If you have female hormones, Mr. Darcy certainly got your attention. The revisionist Mr. Darcy's (Matthew MacFadyen) early-morning walk (march) through the moors was the answer to the 1995 Darcy's (Colin Firth) dive into the lake (that was either to beat the heat or . . . .).
At first, I was wondering why Lizzy just kissed his hand and said nothing. When I review the movie, when Mr. Darcy first proposed to Lizzy, he said "I love you, most ardently. Please do me the honor of accepting my hand" but then Lizzy didnt accept it that time. In the ending, she held and kissed his hand. Now I understand, that gesture without words was her answer to him.
Was also a gesture of intimacy and recognition, even devotion, in that time single women had to be virginal and distant to be considered potential wifes, so such an intimate and devoted gesture is a way of telling him he is her man, that's why he inmediately understands that she accepts him
Yes! He always looking at her, from a far or close up. From the very moment he saw her (the Meryton assembly ball scene), then the Netherfield ball scene, to Rossings scene, the proposal in the rain, etc., etc., even in the Longbourn when Bingley came to propose to Jane but got too scared/embarassed. He always looking at her. Wow. I wish my husband looking at me the way Mr. Darcy looking at Lizzie. Lol.
Mr. Darcy confession to elizabeth is probably one of the most romantic scene I've watched in films. " You have bewitched me body, and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. And I wish from this day forth never to be parted from you."
I could have done without that part. But I suppose that speechifying is not completely out of place in a period piece. At least they refrained from the wet kiss. If you ask me, the best part was when she took him by the hands and remarked at how cold they were. She showed more affection by that gesture than he did in his histrionics.
What I truly love about this movie is in this scene when they kiss it is the only time throughout the entire movie they do kiss. It proves you do not need to have sex scenes in a romantic movie to make it romantic. The anticipation of waiting for them to finally realize they love each other and finally kiss and then when it happens is what makes it so completely, perfectly, and utterly romantic.
I remember whatching this movie at my English Literature class in college (in Brazil) sadly, it was the shorter version, without the kissing scene, and we jocked about for months, "how could we stayed in class for 40 minutes after the bell waiting for the end of the movie and we didn'd get even a single kiss?"😊 The fact is that, jocking or not, none of my classmates were able to leave the room until the end. This is a masterpiece!
I really got emotional over the love between Mr Bennett and his daughter. That's also a deep and rich connection that is overlooked but perhaps the most beautiful in my opinion.
By all accounts, he is a bad father, husband and master. He doesn't even care that much for Lizzy, otherwise, he would listen to her concerns more as far as Lidia and improper behaviour and would actually save some money for them etc. If anything needed some effort from him, he couldn't be bothered- not really, and that doesn't speak of great care.
1. the SCORE 2. darcy walking to her when he's never had to walk a day in his life as a way of throwing it down on the gauntlet once and for all, forgoing all of his pride, ego, reputation, etc. because he is so in love with her 3. darcy not being entirely put together, hair a mess, no top hat, like he's been thinking about doing this all night and he finally does it, not caring how he looks because he is so enamored 4. "you have bewitched me body and soul and i love, i /love/, i love you 4. lizzie just staring with that small smile on her face, her pride falling in front of him because she's seen how much he has stripped himself down for her 5. "your hands are cold" darcy has been walking all night, either to her or just outside, waiting and hesitating if he should do this--he's been thinking of her all night, also just so caring :( "your hands are cold, i wish to warm them with only mine forever" 6. the final lean of the forehead darcy does accompanied by lizzie's open mouth sigh, the final release of their pride and prejudices, resulting in the brightest revelation that rivals that of the morning sun behind them: we are in love and cannot depart from one another from this day on this scene is gold and i wish austen could have seen it
I don’t think you understand the strength it takes to watch him say: “and I love- I love- I love you” and not to burst into tears. The way he’s so nervous because of how much he loves her and he’s dreading a second rejection even though this time his feeling are even stronger than before
I love how Darcy in this movie went from stiff clothing to wearing more comfortable outfits, and finally, dressing down in private moments with Lizzy, especially in the last scene. It's like a visual cue of his character development. What I also love about this adaptation is that it showed how people are not always prim and starched up in the confines of their home, like the scene where Mrs. Bennet reclined on the sofa and the house was cluttered before Bingley and Darcy showed. It makes the movie much more relatable.
I know right. This whole movie is so perfect at showing realistic things. Like socially awkward, how no one is perfect, and even that love doesn’t have to start at the first glance. The way Mr. Darcy loved her, but she at first hated his guts and grew to realize how much she loved him. Ahh, it’s so perfectly magical.
I love the scene where Elizabeth was talking to her father. Mr. Bennet shed tears because he was so touched over the love she had towards Mr. Darcy. They shared such a precious father & daughter moment with that conversation 😭
in the book, it's clearly stated that Lizzy is her father's favorite child. Even after she married Darcy, he visited her constantly. So parting with Lizzy for him was really hard, and he wouldn't want it unless she was really in love and happy. Extremely well acted scene. I felt his pain.
