    Silverblade Dagger
My dad died Dec 9, 2021. This song means so much to me now than it did when I first heard it in the mid-80s. I always feared losing him, because I idolized him so much, and he did everything for the family without complaint, without the need for praise, and without the urge to brag or boast. My dad didn't speak much, he was a reserved man, so he didn't say "I love you" or "I'm proud of you" often, because if he said those words frequently to the point they lose meaning, it wouldn't be genuine, sincere, and from the heart. They would lose the gravity of them, so he was sparing in throwing that weight around. He said those two phrases in actions, by getting or doing things to show his love for us, and show he was proud of us.
My dad and I were close, even though we didn't talk much. We didn't have to talk. We had a sort of mind reading ability, were we could do some project and know what the other is thinking. I can't really describe it, but it was just extremely cool to give him a look and you'd know he understood. It's like me and my sister, saying the same thing at the same time, or finishing each other's sentences. The only time my mom saw my dad excited was when I was born, because I had his copper red hair and his nose!
My mom and dad dated for 8 years, meeting for the first time at my grandfather's funeral. When I was a few months along inside mom, they got married, and they were married for 46 years. They didn't argue, didn't yell, never fought. They loved each other deeply, and had many happy years together. I wish every couple had their kind of love and peace!
Every day since he passed, I tell the wind or the quiet darkness of the night how much I love him and miss him. I tell about things I did to look after my elderly mother, who has Alzheimer's. I talk about all the struggles I go through having all the extra responsibility of taking care of our finances and bills, repairing what breaks, making sure we got food to eat, the tough choices I have had to make, my hopes that I get it right, and my fears of getting it all wrong. I tell about the things I did "For The Family", because I promised him before he went into the hospital, while in the hospital, and on his grave that I would look after our family, and I've done my best to keep that promise. It's the only way I can truly be like him and show how much I love him, because that's my job, that's what I do, everything I do is because of him, to keep his memory alive, and keep my solemn promise to him.
Update: Today (June 14th) would have been my folks' 48th wedding anniversary. Mom, my sister and two nephews, and I went to dad's grave today. Afterward, I drove mom around cruising since the day is absolutely glorious. As we pulled in the backyard, so my mom could get out without having to deal with stairs, "That's My Job" started on my radio. I grabbed her arm, told her to get in, and cranked up the volume so she could hear it. It took all I had not to break down while hearing it. It seemed like dad was talking through the song with each line and lyric. I mean, what are the odds that of the 1,000s of songs to play, on this particular day, and considering where we came home from, that THIS would play just as we got home?

@SebsDuran Thank you, man! It means a lot, as does this song!
My dad meant the world to me, and he meant the world to my family, and there is no better way to honor him than living the example he set for us. I think in this day and age people don't give good fathers the credit that they are due, and like in my case, they don't fully appreciate things until they are gone. My dad sacrificed sleep, personal comfort, free time for himself, aches, pains, and more to not only provide for our family, but make sure our needs and wants were met before his, even up to the time he died at 80 years old. He worked 3rd shift, so that he could be home and grab some sleep while we were at school, so that he could be up in time for us to be home from school so he could spend time with us. He was at every school function we had without fail. He helped us with school projects. He was even a Den/Pack leader when I was in Cub and Boy Scouts. He had a couple side businesses to help to provide for us, and some of which were useful in teaching us things like home maintenance and being an entrepreneur. He taught us how to fish, how to hunt, how to do basic car and home repairs and upkeep, and how to be fully functioning adults. He was there when we had to go to the hospital for stitches, broken bones, medical checkups, and even 5 years ago when I had a stroke. His patience, as well as his humor, was legendary. Even with all these things I don't think it completely sums up my father's love for us, it ran to depths I am only now starting to fathom, and it breaks my heart that I'm only fully appreciating it all after he's gone.
As a teenager, I was quite rebellious. Dad and I had our struggles during this time, but no matter how much of a turd I was, he still was there when I needed it. Eventually, I grew out of it and matured, and my relationship with my dad really grew. He shared in the joy of my successes, and encouraged me though my failures. He also knew when to kick us in the butt and motivate us to not be lazy.
When my dad died, it fell on me to look after our family. I don't have kids or a wife of my own, and I didn't have any debts or major responsibilities before this. So having it all fall upon my shoulders at once was a bit of a shock to my system. I went from zero debt, to dealing with a significant amount of debt from my dad's estate which was thrust on my mom. Since she relied on my dad to deal with the financial things, she didn't know what to do or how to deal with it, and since she is nearly deaf and has Alzheimer's, I set up a power of attorney so I can do the necessary things in her stead. When things break, I fix them, or get someone to fix them. When bills need to be paid, I pay them. When the property needs to be maintained, I do it. My sister helps with mom's medical situation with doctors visits and prescriptions. When we need groceries, my sister and I tag team getting what we all need. I don't do these things out of obligation, I do these things out of love. Love for my dad, love for my mom, and love for our family. The sacrifices my dad made for us then, me and my sister are doing now. In doing these things, we feel closer to him, and understand and appreciate him all the more. It isn't the words that say it, it's the actions, and that is the lesson I learned the most from my dad that say "I love you", and it means so much more! So I am hoping that somewhere up there in heaven, he's proud!
Thanks for the video and taking the time to hear my story, and how this song is so deep and touching. Music is magic, and good country music like this reaches the soul in ways no other genres can quite touch!

