The fact that a comedian is being scrutinized for not telling a story EXACTLY how it happened when there are literal politicians just confidently lying about facts is just absurd to me.
exactly, nitpick on the comedian but bend over backwards to allocate time for politicians to straight up lie and call it showing both sides of an argument. The nerve of these people!
This comment should be the top pinned reply. I wish I could give you a standing applause. How people can take a comedian seriously during an act is mind blowing. Stay Safe and Be Well.
You're an actual moron if you think that's the issue. Comedians make things up all the time for stand-up, but Hasan Minhaj is an activist first, comedian second. He tried to pass off flat-out lies, one of them bordering on harassing to a woman he smeared as racist despite being married to an Indian man, to become successful. Hasan Minhaj is a fraud and any idiots still giving money to him should be mocked just like Jussie Smollett.
Except it isn’t a tabloid and by right idea expected to hold itself to a higher standard. Also, these interviews are typically recorded and it would be very odd for the participant not to have access to them, they just don’t get to control what happens with them. So, essentially, it’s an example of TNY taking a shot at the wrong person to mess with and not about an occurrence of extraordinary diligence.
The reporter at The New Yorker should have a deep dive done on her life and career. I’m willing to bet that this isn’t the first time she’s done something like this.
She's definitely an agent cosplaying as a reporter. Though I will say that Hasan, given his life experience, should have known better than to give her that much access. He's already dealt with his life being infiltrated by these people before, I would assume it only gets worse as you get rich and famous.
I agree. Shame on this reporter. And, your right, he shouldn't have to do this. But, I'm glad he did. I went from loving his stand up. To later thinking he was just a fabricator/liar, and dismissing him as a comedian. To now coming full circle. I'm also glad he made his own recording of the interview.
I find it strange they’re fact-checking comedy shows and disturbing that they chose the topic of racism to gaslight. Thank you for sharing this story. I hope you continue to share your experiences and give voice to important topics.
Help us expose them: Clearly Hasan was targeted because he is brown and Muslim. They don’t want him to be part of the Daily show other than a side act. The Daily show and the New Yorker is predominantly filled with Zionists.
As a lifetime New Yorker reader, I’m horrified that this happened. And as a comedy lover, it never occurred to me that comedy needed to be literal truth. That’s not how storytelling works! Sincerely hope the very-talented Hasan Minhaj’s reputation and career fully recover.
My immediate thought is of Nick Swardson trying to express that not everything said on stage is true by acting out telling a cheetah to sit to showcase how ridiculous some of the premises he uses are. All to stop people from believing he feeds his cat diarrhea
Thank you for standing up to slanted journalism! I have always thoroughly enjoyed your show. I never stopped and questioned the details of what you were saying, but I always understood that there was an underlying truth. I, too, want America to grow in love and embrace the diversity that makes us who we are.
@@spaceforce-girlforcejjwest2048 His ability to communicate and his personal life is not a requirement. Comedy does not have to be true, but it should be funny.
Which facts did the New Yorker get wrong? Seems there are objections that things were “taken out of context” but I don’t see anything that’s been proven false about the article.
This is an incredible example of going about, "No, actually, YOU'RE wrong" without coming across as a petulant child. So many cited sources, examples and recordings, it was direct and specific. There was no shifting of blame, distancing language or major attacks of the other side-- literally just cold, hard facts from beginning to end. Excellent work, Hasan! 🤯👍
Yes, it was crazy like there was *all the documentation*. It would (to my mind) have been normal to just assume that you didn't have to document every bit of your comedy show, and every bit of the interview, but he had tapes and emails ... Probably, if needed, there'll be traces to find on the murder microphone of that "journalist" and fingerprints ... What was this? Is her dad an agent who told her they never slammed Muslim teenagers against anything? What's her motivation for dragging Hasan through the mud?
@@cnj67 Distorting information so that we all go WTF is exactly what the media does. Today, Hasan was their target, because they knew their spin on the truth would get people worked up. And it did. For a minute. But in a world where everyone can have a platform for their truth to be shared, and when they choose someone as intelligent and thoughtful as Hasan-- welp, their bullshit got exposed like the roaches they are. 🤷♀️
This is one of the first times I've seen an apology video responded with, "YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO APOLOGIZE FOR!" You're awesome. You did this right.
Which is why its a good thing it is titled as "Response" not "Apology" - as people would generalize that he lied. But he still apologies for things he should not have to.
What's really deceitful about the article is the excerpts that are highlighted in the subtitle and inserts - A reader takes these as accurate encapsulations of the content but instead they are hyperbolic distortions of the details in the story. Defenders of the story point to sections of the story that can be claimed to be more nuanced but what is highlighted is not.