The gazebo proposal scene where it looks like he's going to kiss her -- and it looks like, for a moment, she wants him to -- gets me every.time. I keep thinking to myself that ONE of these times I watch, he's gonna plant one on her. But it never happens..... ;-)

so many comments are making fun of how Elizabeth is not saying anything in this first scene in the field, I understand it's a joke, but listen, he's telling her to say something if she doesn't want him: Mr. Darcy: "One word from you will silence me forever" Elizabeth: doesn't say a word. So clever. And then she just takes his hand, which she rejected before. She doesn't need to say anything in this scene, this gesture says it all.
This scene say a lot. She didn't say any because she had a change of heart. He also is aware that she speak her mind and would have easily turn him down.
@@ntaylor1144 she refused his aunt's demand that Lizzie never accepts any offer of marriage from him. When his aunt angrily told him of her conversation it gave him hope because he knew her bluntness would not have prevented her from telling his aunt that she didn't care for him.
@@contardi I think it was added, for the mass market. Especially the US one. It's not in the UK release. At least in the 1995 version we get a wedding...
The difference in the level of respect we see from Darcy versus Collins is so beautiful! “One word will silence me forever” vs “ah I see you must be playing hard to get, let me just ask three more times”
@@martineshamzin7535 How is it a two sided street? Collins was a misogynistic classist arrogant prick who could not take no for an answer. Anyone should treat him with the exact sterness that Elizabeth did. And her friend did not happily marry him, it was a compromise because she didn't wanna be a burden on her parents anymore.
@@martineshamzin7535 Collins got the better girl for Collins. Elizabeth and Collins would have been terrible! Him and Charolatte seem to work well and of course, Darcy and Elizabeth are much more well suited for each other.
Its funny. Ive grown tired of the love story, but I still keep returning to this movie every year. Something about the visuals, music, and the actors just create such a warm and hopeful feel for me.
My favorite part is when he GENTLY steps towards her to say “if however your feelings have changed”. That step was perfectly done. I held my breath at that time. PERFECT.
I know this is a joke, but I realized that many people dont know the meaning behind this. This line is supposed to mean that she is taking his hand, if you remember in his first proposal he asked her to take his hand, but since she didnt do it then she did it now as a symbol of accepting. So it might sound pretty weird, but it has a big meaning behind it
@@Katherine-xe5fj Oooooooh that is absolutely gorgeous. Despite watching this movie so many times already (and that scene many many more), I did not catch that allusion to his first proposal :') Maybe I should watch the whole movie again, just because
5:47 She does the cute little covering-the-mouth gesture thinking about how much she loves Mr. Darcy, and her father mimicks it thinking about how much he loves her. I think that's so cute.
Donald Sutherland actually did that a few times in the movie to cover his teeth which he felt were too white for the time period. But it's very sweet in that scene.
This is not just another interpretation of a beloved classic, it is also a marvelous cinematic achievement on its own merits. It is as close to perfection as you could get in a romantic production.
I don't find the 2005 version appealing. It focuses too much on the architecture and landscape of the British countryside and departs from the irony and values of Jane Austen way too much. The 1995 version is much more authentic - although I find Matthew MacFayden to be a much more handsome Mr. Darcy than Colin Wirth.
I can only imagine the joy he felt when she doesn't say a word after he says "a word from you will silence me forever". Instead, she just smiles, lets him finish, and holds his hand and points out his hands are cold. She cares about him, she loves him. They've loved each other for a while and they're finally letting themselves be vulnerable and completely honest about it.
Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, who owns one of the largest estates in Derbyshire and earns £ 10,000 a year, is sitting with his coat full of mud, next to a dog and some chickens waiting for the love of his life ♥.
I LOVE THAT LAST SCENE. It’s a peek into what their marriage is like. Them communicating with each other; their wants, their needs, their likes and respecting that and trying their best with each other… love and communication
After my 12th graders had read the book, we saw the film. Big lugs of football playing boys were crying at the conclusion. THAT'S the power of great literature and film making.
From the hand flex earlier in the movie showing him trying to shake her off, how he knows he is falling in love and can't help it despite his pride, to Lizzie taking his hand in the field scene and kissing it, it feels like such a full-circle moment and just beautiful.
It is curious how we interpreted the same scene differently. For me it was quite the opposite, really. It was like her touch burned him for how he felt about her. He wanted to touch her and that was his opportunity by helping her to get into the carriage and that is why she was surprised he did it.
I don't think he was trying to shake her off, even then he was slowly falling in love with her but trying to deny it due to the reasons he gives in the first proposal. The flex is more in the typical romance movie kinda way of 'omygosh-i-just-touched-her-im-never-washing-that-hand-again'. In that moment he flexes his hand as if to pretend that didn't happen because he is in denial of his growing love of her (which is due to his pride) but really he is having severe butterflies. P.S. only my opinion don't be mad if you don't agree.
