I showed this to my middle-school students aswell, yet most of them didnt like it because its too "loud and aggresive" to them... And they didnt get the jist of it...Well more for me I guess 😁
I always felt identified with this song from the point of view of my family starting to lose everything (job, house, and even the very family), and myself as a teenager having to fight harder than the rest to achieve anything I wanted. Then now I'm also feeling identified but from a political standpoint, looking at the reality of my falling country (Argentina), it's crisis, and how the governments show themselves as "holding us up", but in reality they are just burying us further down. And if the course of things keep its path, the unevitable runaway into exile. Feels like this is the very song that fits my life. But I'm no fool though, I know I'm still lucky and I'm neither the hungry or the cold. I'm just stuck held down, further down each day but still have the chance to fight against it. Sadly there are people, the people for whom the song is really about, that are held way further down than me and can only fight for survival. For those out there, my hopes for you to have the strength to hold your ground, and mainly the strength to still get yourselves a proper education while fighting starvation, cause that's the very tool that can make you really strike back out of misery. No one can fight for us, they'll just let us down. We have to be the ones to stand our own grounds.
Lyrics: Warm yourself by the fire, son And the morning will come soon I'll tell you stories of a better time In a place that we once knew Before we packed our bags And left all this behind us in the dust We had a place that we could call home And a life no one could touch So don't hold me up now I can stand my own ground I don't need your help now You will let me down, down, down! Don't hold me up now I can stand my own ground I don't need your help now You will let me down, down, down! We are the angry and the desperate The hungry, and the cold We're the ones who kept quiet And always did what we were told But we've been sweating while you slept so calm In the safety of your home We've been pulling out the nails that hold up Everything you've known Don't hold me up now I can stand my own ground I don't need your help now You will let me down, down, down! The beginning of this song is so fucking solid. The rest of the song is great I just wanted to emphasize that the begining (with that guitar riff and the vocals) is perhaps the greatest I've heard on a song......like ever
TheTricker96 He's referring to the emotional build up the riff creates. Even though it's repeated, the drumming intensity takes away from it (which is not bad at all, it's how music should be).
Listening right now on a separate service. Came here to say that I was lucky enough to see them live and wow, I was blown away by the singer’s powerful voice! He more than pulls this off live, as do the rest of the band, and I really like when I can say that. (Sometime between 2005 and 2008)
I can already picturing myself in an old folks home 60 years from now jamming to this in front of the nurses and them hearing it as "classical". Instantly I'll transform back to my 22 year old self.
This reminds of my teenage years. I used to always listen to them a lot with my best friend from high school every time we used to meet and I remember taking the train to his town and blasting Rise Against every time. He loved Motorhead as well and got me into them which I didn't listen as much as Judas Priest. Kevin was such a special person. And now that he passed away by his own hands I'm imprisoned in the hell of my own mind, longing for a break from reality, but sometimes, I come here to remind myself that there was a time of my life where I was genuinely happy. Every moment is the last we have, cherish it wholeheartedly and with the hope that things will get better eventually. I hope you found a place that you can call home, brother.
Even though this song is about sweatshop labor this song still reminds me of stagnant town that I am from with no room to grow or be something more than a sweatshop laborer!
Most minimum wage jobs are basically modern sweat shoes, employers refuse to hire enough workers so they can guilt trip the ones they have into doing more and more work, then they complain like no one wants to work. (Also the song is mainly about refuges but also uses sweat shopes in the imagery)
@@avox2612 I doubt any of the guitars where made overseas. It is extremely common, that musicians will only buy and use american made guitars and amps.

