StarTalk Podcast: Let’s Make America Smart Again - The Future of NASA
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 фев 2020
- Continuing with our Let’s Make America Smart Again series, we turn our attention towards NASA: where they’ve been, what are they’re doing now, and where they plan to go in the future. Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice answer fan-submitted Cosmic Queries about NASA and its endeavors with the help of Ellen Stofan, former chief scientist at NASA, who was a part of numerous interplanetary missions during her tenure and who specializes in planetary geology and volcanology.
You’ll hear Ellen’s thoughts on NASA’s global role in the future and how private/public partnerships will play out once humans colonize Mars and continue traveling deeper into the solar system. You’ll learn about NASA’s funding and how micro-increases in budget could drastically accelerate the process of getting humans to Mars and beyond. Get the details on possible plans for NASA to send missions to the inner planets. Find out if everyone is on board for a mission to Mars, and whether we should return to the Moon at all.
Our trio ponder the notion that the United States needs to be challenged, à la a Space Race, to provide a kick start to space exploration activities. Also find out where commercial space exploration will stake its claim in the solar system, and what the future holds for the International Space Station. You’ll also explore the growing problem of space junk and discover what NASA mission Ellen wanted to have greenlit that ended up being turned down.

Chuck is by far the best co host
Hmmm yeah. There is a couple others that i really like too though.
He’s not the best, but Neil gets comfortable around him.
@tommy aronson lol you think chuck is dumb, he is much smarter than the average youtube fan, even of this channel's audience
Eugene gets my vote. Laughing really keeps me plugged in and learning. Eugene makes me laugh every time
@@IamKnucks yaaaaaaaa. And one other guy i forget his name hmmmm
Imagine being in the background and just working like Neil and Chuck aren't filming Star Talk RIGHT in front of you
I give Dr Tyson and Chuck the credit of being earnest here, all jokes aside. It may be 3 year old but the sentiment is more current now than ever before. If you want to make America smart again, start at the top.
Neil just run for president already honestly
Got to love the seriousness of the people in the background being focused on their work while this amazing convo is taking place right in front of them...
America needs more focused people like that
"There's no episode of Star Trek where there's a time-delay between communication" @47:19
BUT THERE IS THOUGH!
Star Trek Deep Space NIne, Season 6, Episode 29 "The Sound of Her Voice"
I love the show. Love you all. I'm happy to throw down on some sci-fi anytime!
Chuck Nice 2024: Make America NICE Again!
i still think Make America Think Harder is more realistic and practical.
Yang2020 👍
Hey, I'd vote for him...but he's not gonna make the primary.
@@nothingtoseehere6142 vote for him IN the primary.
Lets start with make America think again.
@@reldies5364 maybe just "make America think", period, then we can build something from there
40:35 "cause we never landed there in the first place lol" I am weak lol🤣🤣🤣
I saw Neil and Chuck and instantly clicked. Don't need to see the topic...
Just need to listen. My new favorite podcast
im so thankful to have a president that knows and cares about how important space exploration is. he said that we were going back to the moon, and going to be the first nation to have a man on mars. a truly awesome time to be an american
Chuck, so funny this episode. Saving Neil one episode at a time.
imagine having a grandma like her ... it will be mind expanding
You are my personal Guru/Astrophysicist Dr.Tyson LOL . I always remember what you say about thinking about it before you do it or hear it or so, and thanks to your kind philosophy and knowledge it works. your time is very valuable to me and appreciate every second I can get.. Thank you Dr.Tyson least you care with a touch of humor and that's the kind of people I like and maybe trust
Make America Think Harder (MATH)
Eat Pickles And Mustard Pies All Day, Son (EPAMPADS)
I like Yang but he doesn't have a chance right now. He is about 20 to30 years too soon for UBI. I am not for UBI for everyone, there should be a income cap, it is designed to help poor people make ends meet and contribute to the economy.
@@Bradgilliswhammyman the whole point of UBI is that it's universal. No need for income monitoring or job status requirements. By funding it with a tax that hits the rich harder, it makes the whole policy progressive. The rich will pay much more into the system than they get out of it.
MATMH. Make America Think More Harder
@@Bradgilliswhammyman Considering the Family Assistance Plan, a UBI, was proposed and nearly passed twice in 1970, I'd argue it's way past due.
