Ive commented on this video multiple times over 10 years. Its almost like my personal emotional account of how i am dealing with PTSD as my life progresses, and as i see the world progress. These men in Rise Against are better at connecting within the individual veteran more than our own comrades. They dont realize the impact this song has had on millions of us who struggle everyday. I don't even believe their intent was known how far it would go.
Thank you so much for writing this song. I understood it in 2009. I understand it even more in 2023.

It reminds me of a friend who shared his experience in Iraq. While thankfully he was able to avoid combat, the one time he had to pull his gun on somebody was for a man who did not comply at a roadblock and turned out to be involved with an IED installation. My friend expressed that while he was drawn on him, the two of them just sat there staring at each other, neither moving and the man never spoke. Until the man was taken into custody, my friend was praying and begging inside that this man did not move a muscle or try anything that would warrant the shot. Thankfully nothing happened.
It is a minor experience compared to so many others, but it was a horrible situation and really bothered him. My heart goes out to any who experienced something similar or worse. I can't even imagine.

@Abigail Clark throughout the beginning of the song he is speaking of the U.S flag and the honor he feels fighting for it, but he begins to resent it after seeing the terrible things that they are doing, all these things are weighing in on him and building then when he accidentally shoots the woman holding the white flag as a sign of surrender he hits his turning point, he no longer sings of faith in the U.S flag after that incident in the song. Instead of the U.S flag that he vowed to carry to the grave in the beginning of the song, he brings home the white flag of peace, im sure in honor of her and the other innocents who died for "democracy".

    • @roax206
      @roax206 2 года назад +7

To me when he sings the final version of the chorus after that he goes from portraying a character trying to convince yourself that he is doing the right thing to downright anguish. literally crying out "so damn proud of me".
He then says he "brought home that flag" referring to the flag of peace carried by the girl as opposed to the USA flag used in the rest of the song and says "the only flag I trust". Creating a theme of fighting specifically for what you believe rather than simply those that claim to value it. This is further brought home by repeating the opening which is given the new meaning of seeing the world for what it really is.

  • @Zhohan-
    @Zhohan- 8 лет назад +12912

People keep misinterpreting the lyrics. The song isn't out to vindicate how terrible the soldier is. In fact, we see the story from his POV. He joins, thinking he's doing the right thing. Instead, he finds out war is hell and he's not fighting for freedom, he's fighting against the oppressed around him. Instead of being this paragon of freedom that he thought he would be, he saw himself as the one causing it. This song isn't against servicemembers. It actually tries to sympathize with them, while making the statement clear that war is terrible for all sides and that the justification of "We're protecting democracy" just isn't true when it's really just to further the interests of business and that we have lost our humanity far enough that he killed a child. This song has far more respect for servicemen and women around the world as it shows the reality of what they may have to face.

i interpret the white flag that he brought home as a way of saying "no more killing! no more killing!" and the white on the american flag stands for purity so if the white stands for purity on the american flag and a white flag in general means surrender
i believe what the deeper meaning is, is that he has seen enough brutality and murder in his time in the service and he no longer believes in killing but only surrender
and the white paint in terms of the american flag is just another way of saying "im pure i no longer kill"

Its oil or whatever depends on war you're in. So when you realized its not your war, happens what happened to you, blaming yourself for what have you done thinking you were doing to serve country. The last chorus killed me. I graduated early to join. I chose the Navy on a last-second descision. I thought I fucked up by not going combat, until I saw what our politicians were really doing. We weren't fighting terror. We were playing a game that the elites demanded we play. They told us we were defending our families and home. When I realized that the same governments funded both sides of the war, I lost my shit. I was discharged with an OTH, I was put in a mental ward, and I was treated like a criminal by most people I knew, for seeing the truth and talking about it. Our servicemen are not monsters. They are good people that were lied to and lured into a war that doesn't exist. A war on ideology. The last verse kills me, because I knew good guys that had to make the hardest call any man can make, and because of these politicians and bankers, they had to choose between themselves and these children that were being used, just the same as the poor men that had to fire those shots. War is made by politicians, but they never fight. They enjoy the show, from afar. Sound like Rome, much?

@@MarxEngelsLeninStalin That’s what THEY want the masses to believe but it’s bigger then “capitalism” and it’s not just any “capitalism” it’s corporate capitalism. I won’t pretend to have it all figured out because I don’t but it’s not just one thing or category by any stretch. I’ve learned to seek deeper, question more, try to peel away at the half truths, challenge even things I was once certain about and only then has it become clearer that there are things that we just don’t know because the powers that be over many decades have worked very hard to hide it.
Unfortunately far too much trust is given to those that appear in authority positions without considering perhaps, that they have been compromised, pressured, threatened, and more.
After reading and listening to the speech JFK gave called the president and the press, it seems pretty clear much has been happening that a lot are still not aware of unfortunately. I’ve come to find that some of history has been terribly distorted which goes back to the blind trust a lot of us dish out. No one is immune either.
It actually really stunned me to revisit the nine eleven event with the objective to disprove what I considered just rumors and “conspiracy” crap to realize even if I don’t believe all of them, there are so many things surrounding it that just do not add up. I invite others to just go back and watch the mass amount of press coverage from numerous outlets from that day because they are insightful.