Sorry I’m late to comment on this video but I recently dropped a bag on anthrax on my baby. Also you claimed the parents said they couldn’t have you come over cause they were taking family photos. Then in the audio recording you admit that it was basically a vibe of racism. Then to bolster your claim you showed an email in which this lady said her parents had grown. She probably said that cause you told her that her parents said you weren’t allowed in because you were Indian when in fact it’s because you got the vibe they were racist. lol you didn’t disprove anything. It’s probably another lie. Why would you show up to a girls house who don’t date and get mad when they say they are busy doing family photos?!!! Weird also one last thing. Yo don’t pretend your Indian parents would be cool with you dating some other than Indian. lol your proof is “oh well I felt someway about being able to interrupt a family event so it must be cause I’m black *cough cough* I mean brown but i pretend to be black cause I like hippy-hop and I’m a total sneakerhead y’all feel me?” Dude even if the story about the parents is true which why would I believe you? It’s literally a he said/she said situation and I’m sure that girl feels sorry if that did happen but just cause you sent a couple of friendly emails. What do you expect for her to hold a grudge and call you a lair? She more or less says thanks for the email, hope all is well. Also show the dates in which those email were sent before or after the article… Sorry I got to go I was held up at gun point by a cop for playing basketball, y’all know how it be.
The fact that Clare Malone (the author of the hit piece) insinuated that Hasan owed the FBI agent a "heads up", even though his job was to entrap innocent Muslims without any heads up, is both hilariously ironic and outrageous.
Because dont you people realize!!! Americans hate Muslims!! and brown people like the fact we are sitting here still having this discussion despite what happened after 9/11 and what is happening now with Israel attacking Palestinians lmfao like they literally do not see us as humans ofc theyre going to be happy to attack and ruin the career of a muslim brown man. Hasan nearly secured a bag (daily show) and some evil rat ruined it for him. Not everything is race thing or whatever but THIS IS and it is so evident. Moreso people hate Muslims with an intense rage that theyre willing to wipe out Gaza and no nation is criticizing them for it.
Clare Malone can't be spreading disinformation like this. I read one of her Trump articles and I wonder what else she has lied about Trump. She should be put in jail for election-meddling yes.
@@epicfailure210 so, she's a racist because she accused him of faking racism? What a stretch. As a black man, I do not appreciate people who cosplay at racism. If it's fake, it had to be clear. Dave chapelle story of him calling the cops and the cops coming and screaming " there is still a n___ in the house" and " why did he put picture of himself and his family on the wall?", is funny obviously fake but still deliver a message about racism.
It’s a comedy special, not a documentary! This level of diligence is way beyond what would be expected. Thanks for the honesty and sincerity and for all your work!
Totally! I am actually surprised his stories are so truthful. I always expect comedians to make up characters, embellish and mesh incidents together to tell the most compelling story. Who the hell thinks comedy programs are nonfiction?
From what I understand, his bending of the truth got a real life person he mention in his comedy special to be doxed and harassed. I know Bret Kreisher probably fabricated a lot of his stories but I have yet to hear about anyone being haress for it. Edit: My bad, according to Hasan she was not doxed nor did he lie about the racism.
Let's watch the actual video, shall we? He gave the New Yorker 4 years of emails from both of them. They ignored all that evidence, including the person in question thanking him for doing so much to protect her identity. The New Yorker wanted a hit piece
@@MrCherryzzthe girl wrote an email thanking HM for protecting her and her family's identity. She was never doxxed or harassed because no one knows her true identity. Didn't you watch the video and the emails he presented? Or are you like the New Yorker journalist?
I think I respect him even more. Honestly prior to this “exposé” any reasonable person would expect, and even require, that his standup should be loosely based in reality to not only protect those he talks about, but to enhance the clarity of complicated stories without rambling. He is a comedian doing standup, it is his job to not loose the audience and to evoke laughter. The fact that he is actually as close to reality as he is without endangering his former gf/family is actually super impressive. He’s consistently above and beyond in logic and emotional sway for his genre. If anything the article should have been about how other comedians could take notes.
But it's not the stand up or jokes that are being questioned. It is the stories he tells about harassment and race growing up which are a part of his racial identity and narrative he has publicly built about himself. The racism he experienced was never that extreme and it is stupid to tell us a false story of he and his wife going to the ER for an anthrax scare or some crap like that. I am also Indian American and grew up in a similar way as him, and did experience some mild racism as he did (as most people colour probably have) but I do not make up random tearjerking stuff to tell others. I'm saddened he was not authentic but chose the "embellishments" which is basically falsifying the narrative. His "stories" have put him a position of having to defend his own stupidity and cost him a lot. In life, reputation is key.
@@ornament318 and why you asking me that? the new yorkers did him dirty and all the major media outlets just ran with the half-assed news I didn't frame him bro, so you have to ask them why they did it
You’d think the New Yorker would have better things to do than create fake scandals. The whole thing was ridiculous, no one with half a brain thinks that comedians don’t embellish and exaggerate things for comedic effect or to make a coherent story. We love you, Hassan!
Embellish, exaggerate, of course. Fabricate for “emotional truth”? To me that gets dicey. I’m relistening to the very awkward This American Life episode where they retract Mike Daisey’s monologue about worker conditions at an Apple supplier in China. After a very long pause, he says he lied to “capture the totality” of his trip. Reminds me a lot of “emotional truth.” And if we let those “emotional truths” slide on the basis of, well, it’s comedy, it’s my understanding that he’s retold some of these stories outside of his stand-up.