This song hits so much different these days 🥺 since I was an early teen, it's crazy the message never changed its just im old enough to understand it now
"Fair Trade" at the end is great. Like, in case you missed it, the video is about the horrors of outsourcing for those impacted, just so that we can have our Nikes and bananas. IMHO, the lyrics are applicable to both the reality of outsourcing and the horrors of what refugees face. Either way, fabulous song. This and "Hero of War" are gold.
The sufferer and the witness is so fucking well balanced... has raw emotions, has sadness, has hope. Has some killer riffs and was damn fresh when it came out, hands down, the best work they have atm
Sufferer and the Witness is great, but Siren Song was my first full album and Endgame has to be my favorite. I have a quote from Architects as my senior quote.
Rise against has only become more relevant as the middle class has continued to shrink. Same with rage against the machine. Every year their music becomes more prophetic than it was when it was written.
@@TheRealDrae the meaning on the song is about the United States using immagrants for sweatshops and using their hope for a better life in the U.S. for cheap food trading
Damn. As an immigrant, I'm thankful for everything my parents sacrificed to give me and my sibling a better life. Hits hard when you think that could have been you...
Back in 6th and 7th grade my gym teacher used to play this song when we were jogging and I would like to thank Mr Eastman for introducing me to this band ✊
Rise Against was a huge turning point for me and one of the main catalysts of my political awakening and formation of my own views separate from what adults around me told me was right. I'm grateful for that. Siren Song of the Counter Culture and Sufferer and the Witness were essential albums.
Honestly, I used to listen to them when I was younger, thinking how they were so correct in their political views, but then I grew up and seen things, lived through things, got more wise. I still absolutely love the band and listen to it after all these years, I just don't find them to be correct on many things as far as politics go. Still, gonna scream every lyric and play every chord of their songs I can play - no issue, love them
The vid gets dislikes because it is completely paradoxical in nature: You have a song which is, broadly speaking, denouncing globalization and presumably, its effect upon US industries, its economies and the workers that support it. Merely 8 seconds into it, the singer is holding a microphone. There is a 98% chance it is a Shure 58 (which are *the* standard microphones for "live" vocal performances). Shure Inc. shifted production from Illinois to Mexico in 1983, and into China in 2005. Also, be sure to check 3m18s. The kick drum is Tama = made in Japan.
35 year old me looking back at the teen that use to rock this....man time flew i wish i could talk to that kid! This song really hits hard with me but for other reasons. Makes me think of my past that whole so hold me up now i can hold my own ground i dont need your help now makes me think of how i was let down and now i dnt need nobody but at the same time realize i still do need someone everyone needs someone even if they play it off well which i do myself . But yeah brings a tear 2 my eye .
In primary school we had the chance to choose one favortite track we know and play it on a CD in front of the class so every student could rate it. I remember choosing this one, not even fully understanding the lyrcis because I'm born in a country where we don't learn English in primary. I was like 9 years old, and now, 13 years later proud of my choice. Most of us didn't really understand the lyrics, but I felt this song was about something important. Hits me differently.

Same, dude. Rise Against was the favourite band of an ex-girlfriend, so I knew their most famous songs but I wasn't really eager to explore their discography... Turns out they make quite kickass music!
I was the same with so much music. Take it as a lesson, don't "dislike" any music you hear, give it a chance, doesn't matter the genre or the sound initially. I am not saying you will love everything you hear, but you may.. As well it may open your mind to so much more you never thought you liked, and give you amazing perspective! ❤
Same! I only just started really liking them a couple years ago. Audience of One was the first song that made me love them. Tim’s voice is incredible. For about 20 years no band has even came close to my favourite as Green Day is, but Rise Against did it, they are my two absolute favourites.

Better late than never right? These guys have a lot of amazing songs.
You should listen to savior
45. And been on their stuff...but yeah.
Satellite is my fav!!!!
Even guys in 30s they still would've listen to rise against including new albums too
You can feel the menssage louder and clearer than ever... This song still Rocks🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
My English teacher showed this to our class 1,5 years back. This was the song that got me into Rise Against.
I’m 11 years old and umm my teacher loves rise against and we play it in class all the time so now I listen to it at home as well while I sleep it’s kinda calming
Your teacher is amazing
I showed this to my middle-school students aswell, yet most of them didnt like it because its too "loud and aggresive" to them... And they didnt get the jist of it...Well more for me I guess 😁
You had an awesome english teacher
it's fucked teachers get paid so poorly to shout out to that teacher!
with recent events.... and future uncertain... this song feels more important than ever.
This song has so much symbolism in it. Good job 👍
you fucking idiot
this has been a reality for the past century's
Well hope the past 5 years since you commented have treated you well 😂
I always felt identified with this song from the point of view of my family starting to lose everything (job, house, and even the very family), and myself as a teenager having to fight harder than the rest to achieve anything I wanted.
Lyrics:
Warm yourself by the fire, son
And the morning will come soon
I'll tell you stories of a better time
In a place that we once knew
Before we packed our bags
And left all this behind us in the dust
We had a place that we could call home
And a life no one could touch
So don't hold me up now
I can stand my own ground
I don't need your help now
You will let me down, down, down!
Don't hold me up now
I can stand my own ground
I don't need your help now
You will let me down, down, down!
We are the angry and the desperate
The hungry, and the cold
We're the ones who kept quiet
And always did what we were told
But we've been sweating while you slept so calm
In the safety of your home
We've been pulling out the nails that hold up
Everything you've known
Don't hold me up now
I can stand my own ground
I don't need your help now
You will let me down, down, down!
Don't hold me up now
I can stand my own ground
I don't need your help now
You will let me down, down, down!
So open your eyes, child
Let's be on our way
Broken windows and ashes
Are guiding the way
Keep quiet no longer
We'll sing through the day
Of the lives that we've lost
And the lives we've reclaimed
Don't
Don't hold me up now
I can stand my own ground
I don't need your help now
You will let me down, down, down!
Don't hold me up now
I can stand my own ground
I don't need your help now
You will let me down, down, down!
Don't hold me up
(I don't need your help, I'll stand my ground)
Don't hold me up
(I don't need your help)
No! No! No!
Don't hold me up!
(I don't need your help, I'll stand my ground)

As an indigenous from Canada that left the reserve. This song fucking hurts. But is empowering.
We shouldn’t be forced to live in the reserves like they try to. Life outside, they make hard for you, half-brother. But we can’t succumb to their influence in either place.