The military forces of a country should only be big enough to defend their own borders. Now we have a moronic and racist oligarchy trying to force their greed on the rest of the world. Yup it's the broken states of 'Murica. I mean not because my own country is innocent but our wars have always been for simple land near us or self defense. To think that the world's biggest bully is armed with nukes is just scary. Got nothing but respect for the individuals but the US military (and most of NATO) is just rotten to the core.

King Diamond (a metal musician originally from Denmark living in the US) explained it pretty well. “I am eligible to vote in the upcoming US Presidential election, but I won't, because there isn't a candidate who represents what I want. In Denmark, you have 13 or more political parties, so it's not too difficult to find a party who reflect your views. Coalitions happen all the time, and there's a decent percentage that will be represented. In America, though, it's a two party system, and that's bad because they spend much of the time disagreeing with each other for the sake of casing arguments. If one patty suggests doing something, you know the other will automatically argue against that. So, what chance is there for a reasonable representation?"

I dont feel disrespected or that Rise Against is Anti military. I feel they painted a very true picture of what I went through for my country and the corruption of my own humanity. I've watch horrible things happen and done horrible things for my country under the guise of being viewed as a hero. I have severe PTSD and have a very hard time living a civilian life. Nice compilation of quotes. Sad though that you refuse to at least tell people who actually said these words before you. For example: Bertrand Russel "war doesn't determine who's right...", Plato "only the dead have seen the end of war!" or Ellie Wiesel "There are no victors in war, only victims!" I don't mean to attack you in anyway but this is exactly how the wisdom of these great philosophers is forgotten. This should also help you in case you have to write an essay or academic paper anytime soon. Always provide citations of your sources!! But you did put a nice spin on it though :)

And I really wish I could properly articulate just how much it mirrors the journey so perfectly; from the young naïve desire to see the world and be something bigger than yourself, all the way to the end of the journey that none of us ever expected to end the way it did-- tragedy ten years after the uniform was put on for the last time. From pride at signing up when we were attacked 20 years ago, to sitting at home disabled and discarded, crying to a youtube video. "Just medals and scars, so damn proud of me. All these people arguing back and forth whether this music video is patriotic towards America or not are not even discussing the topic of the song. The song has nothing to do with America and it never mentions America once. The song is just saying that there's no winners in war, just people who lose less then the other guy and that war shouldn't be glorified.

About 10 years ago a school friend of mine died when we were not yet 18 years old. It was her favorite song and was played at the funeral - there was a video of her singing the song herself with the guitar. I couldn't hear it for years after that. When the song came on the radio today, for the first time I didn't turn off the radio and listened to the song to the end. Every second really hurt. This song will hurt my whole lifetime.

Serving the interests of corporations and the selfish desires of governments is not honorable it is evil and it is working against humans. @@Gooses_Pond “Monsters Have No Right to Judge”
We all have a past that will haunt us to our dying breath. It will consume you if given half a chance. You see, life is subjective and ultimately based upon one's own introspective.
Some of us have left bodies bruised and broken to a point from which they will never recover. Others have left a string of broken hearts alongside the pile of depleted husks that they once referred to as friends, or even family. They are casualties of the havoc and devastation we left in the wake of our passing.
Under varying perspectives, these are all examples of victims. These unfortunate souls, are left ruined before being discarded by our trivial yet egotistical justifications. If one refuses to accept that they are personally responsible, it leads down a slippery slope that is known as denial.
Regardless of our intention, this path can lead us into believing that we were the “true” victims of circumstance. Potentially, this can transform us into a “wolf in sheep's clothing”. It is an act of selfishness to allow ourselves to believe this lie.
Everyone has a history that fades along with the passage of time. Still the past is the past; even if it is forgotten. Something considered trivial to one, may be pivotal to another. I guess what I am trying to say is, that we must never give up and always strive to be better. Just know that you fail in the same second that you think you succeed.

    Lyrics
He said son, have you seen the world?
Well, what would you say if I said that you could
Just carry this gun, you'll even get paid
I said that sounds pretty goodBlack leather boots
    Spit-shined so bright
They cut off my hair but it looked alright
    We marched and we sang
    We all became friends
As we learned how to fightA hero of war
    Yeah that's what I'll be
    And when I come home
They'll be damn proud of me
    I'll carry this flag
To the grave if I must
    Cause it's a flag that I love
And a flag that I trustI kicked in the door
    I yelled my commands
    The children, they cried
    But I got my man
    We took him away
    A bag over his face
From his family and his friendsThey took off his clothes
    They pissed in his hands
    I told them to stop
    But then I joined in
    We beat him with guns
    And batons not just once
But again and againA hero of war
    Yeah that's what I'll be
    And when I come home
They'll be damn proud of me
    I'll carry this flag
To the grave if I must
    Cause it's a flag that I love
And a flag that I trustShe walked through bullets and haze
    I asked her to stop
    I begged her to stay
    But she pressed on
    So I lifted my gun
And I fired awayAnd the shells jumped through the smoke
    And into the sand
That the blood now had soaked
She collapsed with a flag in her hand
A flag white as snowA hero of war
    Is that what they see?
    Just medals and scars
    So damn proud of me
And I brought home that flag
    Now it gathers dust
    But it's a flag that I love
The only flag that I trustHe said, son, have you seen the world?
Well what would you say, if I said that you could?