Can't help but think this was all a hit job to diminish the chances of Hasan being offered the Daily Show gig. Thank you for this thorough response.
I mean, according to some reports, it was successful, according to multiple reports, he was supposed to get the gig but the article made them rethink. And I don't even fault the viacom executives for that one, given the article that move is understandable.
Thank you for being open and honest not only now but throughout your career! You are someone that I really do look up to. Your acceptance of faults and still standing up for yourself at the same time is inspiring! ❤

As an Indian woman, this is the flavor of racism we deal with. Nit-picking, gaslighting to have us meeting unfairly high standards, needing to remain very calm as we lay down rational receipts of facts. I am the first woman in my family to leave the Indian community and work/go to school/live primarily around other races, and this has been the experience. Hasan's response feels simultaneously familiar and a masterclass on how to improve my responses the next time it happens with me.

Kicking a brown man out of the race for The Daily Show host job was the objective. Someone talked to Claire Malone before she "developed" interest in Hasan Minhaj's comedy.
Just watched this on the HR article. The Bethany part is insane. The New Yorker reporter should be ashamed of herself. She had the emails and evidence, yet chose to selectively publish what suited her agenda. Wonder if the reporter will ever be held accountable?
Reporters never give minorities fair coverage. Look into how trans people get reported on. Nothing is listened to. It’s just so much bullshit and smearing
The reporter might just say that their article is based on their own" emotional truth", and the "factual truth is secondary". They've already shown a lack of respect for what Hasan is saying, why wouldn't they steal his own words and diminish them even further?
This was stating facts. I was sad for him that he had to cater to White Supremacy ideology, an irrational idea and fragility that makes any group that has been treated as a second class citizen feel like we can’t highlight the horrific nature and conditions of living through this era of White Supremacy. But this is good that he is poking holes in this irrational ideology that attacked him because he highlighted the ugliness within the current World culture.
@@bperez8656 I guess Kramer repeatedly shouting the N word during his stand up was fine? In the early 2000s, a reporter came to my high school to interview students about video games. I happily volunteered, looking forward to share the different genres and stories I'd experienced in the medium. Video games were getting a bad rap at the time, so I thought FINALLY I can share how cool and interesting these games can be. How naive I was. To my dismay, i read the article and found the reporter heavily edited my quotes to promote a piece about video game addiction. Sure, the topic is trivial but it taught me a valuable lesson on how some repooters twist truths and stories to fit their message.
It definitely sounds like this reporter, her editor and the mag were on a mission and were determined to twist whatever Hasan said to fit their pre-formed narrative. The article was designed to be a hit piece. I'm so sorry about all the things that Hasan and his family has had to go through. And I'm so angry about our billionaire-owned government and media that work very hard to keep We The People separate, confused and in our assigned places with their well-shod feet on our necks..
You don't need to say Sorry. You are one of a few smart and genuine comedians. Please stay strong and just be yourself. Sorry you have to go through crap.
You're telling me 100% of standup comedians told the truth 100% of the time until him? C'mon. Just saw him last week, he addressed it there and the audience proudly cheered for him to keep doing his thing. You rock bro, keep doing your thing.
nobody expects comedians to be just telling the truth, nobody. its amazing how easily people can be convinced that something they never cared about before is suddenly a bad thing.
I think Hasan said it best himself in the end... there is a different expectation with "funny political commitator" vs. "Comedian"... he may realize now that freely switching between those roles is not a viable option.
Yeah, it came across as very dismissive to my ear. Edit: I am hesitant to place all of the blame on the reporter, though. The editors are the ones that actually structure a piece. Of course, both could be true: she was uninterested and editorial chopped it up for their slimy framing.
I remember seeing some of these articles popping up and it felt like such a joke every time, it was hilarious and sad to skim through. I love your work man, it never mattered whether or not it was based on real events, it was still worth telling.

No artist anywhere tells an experience exactly as it happens. Their craft is to tell a good story. Sometimes that means spinning it into a relatable tale. Taking bits and pieces of reality and turn them into something understandable and educational or entertaining.
Yeah, Chris Rock has a bit where he jokes that he writes the punch lines first and then comes up with a story to justify it. The prevalence of comedians halfway through a joke saying "and this is true" implies that a lot of it is false, and probably a lot of the "true" things are false too.
That’s the entire point of arts. That’s what creative license is: an understanding that ART is interpretation, not journalism. Comedy, especially, is a reorganization of expectations.
As a big fan of Hasan, I was really struggling with the article. I appreciate the thoughtfulness, sincerity and self-reflection. I will be passing this video along to some of my coworkers who had written him off.

True, but I'm hoping it becomes a great story in the next stand-up! It's almost too ridiculous to believe that a group proudly reporting on the truth of a comedic stand up special where emotions come first as if it were a bad thing, would do the SAME THING to put emotion first, by twisting the truth! Your integrity and your reputation as a truthteller are intact in my eyes...as is your humanity. Bravo.
Just another example of The Daily Show style of “fake news” having more integrity than the so-called “real journalists”. Thanks for putting this together. It was probably more tedious for you to put together than for us to listen to. Also, despite what else is happening in the world, it IS important for you to set the record straight, because now we can continue to trust you in the spirit of your storytelling as you tackle these issues that are bigger than yourself.
Hasan- you are a gifted storyteller. You give us hard and painful truths wrapped in a giggle. Those painful truths are hard to swallow, traumatic to carry, and difficult to talk about. Your gift is making those painful truths easier for us to carry together, to talk about together, and hopefully someday work through together. YOU are a special type of healer/therapist that helps us cope with societal trauma. THANK YOU!!! Much Love and Respect for you and the gifts you share with us!!!
Not a public performer, but I give speeches for my work. I absolutely conflate disparate anecdotes together and glue them together with poetic license. It would take 5 times longer to tell all the stories and they would be 1/5th as engaging. Like if a person days "A" on one occasion and "B" another time, and you want to show how "A, and B" is a compelling point, then just tell the story as if they were said in the same occasion! Storytellers do this all the time. As long as you're not changing the essence of what was said by adding or omitting key details or context, then it's just about wrapping the story like a gift so other people can receive it. Hasan, this is an art and I think you are very skilled at it. I'm sorry such a misleading article gained so much traction.
Isn't this also how someone writes a memoir or autobiography that is engaging? If you told all the mundane details of every interaction you've had, a book would be too long to keep anyone's interest.

