  • The Lexus GSF is on its last legs. It never truly competed against things like the BMW M5 or the Mercedes E63. It was never quite as disciplined. So what happens when you have it run with a totally different crowd? Today we see how the GSF compares to something less than half its price - the Dodge Charger 392 Scat Pack.

No doubt, Scatpack has better infotament, but at the end of the day, you get what you pay for. Most GSF buyers don't care about outdated infotainment. The GSF buyer is someone who wants a unique, rare, powerful, amazing build quality machine. Many GSF owners form an emotional attachment to it. The craftsmanship of the Lexus will outlast any Dodge. The Lexus GSF is a very rare and limited production car while Dodge sctapacks and Hellcats are for the masses, they are seen everywhere and everyone has them. Think about the last time you spotted GSF on the road? GSF is possibly more scarce than the Ferrari F480. The sound American muscle cars make is mostly through their exhaust systems. The Lexus induction sound offers an instant eargasm at 3600 RPM and when combined with an aftermarket system - a sound of thunder opens up. Either way, both cars are great and, although GSF is my choice, the Scatpat has a lot going and the sound of the American V8 is always classic.

While it is an unexpected comparison, these are similar because they're the last sedans on the market that still have character, everything else (especially the German stuff) is all overly techy and isolated, to the point where they aren't fun to drive anymore. They start to synthesize parts of the driving experience. These two are still refreshingly honest, and still give you a genuine connection to the road.

I am also Lexus master certified technician and can agree they have the best machine on the market and this being my first “American” car I am impressed with the technology that’s has been put into it. Reliability is their as it is a simple machine in terms of engine and transmission is a German ZF which is found on the new Supra, all of FCA products and on bmw and Mercedes. What some don't know is the piping and cat systems on these are notoriously restricting and just simply letting it breathe with intake/header/exhaust and tune if you'd like, just bolt ons, gain alot more power than almost any other car, dyno proven results. With the sound and torque increase it really wakes it up and puts it past its contemporaries.

I have to say that my experience with Dodge has been better than some of the European brands I have owned which have required frequent and expensive repairs, not to mention steep depreciation. I have owned 2 Scat Packs ( currently daily a 2019 Scat Pack Charger) and a Hellcat. They have all been very reliable and fun. It also seems that the depreciation curve of the Charger Scat isn’t very steep either. After a generous discount from my dealer, my Charger seems to be worth what I paid 18 months ago. Dodge seems to get a bad wrap because many owners flog their cars mercilessly and don’t maintain them well. It is a machine that spends a great part of its life outdoors and is exposed to the elements.
The Lexus GSF is a glorious car and much more refined than the Dodge; no contest. I have watched the market on the Lexus F cars and they do depreciate steeply until their sweet spot of $35,000. Automobiles depreciate and require maintenance. The more you spend, the more you’ll lose ( Porsche GT3 excluded) . The manufacturer sets the initial retail price, the consumer market decides future value based on aesthetics, reliability, performance , availability and perceived value.
I paid $39,000 for my well equipped Charger Scat Pack after some clever negotiating. Reliability? I paid $1500 to extend my bumper to bumper and drivetrain warranty to 8 years. 😂

You get what you pay for. That fact never goes away. Drive both of these cars for 5-7 years and see how much they are costing to keep on the road. The Lexus will still just be gas, oil and tires, the Dodge will need several trips to the repair shop, that's just the nature of American made cars. Then, put them up for sale after all that time and see what they will put in your bank account towards your next ride. The Lexus will still have a lot or worth and the Dodge very little by comparison. The Dodge will cost less, but over time and with resale factored in, not as much less as you might think. I've had my GS F for one year now and I still am in love with it. When I get out and walk away, about half the time I still look back at it, that's after a year. That's a lot of love. BTW, smoothest V-8 engine I have ever seen by a long shot. It's really hard to tell if it's running by feeling for vibration, it just sits there like it's turned off, really smooth. I may never sell it.

I just purchased a 2020 Scat Pack Charger Widebody, talk about a high performance bargain! The extra $6k is mote then worth it for the widebody, 6 piston Brembo's 305/35/20 tires on 20x11 wide wheels with adjustable suspension and active exhaust. Also the new Widebody's are underrated from the factory and pushing almost 505hp. Get a hold of one of the new Widebodies if you can and you'll agree. It worked, but over 10 years on, the finger prints added up. In 2013, Lexus redesigned the GS (a major upgrade in just about every way) and touted the no-touch system with the remote joystick as a modern update. Now people are saying that it's "old school" and want a touch screen again. Really? I traded the '09 for a '15 a couple of years ago, and once I got the hang of it, the
remote screen has been no problem. As good as that '09 was, the '15 has been the best car I've ever had. Would love a GSF just to have something so rare.

The Lexus GS F is not the best buy on paper compared to the Charger Scat Pack. But after 10 years of ownership you'd seriously regret the Dodge or to buy one used. The trick here was to buy the GS F used and the Charger new. This way you get to drive the Charger and selling it a low hit on depreciation while allowing the nearly bulletproof Lexus time to depreciation down to what you paid for the Charger. Hint: the Lexus is 200k (minimum) mile car and in the reliability side of thing the Dodge isn't even in the top 10. Just to clear I love the Charger and it's sibling Challenger and the way they both drive. But never ever really worrying about the mechanicals of your ride is priceless and this is where the GS F shines. You just put gas in it and go! My long term experience with the Toyota/Lexus products have been easy to live with very minor issues if any and mostly within the realm of regular maintenance.

@@carlmurray4840 well the scats not a glorified rwd Camry like the gsf is so there's no one rolling 4 digit numbers with them. Many who buy scats either show them off or build them since that's what people mostly use them for vs the GSF being a nice luxury car but noting much else other than just being another "ok"Lexus like every other Lexus with people not bothering to do much of anything with them other than being praised for "reliability"like that's anything special when they can just get a ISF with a 5.0 just like the gsf for much cheaper than both cars(or the same for the scat)without wasting any extra money on a gsf or rcf.

Can the Charger survive 10 years non stop as a daily driver, that won't leave you stranded on the side of the road after 200,000 miles? Will it work properly even after a good solid maintenance routine history? Or will the engine crumble under it's usage as it withers away? Will it need minor replacements that become major down the line? It's beautiful car for very different reasons than the GS-F, I want both of them and I wonder is the charger worth it?

A friend from work has a scatpack with about 100,000 miles without any major issues besides the AC But he doesn’t drive it as hard as other people do. It all depends on how you treat it and that you keep up with regular maintenance I am going to buy a hellcat after I finish paying off my E class and selling it.