Thank you Neil for your factual corrections at 13:30. Thank you, Ellen for having and expressing this planetary awareness at 16:45.
I freaking love Star Talk..
oh yes the lies are so satisfying!!!
Blind
Love this startalk. Very funny, informative and educational
"I want everyone to be together... but I want to be the leader..."
Can someone please make a petition to increase NASA's budget to at least 5%
This program is sooooo important.
Much love to NDGT and kudos to Chuck to all the uncomfortable, but real moments.
Love the title for those segments! Thank you for some proper information.
When StarTalk comes to my notification bar, I can't help but to find time for Neil. . Thank you for all you do guys.
one of my favorite StarTalks
Love the Tshirt= “Earth is Round”....drop mic....
All 3 of these people are positively lovely.
Great talk! Thanks guys.
Very interesting stuff!!!
Nice one...
Amazing listening about, Ingenuity, after it has perfectly executed it's mission
very inspiring, there is hope!
Loved this episode
Nice Tshirt chuck
Thanks for trying to tell us what you know Chef.
chucks killing it on this one
"The Virgin America before America was a virgin."
Chuck, that was indeed nice!
Was America ever smart
BEFORE ? And if not, how can we make it SMART AGAIN ?
I think it would be better to have the caption . .
Let's just MAKE AMERICA
SMART ALONG WITH THE REST OF OUR FELLOW HUMANS ON OUR WORLD !
Or perhaps even better ,
LETS MAKE OURSELVES ALL GET SMART !
Love the program !
On average? America was probably never all that much smarter than other developed countries. I do think America had higher literacy in the late 18th century (early Republic) than other countries, though (people read the Bible a lot more than in other countries).
But also remember: the second half of the 20th century was absolutely dominated by American science. Look at all the Nobel laureates. And it's not just science - the social sciences too. An enviable record. We (all nations) should do more of that!
Sounds like we need a 'StarTalk Elon Musk edition'
YES PLEASE!
That would be fantastic!! Please make it happen!
I came for Neil. I stay for Chuck!😂🤩🥰
Loved when Neil corrected her 😎 when she said that we had always led 🤭
Specify Always: before 1776?
question---can entanglrd perticals be seperated then sent to eg mars and one left on earth be used for communication since they can act as ones and zeros like in computes (from there spin directions) possile
How does this only have less than 2k views.... this is amazing and so informative.
7:41 into the video I called my congressman requesting to cut defense spending and increase the NASA budget.
Because 56 million a day isn't enough
Well compared to the military budget at 1.75 billion per day..... No it's not i understand military brings us protection but we're standing still arming ourselves... It's like becoming a doomsday prepper armed and ready but not staying ahead technologically
@@ishe728 It IS like a doomsday prepper!
Now it's making more sense why that's been our policy. This country is FULL of idiots who think that way. Makes sense.
"Originally aired on September 22, 2017" damn star talk you keep trolling me with these re uploads!
Explains "Red Dragon"
Yea alot of reuploads lately but I'll still rewatch most of em. Good content.
The Master Bob117 I luckily hadn’t actually listened to that one yet so I enjoyed it 👌🏼
I think they cycle their videos about. They started doing it (again, possibly) while I was still making my way through their entire youtube video back catalog (edit: a year ago) and it completely cramped my style. I had to go back and figure out which dozen or so videos I hadn't seen that were moved from the end of the line to the front, and I'm sure there may even be one or two I'll never find that I've never seen - except this just proved it, because if this is truly from 2017, I don't remember seeing this one! Thought it was new.
Here I was wondering why they weren't in their big nice studio lol
The comment that AI would decide humans are bad for the planet reminds me of the show The 100. It would be really cool to see your opinion on what happened in that show!
As far as commercializing the moon, should we be putting anything on the moon when we rely on it's gravitational pull?
This was a fun talk 👽Hope to see more soon.
