One of the big messages behind this song is directed at the "You can't be good without God" crowd. Growing up as an atheist in the bible belt, I was told my whole life that if I didn't believe in God, I can't have a moral compass. How am I supposed to know right from wrong without having faith in an omnipotent creator? This song is a fuck you to those people, because it's really not that hard to be a good person, and you don't need faith or religion to know how to be good to one another. I don't need a book or a church to tell me to treat people with respect, not hurt anyone, and be nice.

I don't think it being a joke makes it any less genuine. A lot of times when Bo gets too serious and real, he immediately follows it up by undermining himself. In that way, his speaking parts follow the exact opposite pattern of his music, which usually start joking and ends serious. I still remember him talking about Shakespeare(?), quoting this passage with such clear reverence in his tone, only to immediately be like "What? Wtf does that even mean?"

I’ve seen other religious people get stuck on this line as well, including in this comments section. I think more religious people sometimes feel like this is an attack on their idea of god. Bo is atheist (though now less militant about it than when he was younger), so, while this may partly be a comment on how god is portrayed often in organized religion, it’s also not from someone trying to say something about god, because Bo’s worldview does not revolve around the idea of god. I think that, as in pretty much all of his material, Bo is trying to say something about people.
I look at the last lines from a more psychological perspective, in that, if you don’t love yourself, no amount of love from anywhere else will ever be enough. This is because if you don’t love yourself, if you don’t consider yourself to be lovable, you usually won’t believe love from others is real.
As always, I’ve enjoyed hearing both of your perspectives and am looking forward to your next post.

And if you live the kinda life where you can earn a love like that, then you would already also feel loved. You aren’t chasing that validation because you’re already living that life. This was an amazing reaction, I feel like you two are one of the few that actually discuss the topics that are in the material you react to instead of just saying “omg that was funny”, keep it up! I would really recommend some of Bo’s other songs like Words words words and Nerds, they are both very good, and I think you would enjoy them

I just wanna say I've really loved getting to see your guys' perspectives, especially on the Bo Burnham series. As much as you've been giving Bo respect where it's due for keeping it real, you guys are keeping it just as real in your responses. It doesn't go unappreciated.
Additionally, I love that you're getting a taste of where Bo has been in his career, because I think it gives his newer work (like the Inside special) a lot more context and clarity. And if/when you return to Inside, I really recommend reacting to the full special (in sections of course).
Much love guys. I just found you last night and I'm happily subscribed 💛

Love your reactions to Bo so far. It’s nice to see people understand what he is getting at. One thing that I do think it’s important to keep in mind as you keep going is that his earlier stuff doesn’t always have a “hidden” meaning or set up. Some of them are just funny. Like you would make when you are 18.

Loved this. Found y'all today. Really thought it was obvious which of y'all was De and which was Dre. It's wild to see you just genuinely experiencing Bo for the first time and to see you appreciate his style. I've been following him for a long time since he put out New Math on RUclips when he was just clowning... he's always been wicked smart, and since his first special he's grown so much and it's been interesting to watch his career I do think by this point y'all are both right he doesn't say anything that isn't real. The opening was very carefully thought out and performed, but it was chosen specifically because he feels it

I liked how you broke down what he says at the beginning of the song, I always just took it as a joke - like "I don't want people to ever think that I think I'm better than them - this song is written from the perspective of God." His timing is always just so perfect on how he delivers those lines.

I think the purpose of "my love is the type of thing you have to earn" is meant to be a comment on the moments where you shout to the heavens, "why god? Why is life so hard?"
In the Bible god answers those he sees potential in. But in real life, when we ask, "why god?", we keep asking that question until we realize we learned how to triumph on our own, and didn't need a miracle after all. "The love has got to come from you", really fits with that idea. Great video yall

My favorite thing from seeing lots of reaction vids to this song over the past year is that everyone has felt it has a good message, and I've seen reactions from Christians, Muslims, Atheists, and probably others I'm unaware of. Leave it to Bo to speak FOR GOD and have literally everyone agree with him (on at least some things).

  • @animal579

In the ancient translations of the original scripts there are two possible interpretations of Jesus's reponse to someone asking who god is. "God is always around you" or "God is always within us" with that second translation in the ancient context meaning more like We and God are partly one in the same being. So when Bo says "if you want love [from god//the universe] then the love has to come from you" you could interepret that both as a 'putting the same vibe that you want to receive' or literally taking translations from the scriptures to say that you must love and accept yourself and others first before you can expect external love to be received.

Comments are crazy at 4 am, interesting perspectives fellas, I think its clear bo is an atheist wonder if it comes off that way to theists. I think he is being genuine in the intro but uses a genuine moment to transition into the song cleverly, its interesting to see how much better of a performer he has gotten over the years still always had great ideas and interesting things to say but his singing got a lot better with every special.

Bo's construct of God as an atheist can be taken as a different approach to the term as well, saying "this love you want to feel is something that has to be earned". Once you do the things to obtain that love, work on yourself, treat others as you would be treated, be a genuine and good person, you won't need to seek that external love, because you won't feel the need for it anymore. You'll love yourself. Others around you will love you. I also think he wrote this line to sting Christians a bit. I am a believer myself, but the line hits home for me in a way that doesn't feel great. We are told God's love is unconditional, yet there are many conditions set in the Bible to maintain a relationship with God. Namely, accepting Jesus as your savior, and choosing to follow His path. If you don't do those things, you cannot be saved. That feels an awful lot like a condition to me, but like Bo said, if I do choose to do those things, and follow in the path of someone I truly believe to be good, I won't need to seek that external love, I'll just feel it.
Also... Dre you sound like Patrick Mahomes. It's been bugging me for a few videos, and I finally figured it out lol

That intro I feel is both, genuine and part of the bit. He doesn't want people to percieve him as correct all the time, or better than anyone because of his position in society(famous, or even more, just a person with a "different" view of life) but rather you just hopefully enjoy his jokes, and then hits you with the title of the song which is the "perspective of God" which is HELLA irony. I refer to (What.) as "Meta Bo", where he really reaches in his bits to reflect a deeper meaning or double meaning or what have you. basically, he is trying too hard to really nail in the fact he is kind of bleak, and cynical but also like listen to him complain because he kinda has a point? if that makes sense. This is probably one of my fav songs from this special. love yalls content! Would love to see you guys listen to some stuff from Words Words Words, that was his first TV comedy special

New subscriber, you guy’s are really insightful and I’ve been enjoying your takes on Bo’s stuff so far. I’d love to watch you take the NF journey (if you didn’t know, it’s called that because once you start reacting and watching his music you can’t stop). Probably the deepest rapper out there, you can start almost anywhere in his deep catalogue but might as well start at the beginning with intro. (The search is my favorite song). I think it’s called the NF journey because you really see him transform from his old stuff to his newer. He’s been through a lot of trauma and puts it all out there. Not a single rapper out there has as many fire songs though.

Been really looking forward to this and it was worth the wait!
IMO, I think you're just about done going through the earlier Bo stuff worth reacting to. Every special Bo created is a substantial refinement of his writing and craft, so the further back you look, the most interesting take away is how much he's improved and that it was impressive he was doing what he was doing so young.
Here are my thoughts on what remains from Bo that's worth reacting to.
Words Words Words - a pretty good summary of his earlier style which was often just line after line of very clever wordplay.
Art is Dead - From the same special, this was to me, the first hint that there was more going on with Bo than just jokes.
Country Song - low stakes and fun
And then... just about all of Inside :)
