A New Hope was a pivotal film. If you look at the movies from the decade before it to the decade after it you can see almost single handedly where it made the shift to films that were more tonally optimistic and more open to science fiction and fantasy.

Sanders worked gigs till the age of 40 and never had much money (or income stability). While he stubbornly tried to run for office (gov. House, etc.) with a small independent left party, they always lost, I think the best results they ever had was 10 %. I think he was genuinely thankful for winning the mayor's race. *_Calling into the void_* and constantly bringing up The Issues and doing what was possible is what he has done since his mid twenties - but now at least it came with income security, a good healthcare plan and even a bit of prestige.
Winning the race for mayor in Burlington opened new opportunities * for him, from that office he launched himself to D.C. (with some more stubborn / diligent work).
He met Jane during the party after winning the race for mayor (she was smitten by his passion and visions she said). So a lot of things fell in place for him at age 40. He had a job (at least for 2 years), money, and a family incl. some step children.
      * He made the best of the office of mayor of Burlington despite unfair tactics of the council members (aldermen - that was a D insider club and they were furious that this unknown Independent had unseated one of the most important Democrats in little Vermont). That office gave him the opportunity to get some name recognition in the state, and after a few more lost races he won a House seat. I may also have impressed on him on a deep level, that there is always something that _can_ be done despite unfair opposition, that voters will reward those efforts - if you explain it to them. And that holding contact to the voters and EXPLAINING things to them is crucial. For him it is not just a strategy, it secured his financial and professional future.
Sanders was not good 9 - 5 cubicle material so I wonder what his life would be like if he had not had that surprising win at age 40 (it was a lot of steady work, building on years of experience with seemingly futile campaigns. AND some luck).
It is worth noticing that whenever he won an office - he then continuted to win the races for it with ever increasing margins. He got good grades from his constituents (first mayor - they have term limits, then member of the House, then Senator).
I think he never forgot to be thankful for the job of representing The People and the income and health insurance that comes with it. So that keeps him sane, constantly talking about the same issues and there is not much progress comes with the job.
Being thankful for the income is a good mindset, because a lot of his collegues are not content with the 160k a year + healthcare or whatever it is. So they are eager to cozy up to the big donors, they have the cushy position for ex politicians in mind (for former services rendered for the big donors).
I think he was lonely when he started out in Congress (in the House). But again he was stubborn enough to not be discouraged and he did his thing.
One advantage - his flights home at the weekend from D.C. are not that long. So on the weekends he could regenerate.

As an American citizen of Jewish background (I'm personally atheist), this is such an important conversation. Visiting Israel, through Birthright almost 20 years ago, only solidified my position that Palestinians deserve the right to their own state. The horrors that happened to my people in Europe due to the rise of Hitler should NEVER have led to some of the same exact crimes being perpetrated on a different population at our hands. It's unconscionable, to put it mildly. It's too late to go back and undo the past.... but at a bare minimum Palestine needs independence and the right to self-determination and all of the land stolen since the Oslo accords agreement returned

since you think hASSan is "brilliant", I wonder if you know about that story he told about his prom date from high school? It was false - he made it up, but she's a real person and she did actually get death threats because of the story he told. He knew about this going on for years, yet did nothing to defend her against the many threats against her and her family. Finally, it was exposed in the NYT and other sources. His defense was that his show wasn't supposed to be taken literally or as fact, but was instead just "comedy". Which is weird, because he definitely presented his show as serious commentary (done in a "funny" way) on current events, not him just making up funny stories.

Heck my 105 year old grandma in India still wakes up at 4 am to milk cows and carry it back in buckets by the gallon home, picks vegetables by hand, sits on the floor cross legged to eat, plays with kids in the streets, is not incontinent and feeds herself. She's also not the only elderly person in our village that can do that. The US needs to take care of its elderly better and give them purpose so they're not sitting in an old age home at 80.

One can still be Jewish and still be pro-Palestine.
The important comment is Israel DID have the right to defend their country. Totally agree bc if that was the US, we'd do the same. BUT, they went way to far to ethnic cleansing causing a genocide.

as an israeli jew i can tell yall, having a jew as president with ties to israel as bernie does would have been a HUGE boon to actually pushing back on israel.

If he was clear eyed about what "Israel" really is as a society deeply and desperately brain washed around hated of others that aren't like them.

Seemingly the fastest/easiest way to change the country is by starting small - become a major influence in your city/town's political environment, promote the legislation you want to live in, engage in friendly conversation with your neighbors, attend town halls and provide commentary at city council meetings. The more people who get involved, the less work for the individual, but most work starts solitary. Necessity is the mother of invention.

We need a direct democracy instead of a representative democracy.
We the people should vote for policy instead of voting for people. Like he says at a 19:00 , most Americans agree on the vast majority of policy, or at least are able to actually compromise.
Otherwise, we will always be run by the most powerful as they own both parties.

Israel already admitted to using the Hannibal directive. Most of the civilians were killed by Israeli forces.

That's just not true. Haaretz investigation came to the conclusion that the directive was used. But of course Israel never admitted that and we don't know how many were killed by the own forces. It's unlikely that it was a significant part

2% of the population as for now according to the numbers of Hamas which can lean towards exaggeration. Stop the nonsense

@@SuperEliasc they don't lean towards exaggeration. Those are documented deaths. For conflicts of this type the death toll is always way higher than what you could count

@@Ray25689 still 2% of the population. The claim is also that the ratio of deaths of combatants to non-combatants is a 1 to 1 which is far from implying the Hannibal directive, isn’t it?
