I think I respect him even more. Honestly prior to this “exposé” any reasonable person would expect, and even require, that his standup should be loosely based in reality to not only protect those he talks about, but to enhance the clarity of complicated stories without rambling. He is a comedian doing standup, it is his job to not loose the audience and to evoke laughter. The fact that he is actually as close to reality as he is without endangering his former gf/family is actually super impressive. He’s consistently above and beyond in logic and emotional sway for his genre. If anything the article should have been about how other comedians could take notes.

In the early 2000s, a reporter came to my high school to interview students about video games. I happily volunteered, looking forward to share the different genres and stories I'd experienced in the medium. Video games were getting a bad rap at the time, so I thought FINALLY I can share how cool and interesting these games can be. How naive I was. To my dismay, i read the article and found the reporter heavily edited my quotes to promote a piece about video game addiction. Sure, the topic is trivial but it taught me a valuable lesson on how some repooters twist truths and stories to fit their message.
It definitely sounds like this reporter, her editor and the mag were on a mission and were determined to twist whatever Hasan said to fit their pre-formed narrative. The article was designed to be a hit piece. I'm so sorry about all the things that Hasan and his family has had to go through. And I'm so angry about our billionaire-owned government and media that work very hard to keep We The People separate, confused and in our assigned places with their well-shod feet on our necks..

What's really deceitful about the article is the excerpts that are highlighted in the subtitle and inserts - A reader takes these as accurate encapsulations of the content but instead they are hyperbolic distortions of the details in the story. Defenders of the story point to sections of the story that can be claimed to be more nuanced but what is highlighted is not.

I've never gone to a comedy show expecting everything to be true, I go to be entertained, You don't owe me or anybody an apology. your job is to make us laugh; and if you throw in some uncomfotable truths even better. If they don't get it that's their loss, not yours.. Part of being a good comedian is being sensitive to people, but sometimes you need to tell them to F#%k off. As an Indian woman, this is the flavor of racism we deal with. Nit-picking, gaslighting to have us meeting unfairly high standards, needing to remain very calm as we lay down rational receipts of facts. I am the first woman in my family to leave the Indian community and work/go to school/live primarily around other races, and this has been the experience. Hasan's response feels simultaneously familiar and a masterclass on how to improve my responses the next time it happens with me.

No artist anywhere tells an experience exactly as it happens. Their craft is to tell a good story. Sometimes that means spinning it into a relatable tale. Taking bits and pieces of reality and turn them into something understandable and educational or entertaining.
Yeah, Chris Rock has a bit where he jokes that he writes the punch lines first and then comes up with a story to justify it. The prevalence of comedians halfway through a joke saying "and this is true" implies that a lot of it is false, and probably a lot of the "true" things are false too.
That’s the entire point of arts. That’s what creative license is: an understanding that ART is interpretation, not journalism. Comedy, especially, is a reorganization of expectations.
I remember seeing some of these articles popping up and it felt like such a joke every time, it was hilarious and sad to skim through. I love your work man, it never mattered whether or not it was based on real events, it was still worth telling.
Yeah, it came across as very dismissive to my ear. Edit: I am hesitant to place all of the blame on the reporter, though. The editors are the ones that actually structure a piece. Of course, both could be true: she was uninterested and editorial chopped it up for their slimy framing.

My takeaway is that in his stand-up routines occasionally there are specifics that are changed or the story is told as though it happened to him when he was more incidentally involved but the base events are all real, however in his series and specials all the facts are unadulterated.
Ive always thought comedians, in any shape or form, were never as serious as I thought them out to be and this is mainly because of my mental immaturity. But as the tides across the world changes drastically, I started to realize the work these gems have put, even if it's done as a joke or satire, which compliments my mode of thinking a lot. Except it isn’t a tabloid and by right idea expected to hold itself to a higher standard. Also, these interviews are typically recorded and it would be very odd for the participant not to have access to them, they just don’t get to control what happens with them. So, essentially, it’s an example of TNY taking a shot at the wrong person to mess with and not about an occurrence of extraordinary diligence.

From what I understand, his bending of the truth got a real life person he mention in his comedy special to be doxed and harassed. I know Bret Kreisher probably fabricated a lot of his stories but I have yet to hear about anyone being haress for it. I always found something mildly ridiculous about this whole thing. Are there people out there who expect comedy shows to be full of true stories? I always operated on the assumption that every story was full of artistic license and exaggerations because life doesn't follow a setup-punchline structure.
I don’t think it was necessarily that every single thing needed to be true and that that was why people were mad. I think it was just that the emotional connections he made with the audience was built on shared experiences of racism, and so when it was made to seem like those experiences were falsified, it felt that he "faked" experiences of racism just to get a connection with the audience. It not necessarily that the jokes weren’t true, it was that the stories they were based on weren’t.
Most people understand the artistic license that comes with a comedian's stand-up, and "Comedian bends truth to make funnier jokes" isn't a very compelling story. The journalists from The New Yorker are savvy professionals, and everything in how their piece is written is meant to heavily imply that because of this you can't trust his political work like Patriot Act.
I’m also shocked. Since when do we consider stand up comedy jokes as all facts? While the language used is rhetorical, I’ve always viewed it as something similar to a play, a story, or a song where its clear that the author took inspiration from certain events in their life and created a script to deliver jokes.