I agree he wanted to touch her hand, and wanted her to know he wanted to, but then shocked at his own reaction, as if he felt electric shock waves at their slightest touch, and he had to calm himself with that hand flex. She seemed to feel it as well on some level, though she would very much want to deny it at that point in the story. I love that scene, in any case.
"I love, love, love you" has got to be one of the hardest lines to deliver well, and he knocked the socks off it! They are all fantastic actors, and I would watch any one of them walk across a field for 45 seconds.
This scene where her father cries tears of joy absolutely breaks me. It is too beautiful, yet makes me very sad and envious because I've always wished my father had been like that, a good father. A good father....is a blessing
actually if you read the book, the father is pretty shitty. he spends his time in his library and neglects most of his kids, especially the younger ones. he’s too harsh on kitty, doesn’t even give lydia a chance at forgiveness etc. they just downplayed it for the movie to be more digestible ig
I also just noticed his coat was covered in "6 inches of mud" in the scene where he's waiting for Elizabeth to finish talking to her dad - just like hers was when she walked to care for Jane! And Bingley's sister mocked her for it in front of him! This movie is glorious.
Oh to watch this movie for the first time again. The part that made me absolutely sob was when they realized they both wanted to be with each other and instead of kissing, they just EMBRACED each other. They enjoyed each others presence. And when Mr.Darcy was scared to say that he loved Elizabeth it was because he was scared of losing her, no movie will ever compare.
I really like how they only make the characters kiss once in the duration of the movie. It seemed prized. It seemed that they had such strict principles that even a kiss with a wrong person bothered them. I really like how the words “I love you” and a kiss things that maybe very easy to trade nowadays were of such importance to these two, so when they finally exchange their feelings and have their kiss you end up feeling satisfied and happy. This my friends is the importance of timing.
So much this. That is what makes it so hard to date nowadays. I don't take physical affection lightly and so when I want to wait, I'm accused of being "cold". I'm not cold; it's just kisses aren't casual for me. In a time when sex is casual and "fun", people think that that is strange.
In the British version they don’t kiss at all, that’s why I’m watching this on RUclips! I’ve seen the film thousands of times and never knew there was an alternative ending waaaaah
@@abiedward333 OMGGGGG SAMEEEEEE!!!! I was watching the wild child and noted a character was quoting pride and prejudice but somehow i couldn’t recognize the lines. ANd now i’m finding out it’s from this (extra) ending scene!!!!
Matthew Macfadyen is the most utterly perfect Darcy ever. I adored Colin Firth's Darcy, but then this movie came along and I was blown away. Macfadyen's aching vulnerability is simply the best thing about this film.
OMG same! Matthew was my first Darcy. Second was Colin and while he was also amazing in the P&P series, there’s just really that something in Matthew that made my heart flutter constantly! 💜💜💜
exactly! the vulnerability and ability to bring so much emotions into every action he does, even wringing the gloves or writing. He brings so much of emotions
Is noone talking about how this movie/book is such a perfect embodiment of the female gaze? Its more about respect than anything and they take their time. I really appreciate that
I had only seen Keira Knightley in Love Actually when I saw this and it’s kind of hard not to be bowled over by her beauty. You’re right though, it’s also easy to get lost in those eyes. Very gifted actor.
OMG YES! I just rewatched it for I don't know how many times, but YES! This is an embodiment of the female gaze. The respect, the subtle yet too obvious but still respectful longing, everything. I've seen this so many times but I still get the same Kilig I felt the first time I saw it. It is perfection, lol. the actors did so magnificently that every interaction is completely believable as if they really were Elizabeth and Darcy. Jfc, i love this movie
1:20 - "you must know, surely you must know it was all for you" 😍😍bruh this is the sweetest moment in the whole film. Darcy did that all to earn Lizzie's heart.
I don't think he did it to earn her heart. He did it because he loves her so much he wanted to help her and her family. He didn't want her to be upset.
"He and I are so similar!" It's generally accepted that "pride" refers to Darcy and that "prejudice" refers to Elizabeth...but the truth is that both words describe both of them. Darcy is "prejudice" as well as "pride" because he really is a bit of a snob in the beginning -- and Elizabeth is "pride" as well as "prejudice" because even though she's fairly realistic about herself and her life, she does flatter herself just a little when it comes to her opinion of her own perception and wit.
Also, while Lizzie is prejudiced against him, and he is prideful against her, is pride (her own, self pride) that makes her refuse his first proposal, and his prejudice (against her position) that makes him do that first proposal (like that), and when her pride hits his prejudice, that they begin to realize how wrong they were.