As soon as I heard about that story, I thought, no way are we cancelling Hasan. Everyone knows and expects comics to embellish and re-imagine stories so they hit more effectively in a standup set. That's why comedy is an art form, not a peer-reviewed journal. It infurates me that Hasan didn't get the Daily Show over this because he was absolutely the best. Thank you for this video and I wish you hadn't had to make it. You deserve so much better.
Viacom is notorious for being cheap and difficult to work with. Many report they say "bring your own suits" when on the show. Hasan can probably make more with other projects.
I mean the standup was a bit more than an art form and became political after he brought up things that many young immigrants/ children of immigrants can relate to on a personal level. @@jaimefernandez2624 I guess I don't mind some amount of comedic embellishment, but come on: An activist celebrity standing on stage, detailing traumatic events that recently happened to them and using them to support larger points about geopolitical issues - that's a far cry from a fictional movie.

I went into this really skeptical, but believing enough in Hassan's integrity to hear him out. I'm incredibly glad I did. As a journalist myself, I would be ashamed to have published this, and the New Yorker absolutely needs to retract the story, if not make MASSIVE corrections. Shameful. Mad respect to Hassan for this well thought out and transparent response. He takes responsibility for misunderstanding the line between his comedy and political personas, and I am really glad to see that kind of thoughtfulness from him.
My take was that no one was upset to find out that Rodney Dangerfield was greatly respected, it was a comedy routine. However, that routine had no effect outside the life of Rodney Dangerfield (even if he was a bit annoyed when people thought his act was reality). Hasan hits on real life issues, with very real life impacts that effect many people. It's a different realm than just a routine. The Prom Doorstep issue: agreed with the statement "It's understandable." The rest of it is deliberate muckraking against Minhaj. FBI harassment: should have used his own story, or credited the story to Hayat's life (ironic if you know what Hayat means). Anthrax scare: feels stupid to embellish when the reality is good enough. Big disappointment that Hasan will not be taking over The Daily Show due to this.
Love this. Intelligent, well spoken, and thorough. Such a bummer that a hit piece railroaded your career like it has. I for one will be pulling for you, and hopefully get the opportunity to see you in person. Huge respect for you and what you do.
This is very weird. When I see a comedy special, I expect stories to be based in reality, but embellished for comedic effect and timing. I'm not watching a documentary or news program. I never expected everything was word for word what happened. Why would I hold someone in a comedy show to that standard? That is for the news on TV and the paper (and the New Yorker). And I think it was always clear that Patriot Act was different. More facts based. You presented all the receipts! I think you've done a great job making those things clear. Shame on the journalist who wrote the article. Much love for you and your family. Stay safe.
You mean Eddie Murphy's "Gooniegoogoo" auntie falling down the steps for over 10 minutes and yelling different interjections as she briefly stops on the way down didn't really happen?! Or he didn't really get served cola with urine in it for making fun of the Asian waiter?! Man, I can't believe he's a frikkin' liar! That whole special is ruined!
Believing that comedians tell 100% factual stories and doing a story on it is a lot like doing a breaking story on WWE and that it is not a as legit as we all thought it was.
The anecdotes the New Yorker pointed out were untrue were not embellished for comedic effect. They were Hannah Gadsby-esque TED talk segments. You can’t have him hide behind “it’s comedy” when none of those sets were meant to be funny.
He told his baby daughter was exposed to a white powder thought to be anthrax. You think that it's comedic or funny? Even if it was a true story how can it be used for laughters?
The fact that a comedians work need fact checking, while a journalists doesn’t is what is upsetting. As a consumer and lover of comedy it always comes down to did I relate or not. Whose story or experience isn’t a factor in any way or shape. Go on and Prosper Hassan❤️
100%. Anyone who knows comedy should know the idea of fact-checking comedy is absurd. Comics trade jokes all the time. I know comics who have sold their personal life stories to other comics to tell on stage because they thought their friend told it better and would get bigger laughs. The idea that Fox "News" can run around and lie repeatedly and then defend themselves in court by saying "nobody in their right mind would believe anything we say... it's obviously entertainment not news" (paraphrasing) and the New Yorker is ok with that... but they think it's a worthwhile endeavor to fact-check comedy shows because by everything holy, we can't have comedy shows that aren't 100% factual is so absurd that you have to wonder what the New Yorker's agenda is. Specifically, did they do this fact-checking to any other comics, or just the Muslim one who ate Trump's lunch at the correspondence dinner?
And propagandists pretending to be something are sacred cows? Only in braindead societies where sworn enemies run the country and their Alzheimer's puppets pretend that they do.
@jasonodaniel6487 this is the most incoherent rambling I've seen on here in a while. I'm used to people disagreeing... but your comment started confidently incorrect (obvious you didn't actually watch this video because the whole point is that he used artistic license in his comedy show, and was factually accurate in the interview) but then rapidly devolved into a word salad greener than the weed you accused us of smoking. Stay in your lane psycho. Go tell Putin that people are recognizing his pet trolls too easily now and he needs to hire more intelligent people to do the job.
