I have similar memories from a near feral childhood on the Cornish coast in the sixties and seventies. There wasn't much money about but I never felt deprived in any way and would not change anything if I had the chance to live it again. I remember my mother opening a 'book' at the local butchers in January, so that she could start paying in for the next Christmas feast in advance. My memories are filled with hard working fishermen and labourers and tradesmen with hard hands and quick smiles, of mazes of tiny backstreet cottages filled with aproned aunties and uncles and cousins, most related by blood, but many who were not. Of excitement at finally being old enough to go to sea on weekends and holidays on one my extensive families working boats to begin my training before reaching an age that contained more than a single numeral. Of chores that were to be done above all else, prior to engaging in any of my many interests; all of which seemed to involve sand or boats or water. I remember working packing mackerel for hours at night in the winter after school at the local fish market and the pride I felt when I handed my fat pay packet over to my mother, and the look on my dad's face when he told me that I had brought home more money than him that week. I was about twelve at that time. I wouldn't change a thing. Self obsession, social media, lies and manipulation seem to be the order of the day now and sometimes I am glad that I am quite old. Lovely ride again; thank you.
Dave, you are able to verbalise what we all feel and observe. I’m hugely grateful for how I was brought up and as I get older appreciate it more. Our local Lammermuir hills are very similar to your Yorkshire hills. They have a real healing and resetting power. One particular part I’ve always felt really comfortable just going and having sit had unknown history. As wee children on a Sunday, mum n dad, granny n grandad on their bantam would go for picnic and bit of fishing. I could never find that exact spot in my head. When mum died 2019 ,a photo surfaced, me about 3 yr old and my gran n grandad on bantam( with superb pannier racks) and I could see location. Wow it is now under the whiteadder reservoir and that’s how I couldn’t locate it. Yet for just on 50 years I’ve been going to same spot and enjoying the peace it brings. I got similar feeling from your wee film and chat today. Thanks Dave, don’t stop! Neil
So true. I'm 60 tomorrow and have no regrets about getting older because I too remember a genuinely better era. Many of your reflections are echoed by my own and yes, simpler WAS better. Ride safe mate.
Happy Birthday mate🎉 I‘ll be 77 tomorrow, and still enjoying many rides on my beautiful Bonnie T120 here in Switzerland, and of course neighbouring Austria, Germany and Italy😀😀😀
A great reflection of life and not surprising considering the beautiful natural landscape. I live in Poole, Dorset, it used to be a beautiful place, yet now ruined by greed. Traffic congestion is amongst the worse in the country. I use a motorbike and skirt around the metal boxes that surround me and eventually escape the confines of the now large urban area. The motorcycle allows us to feel free again and ride without hindrance. It makes my time here on earth far more pleasurable. It's great to hear your philosophical words, we are all a part of the collective consciousness, we are all one 🙏
Your words are true enough I grew up in Oxfordshire England in the 60s and 70s. And now I live in America. Which in the last ten years has become ugly beyond belief. As I ride the roads and lanes here in Connecticut I too get philisophical about life and the world we now live in. I am so grateful for my ability to do so. And determined not to fall into the pettiness, hatred and derision I see in the world and around me constantly. Stay safe everyone and stay sane.
I completely agree with you,we grew up in what was considered a posh village near york,so we were thought of well to do,but Dad held down 3 jobs to pay the mortgage & give us a great life without having much spare money, but we were generally happy. Nowadays even as I approach retirement, life is stressful, earnings never seem to keep up with life. A time machine back to childhood, now that I would relish.
Fully agree Dave, born in the mid 50's, lived in foreign lands during my formative years, fantastic broad experience of life in general but sadly from the 80's onwards we seem to have become obsessed with a 'want it now' culture rather than work, save and appreciate what we achieve. I used to manage with our few TV channels in the days when you could rely on the media to be honest with us and for politicians to have some moral fibre and backbone, great times were had, never to return in my lifetime I fear. Ride safe and thanks for the thougt provoking vlog.