I was adopted at birth, it was never a secret. When I turned 18 my dad took me camping, sitting around the fire hoisting a few beers. My dad handed me an envelope and said it contained all the information he had for me to go find my "family". I didn't open it and tossed it into the fire. I told him the only family I needed was sitting next to me, and mom waiting for us back home.

When she reached adulthood, I asked her if she wanted the information about her biological family. She said no, she has a mother and daddy and wasn't interested. Now we have her, her husband, and precious grandchildren. I am so glad someone else feels as she does. Bless your dear parents.

What a very precious song!!! Sebs, my stepdad CHOSE to be my daddy when I was 7-1/2 years old. In March 2018, my mother had trouble breathing and went to ER. She was diagnosed with end-stage pancreatic cancer and died a week later. We knew my daddy was dying from colon cancer that had metastasized to his liver and lungs, which spread to his bones and brain in the last few weeks of his life. My daddy asked me to be his caregiver. My daddy was the best!!!! Before I leave his earth, I want to change my last name to my daddy’s last name. One doesn’t need to be related by blood to be family. ❤️❤️❤️

I had a horrible dad. My mom though... absolutely amazing. I used to sing this song to her at Karaoke but changing the lyrics to fit my mother. She was a huge Conway Twitty fan. She actually saw him in concert a few days before he died. Every time I sang the song for her she cried. But I knew it was out of love.
She passed in 2002. I miss her every day. She was more than my mom, she was my best friend. I'm a self confessed mamma's boy and proud of it.

I didn't meet my real father until I was 15 , only reason I did was by accidentally meeting him in public with my mom. Even then she didn't tell me right away. I asked why did that guy ask you how's my boy? And why do I look just like him?.... she told me my step dad wasn't my blood father. The whole family knew except me and I felt side swiped by a log truck. I set up a meeting with him and asked him why he wasn't there. He told me the best thing he could do at the time was stay away from me and just help financially. He was a highly functional alcoholic and owned a custom cabinet shop. I would visit his parents growing up with my mom and always thought they were family friends. Later around 27 he calls me and tells me he has cancer. He was only 50 when he died of brain cancer but that last year I spent every moment I could with him. Even tho I didn't have but a few short times with him something naturally broke inside me when he passed. I am grateful for my step-dad being the father he is to me still to this day in his odage. I have 2 children that aren't mine that I've raised with my wife for 15 years. One is 17 and one is 15. I treat them like my own bc they have a mostly absent father. My daughter the oldest dosent even acknowledge her real dad, the 15 yo son tries to have a relationship with him. Fathers aren't always blood I guess is what this soapbox rant is about. Anybody can make a kid but only a parent can raise one regardless of blood.

Dad had a beautiful voice and I spent hours sitting there watching and listening. I can still see him and hear his voice, the emotion in his voice was evident even to a 10 year old kid. They were great parents and grandparents; thank you for bringing wonderful memories alive again. God bless you and yours.

Conway Twitty was always considered the Elvis Presley of country music. He had probably 50 number ones or something like that. Something crazy that you wouldn’t expect and the day he died. I was on the way to Ocean City Maryland with some friends and I force them to listen to his greatest hits, because I had to show the man the respect he deserved on the day he passed.

Conway Twitty is my mother’s all-time favorite vocalist and country star. I couldn’t stand him when I was a kid.
As an almost 46 year old kid? I absolutely love the guy’s music. He really was pretty great.
A good song of his that you should listen to, other than the usual hits like ‘Hello Darlin’ and the usual hits is ‘It’s Only Make Believe’. It was his first hit, a 50s Doo-Wop type of song, before he moved to country music. It’s one of my favorites.
Yeah, my dad is 76 years old and I know that he’s already passed a man’s statistical expiration date and that any day he wakes up is yet another gift from the Lord God. I’ll be 46 this 18 April, and I’m a pretty tough guy. I’m a fairly manly man.
When he does pass it will destroy me. Mom as well; she’s already living with one foot in the grave with her bad, bad health and if he passes before she does I know that she’ll follow not much longer. I honestly don’t know how I’ll get through it; my poor daughter is going to have to be a shoulder for her daddy to cry on! I know it’s life, and that we all have to face the deaths of our parents if we are fortunate enough to live a long life, and that we all get through that loss eventually. But man, it’s gonna wreck me. I’m going to be a mess when they go.