The irony for me is that she accuses Hasan of trying to enhance his career by telling lies. Meanwhile she is the one that clearly is attempting to do that for herself by writing this misleading article.😒 In my opinion you did NOTHING wrong. Keep going and do what you do!🙏🏽💝
"Let's take this brown artist playing the victim card and expose him in a witch hunt, in a crusade we don't tipically wage against, y'know, white artists" They made him suffer racism while probing to prove he hadn't.
Yes, there is nothing similar between stand up comedian jokes that might be made up and a serious article attacking a real person integrity! I didn’t know that standup comedian has to experience all the stories they talk about!
Not once did I ever think comedians were telling true stories. I always saw them as great storytellers providing us with moments of laughter and relatable situations. The amount of effort placed on fact checking comedians needs to be placed on our government!
Are you out of your mind. He not just an artist. The guy is a left wing propaganda machine. He made up stories of fake discrimination to support his left wing narratives. Which is not a very good thing. Comedy is different. That was straight up manipulation.
Black supremacist fragility experts who spout "Wypeepo fauwt!" and pretend they're a "comedian" with "punchlines" are political grifters who need monitoring. You don't care because you're a modernized "Wypeepo fauwt!" supremacist too. Or your just too stupid to fully understand the English language. Learned to talk as a parlor trick like a parrot.🤣🤙
I’ve been subscribed the New Yorker most of my life, literally grew up with them always at the kitchen table, and have remained subscribed in one form or another since then. I somehow missed this article and I’m glad that I did. It will be interesting to go back and read the piece. I really appreciate you taking the time to clarify because I do enjoy your comedy and I would have been so disappointed to read this story without knowing the truth.
Wow that was such a great breakdown. I'm sorry that article happened to you. Sounds ridiculously unfair. All comics create succinct versions of real experiences to make them enjoyable and funny to an audience
The reporter knows this. She was there to discredit Hasan's testimony against the wicked ways that the government operates. The article makes it seem like she's a part of that operation. It basically proves there's another layer to the persecution he describes in his standup.
I miss the Patriot Act ❤ Whether these 3 stories were your truth or not, they have happened to a brown kid in this country. Comedy is storytelling and adding “spice” to real stories; it’s to immerse in a story and laugh
How to make a good response video: * Went straight to the point * No crap * No bullsh!t * No excuses * Provides evidence to debunk these claims (emails, recordings, messages etc.) * Apology feels genuine * Keeps his cool * Consistency * Thoroughly explains why he changed the stories. Hasan has a new career: a teacher on apology videos.
No one asked you for an apology and yet you humbled yourself and gave one anyways. Those reporters and journalists have much to learn from you! Upstanding reply ❤
This is the best possible response we could have gotten. I respect the hell out of Hasan for taking his time in responding too, and for responding so thoughtfully and carefully. There's so much pressure in our news cycle for celebrities to issue immediate and absolute apologies after they've done something wrong and that's not how good apologies happen. They happen with time, after taking a step back to process and think things over. This was beautifully done. We love you, Hasan!
This is the most Hasan Minhaj response to a "controversy" I've ever seen. I'd expect no less. He's measured and fair, comes with receipts, takes accountability for unintended harm, and not a ukulele in sight. Future apologizers, take note. Much love, Hasan, sorry you have to deal with this BS. The real ones see right through it. Keep doing you.
This is hilarious 😂 it looks like Hassan got interviewed by a "Karen" and now Hassan is explaining how a comedy is written. Thank you for the free tutorials Hassan... More power to you man 🍻
He should put something in his act about a white reporter being mean to him because he's brown. NO WAIT! He should say that there were two white people who were in the KKK - NO WAIT! He should say three white woman, who lied and said they were reporters, broke into his apartment- An artist like him will surely find the best "self truth" to say on stage for $$$$$.
Thank you so much for this. I think one thing that has me frustrated, is The New Yorker could have had a really good article that delves into the idea of storytelling vs political humor, and what lines should be blurred and not. Instead, they sensationalized and misled, which perpetuates the trend of you can trust anyone and sadly that has led to the hopelessness we see in the United States.
You can pretty much hear it in the reporters voice that she was about to perform a hit. “We can provide you with the proof.” “Mhm” “I can send it to you.” “Yeah.” “We’ll make sure you get it.” “Sure.”
right? her vocal tone seemed so fucking dismissive. "and it just destroyed me." "yeah, sure. that's understandable." so unsympathetic, impersonal, not even "i understand." but her tone just says "whatever".
That’s honestly what kind pissed me off more. It just feel so gross. How do you even live yourself being this purposefully manipulative and calling yourself a journalist?
It's too bad the New Yorker reporter doesn't have the same commitment to fact-checking their story as they had for comedy. As an English educator and writer, I am disgusted at the unethical behavior of the reporter AND the publication. I appreciate you, and I admire the way you present the receipts. Sending BIG LOVE to you and your fam. Be well.
@@ra7eI had read the New Yorker article. The only valid concern was Minaj's treatment of "Bethany" of "Homecoming King." After reading HM's email exchanges with "Bethany", I have doubts about the journalist's report from her interview with "Bethany."

