    I like this scene for every reason but the older I get the more I appreciate it because it seems like one of the only conversations in the entire movie that is completely OPEN. Yes, they are both seethingly angry at one another but they throw out all the manners and traditions and rules and are just talking and squabbling and showing their FEELINGS to one another. All the repression of the society of their time just explodes and they really have a true moment with one another: violent ugly and sincere and messy. I love it

    I think for Darcy this was actually quite a romantic proposal, every insult he throws at her, are probably the same things he said to him self over and over again, that there are better options for marriage out there, he even gone to such lengths to stop his friend Bennet marrying into this family, yet for himself he is proposing to her, telling her his true feelings, because he is so madly in love with her, reason and his social insecurities can't stop his feelings. For someone, who barely shows any emotion, this must be really frightening. But instead of accepting Lizzie, rightfully rejected him.

    I must compare this scene with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. The scene in comparison is much more sedated. Even when Mr. Darcy venomously utters "Mr. Wickham". This scene is considerably more subtle in the overwhelming attraction between the two in spite of the passionate emotions preventing the consummation of it. The micro facial expressions of Matthew Macfayden expresses immediate regret when Ms. Bennett declares her sister's reserve. Contrasted by the aforementioned hostility with Mr. Wickham immediately afterwards only to followed by fiery volleys from Ms. Knightley's rendition of Ms. Bennett's injury to her pride by his prejudice. A brilliantly executed scene of a brilliant author.

    She is so concerned with using her intelligence and wit to score points, she sends direct hits on the man that has just confessed his love to her. They are both intelligent, but he will never use his intelligence and training against her. She realizes her horrible mistake at the end of this clip. Never use your intelligence against the one you love. Defend them with it!

    • @user-zt3dv5cl4b
      @user-zt3dv5cl4b 2 года назад +50

      She's using her intelligence to protect herself towards his disdain for a woman (/ people ) of her standing, for she realizes love isn't a feeling alone, it also comes with respect, he still has to learn to grow in respect towards her and the people she loves.
      And she can't respect him until he shows more empathy and humility and not hide his insecurities behind his arrogance and aloofness.
      I love period dramas, they portray people in their honest raw fullness.
      It's what life is truly about, without the deception that we're dealing with too often nowadays.
      Back then they knew they had no time to play around.
      Cowardice is a sin. 🤦🏻‍♀️