@@missrioghnach7864 Once they got to know one another, see how each responds to situations and circumstances. Why Miss Elizabeth inclined toward second chance. No since losing a good man if he isn’t all that bad. 🤷🏽♀️
Ok I just have to say this : Lizzie not responding a "I love you too" at 2:30 is such a sweet, understandable moment when you look at it in more depth. Elizabeth is a talkative, headstrong, witty girl who we always see giving her opinion and sometimes speaking out of turn. Yet when she realizes Mr Darcy is the man who exceeds her expectations and who shows her true love all she can do is show him her feelings with ger actions shyly instead. She. Is. Speechless. That is just such a cute moment for me thanks for coming to my TED talk😂😭
You also have to understand the culture at the time. It was improper for a woman to declare her love for a man. Rather, it was the man who made the declaration. After they were married, the woman could express her thoughts and show affection/ kissing after they were wed.
after watching the film 14 times and pretty much knowing the entire movie script you realise every look mr darcy gives elizabeth and the moments, even in the very beginning he looked at her for a second longer than everyone else and immediately turned ahead as if he was shocked, you can see so much subtle emotion in his eyes especially when he regrets not speaking more to elizabeth or when he feels guilty. but mostly over the movie you see him fall completely in love with her through just his eyes. there are little scenes that lead up to this, one in nether field when elizabeth is announced intro he room, he looked at the servant, looks down to his paper but then when he hears her name he looks back up again. IDK I JUST WANTED TO SAY HOW CUTE THEY ARE LMAO
Matthew did a superb job. Very subtle. One of my favourite scene is how his look change when she tell him that the way to know someone better was through dancing "even if your partner is bearable tolerably". He realised little by little that she heard him when talking to Mr Bingley about her. It was an amazing job.
I thought that when Mr. Darcy invited Elizabeth, her aunt and uncle for dinner, you probably saw the real Mr. Darcy as he would be, since he was under his own roof. He has facade that he presents to people that he does not know well and one that he shows to his sister, the lady housekeeper and those with whom he has interest.
@@claudiabenitezdelgado8399 After he told Lizzy that he only danced if couldn't help it, Darcy stared at her the whole time that she was dancing with others. I liked the look on his face when she walked away after his "barely tolerable" statement was thrown back at him. Priceless!
"He and I are so similar" this line is so amazing. I think everyone should have this feeling to lead a happy married life. & Those last kisses are the pure manifestation of true conjugal love. 🧡❤️
I love how Elizabeth has that cute little manarism with her hand over her mouth when she's very happy that her father also has. it makes it more realistic that she's a daddy's girl and that she is similar to her father and i love... i love... i love it
Yes!!!!!! Jane does this too when she gets proposed to and when getting her first letter inviting her to Netherfield, I just love how the Bennets have this family mannerism I think it’s such a charming detail
The cinematography throughout his entire movie is totally stunning. The acting is beyond perfect. The story is timeless. What else can you say? Easily the best adaptation of the book ever done.
I can never get over how Joe Wright perfectly times the sun hitting first thing in the morning in between Keira and Matthew. The symbolism in itself is stunning.
Yes, I agree. Coming out of the cold mist, to then share the new days sun and warmth. The music is sublime. Also earlier on when they are sheltering from the cold rain, having words, the clap of thunder that hits after Darcy utters, “and even on occasion your father” Boom, like a slap to the face and heart. The pause after this perfect. “Forgive me” Could she ever forgive him? Luckily we know the answer to that.
One of my earliest memories was waking up from a nap when I was 5 or so and walking into the living room as my mom was watching the final scenes. I didn’t know what was going on or the context, but I saw a father who loved his daughter and a daughter who found the love of her life. This is one of my favourite movies and the soundtrack will never cease to take me to that world.
You were clever enoug: you caught the deep meaning of feelings between father and daugther ( behind the main love story Mt.Darci and she) @Steadystudying
I LOVE how Mr Bennet is more concerned about his daughter being happy, and how much of a fortune he is willing to give up if she is not sure it will make her happy. Like he even wants her to rethink of what she is choosing
Men like him are only fictional. This is why I love reading British love novels, they have the ability to transport us to a world of fantasy, a world of our own.
@Hannah Southard I dunno.. When you make enough mistakes you start to lose hope for it... But that doesn't mean I'm not happy for those who actually feel they've got it....
Querida estou com 76 anos e continuo derretendo, quando filme era só no cinema eu já tinha o livro que acredito que com mais um pouco de tempo vai se esfarelar. Gratidão ☺️
The scene of Matthew walking across the field towards Kiera and the background music score put me in overwhelming tears. For a women, it’s the most romantic scene ever. I fell in love with Mr. Darcy instantly.
I just rewatched the film for the a millionth time tonight, and I realised the gasp from Lizzie here felt to me like a callback to when Darcy tried that first time to propose to her, bursting into Charlotte's house and gasping when he first enters the room to find Elizabeth there, before being unable to find the words and leaving.
Before all of the Kdrama´s I have watched, Darcy was the person who set my standards so high and he will always be the standard, because no one can surpass that confession ever
Honestly, I can't find a good reason why they cut the final scene. It was the happiest we had seen Mr Darcy in the entire movie. Anyway, the movie is still priceless.