+MrPatrickbuit same to you, Steins Gate.
That was perfect. Dream come true
The beginning of this song is so fucking solid. The rest of the song is great I just wanted to emphasize that the begining (with that guitar riff and the vocals) is perhaps the greatest I've heard on a song......like ever
The starting riff goes almost through the whole song though haha.

(Sometime between 2005 and 2008)
After seeing all the comments talk about the meaning of this song, this song is gonna hit much different the next time I play Guitar Hero 3…

Rise Against is the fucking soundtrack to 2020.
I can already picturing myself in an old folks home 60 years from now jamming to this in front of the nurses and them hearing it as "classical". Instantly I'll transform back to my 22 year old self.
Dear Rise Against... you guys were my favorite band in my teenage years.
Ten years later, you still are. ♥
This band has earned my respect!
Jibraeel Karim can I sub to you?
Err, yeah I guess. I'll sub to you too!
Jibraeel Karim deal!
Jibraeel Karim ok that should do it, 20th subbed!
Jibraeel Karim it only took you till 2017, fuckkkkk
Sending love!
In these days this song is more fitting than ever it seems. It's a shame really
Yeah hey son we left mother and daughter behind?
it has ALWAYS been fitting, since civilization began
Tad ironic most if not all of their instruments/pa was made overseas
@@avox2612 Not really. You can criticize society while also taking part in it.

yeah Power to The People are you gonna save those people like selohcin is doing?
yeah, same here...
Ive been playing this on repeat and every single time I cried
Great band! Great sound, amazing lyrics. A band ahead of its time...or right in it.
Those refugees also sexually assault the locals…
This song is soo good that gives me goosebumps.

When it gets going
Lyrically, The Sufferer and the Witness was their best album.
Savior? That song makes me cry
sean dye Savior was on ATR
Sean Kauder Sufferer and the Witness and Siren Song of the Counter-Culture are my two favorite Rise Against album
Still listening in 2020 like it just came out
Jiat found it so vibe with me
That why I'm here - some space wizard
Rise against has only become more relevant as the middle class has continued to shrink. Same with rage against the machine. Every year their music becomes more prophetic than it was when it was written.
I just find this song 🙂

"YOU WONT LET ME DOWN DOWN" *aggressively zooms on bananas*

It might have a dceeper meaning, but come on, be a human, have a sense of humor. Otherwise you'd have to whine at every comment under this vid.
@@TheRealDrae the meaning on the song is about the United States using immagrants for sweatshops and using their hope for a better life in the U.S. for cheap food trading

Rise Against is going to be dropping heat these next 4 years lmao
Democrats coming back 2028 and going to win
Rise Against was a huge turning point for me and one of the main catalysts of my political awakening and formation of my own views separate from what adults around me told me was right. I'm grateful for that. Siren Song of the Counter Culture and Sufferer and the Witness were essential albums.
what is wrong their early albums like Revolutions per Minute
Honestly, I used to listen to them when I was younger, thinking how they were so correct in their political views, but then I grew up and seen things, lived through things, got more wise. I still absolutely love the band and listen to it after all these years, I just don't find them to be correct on many things as far as politics go. Still, gonna scream every lyric and play every chord of their songs I can play - no issue, love them

That is actually how my brother found this band and he showed it to me and I really liked it ! :)
I can play it on actual guitar :D, I performed it once in a college talent show.
The message in this video is very powerful..i.don't see why the video gets disliked like it does
Because there is always at least 1% of people that don't understand :)
The vid gets dislikes because it is completely paradoxical in nature:
You have a song which is, broadly speaking, denouncing globalization and presumably, its effect upon US industries, its economies and the workers that support it.
Because some people don't like a certain genre of music. Shit happens.
Because the same people listen to nickelback
Chris Jayson I like nickelback and rise against, sue me
35 year old me looking back at the teen that use to rock this....man time flew i wish i could talk to that kid!

I felt that too
I was the same with so much music. Take it as a lesson, don't "dislike" any music you hear, give it a chance, doesn't matter the genre or the sound initially. I am not saying you will love everything you hear, but you may.. As well it may open your mind to so much more you never thought you liked, and give you amazing perspective! ❤