Nagh add on another 15 yr ,I was simple for life like y9ureself I noticed what dave is talking about around the time of the phone pc tablet ,disconnected society
Thanks for this Dave. I totally agree. I was born in 1952 and like many others from those times my memories are of simpler, more austere times which nonetheless seem, in hindsight so much more enjoyable than these grim days. I have to congratulate you on your dialogue and thoughts Dave. You are an excellent wordsmith, and if you had chosen to, I think you may have been an excellent author. I guess we just have to try and navigate this messed up world as best we can and try and keep our sanity and patience to the fore, although that seems to get more difficult as time goes on. Cheers Dave, all the best. 🙏
Beautiful Dave. I too was born in the sixties and I'm approaching 61. I've come to honestly believe, that the values I was taught, the understanding of right and wrong and the belief in our opportunities in life being entirely dependent on hard work are basically incompatible with today's society.
The underlying issue with us humans in my mind is greed. Not all of us are guilty of this but a significant amount, usually those close to power because its there where the greedy seek fortune. you are in the right place riding across beautiful yorkshire.
As my dear old mum would have said, you are proper cheerful Charlie Chester this morning, but I must admit you are bang on, I'm certainly glad I'm not growing up in this day and age.
My grandfather thought the world had gone to hell in the 60’s, my dad thought the same in the 80’s and now it’s our turn. It’s a natural part of getting old to think life was better in our youth. Nostalgia and the certainty of outcomes make past times appear very safe and secure - like watching an old film again. Youngsters today will look back on now as a golden era.
Beautifully and succinctly put Dave! Having grown up in the same decaying Yorkshire mill town at the same time as you, I can identify with all of that. Things really did begin to change in the early eighties. Dear oh dear. Ride safe bruv. Dave (N. Yorks)
I always thought that I had a way with words, but I bow to a Master. An excellent discourse and so very true. I'm 77 and thank God that I'm still fit enough to ride my R E in the beautiful Shropshire and Wales countryside.
I was born in 1969. I was a child in the 70's and grew up in the 80's and 90's. They were simply better times. No iffs or buts. They were better. I worry for my kids. But when the time comes for me to go, I will know I lived during the best times in this country. As I get old I'm appreciating the simpler things more and more. I just want a simple life again.
Great videos and information I'm 67 and in California and just found you a week ago and subscribed love to see the country side on your different motorcycles keep up the great 👍 videos thank you! PS. miss the simple days when I started riding motorcycles in 1975 and those awesome motorcycles!
Thank you for this, beautifully expressed and perfectly right. I too remember all this, but as a Lancastrian I’d never be so poetic and don’t have as much nice countryside to film 😉 . Seriously though thank you for the pause to think and reflect.
Dave, I miss those days too. The flute gave some magic to the creek footage.) I managed to take a nice ride on top of the old Appalachian mountains during peak fall color. It was magical!
Wonderful ramblings. Like you, I'm not too happy to suddenly find myself knocking 70, but so glad I lived through those sweet, sane years. And without being able to escape on my bikes and ride those very same roads, I reckon I'd be gibbering in a padded cell by now.
Easy credit did a lot to spoil the natural balance of work and reward. My Mum has always proudly told me that she has never owed anybody a penny and even though we did without in the sixties and seventies, we were never without the important things - shelter, food and loving support - all that really matters in the end.
Really enjoyed that video Dave , im 65 now & remember those times well, I feel for my grand kids as they will never know the fun & friendships we enjoyed as kids, great video & lovely scenery , keep them coming 👍
Beautiful roads which I have often ridden in the past. Your commentary on values I found agreeable. Ride in the beauty, think for yourself, act for others. 🏍️
Good Morning Dave , What a beautiful place this takes me back to riding around Northumberland back in the 70's on my Suzuki 250 ( happier days tbf ) take cafe
I guess I'm of a similar age to you and many others on here, so can relate to what you say. Yes life was much grounded in what was really important and there was a defined moral structure that is all but lost today. It was not perfect and there was plenty wrong, but there was an acceptance of what was right and wrong. Personally, I believe we were living in the 60s and 70s at the end of a society solidly built on Christian ethics and influence. The rapid decline we have seen is a result of a rejection of that truth since then. Some would argue with this and point to the corruption in the institutional churches. But I'm not talking about organised religion, but the true basic teaching of Christ and His gospel! Some might say alternative religions are the way gorward, but history does not support that. Only the countries where the Christian gospel has been the main infulence are countries that have prospered and fostered freedom over the centuries. The decline of the West is due to the removal of our Christian foundations.