To a modern audience especially an American audience it's implying that they are back at Pemberlly and about to have intimacy because it's implied that they are now married. One of the things I really don't like about the Keira Knightley version is that they don't show the wedding at all. I know that's playing to modern controversy over religion and expectations. But it just ruins the ending for me. If they had had some kind of wedding scene of the double wedding with them all dressed up and just smiling at each other and the minister says I Now pronounce you husband and wife. Each couple kisses and they face the audience They all smile like idiots and then it cuts immediately to this scene that would have been fine. but ALL weddings back then were religious and Hollywood going so far as to cut even that 3 to 5 Seconds out of the movie just pisses me the hell off. Society of England at the time was super religious compared to now and you just have to suck that up when you're doing a historical movie.
Tell me about it. I was so angry when I watched that ending from the television. I was like "What kind of ending is that, ah ah they deserve more". When I accidentally watched the ending on RUclips, I could feel my blood pressure rising by my neck. Finally, now that's a perfect ending. It's ☺️ so😍BEAUTIFUL😭😭. I watched that ending over and over again.
Purest love, without it being too physical. You can feel the emotions and how romantic it is. It just always makes me emotional. I want this kind of love ❤
Tonight I watched this movie for the third time and JUST noticed Darcy's double take when seeing Elizabeth at the ball for the first time. I believe he fell for her in that exact moment. She fell too, although it takes much longer for her to be honest with herself about this fact. After seeing that, I closely watched their body language throughout the film and was astounded at the gravity of what was conveyed so subtly through their eyes and expressions. My favorite part was during their fight when she says she would never marry a man like him and they almost kiss. The delicacy, subtlety and subtext of that and other key moments makes this movie truly special.
When they almost kiss...i think she realises that she is in love with him... you can see it in her eyes The next scene on the bed thinking and then not facing him when he brings her the letter...Bang!! She's in love with him
Darcy never thought or dreamed that he would meet someone, of all places, at the Herfordshire Ball. It was his first jolt. Although Lizzy was of landed gentry, she not in the same financial class as he and Bingley. I thought that Darcy became really aroused the first time when Lizzy asked him if he danced. The surprise look on his face. He stared at her the entire time that she was dancing with others. The second time was the poetry discussion and that dancing arouses affection, but only if one's partner is "barely tolerable." She let him know that she overheard his opinion of her. It challenged him. For Darcy, it was on!
NO!! There was SO much unexpected, tangible attraction for each other in that rainy scene when Darcy tells Lizzy that he loves her. He naturally gravitate towards her, and she to him...but the facial acknowledgement they each make ...internally they realize the attraction and I think it completely rocks their world!
I saw thé last scene on RUclips And I was So surprise!! 😳 When I watched od thé movie in tv I felt that IT can't be end.......last scene how Elizabeth spoke with her father, then I saw the kissing scene I though what Is it? Why they didnt give IT to movie, but I was happy of thé beautiful end. So much love between them, So wonderful chemistry And how He looks to her eyes And thé Kiss. An amazing movie! 😍❤️🤗
The last scene was added for the US audience. It actually 'dumbs things down' and spoils the end of the film. The story is about Love triumphing over Pride and Prejudice, which is what the dialogue between Elizabeth and her father is there for.
I actually like it better without the alternate ending. The scene that always stuck with me in this movie is the scene with Elizabeth and her father with him happily laughing at the end. We've already seen the confessions of love between Elizabeth and Darcy. We really didn't need another scene for that. The scene with the father was all about the "pride" and "prejudice" that Darcy and Elizabeth along with Elizabeth's family had towards each other finally melting away. It's perfect. I wouldn't necessarily say the added scene ruins anything. But it doesn't really contribute anything, either.
Can’t believe this vid just uploaded a week ago. I've waited those kisses for 15 years, since I was a little girl wishing to meet my Mr. Darcy one day.
Am I the only one that wants to see what their married life would be like? Like no drama, no issues just both of them learning more about each other and being happy yk🥰
In the book there is some extra. Jane and Bingley buy an estate in the county next to Derbyshire-- they can see Darcy and Elizabeth often, and Mrs. Bennet less often. Lydia stays married to Wickham, so keeps her reputation, but they're constantly out of money and not very happy. Kitty spends most of her time with Jane and Elizabeth and "her improvement was great." Elizabeth's aunt and uncle, in spite of being "not society," are frequent visitors. Darcy grows as fond of them as Elizabeth is, society or not. Mr. Bennet also visits frequently because he misses Elizabeth so much.
@@marthawolfsen5809 I want to add up my absolute favorite part of the last chapter when they mentioned that Georgiana has a very good opinion on Elizabeth but sometimes was suprised at the lively manner of Lizzie's way to talk to Darcy 💕 I just imagine them all adorable, Lizzie teasing Darcy and Darcy loving every second of it
@Kyla Martin then read the book Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife. It’s a spin-off novel that is supposed to be about Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s first year of marriage. Also, there is another spin-off novel called Eligible. Takes place in the modern day and it is more set up like a tv show, kinda like The Bachelor in a sense.