I can not in good conscience trust that you get this or are baffled by it. The things you write are a fiction. You are probably a psycho. I am just writing the facts. Thank goodness we have The New Yorker to write stories without a biased slant to them. Praise sanity!
Probably because of his show "Patriot Act". Hasan is way different than other comedians. He doesn't shame or make racist or sexist jokes towards any community. Instead his jokes are situational based in truth, making us think act as responsible citizens what we can do to make the world a better place. He is not biased and presents the truth. It shows his integrity. He can't be bought to portray either of the sides. Plus he is brown so that is another agenda for some people. Not all people of course. If this was UK, Newzealand, or Germany his integrity and hard work would be way more appreciated.
Woooooow... just wow. Props to who ever had the idea of recording that Interview because hearing it VS reading that article is 2 separate worlds. Your fan base (i.e. ME) really appreciates you fact checking that fact checker. Excelsior Hasan!!

@@Purni1997 aawwww, what a good point. For four years, and even now-45 says anything he wants to with zero repercussion. And then a comedian is found to have changed some details in his story telling & the New Yorker is willing to end his career. That really is a shame. I feel like it also just goes to prove the validity of the points he was trying to get across to begin with.
@@ruthhenry9577 when he showed how they stitched his words together. I've seen that many times. But seriously, when you're writing an article on truth telling, you're gonna have the nerve to curb the truth?? They should be fired.
I genuinely didn’t know people believed comedians stories. I always assume they’re made up or embellished and just enjoy them as they are because it’s COMEDY. I’m so impressed by your genuineness and how much truth was in your comedy. Thank you for being real and an incredible comedian, reporter, and human.
Comedians put on entire fake lives and they've never been called out. Larry the Cable Guy is a character. That isn't his accent. He isn't even from the South. Something tells me the people mad about Hasan won't be calling to cancel Daniel Lawrence Whitney.
@@magicalfrijoles6766 The difference is that most comedians don't claim to be telling the truth. As an NYT article pointed out, some comedian said "everything I say is a lie, including my opinions". Meanwhile Hasan Minhaj makes a whole career of "this really happened to me" and when it turns out that it actually didn't, he doubles down by calling it "emotional truth". Note how even in this video, he didn't just say "it's comedy, it's not supposed to be true". Instead, he spends the whole video trying to prove that what he said in his shows was in some way true. The whole point of this scandal is that unlike most comedians, Hasan Minhaj claims that everything he says is true.
Dude, I've seen your stand-up specials and possibly all the episodes of the Patriot Act (all amazing). It doesn't take a genius to see you're a person of integrity. I hope Sam wrote them a letter.
I've never had a problem with any of your work. As a black and brown man, there are instances that we can never put into words, and will never be understood. To make people understand, a lot of times, you have to go out of your way to connect your story to what they can feel. We miss your show, and look forward to more of your specials.
If anything I’m amazed by the amount of planning and work that goes into this work . Creating a character to shift nagging lines onto in order to preserve the perspective of your wife . That’s smart . Same for the care shown to the identity of others and the courage it takes to joke about your own life ( and of your family ) being threatened. You did a great job mate .
As a photo journalist what concerns me is the fact that Hasan Minhaj’s side of the story never saw the light of day in the New Yorker article. It was twisted beyond recognition to deliberately spin a totally different narrative. I’m not so naive to believe that people tell the truth ALL OF THE TIME, especially when people in the politics and the media, where lying has become their stock in trade but this is a prime example where someone on the left of the political spectrum when telling the truth, or at least their version of the truth, to someone on the right, where truth is instantly flipped and turned upside down to spin an opposite narrative. This happens all the time when people on the left attempt to speak their truth to people on the right. Irrespective of whether people on the left lie or not, the end result is the same, to people that n the right, they are not to be believed. Meanwhile those political pundits and agents on the right are not only expected to lie but accepted as liars, Boris Johnson and Donald Trump being two prime examples of professional liars made “good”. We really do live in the era of the inside out, especially God forbid, if you’re a good person trying your best to do good in the world. Look no further than Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn to see what I mean!
Ive always thought comedians, in any shape or form, were never as serious as I thought them out to be and this is mainly because of my mental immaturity. But as the tides across the world changes drastically, I started to realize the work these gems have put, even if it's done as a joke or satire, which compliments my mode of thinking a lot. Their work now is more credible than any news or journalist outlet we have today. Keep up the great work Hasan. Love from Bangladesh 🇧🇩🇮🇳
What a sad state of affairs these days when a magazine feels the need to fact check a comedian. People go see comedians to be entertained and laugh not for a news program. I wish people would just relax and stop trying to find insult and injury in everything someone else does. I love your stuff Hasan, don't change a thing!
nah... not even... this is what happens when a "journalist" can print whatever the f*ck they want and they know nothing will happen to them... those are 2 different things...
@@kennethalpizar32I agree. I have to wonder if there is something more nefarious going on? To willfully ignore facts....I wonder if she was paid off to do this? He seems to have plenty of enemies
It is ridiculous that you felt you had to apologize. Your show is not an autobiography. Your show is meant as entertainment. Still love & support you, sir! ❤
Wow, I can’t believe he had to say “‘I am truly sorry” so many times in this video. New Yorkers credibility is truly down in the dumps. I wonder if bill maher will acknowledge this response. Too often the first one to lie is the only one who is remembered. All the strength to you. And great that you did the Minhaj thing with the response.
Nicely done. This is a masterclass on how to deliver and apology and defense all at once. Hasan, I believe every word of your apologetic statements, and you back up every defense with clear evidence. You don't come off as overly defensive or defiant. Middle school teachers and higher should show this video as an object lesson on what it looks like to be both repentant and justifiably steadfast at the same time.
This is how you take criticism and set the record straight. Hasan didn’t furiously attack those who told falsehoods about him; he maturely, calmly, and honestly explained the truth, what happened, and how he was made to look this way, and, explained to us all what wasn’t exactly factual. There are so many people in the world who can’t take any (even minor) criticism this well, (not that I’m great at it myself yet, but I am working on it), and I truly think the world would be a better place if we could all take criticism, no matter how harsh, like this. I have adored Patriot Act since it came out and have rewatched the entire show several times. I recommend it to my friends and family often because each episode is relevant to all of our lives in one way or another, and at the very least, each episode reminded me to keep learning, keep researching, keep reading, keep growing, keep adjusting my perspective, and to always keep an open mind. Thank you Hasan. You have empowered young people like myself to continue to learn and grow in productive yet fun ways as we try to fight against the depressing realities of the world. My heart goes out to everyone in the conflict in Israel and Palestine, and it also means a lot to me that you acknowledged that because I have Jewish friends who are concerned about friends and family fighting in the war right now. Thank you again, this was very well done, and thank you to everyone who helped you put this together.
You're doing something good ...that's why they target you! Look at what they did to other great people in our nation's history. Thank you for the explanation! Keep your head up & keep doing great work. Loved Patriot Act, the specials, & you on the Daily Show!