LMASA
Is it possible to set up multiple radio stations to cut down on the radio frequency time it takes to receive a signal.
nothing can go faster than the speed of light, its the physical limit of how fast a signal can travel, radio signals are a type of light, just not visible, light is the fastest known thing that exist so their is no way physically possible to get a signal to travel the distance no matter how powerful the signal is or how many times you relay it, infact the more times you relay it will induce even more latency due to having to capture, process the signal and relay it, so your better off having your original signal be strong enough to travel the distance without interruption for the fastest possible communication. even electricity can only travel at the speed of light, but usually slower in most materials, so radio is faster than a physical connection with a cable. The fastest cables on the market use fiber optics instead of electricity because the light can travel through the glass fiber faster and with less power than the same signal being sent through a copper cable .. but everything has limits
i absolutely love Chuck's Nasa Tee. My Uncle has been working for Nasa for years and If ANYONE knows where to buy this exact tee shirt, please let me know!!!!
"Lets make America smart again!"
Could really use some of that right about now...
So much
You mean... In right?
True. Could have also used some of it 4 years back when the opponent was a corrupt old witch.
@Harry Moorehouse What's good about Trump being acquitted? You've got half a senate full of brown-nosed idiots who don't know what laws are, and a POTUS who thinks that laws don't apply to him. Everything Trump and Guiliani claimed about the Bidens can be debunked easily with a Google search, and even if they DID have a legitimate reason to want to investigate the Bidens, there are LEGAL ways to do so that don't involve soliciting a foreign power to interfere with a political candidate!
The "Space Force" that everybody's getting all hyped for is nothing more than taking an already extant branch of the Air Force, and making it it's own branch of the armed forces. You're not going to be having dogfights in starfighters. It's all much ado about nothing.
@Harry Moorehouse Who are we fighting in space that justifies making the Air Force Space Command into it's own branch? It doesn't take a defeatist to see that this is nothing more than a boondoggle to grab attention while not getting anything new done.
If you want to make NASA great again, you need to stop making them change direction every time a new monkey takes the oval office. Bush wanted NASA to return to the moon. Then Obama said, "we've been to the moon, lets go to Mars!" Then Trump said, "Lets go back to the moon!" But not to be outdone, "But first, lets make a space station around the moon that serves a completely redundant function!"
If only multiple countries would contribute 0.4% into 1 space program, we would race ahead with benefits for all of us.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂
Problems exist to be solved!
Mars is no problem when we find out how to land and live there!
👽Thank you, it took awhile but I think I'm starting to get it.👽
51:07 InSight landed on Mars in late 2018 I thought
i wondered that too, apparently, "This episode originally aired on September 22, 2017.
" -see description
How LOVELY a thought is that, to stop building military equipment and fund science with all the savings! ❤️😍❤️
@1:43 in, Neil is like "You filmed that". Chuck has taught padawan well.
StarTalk is great I love the new segment - M.A.T.H -
Had to buy a shirt and sticker!
47:20 That is simply false. There are several episodes, mainly TOS-episodes, where it is mentioned that even with subspace communications, messages can take weeks to reach Starfleet from the Enterprise's current position. I believe this is said in i.a. season 1, episode 14: _Balance of Terror._
Several TNG episodes too.
Most of the Voyager-series...
Well your right but they don't show it in practice is what NDT was saying... It's one of those things that shows and movies can't be real or it would be very boring lol. We use our imagination that time has passed between communication.
Voyager was one that spoke about it the most, you know being stuck out in the Delta quadrant desperately trying to communicate with home.
I love the title of this :')
So if you had a entry proof space suit, and you were in space directly behind earths trajectory. What is the farthest distance you could jump (limited by you own ability to jump towards earth) from a structure to spacedive towards earth only being pulled by gravity and jump force you exerted, without being left behind by earths speed? How long would the fall/entry be until you landed? Both in space and earths atmosphere, Assuming you survive the friction?
what about quantum entanglement ? aren't there some applications or solutions for Space communication problems ?
Mom, I'm playing with science ! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
15:07 If they sent a train to Mars, would it be called the orbit express instead of the orient express?
Chuck Nice 2020
Why would the entry descent landing on Mars be more difficult than landing on the moon or the landing back on Earth as done by the Apollo missions to the moon and back?
I loved the very first question; "is NASA where NASA wants to be? Neil speaks for SO MANY who wish Americans spent MORE MONEY on NASA than the 0.4 % .We should be SPENDING at LEAST 1% of our GDP on space exploration.
Only 0.4 percent, that's crazy!