My family raised me the right way, but when I got to my teen years and up until now, people never truly gave back the same respect that I was taught from my family. I don’t like the line “and still registered for the army” like they are a lesser form of being. Some of the smartest men I’ve looked up to in my life have been from the Army and all branches of our military. You don’t have to be a dumb grunt with a death wish to be a soldier, that man served his country and I salute him.

They are people who have done and seen horrible things and been told it was for good a reason " not the whole "grumble grumble, soldiers are evil, the military is evil".

And they come home and realize that they and the ones they fought are really not so different. They all have family, friends, and loved ones. And they must come to terms with what they did to those people, those people with parents and with children.. because they were told to. It's the guilt at the heart of PTSD. This is about the soldiers line of progression. Starting in basic thinking they are fighting for America and will come back a hero. Next being deployed and finding out you are really fighting for that person next to you and doing what you must to survive. Finally committing the atrocities of war and getting it. The line “a hero of war, is that what they see? Just medals and scars, so damn proud of me.” He’s come full circle and understands. That standing ovation you get when you come home doesn’t mean dick. The world will never know the monster you had to be to come home. Heroes don’t come home only the monsters do.

My son who has been in the Army for more than 2 years now introduced me to this song. Civilians generally look at those in service as heroes, we are proud of them, we idolize them. But what we can't do is understand their struggles. How many times are they forced to go against their own morals and values for the greater good and the irreparable damage caused leaves them tortured. The man in the song, having to protect his platoon killed a child. Not knowing until it was too late that she was innocent. That would break any person. Soldiers are not psychopaths without conscience. They are humans with feelings and a lot of heart and they come home broken. Humans were never designed to kill and psychologically cannot handle it. I love the reality of this song and its message.

This song is amazing, however many people take it differently, how it was intended to be taken in my eyes is that he believes he isn't a hero of war... That the real heroes of war are the unnamed, the ones who died defending their country, the ones who hadn't come back alive and gave everything, the ones who don't have graves, the ones who truly deserve the medals can't receive them, and that the medals are empty, if not angering and depressing, that it isn't something their proud to have.
Any soldier who has lost a friend in the line of duty and comes back home is filled with regrets and doubts... But one who is given a medal for coming back alive is filled with more than that, it's spite and anger, that they don't deserve the medal.

Jay Zee War is not a pretty affair... But there are heroes, and they're the ones who give their lives for their countries, it may be true that no one wins when it comes to war, but it isn't shameful to fight for your country and die for it. I still stand by what I said, most people with those medals find them angering or insulting, they're hollow and meaningless when you lose someone you've known most of your life... You don't want the medal, you want your friends, I find it to be a shallow and heartless gesture myself..

Ice Feather I know you mean well and what you said is true, but please look at the lyrics of this song more carefully. It talks about US soldiers that torture and piss on an enemy soldier, and one that shoots/murders an unarmed women who didn't stop at a border. Obviously these incidents are traumatic for the soldiers and I think they meant well, the situation they are in made them like that. But no "country" is worth doing such disgusting things to another person. People are human beings first before they are citizens or members of their country. Politicians just use people's sense of "patriotism" in order to send them to other countries to do these terrible things, unfortunately.

I showed This song to My dad and he loved it!
He told me a story about when he was in the Swedish military.
So basically, he was with his group (think it was Delta) and they were controlling the border between we're the military had control, and were the "terrorists" had control. When they were watching, my dad saw two parents crying on their side behind the fence between the border. He got to them and they said that their two children was on the other side. He wasn't allowed to go over to the other side, because then he dead in a few second. But my dad borrowed a car from someone (I don't really remember) and drove right into their opponents side. The other guys made his radio buzz like crazy, but he wanted to get the children. He actually found the two kids that told him that their parents was on the other side, so he knew it was them. He drove them back to the military's side and the children rushed into their parents arms. They were so happy to see each other. However, his other mates were really angry for risking his life but he managed to bring a family together and basically saved the children.

aviatorEngineer Yes you can. The song is clearly anti-war, which means it’s obviously against the military, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s opposing the average soldier. The song is making a point that war is hell, and that many young men don’t realize what they’re signing up for when they join. It’s pro-soldier, as it tells the real story of war rather than some glamorized version pushed by the media, Hollywood, or politicians.

I seriously love how Rise Against is anti war, but they never once insult the soldiers, airmen, marines, sailors, you know the people actually fighting. In fact all their anger seems to be pointed at the powers that be, the politicians, the VA, the system in general. As someone who’s in the Army, I really love that.
As to this song and Survivors Guilt, they have both become a huge favorite of mine rather quickly.
With everything going on in Afghanistan, all the uncertainty, and the chaos, to everyone that’s over there, please be careful.