She was the perfect Elizabeth Bennet. It is just the confirm that Oscar is not necessary to coronate a good-perfect performance. Keira Knightley is really talented, so talented that she's in our hearts and admirations for as long this movie will be seen
The reason why the new generation of films spend so much time and effort on bed scenes is because they just struggle to accurately convey emotions through their acting or literature. What a timeless masterpiece! ❤❤❤❤❤
You don’t even realize you’re smiling because you’ve done it so much. It’s perfect joy. But I also agree with the person that said it comes as naturally as breathing. It does. It’s beautiful and it’s something everyone should have the chance to experience but too few people get that chance. I got it, and I cherish him every day. I love him. ❤️❤️
Everything about this movie is beautiful. The soundtrack, the places, the colours of it, the chemistry between the actors. It's really one of my favourites.
I'm an old school critic and this movie with these actors have me entranced! A movie for all to be enjoyed over and over!Have watched it 12 times so far enjoy it always.
Even if my future husband's last name isn't Darcy I'd still make him call me Mrs Darcy when he is completely, perfectly and incandescently happy 🤣🤣🤣 (edit: it's a joke)
Same here. I love love 😁 and the movie always helps me remember how our love started, the kisses, the strong feelings, the letters, the anticipation...
Oh come on dears....a bird in hand is worth two in the bush.....humans are not perfect...so is love coz humans love....but fantasies can be as perfect as we wish....... cherish ur hubbies they r worth many Mr. Darcys
One of the most beautiful love stories ever. And the scene where they confess their love never fails to pierce my heart with the most exquisite joy and happy tears. Even Pappa Bennett made me cry.
The person(s) who did the casting and chose the actors pretty much nailed it on this one. When you are completely immersed in the characters and the story and all together forget who the actors really are. Well that is what a movie experience should be.
This movie is so good! It's all of the small moments that make it. I love when Lizzy and Darcy look at each other after Darcy speaks with Mr Bennett. It's as if he's wishing her good luck and she's telling him she knows she doesn't need it.
I have so much love for Mr. Bennet's respect and trust in his daughter. Even if she hadn't told him all that Darcy did to reprimand his past mistakes with their family, he was prepared to accept her decision regardless. And above all else he saw the love she had for Darcy. AGH #parentgoals
As much as I loved Colin Firth in P & P, I just can't see him pulling off this scene as well as Matthew did. Simply perfection in every sense of the word.
@@imisstoronto3121 It wasn’t in the book though. The film-makers used a LOT of artistic licence throughout this version - too much for me and other Austen purists.
When I first watched this movie, I was a helpless pool of want when he was walking towards her in the field in the early morning hours and then I found out they did this in one take and the film crew was also gushing like "wow this is so romantic" and I'm like ahhhhhhhhhhh. 15 yrs later, and this movie still does it for me!!
Matthew Macfadyen's voice sweeps me off my feet each time I hear it!! That coat flapping as he walks toward her, OMG. My only wish would have been for the movie to be about 20-25 minutes longer, for in some places it is too rushed.
@@Godgivenlife My friend is a literary professor and said that a wedding scene would have been so unlike the writing of Jane Austen. That is why the Brits had their version of the movie end with the scene with Lizzie and her dad. The US version added the post marital kiss, but again, the Brits wailed saying Jane would NOT have approved.
There's like 45 straight seconds of Darcy just walking towards the camera in a field, and I don't think anybody was bored....
Ha, ha.......so true !!!!!

Was also a gesture of intimacy and recognition, even devotion, in that time single women had to be virginal and distant to be considered potential wifes, so such an intimate and devoted gesture is a way of telling him he is her man, that's why he inmediately understands that she accepts him
Ohhhh!!! Same here!
How you scripted my exact thoughts. The emotions are so strong and so beautifully expressed. ❤
Thanks for this. I never realized it.
in addition to that he also said that 'one word from you will silence me forever' so she just didnt say anything
The actor half of the time, acted through his eyes, the way he sees her is so contradictory to what he says, the chemistry is soooooooo good

So beautiful 💕
Absolutely 💯
Exactly!!! The way he utters "I love... I love... I love you" is the best performance ever! Such a talented actor!
I could have done without that part. But I suppose that speechifying is not completely out of place in a period piece. At least they refrained from the wet kiss. If you ask me, the best part was when she took him by the hands and remarked at how cold they were. She showed more affection by that gesture than he did in his histrionics.
*swoons*
What I truly love about this movie is in this scene when they kiss it is the only time throughout the entire movie they do kiss. It proves you do not need to have sex scenes in a romantic movie to make it romantic. The anticipation of waiting for them to finally realize they love each other and finally kiss and then when it happens is what makes it so completely, perfectly, and utterly romantic.
Soo true
I agree, you do not need sex scenes to show that they’re in love with each other
I remember whatching this movie at my English Literature class in college (in Brazil) sadly, it was the shorter version, without the kissing scene, and we jocked about for months, "how could we stayed in class for 40 minutes after the bell waiting for the end of the movie and we didn'd get even a single kiss?"😊 The fact is that, jocking or not, none of my classmates were able to leave the room until the end. This is a masterpiece!
I agree, it makes the moment where they finally do kiss so much better and more perfect
Btw, I saw the movie on Netflix and I never saw this scene☹☹ do you think they cut it out??