Fully agree with you, totally nailed it! Your most eloquent and thought provoking vlog since your 'eve of war' one! When you put out a 'serious one', you do it so well! 👍
I was born in the early 60's, that was the start of ordinary people stopping being poor. I remember being bathed in a metal tub in front of a real fire, playing in the coal bunker yet my parents doing "normal" jobs ended up in a large detached house in a good area having had no financial help. People my age benefit hugely from their generation. I really do think we were blessed, viable 2 wheeled transport at 16, a real motorbike at 17, we grew up far quicker than today's kids who are still studying something pointless till their mid 20's with a pile of convoluted obstacles in the way of actually becoming an adult, getting a car/bike license, buying property etc etc.
A good video filled full of good wisdom. I would definitely agree with you that the best days are behind us. My childhood years were the 50's & 60's, so I might have a little more perspective yet. In my humble opinion, I would say that thing began to turn to shit in the 1990's when technology begin to get a good foothold. There is lot's more that I could add, but I think I'll leave it here. Have a beautiful day! Cheer's!! Thanks for the great ride in your neck of the woods.
Having red through the comments there is nothing I can add, I can only agree with it all, only today I was talking with a good friend from shool about the same thoughts as yours. The best thing in my life has always been motorcycles , the places they take you and people you meet riding them. Keep up the good works
Well said, I'm 72 next birthday and was beginning to feel out of step with the rest of the world, hearing this helps me realise other people feel the same. I still find getting the bike out and going for a ride helps me relax in a better place 👍
Poetic reflections and ponderings upon our existence; I can only concur. It is truly only in the wild and remote regions of the lands we live in, that we feel the awe of our connection to it ALL. The inevitability of progress and it's headlong rush towards apparent insanity is only tempered by the quiet of the wild. Thank you for your beautiful words, however unsettling in our current circumstance.
There were a Couple of world wars a lot of the The Young men Left that Landscape for The western Front Never to Return The Past is not Always as Rosy as it's Portrayed
Very thoughtful & very deep and also very true ! Born 1956 life was simple but very honest , we all worked and was rewarded at the end of the week with our pocket money for errands run and getting the coal in and various jobs to help ! Great days and would go back in a heartbeat !😊🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴
Yeah the western world is getting silly. I live in Co.Durham near Teesdale and Weardale. I go to both of those places on either my motorcycle or my bicycle. I love the wide open spaces and the sheer beauty of the landscape. It's fantastic. I do not have to put up with silly people where I live, things are the same as they have been for many years. We have community here and people look after each other. They share the same values and have things in common. CULTURE IS SHARED! This is my home. You can keep your cities and urban sprawl.
Steady on mate! Didn't realise you are a poet! I want to meet you and listen to you. I agree completely but could never express myself as eloquently as you do.
Your motorcycle rides always remind me of the tv show All Creatures Great and Small. I loved that show! Some day i will have to fly over and rent me a bike just so i can ride through the Yorkshire Dales...so much history over there🍻
Trade offs. Balance. Yin and Yang. Some things have got better, other things have become worse. What you say is true of my childhood in the sixties and the changes in society. However, I would prefer to be in the present day with all its disadvantages but especially if I was: disabled; from an ethnic minority; LGBT; cancer patient; heart attack victim; in a car accident; domestic abused, and many other things. Win some, lose some.
Agreed we are led by greed and stupidity and seeing through all the propaganda and lies make those that realise this are lambasted and ridiculed .It if it wasn't the fact that we have the release of our countryside and transport to help us free our minds I think life were to depressing to live ,unfortunately those that wish the future we are heading toward are trying to stifle this release .So this in mind time for a new bike and head to the dales
Thanks Dave.....bought flooding back happy childhood memories. Born in a two up two down house in a small coal mining village. Learned to write my name on the inside of a frosted bedroom window, ran to granny's house on a sunday dinner time to eat the skin off her rice pudding, played in the pit yard and got my backside kicked off the Colliery copper many times.........and grew up to respect and listen to elders. Oh how times have changed.........and not for the better.