How to make a good response video: * Went straight to the point * No crap * No bullsh!t * No excuses * Provides evidence to debunk these claims (emails, recordings, messages etc.) * Apology feels genuine * Keeps his cool * Consistency * Thoroughly explains why he changed the stories. This is one of the first times I've seen an apology video responded with, "YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO APOLOGIZE FOR!" You're awesome. You did this right.

Incredible video and so insightful. Happy to see it because I’ve always looked up to you as an artist; the article really threw me for a loop. In a way, it’s a shame the article forced you to spell this out. Kind of like seeing a ‘behind the scenes’ of a fantasy film, and learning a portion of it was green screen or special effects. I think we all understand that there’s a certain amount of tweaking for narrative purposes in storytelling - we just ignore it and consciously ‘buy in’ because that enhances the experience. I think good stories are built on a foundation of truth, and it’s easy to sense when that’s not the case. A true storyteller knows what to manipulate so audiences get the best bang for your buck, entertainment wise, while the purposes of the story remains clear.
I’d like to see a single standup comedian, political or otherwise, to declare publicly that they have never embellished a single story for the purpose of their acts. Now I’d like to hear The New Yorker go on the record that they also never embellished a story or omitted relevant information from any of their articles. 😑
This is an incredible example of going about, "No, actually, YOU'RE wrong" without coming across as a petulant child. So many cited sources, examples and recordings, it was direct and specific. Not a public performer, but I give speeches for my work. I absolutely conflate disparate anecdotes together and glue them together with poetic license. It would take 5 times longer to tell all the stories and they would be 1/5th as engaging. Like if a person days "A" on one occasion and "B" another time, and you want to show how "A, and B" is a compelling point, then just tell the story as if they were said in the same occasion! Storytellers do this all the time. As long as you're not changing the essence of what was said by adding or omitting key details or context, then it's just about wrapping the story like a gift so other people can receive it. Hasan, this is an art and I think you are very skilled at it. I'm sorry such a misleading article gained so much traction.
Isn't this also how someone writes a memoir or autobiography that is engaging? If you told all the mundane details of every interaction you've had, a book would be too long to keep anyone's interest.

Some people don't get comedy, and those are the people the article is intended for. Every time I hear a comedian telling a story within their routine, I ASSUME it's a joke or exaggeration intended to make a specific point until they say otherwise elsewhere, outside the performance.
There's a reason that in many stand-up specials comedians are often in the middle of a bit and they turned to the audience and before a major part they say "and this part is 100% true" and then say part of the bit. They do that because it's quite obvious that comedy bits are nuggets of truth with comedic embellishment for the purpose of entertainment and storytelling
You can tell the reporter walked in with a perception of who you actually are. Every time you told her the truth her response was “sure”, “yeah” as if she didn’t want to believe you. She deserves reciprocates for her false journalism.

I think I respect him even more. Honestly prior to this “exposé” any reasonable person would expect, and even require, that his standup should be loosely based in reality to not only protect those he talks about, but to enhance the clarity of complicated stories without rambling. He is a comedian doing standup, it is his job to not loose the audience and to evoke laughter. The fact that he is actually as close to reality as he is without endangering his former gf/family is actually super impressive. He’s consistently above and beyond in logic and emotional sway for his genre.
If anything the article should have been about how other comedians could take notes.

In the early 2000s, a reporter came to my high school to interview students about video games. I happily volunteered, looking forward to share the different genres and stories I'd experienced in the medium. Video games were getting a bad rap at the time, so I thought FINALLY I can share how cool and interesting these games can be. How naive I was. To my dismay, i read the article and found the reporter heavily edited my quotes to promote a piece about video game addiction. Sure, the topic is trivial but it taught me a valuable lesson on how some repooters twist truths and stories to fit their message.
It definitely sounds like this reporter, her editor and the mag were on a mission and were determined to twist whatever Hasan said to fit their pre-formed narrative. The article was designed to be a hit piece.

A comedian is holding themself to a higher standard than journalists and politicians.
What's really deceitful about the article is the excerpts that are highlighted in the subtitle and inserts - A reader takes these as accurate encapsulations of the content but instead they are hyperbolic distortions of the details in the story. Defenders of the story point to sections of the story that can be claimed to be more nuanced but what is highlighted is not.
He's not holding himself to a higher standard. He's just trying to keep his career alive after being caught as a fraud.