I really got emotional over the love between Mr Bennett and his daughter. That's also a deep and rich connection that is overlooked but perhaps the most beautiful in my opinion.
I know. I keep praying that God give my daughter and her father this kind of love, connection and respect
I agree, for me there's clearly a deep bond between Mr. Bennett and Elizabeth. Beautiful, beyond the love story with Mr. Darcy.
By all accounts, he is a bad father, husband and master. He doesn't even care that much for Lizzy, otherwise, he would listen to her concerns more as far as Lidia and improper behaviour and would actually save some money for them etc. If anything needed some effort from him, he couldn't be bothered- not really, and that doesn't speak of great care.
read the book “jane austen at home” then. it explains the cultural background of this father/daughter relationship...
Reminds me of my relationship with my late father ❤️❤️❤️
1. the SCORE
2. darcy walking to her when he's never had to walk a day in his life as a way of throwing it down on the gauntlet once and for all, forgoing all of his pride, ego, reputation, etc. because he is so in love with her
3. darcy not being entirely put together, hair a mess, no top hat, like he's been thinking about doing this all night and he finally does it, not caring how he looks because he is so enamored
4. "you have bewitched me body and soul and i love, i /love/, i love you
4. lizzie just staring with that small smile on her face, her pride falling in front of him because she's seen how much he has stripped himself down for her
5. "your hands are cold" darcy has been walking all night, either to her or just outside, waiting and hesitating if he should do this--he's been thinking of her all night, also just so caring :( "your hands are cold, i wish to warm them with only mine forever"
6. the final lean of the forehead darcy does accompanied by lizzie's open mouth sigh, the final release of their pride and prejudices, resulting in the brightest revelation that rivals that of the morning sun behind them: we are in love and cannot depart from one another from this day on
this scene is gold and i wish austen could have seen it

I love how she kisses his ring finger (or so it seems to me). It's a proposal after all, and it was beautifully captured without words.

"He and I are so similar!"
It's generally accepted that "pride" refers to Darcy and that "prejudice" refers to Elizabeth...but the truth is that both words describe both of them.
Yes! Elizabeth prides herself on being a great judge of character but then got Wickham and Darcy all wrong
Agree
“a bit of a snob”. Understatement of the century!
Ok I just have to say this :
Lizzie not responding a "I love you too" at 2:30 is such a sweet, understandable moment when you look at it in more depth.
Out of turn?
Lizzie took her sister Jane's advice and "hold her tongue " I guess .. it's cutee
😂
this almost make me cry ,,,
after watching the film 14 times and pretty much knowing the entire movie script you realise every look mr darcy gives elizabeth and the moments, even in the very beginning he looked at her for a second longer than everyone else and immediately turned ahead as if he was shocked, you can see so much subtle emotion in his eyes especially when he regrets not speaking more to elizabeth or when he feels guilty. but mostly over the movie you see him fall completely in love with her through just his eyes. there are little scenes that lead up to this, one in nether field when elizabeth is announced intro he room, he looked at the servant, looks down to his paper but then when he hears her name he looks back up again. IDK I JUST WANTED TO SAY HOW CUTE THEY ARE LMAO
Matthew did a superb job. Very subtle. I thought that when Mr. Darcy invited Elizabeth, her aunt and uncle for dinner, you probably saw the real Mr. Darcy as he would be, since he was under his own roof. The cinematography throughout his entire movie is totally stunning. The acting is beyond perfect. The story is timeless. What else can you say? Easily the best adaptation of the book ever done.
Music too
Good, but not the best. The series with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle is the best adaptation ever.
The music is gorgeous too!
@@katalinsztancsik2291 I agree. Most faithful to the book too!
For me it was also the best adaptation so atmospheric.
I can never get over how Joe Wright perfectly times the sun hitting first thing in the morning in between Keira and Matthew. The symbolism in itself is stunning.
I love his directing in this film so so much even the scene where they confront each other angrily and almost kiss but doesn't
Simply beautiful. I’ve watched it 678 times
The most romantic movie scene ever.
So true... Everyone whish to found a mr Darcy.
Sim!!
They set the goal
wont ever be matched
Hi friend
Men like him are only fictional. This is why I love reading British love novels, they have the ability to transport us to a world of fantasy, a world of our own.
Could you recommend some good books? I would love to read them.
Men like him are only fictional... Truer words have never been said.
@Hannah Southard I dunno.. When you make enough mistakes you start to lose hope for it... But that doesn't mean I'm not happy for those who actually feel they've got it....
@Hannah Southard Thank you!
@@maria___laz4109 Thanks! :)
My god, I've rewatched this move probably 100 times since it came out. It blew me away in my 20s and I'm still melting in my 40s.

Same.
That's what I say too, sexiest scene ever!!
Same here. Such a beautiful scene!
The sigh. The sigh at the 00:06 from Lizzie when Darcy appears walking. THAT SIGH is just the confirmation of how much in love she was.