Rear Puncture a few weeks ago, bugger, bugger very annoying, a waste of MY time and effort. looking back, it was a pleasure to repair a tube the old way, using tyre irons (Hands on honest graft), a step back to a better time. A reminder of ones past and simple lessons learnt, passed down the generations father to son. It was a far better time when we repaired and made good (Recycled) ....... could have gone to quick fit 🙂🙃
Looking at the comments here has been uplifting. We certainly are not alone. We recognize basic truths in spite of the lies of the matrix. Great video! (Watched twice).
Hindsight only comes to those that lived a life, and every generation laments the passing of there landscape of existence as see through their own eyes.
My word how eloquently hitting the nail squarely on the head.my thoughts on modern life society and the head long rush to self gratification and success judged on chattels of transient worth .I too am a child of the 60s -70s 👍
Time and progress, at least what some people define as progress, marches on relentless and unstoppable. The early days of my youth in the sixties were filled with simple pleasures and realistic goals. My how times have changed. In my the sunset of my life I find myself dealing with a more complex way of life that is somehow less fulfilling and more stressful. Riding my motorcycles gives me a brief rekindling of those more calm days of yore and a brief respite from todays multi facetted troubles, both personal and societal.
i am of similar age and background as yourself and also look wistfully back on my early life in the North of England with fondness.. however, are we just typical... every generation surely thinks the world is going to pot! we have been fortunate in living in a peaceful affluent democratic little country, which was forced to change because it had to... because the world is forever changing..
Such wise words, I miss sitting on the doorstep at 10pm with my grandmother and just listening 🎧 to the chatter of older people and watching the bats .. did we cause our own mental health problems, to a degree? Putting so much pressure on ourselves.. we destroyed the nucleus of the family from wanting bigger and better... And are we happy with that, no, we want more, children palmed off, marriages breaking down.. and living in a nanny state, that it's not our fault or responsibility it's someone else's ❤❤ love to us all 🎉 and btw, no offence ment ❤
Absolutely spot on…..and watching the bats that is a fond memory though for me it was mainly starlings in the centre of Bradford but still very fond memories….it’s largely a matter of knowing when to stop wanting more as you say 🙂👍🏻
"Malign propaganda from all around", that is where it all goes wrong..... Thought provoking views and in my case all are as I recall those much better and contented times.
My dear Dave, how eloquent you are. Your opening remarks so well expressed with a panoply of vocabulaire tell a tale of the implosion of Western civilisation. I am 72 and well remember better days when people were more polite, courteous and respectful to each other. We're all going down the gurgler ....
“Consciousness sleeps in minerals, dreams in plants, stirs in the animal, and awakens in man.” Attributed to? Ibn Arabi Rumi Pythagoras The real question for me is - where does one’s consciousness reside? Thanks Dave for your thoughts and visuals 👍
@ Yep, consciousness, I think, is apart from the physical, but essential for physical life. A template that we briefly inhabit perhaps. I need more coffee 😂
Hi dave i was born in the 50s so I know exactly what you mean never has truer words been said mate really enjoy the video's mate ride safe mate chat again soon dave
Well Dave very philosophical, but alas as I approach my 70th year with speed I have to be with you on these thoughts, my father n mother had a small holding in NW Lancashire, we had nowt my dad drove a lorry from preston to Lincolnshire, a two day return journey, returning home on his BSA Dbd 34, we had nowt and wanted for nowt, I sometimes thing and feel a bit guilty that I have helped make this throw away, thoughtless society, and I do feel a guilt, 3 boys that are too busy with their own lives visit only every other month, but me and the wife are lucky owe nowt nice final salary pension and state one also, so the dales and the lakes are a solitude for us with our butties n flask of tea or cofffee, thanks for the reflection Dave, take care
You’re exactly right my friend. I believe that the more we pushed God away in evil was let in and evil used the universities the media and the government to take hold and prevail. God bless you, brother. I truly enjoy your content.