I never seen someone add context to a conversation and my themselves look better. Sir, I truly hope that this gets out there, cause that was a hit-piece. Thank you for taking the time.
@@2LiFt3DxOwhen exactly did he do that? My takeaway is that in his stand-up routines occasionally there are specifics that are changed or the story is told as though it happened to him when he was more incidentally involved but the base events are all real, however in his series and specials all the facts are unadulterated.
We are in a special moment in the history that we hold comedians to a higher standard than heads of state.
Big fact. If they'd put this much effort into our politicians smh

Exactly my thougths. Absolutely bizarre and confusing.
Oof well said
Amen!
The fact that a comedian is being scrutinized for not telling a story EXACTLY how it happened when there are literal politicians just confidently lying about facts is just absurd to me.
Or journalists lying about facts...
exactly, nitpick on the comedian but bend over backwards to allocate time for politicians to straight up lie and call it showing both sides of an argument.
Exactly!!! The audacity
Glad Hassan & his team recorded the entire audio of the interview with the NewYorker; always protect yourself against such tabloids
You’re joking right?
Except it isn’t a tabloid and by right idea expected to hold itself to a higher standard.
Also, these interviews are typically recorded and it would be very odd for the participant not to have access to them, they just don’t get to control what happens with them.
So, essentially, it’s an example of TNY taking a shot at the wrong person to mess with and not about an occurrence of extraordinary diligence.
Man sounds like defamation to me. #UGotAmbered.
seejaneread,
Why would you say that, seems nonsensical.
The "New Yorker" is not a tabloid.
The reporter at The New Yorker should have a deep dive done on her life and career. I’m willing to bet that this isn’t the first time she’s done something like this.
you can bet, scammers aren't this ballsy on first try, they did it before and got away so they get ballsy.
Good point! Id be interested.
She's definitely an agent cosplaying as a reporter. Though I will say that Hasan, given his life experience, should have known better than to give her that much access. He's already dealt with his life being infiltrated by these people before, I would assume it only gets worse as you get rich and famous.
This is the BEST most fact checked and honest response I've EVER seen to such an article. Thank you for doing this and I'm sorry you had to do it
Yeah, I have watched a lot of standup and I have never thought everything in the show was factual. Like, it's a show, not a lecture.
Lying about him taking his daughter to the hospital after claiming someone sent him anthrax is just disgusting.

100% with you
Just what I was thinking.!
Fully agree.
My immediate thought is of Nick Swardson trying to express that not everything said on stage is true by acting out telling a cheetah to sit to showcase how ridiculous some of the premises he uses are. All to stop people from believing he feeds his cat diarrhea

The fact that Clare Malone (the author of the hit piece) insinuated that Hasan owed the FBI agent a "heads up", even though his job was to entrap innocent Muslims without any heads up, is both hilariously ironic and outrageous.

Moreso people hate Muslims with an intense rage that theyre willing to wipe out Gaza and no nation is criticizing them for it.
I wouldn’t be shocked at all to find out she had racial motivations. All of this is way too out of left field.

Bill Maher makes up stories every episode, where's the New Yorker article?
So true!!
Agreed!!
Right?

Reminds me a lot of “emotional truth.”

