
Even good sports teams take a big loss, you just gotta not let it get to you and regroup even when you get shelled by some top player or top team. Its still just one loss. Im pretty sure the GSW didnt mind dropping a few harmless games to hapless teams during their 73-9 season either.
Natasha went on to win over 63% of her matches as proof of her talent. These ladies were pretty young back then too.