Good morning Dave, you are absolutely right. Yes, you live in an impressive area. But did you see/feel that 30 years ago? I think its a benifit of age. I live in an area south of the Ruhrgebiet, that was always hectic. So life was always hectic. But we did not realize it, we always were in a hurry, long working days and hectic holidays. Yes, up to the begin of 90th there seamed no problems. Then the reunion of Germany started and everything started to change ( not the fault of the people in the East!). The politics changed to the negative side and life got much more hectic and people got more aggressive. That aggressive style found its top in C times. Personally I had a package of 2 burn outs (totally wriong description). So now I am nearly 63 and try what you try to do. Riding, slowing down, but not too much thinking. Ups...Story too long. We are only a sandcorn and maybe we can change world a little bit onto the better side. Stay healthy, enjoy your life and be carefull with the world, its chaotic enough.
Very thought provoking and I fully agree. However, back in the 50's/60's I remember there being much more misogyny, homophobia and racism. The rot really set in during the Thatcher years where greed was celebrated.
I have similar memories from a near feral childhood on the Cornish coast in the sixties and seventies. Quite right Philip there’s something of an “ as little work for as much reward” attitude
The underlying issue with us humans in my mind is greed. Not all of us are guilty of this but a significant amount, usually those close to power because its there where the greedy seek fortune. you are in the right place riding across beautiful yorkshire.

Wonderful ride this morning. I agree whole hartilly with the monolog.Im 72 now and looking around wonder where it will all end. Take care.
Excellent video and your reflections are so true.

“In life there is conflict and grief in the Urban Grind, but there is Peace and Wisdom in the wild” - Agree 100% - 🙏🏻
Very reflective again today Dave & very true. I feel very privileged to have experienced such times myself & remember them fondly in this crazy world.
Hi Dave, so pleased to hear you at your philosophical best this morning, keep it up. Regards from Norfolk, Roy.
Cheers Roy I have my moments occasionally 😊🙏
Really enjoyed that video Dave , im 65 now & remember those times well, I feel for my grand kids as they will never know the fun & friendships we enjoyed as kids, great video & lovely scenery , keep them coming 👍

Fully agree with you, totally nailed it! Your most eloquent and thought provoking vlog since your 'eve of war' one! When you put out a 'serious one', you do it so well! 👍
Thank you sir😎👍
Very true indeed I think the boomers/gen x represent the pinnacle in that regard
Thank you Larry and you’re welcome
'Reality' TV is anything but! In my 79 years society around the world has changed hugely, but not for the better.
Having red through the comments there is nothing I can add, I can only agree with it all, only today I was talking with a good friend from shool about the same thoughts as yours. The best thing in my life has always been motorcycles , the places they take you and people you meet riding them.
Keep up the good works
Well said TBW and put so eloquently as always. Thank you for another great video 👍
Cheers Ian 👍🏻
Thank you for those kind comments 😎👍🏻
Nice one Dave. 👍
There were a Couple of world wars
a lot of the The Young men Left that
Landscape for The western Front
Never to Return The Past is not
Always as Rosy as it's Portrayed
Very true and we owe it to them never to forget that freedom comes at a price
Fantastic video and thoughts 👍
Cheers buddy 👍🏻
It started with Thatcher.. "There is no such thing as society". Well, here we are..
That was October 1987, it started way before then, Thatcher just threw fuel on the fire.
Thatcher got elected in 1979 ,that's when the rot started.
Never a truer word Roy….you are lucky 👍🏻
Brilliant reflection ❤ I am also a person of that past era ... simple and respectful 🙏
Steady on mate! Didn't realise you are a poet!
I want to meet you and listen to you. I agree completely but could never express myself as eloquently as you do.
Thank you sir and give me a shout if you’re ever in the area👍🏻
Hit the nail on the head with this -excellent
Thank you Brian 👍🏻
Your words are very true and I think most of the people in the UK feel the same.
What road are you on please, it looks really nice.
Road from Halton Gill to Stainforth
Wow, another gem from the Bingley Aristotle, and so true. I wonder, though, if in 50 years time, the 2020s will be remininsced in a similar way?
Thank you and yes I’m sure they will be 😎
Unlikely, there won't be much left after WW3.