2). The toxic white powder falling on his kid is obviously a lie as it was never reported, and the NYC terrorism unit never investigated it.
3). The white woman whose name he publicly smeared for being racist, is MARRIED to and Indian man. He just wanted to get back at her for rejecting his offer to take her to the prom.

"unnecessary apology" is the best summary of this whole video. I understand why he did it but the idea that he even had to? Wild.

Not a public performer, but I give speeches for my work. I absolutely conflate disparate anecdotes together and glue them together with poetic license.

Stay in your lane psycho. Go tell Putin that people are recognizing his pet trolls too easily now and he needs to hire more intelligent people to do the job.
The irony for me is that she accuses Hasan of trying to enhance his career by telling lies. Meanwhile she is the one that clearly is attempting to do that for herself by writing this misleading article.😒
In my opinion you did NOTHING wrong. Keep going and do what you do!🙏🏽💝
How true!

But he is not a comedian. He is a story teller.
They're not "relatable situatuons" if they never happened.
Black supremacist fragility experts who spout "Wypeepo fauwt!" and pretend they're a "comedian" with "punchlines" are political grifters who need monitoring.
It was not lies, hasan is a disingenuous liar
Wow that was such a great breakdown. I'm sorry that article happened to you. Sounds ridiculously unfair. All comics create succinct versions of real experiences to make them enjoyable and funny to an audience
The reporter knows this. She was there to discredit Hasan's testimony against the wicked ways that the government operates. The article makes it seem like she's a part of that operation. It basically proves there's another layer to the persecution he describes in his standup.
I miss the Patriot Act ❤
Whether these 3 stories were your truth or not, they have happened to a brown kid in this country. Comedy is storytelling and adding “spice” to real stories; it’s to immerse in a story and laugh
Patriot Act is still going strong

* No bullsh!t
* No excuses
* Provides evidence to debunk these claims (emails, recordings, messages etc.)

To summarize: you speak your truth on stage and the facts on your show...works for me.
it’s really amazing how many people who like Hasan Minhaj adopt the same framing that Donald Trump‘s fans use to excuse his lies.
To explain a joke is what someone with low EQ requires.
This was SO well presented...he could be a Supreme Court lawyer.
As for the New Yorker, I will abstain from looking at their cartoons from now on...
He should say three white woman, who lied and said they were reporters, broke into his apartment-
An artist like him will surely find the best "self truth" to say on stage for $$$$$.
To be frank, that's your typical passive-aggressive liberal. They are insufferable. And I say that as a Democrat.
That’s honestly what kind pissed me off more. It just feel so gross. How do you even live yourself being this purposefully manipulative and calling yourself a journalist?
It's your typical passive-aggressive li-burrh-ulll. And I say that as a Democrat.

I am SO, SO sorry that you had to go through this. I adore you and your shows. I will follow you anywhere on the "net."
Be well.
I thought so too at first.
Then I went and read the article...
@@ra7eI had read the New Yorker article. The only valid concern was Minaj's treatment of "Bethany" of "Homecoming King." After reading HM's email exchanges with "Bethany", I have doubts about the journalist's report from her interview with "Bethany."
This is honestly a relief. I was wondering when Hasan was going to address this.
He brought the receipts
As a fiction writer, I totally get it and I’m baffled that the New Yorker would even do such a piece.
he Iied about his own chiId to miIIions of people. Jimmy Kimmel bragged about yelling and making his kid cry. what is wrong with you people? cant you just start protecting your kid's privacy...?
I can not in good conscience trust that you get this or are baffled by it. The things you write are a fiction. You are probably a psycho. I am just writing the facts.
Thank goodness we have The New Yorker to write stories without a biased slant to them. Praise sanity!
No one is, that is why people do not trust the news, media and political leaders anymore.
Drama sells.
New Yorker is a cheap tabloid.
I wonder why the New Yorker was so interested in writing this story

Of course he's gotta and gonna fact check
The fact that he's been put into a situation where he has to go to these lengths to explain himself is crazy.
Even if its not true, more than half of comics sets are made up. It’s as if they don’t understand how a joke is created
Funny thing is Presidents can say anything but a Muslim can’t say a story in a stand up
@@Purni1997 aawwww, what a good point. For four years, and even now-45 says anything he wants to with zero repercussion. And then a comedian is found to have changed some details in his story telling & the New Yorker is willing to end his career. That really is a shame. I feel like it also just goes to prove the validity of the points he was trying to get across to begin with.

Exactly!!!
Comedians put on entire fake lives and they've never been called out. Larry the Cable Guy is a character. That isn't his accent. He isn't even from the South. Something tells me the people mad about Hasan won't be calling to cancel Daniel Lawrence Whitney.
@@magicalfrijoles6766 I wonder why Hasan Minhaj is being held to a different standard?
@@ronhoward121 I think we all know why.

Agreed. Very considerate, intelligent, and impactful writing.
Literally, they could have told the true story and asked the question “where’s the line” it would have been a good article 👀
Agreed. A lot of work goes into plaining his shows

This is what happens when a journalist goes seeking a story to fit their narrative instead of investigating a story and finding the narrative.

The terrible thing about spreading public lies is that the truth never reaches all the people that were led to believe said lies.
Don't think you should expect Islamophobe Bill Maher to care much about correcting this injustice
