Lol! The part about the book bending was a riot. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your nerdiness. However, you'd cringe at the way I read. I read my books rough - one of the first things I do is bend the spine. I doggy ear, highlight and gloss 'em. That way they know I truly care, haha! I genuinely apologize to those who feel uncomfortable with my rather barbaric reading habits. Book nerds FTW!

I love your personality! I really enjoyed this video and found myself relating and shaking my head a loud to a lot of what your said. I was also hesitant for a long time to break the spine now it doesn't bother me. I also agree that I don't view reading as a sport and that it stays something I enjoy and love and not a competition; that I enjoy and "sit" with each book. As someone who read all while growing up into high school and stopped reading in college.. just wrapped up in classes and somehow it got pushed back. Now in my 3rd year of graduate school I have rediscovered my love for reading (& found booktube) and I pace myself. Never had a book journal but I love that idea. Def will try that out!

I really enjoyed this video because you talked about reading as a writer. It's fun watching book videos, but it's really neat to see a book tuber talk about books and the craft.
I have no problem marking up and using sticky notes for nonfiction books. I never did it for fiction until recently. It feels strange but reading as a writer, I love preserving those well crafted sentences by underlining and using sticky notes.
I like used books too, so a cracked spine and some wear and tear doesn't bother me that much.

Your videos are always so interesting and engaging to watch. I'm so glad I found your channel this year, you're definitely one of my favourites. :)
It's funny about you folding back the cover of your books. I have weak finger muscles, so it's never comfortable to read like that, the pages always start slipping. I do break the spine while reading, but I just open the book more without folding back the cover. The only time I read while barely opening the book like you showed, is when I borrow people's books...which is why I tend not to ask other people to read theirs...it's too stressful trying to keep the book in absolute pristine condition.

I always make a TBR list and NEVER stick to it. I can't come to terms with picking books ahead of time because I never know what I will feel like reading. I also have a bad habit of forgetting books on my Kobo. Thanks for you video and the tips you gave. I also have a book journal and love it!!

  • @CulturaPA

I usually add TBR books to my Amazon wish list. It's not to say that I will definitely purchase the book from Amazon, although a great deal of my reads I download onto Kindle For Mac app, but rather so that I have a central place that I can always check to see what to read or purchase next. When I learn of a book that I want to add or read next, I usually get so excited and I don't want to forget about the book, so this definitely helps. Also, I get great book recommendations from you and your channel. I'm currently reading, "Did You Ever Have a Family" by Bill Clegg, a suggestion that I got from you and one that I'm loving. I'm loving how the characters all are woven together, intricately tied to each other in some way or form. Thanks for the recommendation and love your channel! God Bless!

I actually laughed out loud when you finally folded back the cover! Freedom! haha :) I don't usually bend back the cover, but I don't mind breaking the spine, so I will open it as wide as I need to. I'm a mood reader too, but I been thinking about trying TBRs again. I realized that sometimes I can't decide what I want to read after finishing a book, which means that I go days without reading anything. I've been thinking that if I have a TBR list of books that may want to read, it might help me narrow down the selection. I do have an overall TBR list on Goodreads, but I'm thinking more of a TBR of books I want to read in the near future. I don't have a book journal exactly, but I do jot down notes immediately after I finish a book, and sometimes as I'm reading the book.

Loved this video. I was that kid, too. I vividly remember sitting in the corner on my blue beanbag chair, plowing through the Narnia series and Matilda, struggling to keep the spine and cover unbent. LOL. But now I don't care. I feel like paperbacks were invented for that reason- for readers to dig into the book, snuggle up and get comfy with it.
I think my process is similar to yours, albeit not as strict (lol). I allow the book and my feelings about the book to dictate how I read it. Some books I automatically start highlighting and writing in the margins, while others I just read straight through sans notation. I love the idea of a book journal; I've never been consistent in journaling, but what you suggested seems easy enough, so I think I'm going to try it out.
You should think about (as a continuation of this video) sharing some tips on how to get through difficult books, or perhaps how to get the most out of one's reading experience.
I have a question: how often do you reread books? Better yet, how much time do you let pass before revisiting a title?

I have always loved reading books and am reading one right now, but, I always keep getting distracted for the first couple of pages. I can't just dive into the book right away. Do you ever have that problem and if so, can you make a video on what you do to help you get concentrated? P.S. This was so interesting to watch- the book journal is such a great idea. I'm terrible with paperbacks, I snap the spines, bend the pages, highlight, write in them in whatever pen I have to hand, read them in the rain, leave them on the bus, just treat them terribly, but if I like a book I will always try to get a hardcover copy, which I take much better care of!

I honestly don't ever have a TBR. I finish a book then think hmmmmm what am I in the mood for next....think of a genre then stand in front of my bookcase and pick a book from that genre that I have chosen. I went from reading Me Before You to Rich Bitch. I think I'm going to start keeping a book journal, especially since I have so many book I would like to read this year. This was another great video

I can't think of myself writing annotations in a book. Dog ear pages is something I don't particularly like either. Anything can be used as a book mark. There's no call for bending the pages. But I do like your honesty on how you read a book and where books lie in your TBR list. When reading becomes a goal in itself. It's time to catch your breath.

I can relate so much to what you said about reading as a writer. Sometimes I get rather tired of myself for not being able to just *read* and not notice the craft-aspects that I like or dislike and there are even times when I long to go back to the way I read before I became a writer.
And (if I may), a recommendation for your translated-works-read: Jenny Erpenbeck, The End of Days which won the Independent Foreign Fiction Award this year. (I was born in Germany, so I tend to try and promote translated works of German authors, sorry about that!). I would get totally OVERWHELMED and even ANXIOUS about starting a new book and prob would never end up reading it. Lol 😂 I wish I could be THAT dedicated to reading that doing all of that would continue to be fun like it is for you. 😄 I have OCD just like you, so I can see all of those things becoming my new obsessive habit. So I def have to be careful about creating habits and how important those habits become for me to follow. 😅