Your motorcycle rides always remind me of the tv show All Creatures Great and Small. I loved that show! Some day i will have to fly over and rent me a bike just so i can ride through the Yorkshire Dales...so much history over there🍻
You’ll be very welcome David hope to see you some day
Amazing words thanks for putting so much feeling in to the video ❤
You’re most welcome
Trade offs.
Yes the greed is all consuming thank God for our liberty
Thanks Dave.....bought flooding back happy childhood memories.
Born in a two up two down house in a small coal mining village.
Learned to write my name on the inside of a frosted bedroom window, ran to granny's house on a sunday dinner time to eat the skin off her rice pudding, played in the pit yard and got my backside kicked off the Colliery copper many times.........and grew up to respect and listen to elders.
Oh how times have changed.........and not for the better.
A good sermon as expected from the Reverend Bingley wheeler.
Thank you. A brilliant video.👍
Could not agree more.
Well said, totally agree. However I think it started to go wrong in the 70's.
your probably right. but we were young and naïve in the 70s so didnt notice the onset.
Absolutely Make do and Mend is a healthy mindset….I’m well impressed at that inner tube repair 👍🏻
your words ring true. i am deeply moved by them. thank you
Looking at the comments here has been uplifting. We certainly are not alone. We recognize basic truths in spite of the lies of the matrix. Great video! (Watched twice).
Cheers buddy much appreciated
At 74 and a bike rider, its just good to be alive.
100% - nobody i know is happy in comparison to how we were before the 90s, bankers mentality has been foisted upon society, have a great day all
Well said.
Sage words Bingley.
Transient worth is a perfect way to put it
Think you might like morgoths review
You said it all, Dante! 🔥
One word Brother AWESOME !
Thank you sir 🙏
Couldn't have put it better
Time and progress, at least what some people define as progress, marches on relentless and unstoppable. The early days of my youth in the sixties were filled with simple pleasures and realistic goals. My how times have changed. In my the sunset of my life I find myself dealing with a more complex way of life that is somehow less fulfilling and more stressful. Riding my motorcycles gives me a brief rekindling of those more calm days of yore and a brief respite from todays multi facetted troubles, both personal and societal.
Yes Bob it’s a mad new world and we need frequent escape
Well said Dave.. after this last week or 2, I can say quite profound.
Thank you John much appreciated
i am of similar age and background as yourself and also look wistfully back on my early life in the North of England with fondness.. however, are we just typical... every generation surely thinks the world is going to pot! we have been fortunate in living in a peaceful affluent democratic little country, which was forced to change because it had to... because the world is forever changing..
Best yet!
Were the last of the truly free Dave 👍🏻
Why have you got a tablet on your handle bars?
So I don’t have to have my phone there
“Consciousness sleeps in minerals, dreams in plants, stirs in the animal, and awakens in man.”
Attributed to?
Ibn Arabi
Rumi
Pythagoras
The real question for me is - where does one’s consciousness reside?
Thanks Dave for your thoughts and visuals 👍
Thank you 🙏 I think it’s outside of all of us and we tune into it in life
@ Yep, consciousness, I think, is apart from the physical, but essential for physical life. A template that we briefly inhabit perhaps.
I need more coffee 😂
Ah, but now we live in the age of expectations…. To consume and throw away without thought.
Thank you Ted yes I suppose we all bear some responsibility for sleep walking into our modern world all we can do is try to live my the old standards
You’re exactly right my friend. I believe that the more we pushed God away in evil was let in and evil used the universities the media and the government to take hold and prevail. God bless you, brother. I truly enjoy your content.
Thank you Joey much appreciated and God bless buddy 🙏
Well said sir where is the human race going.
Have you calmed down how are you feeling better 😊
Perfectly calm me Michael 😎👍🏻
Great story there Peter and yes the naked aggression is all too common
....acceptance of anything and compliance to everything!! How's that working out for you all?!
They are called sheep
@@johnandmargaretjones9532 'Sleeple' is the latest term! ;)
Very thought provoking and I fully agree. However, back in the 50's/60's I remember there being much more misogyny, homophobia and racism. The rot really set in during the Thatcher years where greed was celebrated.
Absolutely agree there buddy 100%
You know what the best thing about getting older is? Not having to worry about dying young.
