No one but Bo Burnham could make me weep over "why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side." This song brings tears every time - and his profound consciousness and sensitivity to the plight of women historically (and presently) is basically unprecedented among stereotypical "male comedians". He is the embodiment of non-toxic masculinity, and I love him so much for it. ❤️
Lol. Some men actually respect women and consider them equal in every sense of the word. Myself included. Quit playing the sex card and understand that 90% of REAL men do not discriminate against a fellow human because of their sex. This song is very deep and chokes me up every time I hear it.
@@Coheed2113allday Or, maybe you could quit projecting and playing the "not all men" card by pretending that I said that there are no men who respect women at all. I simply mentioned "stereotypical 'male comedians'", which - by definition - is not a statement about all men, due to qualifiers like "stereotypical" and "comedians". The song is literally commentary on the doldrum of domestic labour, gendered expectations, and the emotional turmoil many women experience in the face of these ("I mean, she likes her life as a mother and wife, but is that all she is?"). Maybe you don't get this "deep" song as profoundly as you think you do, and I'm not sure what chokes you up about the song if you don't understand that. Bo Burnham has also commented pretty consistently throughout his career on similar kinds of issues. If there's anyone who needs to work on their comprehension capabilities here, it's not me... Would you like to play the "not all men" card on Bo, too, because of his "Straight White Man" song? 🙄 Besides, *obviously* "some men actually respect women". My comment was acknowledging precisely that fact, by noting that Bo is one such man himself. Rather than comprehending the actual content of my comment, you expressed a knee-jerk emotional reaction to words you simply imagined that I said, presumably based on (likely unconscious) pre-existing biases that ultimately negate your insistence on being included in the group of men who do respect women. Your condescending tone and willful misinterpretation of (or fundamental disregard for) the actual content of my comment don't really work effectively to demonstrate your insistence that you ought to be included in the group of men who "actually respect women". Suggesting that I'm "playing the sex card" in relation to a song specifically about gendered issues, by an artist who frequently addresses such issues in his work, is kinda the opposite of respecting women. Maybe try decentering yourself and doing some introspective work on that.
Bo turning a simple classic joke into a touching and meaningful song, with a timely and timeless message, while adapting and continuing the premise the joke is genuinely a work of genius.
It’s always a pleasure watching your videos but every Bo reaction feels like a special treat! This song is especially heart-wrenching when you consider why Bo wrote it in the first place. It felt like he was saying to the audience, “Oh, you want a joke? I’ll give you a joke… why did the chicken cross the road?” Like, he knows that he’s a comedian and it’s his job to entertain the audience but he can’t do it without reflecting back the tragedy of the world because he’s so emotionally wrecked. So many layers to this special, I can’t wait to see you guys cover more of it.
i like how he plays the entire chord one time, so you know the theme already just off the sound, he tells the story in the rhythm so you know whenever there's a final word he lingers on, but when the song ends it feels incomplete, as if there's more to the story that your heart must fill in, and that's really, really powerful from a creator point of view, i would never dare try that, it would feel lazy or incomplete, but he has that confidence to pull it off
When he said the line about the chicken warming her eggs in the night I was instantly reminded of being pregnant, wrapped up in a blanket, talking and rubbing my belly. We really aren’t different from animals and bo burnham is a fucking genius for this. To not even be female and sympathize WITH A CHICKENS MOTHERHOOD
Hey guys, I first arrived for Bo, I stayed for you! You are adorable and so genuine. This song makes me cry everytime, it makes me sad but also hopeful. Glad you could also see so much in it. Thanks and hugs from Argentina ❤️
Is it a chicken or is it so many woman out there? Those who gave up on their dreams to raise a family? There are so many interpretations you can make with this. Loved your reaction !!!!!!
Love your deep and insightful take. We're on this constant search for this other half. Not realizing that we need to be a whole not a half person. And then we are complete But because we're searching for that other half to fill the empty .... We fool ourselves into thinking we found it in someone else not realizing it's temporary because in order to coexist with someone else in the same space you have to give up parts to yourself and compromise and meet in the middle. . But as the years pass, when you are feeling unsatisfied and unheard.... And I think some people look around and realize this is not what I thought my life would be, and did I trade safety for passion?... Relying on somebody else for your happiness means you have no control of your life if you're experience the same thing over and over which is not the reflection you recognize So you step out into the unknown and it's horrifying and it's beautiful at the same time but we need to get to the other side and see what's out there without expectation, and with full embrace ... And find what you love (art is my love). And let it kill you if that's what it takes to complete yourself. Sorry long take but I'm voice texting so it's a run away train
Not really there's only one interpretation. The idea is that we can't just look at the present state of things and make conclusions off of that instance. We have to understand that there is context behind decisions being made. Whether they seem good or bad and whether we are or aren't sure what those decisions will lead to.

Bo Burnham changed my life years ago with his introspective comedy. He continues to do it to this day with everything he releases. The most underappreciated musician, comedian, actor, writer, director of any generation IMO.
I’ve watched this a hundred times and watched all of the reaction videos and you’re the first one to point out that the lighting is like an animal in headlights and I think that’s beautiful
Here's my take. Bo has long struggled with the importance of his comedy/entertainment in a world that's basically falling apart ("I'm not a doctor, I'm a pussy, I put on a silly show" and "Laughter is the best medicine, besides ya know, medicine.") His opener on Inside "Comedy" is also a satirical take on this. So we know Bo grapples with if his craft is even worth engaging in. To me this is Bo finally taking a stance saying "Yes what I do is important." It's not about if his art actually makes any kind of difference, it's the attempt that's important. It's not whether the chicken crosses the road, it's that she tried.
It's just a song man. He never stopped working when he stopped doing stand up. He openly mocks people like you that reach trying to divine some meaning in his work.
That isn't the double meaning though. The other side is accomplishing the dreams he mentioned. Escaping her cooped up life and leaving to fulfill her dreams. The chicken has to cross the road to get to the other side, but its difficult for someone so small to achieve something so big (The road is gigantic, the chicken is little) And it isn't about a literal chicken, its a woman.
@@MatterShim I don't think its as obvious, why did the chicken cross the road? to get to the other side. Why did the sad powerless person commit suicide? to get to the other side. I don't think this is about ACHIEVING your dreams, specifically, but I agree it is about how difficult it is to even work toward a better life. Sometimes you make it across the road... sometimes you freeze in the headlights... either way you're on the other side. Why did the chicken cross the road? It was the only way out.

He is adding to the joke but it's not really adding so much as re-examining. Because it's considered a joke but not for the right reason or not that anyone knew the reason. The idea of why did chicken cross the road is what let it to make that decision. And that's to help us understand why this woman made the decision she made. Because we all wonder why someone would leave their kids or do this or do that and fail to recognize that there is context. Some reactors have laughed at this song but it's not meant to be funny

another song that is good is his country soung, it shows hia versatility with music, it isn't emotionally deep, but it does call attention to the hypocrisy of the industry. But I think one of his most emotionally filled songs is 'art is dead'
Just came across your channel and I'm very surprised you haven't reacted to anything from Harry Mack. Dude blew up over the pandemic with his Omegle videos and makes for great reactions. If you're looking for other musical geniuses, check him out.

The idea of why did chicken cross the road is what let it to make that decision. And that's to help us understand why this woman made the decision she made. Because we all wonder why someone would leave their kids or do this or do that and fail to recognize that there is context. Some reactors have laughed at this song but it's not meant to be funny
