    Have never seen anyone use chalk to designate a bolt has been torqued. That's a good tip. Thanks old mechanic!

    Thanks for the great video(s) I've learned a lot from you. Filling the oil filter before installing and filling the reservoir is something I always like to do. Also, I always check to make sure the gasket on the old oil filter is removed prior to installing the new one - having forgotten to do so in the past. 2010 R1200GSA in Canada - Cheers!

      Hi Dave, you are so right.. normaly I do that too but due to camera position..etc I totaly forgot doing that too.. What a newby huh LOLLLL

    • @motocomfort_de
      @motocomfort_de 2 года назад +1

      Hello Dave, if the engine and the oil are cold, the bypass opens and the oil doesn't pass the filter to reach the moving parts much quicker. So here it's not really useful to pre-fill the oil filter. At the LC, the oil filter ist installed on the left side. It's impossible to pre-fill it. 😎 That's the reason why you have to fill up the 300ml oil for the oil filter after starting the engine and let it run for a few minutes like BMW garages do.
      It's much more important to do the oil change when the engine is on temperature.

    Thank you for your exhaustive explanation. what kind of oil viscosity do you recommend for hotter climates? +110f weather or +43c

  • @bart-jandelhaas1329

    Manual states 15w50. The oil you prefer is available in 15w50. Why do you use 10w40? Great video btw👍🏻

      Not a problem to use the 10w40 oil👍

    • @binbinlele1041
      @binbinlele1041 2 года назад +2

      10W40 is common for colder circumstances. The BMW dealerships also switched from 10W40 to 15W50. Look at the schedules and see what the maximum temperatures are for the 10W40 and the 15W50. You're engine doesn't like 10W40 in the hotter temperatures. The 10W40 is getting too thin then.

    Mr Old Mechanic, I'm the one who also performs routine maintenance on my GS-1200 (2012, air cooled). It caught my attention that you use an engine lubricant with specification for submerged clutch motorcycles, couldn't you also use a good lubricant for vehicles with a dry clutch?, thanks for your attention.

      Hi Ze, I am sure that there are good oils for a Beemer outthere. I am using this Castrol oil for my own and my family their Beemers, and never ever had a oil related problems with the bikes you know. When I look at my own R1200GS who is now running for over 42.000 km (bought it on 19.000 km) with this Castrol oil and the oil consumption of my Beemer is very low, and I have no oil related problems with my bike. So I think: Never change a winning team huh.

    Hallo, deze video's in de Jip en Janneke taal, zoals je het zelf omschrijft, zijn top en voor veel mensen een prima leidraad. En niet alleen voor de hobbiest. Kan je, mag je, een suggestie geven waar je Belgische buur vlot online BMW onderdelen en onderhoudsproducten kan bestellen. Bedankt, je hebt er een extra fan bij 😉

      Anywhere in the window is good. Most of us fill them to near the top of the window because more is betterer. You will not over fill it.

    I am in the desert of Saudi Arabia and the temperatures are very high. What is the appropriate oil? Is it 10w40 or 20w50?

      Hi when the temperature never drops below 0C / 32F then 20w50 can be a good choise too 😉

    Hello, I just purchased a 2016 1200 GS. I bought it with a fresh oil change. I just noticed that the level is a little bit too high all the way to the top of the circle. If I tilt the bike over slightly I can see the level. Should I just leave it alone or should I drain some? That is the question? Thank you

    Hoi het filter lijkt aardig vast te zitten, gewoon doordrukken of is er een subtielere manier?

  • @bigcountrysoverlandadventu7697

    @theoldmechanic hopefully I can get some suggestions from you. I have a 2009 1200 GSA with about 44k on it. It has been sitting for at least 4 years. (I know, I know😖) I am going to sell it and I wanted to see if you could share your tips on what to watch out for, what fluids to change other than gas, obviously, and a fresh battery. It was serviced before it got buried in the garage. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Or if you have an email that we would be better suited for this type of information, please advise.

    Hey Old Mechanic - does this bike require any fork maintenance?

  • @williampollock99

    Hi The Old Mechanic
    I have a 2010 GS1200, it has been layed up for about 3-4 years. Fired it up 6 weeks ago, to save money 🤣 thought I would do a services get it MOTed and back on the road.
    Changed engine/gearbox oil and plugs. siphoned old fuel from tank. Completed the service and the bike did not start. The GS turns over I have checked one plug for a spark, it's weak. I can not smell any un burnt fuel via the exhaust.
    Question :- using Motoscan I used the fuel pump actuator on/off. First checked voltage going into the to the voltage regulator OK,
    Checked the connection directly on to the pump 12VDC. I can not hear the pump making any noise.
    What should I hear any help would be great. Don't now if you could do a dummy test for me and describe what you hear 🧐

    • @TheOldMechanic
      @TheOldMechanic  2 года назад

      Hi, when you activate the fuel pump with the Motoscan app you should hear a whining sound, it should be clear to hear

      Hi Mr B, thanks for subscribing. I am not sure if its a good plan to mix those different oil viscosity together. IF it was my bike I won't do that, just be on the save side you know.

    Thank you. I also started doing this. When the season hits I ll empty my tank and start revising the fuel filter as something with the hevel and fuel filter is causiing 5-7 liters in the tank not being used (adventure model). I ll have to do this procedure, probably anyway: ruclips.net/video/xdyHT3pGm_A/видео.html. If you're interested in making a vid let me know :-)