I've always thought it should have been an inhale rather than an exhale though
@@EMidMSO I think it's a sign of relief ☺️
I just rewatched the film for the a millionth time tonight, and I realised the gasp from Lizzie here felt to me like a callback to when Darcy tried that first time to propose to her, bursting into Charlotte's house and gasping when he first enters the room to find Elizabeth there, before being unable to find the words and leaving.
To me it always sounds like a gasp of surprise.
“Your hands are cold.” He walked all the way here 😭 he knows how much she loves walking ugh this is too sweet
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Omg because of your comment I JUST understood why she says that! So we understand that he WALKED. OMG
Anyway, the movie is still priceless.
the happiest he is because he is 'completely, perfectly and incandescently happy'
I was wondering why I watched Netflix and the ending is not the same one I’ve watched before. So I’m here looking for that ending ❤
The way she says "I love him" is so sharply acted dang girl
Keira was 18 here!
Purest love, without it being too physical. You can feel the emotions and how romantic it is. It just always makes me emotional. I want this kind of love ❤
It was also my dream.
When they almost kiss...i think she realises that she is in love with him... you can see it in her eyes
The next scene on the bed thinking and then not facing him when he brings her the letter...Bang!!
And I thought I was the only one that noticed
NO!! There was SO much unexpected, tangible attraction for each other in that rainy scene when Darcy tells Lizzy that he loves her. He naturally gravitate towards her, and she to him...but the facial acknowledgement they each make ...internally they realize the attraction and I think it completely rocks their world!
The thunder crack in the background after they speak... sounds like they are panthers growling after each chunk they take out of the other
I'm sad that so many people don't know about this last scene. The entire movie is beautiful, but they're missing out on perfection.
I’ve never seen the movie without this ending.
@@alfnoakes392 lol no it doesn’t. It makes it better. Don’t be bitter.
Are yall going through a Pride and Prejudice phase too👀
Yeah 😔👊

The way they are looking at each other as she shuts the door. OMG🇿🇦
Am I the only one that wants to see what their married life would be like? Like no drama, no issues just both of them learning more about each other and being happy yk🥰
There are spin off novels...even a mystery series.
Thank you guys so much, I didn't even know that there were spinoff books. Yall just made my day😩🤣

Mr. Bennet: Shut the door, please Elizabeth.
Once the door’s closed...
Mr.Bennet: Lizzy are you out of your senses?😂

he has the most dad-like reaction ever. it is adorable.
how I wish I could experience pure, unconditional love like this... back then every small gesture mattered so much compared to now
When he says “one word will silence me forever” and she just stares at him so he knows to keep on going, her FEELINGS HAVE CHANGED!! 😍😍
Oh man. I totally missed that and just thought it was normal beats to a dramatic monologue.
I was actually disappointed when Keira Knightley did not win the Oscar for her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet.
قصه رائعه عن الكبرياء وعزه النفس والاعتراف بالخطاءوالرجوع عنه
She was the perfect Elizabeth Bennet. It is just the confirm that Oscar is not necessary to coronate a good-perfect performance. Keira Knightley is really talented, so talented that she's in our hearts and admirations for as long this movie will be seen
Because it was rubbish, that's why. Jennifer Ehle is the best.
Still disappointed.
I was more disappointed when the soundtrack didn't won! Such a beautiful music! What a sham!
THE LAST SCENE WAS CUT FROM NETFLIX IM GLAD I SEARCHED IT HERE
Same
YES😭😭
Why did they cut it though 😭
I KNOW I JUST FINISHED IT LAST NIGHT AND IT FELT SO CUT SHORT
I dont know why they cut it. Its the best part.
The reason why the new generation of films spend so much time and effort on bed scenes is because they just struggle to accurately convey emotions through their acting or literature.
What a timeless masterpiece!
❤❤❤❤❤
I agree , they don’t. Really take time to understand emotions, they just want to get into it.
I wanna know so bad how it feels to love somebody so much that simply talking to them is enough to make you smile
It is rare nowadays because we have stopped taking our words seriously, so the talk is mostly superficial.
It is utopia and comes as naturally as breathing.
@@furtherstudies1456 AGREED
You don’t even realize you’re smiling because you’ve done it so much. It’s perfect joy. But I also agree with the person that said it comes as naturally as breathing. It does. It’s beautiful and it’s something everyone should have the chance to experience but too few people get that chance. I got it, and I cherish him every day. I love him. ❤️❤️
There will never be a romance to surpass Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. Also the father-daughter relationship is goals. Brought tears to my eyes.

I just saw it today on the television and I just won't forgive myself if I don't watch it again
I've just discovered this version. I'm a fan of the 1940 adaptation, but these performances are stellar.
The person(s) who did the casting and chose the actors pretty much nailed it on this one. When you are completely immersed in the characters and the story and all together forget who the actors really are. Well that is what a movie experience should be.
👏👏👏
I love the 1995 version, but I would give a LOT to see Colin Firth pull off that scene in the meadow and this last scene with Elizabeth.
@@imisstoronto3121 It wasn’t in the book though. The film-makers used a LOT of artistic licence throughout this version - too much for me and other Austen purists.