Is it possible to use quantum entanglement for real time communication over long distance?
Short answer: no. Nothing can travel faster than light, including information - even though two entangled particles can instantaneously collapse over long a distance.
Long answer: ruclips.net/video/0xI2oNEc1Sw/видео.html (you may have to watch it a couple of times if you're as 'smart' as I am 😅)
Why isn't there the iconic StarTalk music between segments? Budget cuts? Chuck's been embezzling funds to start his own show
Why not replace the solar panels in place or anything else on the space station, for that matter?Weight is the constraint on supplying the space station ,replacing each component as needed seems cheaper than letting the station crash and replacing it.
I wanna add Super in that slogan RIGHT before Smart.... MASSA 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yeah chuck nice 2020
"This episode originally aired on September 22, 2017."
took me a while to figure that out, i wondered why she talked about red dragon, and insight, and spacex launching humans next year.
I wish all video's and clips had original dates on them.
Let’s the knowledge flow
I love how chuck plays dumb sometimes, but he’s actually fucking smart as hell and very curious. He ads a really great aspect to this show and some of my favorite episodes have him on!!
Love. Love. Love.
Is it just me or was this StarTalk with Chuck Nice and comedic co-host Neil deGrasse Tyson, featuring Ellen Stofan X'D
I would love to see a show on artificial gravity
They have one
"America has always led!" LOL!
there is an i missing in LIED
MATH = make america think harder. #yanggang
I've been hearing its not math, but it is maths
Yang2020
Yang never did the math. UBI = giving well-off people money. It makes no sense.
"You filmed that"?!! 🤣🤣🤣
I like your meteorites is my new pick up line.
Dude ladys first!
I was glad to here her discuss the money we spend going into the economy. I worked on Orion Subcontracts and cannot begin to explain how good it was to see our hard earned tax dollars being spent intelligently at US manufacturers who were all in on the mission.
Edit: Grammar
Chuck Nice they call it stenching the gas.
Love you guys!!
CHUCK MUST GO
50:00 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'm in!
I've been thinking for so long how the space station isn't exactly practically and ergonomically designed, it's like a tree branch. For being such a epicenter of great minds that is NASA it surely is a very inconvenient design. And why haven't we replaced it yet with a more modern and well thought out space station with instead of arms with solar panels pointing everywhere there's platforms and surface areas with solar panels like on the ground or on roofs? Instead of astronauts moving through long pipes the structure is more of a multiple floor/store building etc. Would also make it less rigid like when moving it it too fast wouldn't look like a branch rustling in the vind. With a more solid design it can be moved with less caution and consideration for it's fragility = faster. Make it more comfortable for the astronauts working there, better layouts, everything looking more clean, polished, new hardware and software, more efficient instrument to read and use, better markings and navigation for what is where... I'm talking a next generation station for the next 50 years. That thing is old, in constant need of repairs and replacements. It's time to make it a better representation and reflection of todays ambitions, visions, standards and technological capabilities.
And btw wouldn't it be faster for communication and signal commands like from a remote controller by having antennas or such a long the way to boost transmission speeds?
I hope to see Ellen's boat idea for the seas of Titan come true. Why does everything to the outer solar system take 20 years to plan and send... Voyager took 3 years to get to Saturn, do that with the next launch to Saturn!
45:29 Quantum Communication is how you fix it
29:40 iss dance
We can just also build a second ISS for mars
MISS (Mars International Space Station)
Look at all those people just walking by and lounging around. Why aren't they freaking out that NDT is RIGHT there!?
Rumble!
Bring back the sideburns NGT
I’d love to see chuck and Kevin hart have a conversation 😂
If you had just won the current powerball jackpot of $70 million, and you were going to use that to fund one space mission, what would it be? Any current mission or would you generate a new one entirely?
Can we get a Neil Tyson meets Mike Tyson episode!?!?!? I'm sure he has some great questions for you.
And some serious punchlines.
I watched the people in the background that whole time.
Is it possible to use a craft? Like the shuttle coming into our atmosphere. On Mars. Something like an airplane.
If the ISS is having to avoid debris, wouldn't it be worth fitting it, and any future space stations, with something to collect that debris. At least we'd be making in roads in clearing it up as we're creating it.