No artist anywhere tells an experience exactly as it happens. Their craft is to tell a good story. Sometimes that means spinning it into a relatable tale. Taking bits and pieces of reality and turn them into something understandable and educational or entertaining.
Yeah, Chris Rock has a bit where he jokes that he writes the punch lines first and then comes up with a story to justify it.
The prevalence of comedians halfway through a joke saying "and this is true" implies that a lot of it is false, and probably a lot of the "true" things are false too.
That’s the entire point of arts. That’s what creative license is: an understanding that ART is interpretation, not journalism. Comedy, especially, is a reorganization of expectations.

My takeaway is that in his stand-up routines occasionally there are specifics that are changed or the story is told as though it happened to him when he was more incidentally involved but the base events are all real, however in his series and specials all the facts are unadulterated.

Ive always thought comedians, in any shape or form, were never as serious as I thought them out to be and this is mainly because of my mental immaturity. From what I understand, his bending of the truth got a real life person he mention in his comedy special to be doxed and harassed. I know Bret Kreisher probably fabricated a lot of his stories but I have yet to hear about anyone being haress for it.

I always found something mildly ridiculous about this whole thing. Are there people out there who expect comedy shows to be full of true stories? I always operated on the assumption that every story was full of artistic license and exaggerations because life doesn't follow a setup-punchline structure.

I don’t think it was necessarily that every single thing needed to be true and that that was why people were mad. I think it was just that the emotional connections he made with the audience was built on shared experiences of racism, and so when it was made to seem like those experiences were falsified, it felt that he "faked" experiences of racism just to get a connection with the audience. It not necessarily that the jokes weren’t true, it was that the stories they were based on weren’t.
Most people understand the artistic license that comes with a comedian's stand-up, and "Comedian bends truth to make funnier jokes" isn't a very compelling story. The journalists from The New Yorker are savvy professionals, and everything in how their piece is written is meant to heavily imply that because of this you can't trust his political work like Patriot Act.
I’m also shocked. Since when do we consider stand up comedy jokes as all facts? While the language used is rhetorical, I’ve always viewed it as something similar to a play, a story, or a song where its clear that the author took inspiration from certain events in their life and created a script to deliver jokes.

Incredible video and so insightful. Happy to see it because I’ve always looked up to you as an artist; the article really threw me for a loop. In a way, it’s a shame the article forced you to spell this out. Kind of like seeing a ‘behind the scenes’ of a fantasy film, and learning a portion of it was green screen or special effects. I think we all understand that there’s a certain amount of tweaking for narrative purposes in storytelling - we just ignore it and consciously ‘buy in’ because that enhances the experience. I think good stories are built on a foundation of truth, and it’s easy to sense when that’s not the case. A true storyteller knows what to manipulate so audiences get the best bang for your buck, entertainment wise, while the purposes of the story remains clear.
I’d like to see a single standup comedian, political or otherwise, to declare publicly that they have never embellished a single story for the purpose of their acts. Now I’d like to hear The New Yorker go on the record that they also never embellished a story or omitted relevant information from any of their articles.

This is an incredible example of going about, "No, actually, YOU'RE wrong" without coming across as a petulant child. So many cited sources, examples and recordings, it was direct and specific. Not a public performer, but I give speeches for my work. I absolutely conflate disparate anecdotes together and glue them together with poetic license. It would take 5 times longer to tell all the stories and they would be 1/5th as engaging. Like if a person days "A" on one occasion and "B" another time, and you want to show how "A, and B" is a compelling point, then just tell the story as if they were said in the same occasion! Storytellers do this all the time.
As long as you're not changing the essence of what was said by adding or omitting key details or context, then it's just about wrapping the story like a gift so other people can receive it.

Not once did I ever think comedians were telling true stories. I always saw them as great storytellers providing us with moments of laughter and relatable situations. The amount of effort placed on fact checking comedians needs to be placed on our government!

This was stating facts. I was sad for him that he had to cater to White Supremacy ideology, an irrational idea and fragility that makes any group that has been treated as a second class citizen feel like we can’t highlight the horrific nature and conditions of living through this era of White Supremacy. Some people don't get comedy, and those are the people the article is intended for. Every time I hear a comedian telling a story within their routine, I ASSUME it's a joke or exaggeration intended to make a specific point until they say otherwise elsewhere, outside the performance.

There's a reason that in many stand-up specials comedians are often in the middle of a bit and they turned to the audience and before a major part they say "and this part is 100% true" and then say part of the bit. They do that because it's quite obvious that comedy bits are nuggets of truth with comedic embellishment for the purpose of entertainment and storytelling
You can tell the reporter walked in with a perception of who you actually are. Every time you told her the truth her response was “sure”, “yeah” as if she didn’t want to believe you. She deserves reciprocates for her false journalism.