I had a very vivid dream seeing him at his funeral and three weeks later (day before his birthday), I’m an EMT but you NEVER expect “the next call” you run to be your dad 😢. Feeling completely helpless as a professional and a daughter haunts me every day. I have about 560 songs on one playlist and I ask him to let me know he’s there and within the next 3 songs, this song plays. He’s always with me and I have to hold onto that. ❤

The last verse kills me. The whole thing kills me. But that last verse Conway is saying it back to his dad. He says, “ I say, ‘Daddy, I’m so afraid. How will I go on, with you gone this way? How can I come up with a song to say I love you? That’s my job. That’s what I do. Everything I do is because of you, to keep you safe with me, that’s my job you see…”
He’s saying it back to his dad and is, I like to imagine, saying that he wouldn’t be able to do what he does without the job his father did. Now he’s doing his job and that’s the most beautiful thing about this song to me after all these years.

Oh wow. You have an awesome Dad. I have a similar story about my father-in-law. Kenny, my husband and his Dad, Kenneth, had a falling out years ago. Kenneth was a truck driver all of Kenny's life. (this info is significant to the story). In 2008, when the economy went to pieces, Kenny left his failing job and went to truck driving school. After school and about a month with a trainer, he was out on his own. It was in December of 2008 that Kenny called me and he was scared to death. He was in Oklahoma in a blinding snow with ice packed under the snow in the dead of night. I tried to get him to pull off somewhere but he was afraid to because he could not see well enough to safely do that. I really did not know what else to do. I told him to hang up and call me back a little later because I was really no help. So, I thought to myself that there was only one person who could help him and that was his Dad. I called him and his first response was, "what do you want me to do about it"? I told him that if there was ever a time that Kenny needed his Dad, it was right now before something terrible happened. He called Kenny and after getting him calmed down he explained to him what he needed to do and how to see where other drivers were going without being able to see the actual trucks. Kenny made it to a safe spot for the night and he and his father talked every single day after that for the 4 years that Kenny drove. Pride should never get in the way of any relationship!

I didn't have the best parents. I was not left out in the cold though.. I was blessed with incredible grandparents that I could mentor and strive for, and I did successfully. All four of them were amazing and astonishing human beings in what they achieved in life. All four of them very unique, and all four characters. 😁
My grandpa Harold (an original cowboy, help build the country), was incredibly intelligent. I mean they all were. So when I came for a visit one year long before he passed. I had just discovered Conway, so I thought I was going to impress Grandpa Harold by talking about him. First thing he said was, "you know his real name's Harold Jenkins".... Of course it is Grandpa.❤🤗
I am a firm believer in become now, who you wish you were. If your parents aren't the best or not worth a damn, rest assure, there is someone in your lineage that was. Look to them, and count on you to become your number one. That's your job, that's what you'll do.❤

I was raised on Conway Twitty and Hank Williams Jr. I lost my dad 12 years ago to cancer. I thought I would die without him. I still wonder some days as it has become my mission to care for my mother in his absence. She has been diagnosed with Parkinsons and dementia. My Dad and God prepared me for these moments. Some days I forget that. Thank you.

I fall into the wish category. I was my father's only child. He met my daughter once and never met my son. I was fortunate to marry a much, much, much better man. He is the biological father lol. We have been married 31 years. He was the daddy in the song. He had a horrible upbringing and he would do anything (and has) for our kids. Sometimes, I think he goes overboard but they will never doubt how much he loves them. We don't have money but he will drive 3 hours one way to fix our daughter's car, house etc. He is amazing but not coddling. They are 100% independent. Considering where we came from, I think he is incredible. Appreciate your GOOD dads, even if you don't understand them. Some of them would take a bullet or do anything for you.
From someone that didn't have that, cherish it, even if you don't want to be told what to do. Think of it this way, at least someone cares enough to try to correct you so that you don't go down that road.

When I was in my early 40's I was sent to the hospital for an involuntary stay. I had 2 cats, but no friends to ask to care for them. My family was spread out over several states and none were close by. I knew I couldn't ask either of my brothers for help, and my mom had passed years before. I could only ask my dad. I didn't know what he would say, but my experience with him to that point was that he would either say he couldn't help or would say he could help but not follow through. But as I said, there was no one else to ask. When he got on the phone, I immediately started crying. This startled both of us because it was unlike me. When I told him I needed him, he said he would leave right then--and he did. He not only cared for my cats, he stayed for a cpl weeks to make sure I was ok. We found out a lot about each other during that stay. He told me that he thought I didn't care for him bc I was so emotionally distant. I told him that my experience had led to be believe, "I might as well take care of myself. Nobody else is going to do it." That's when his eyes teared up, and he said that it was his job to take care of me. He wasn't referring to this song, which I just now listened to for the 1st time. He just meant it at face value. It was emotional. We worked though a lot of problems during that stay and continue to be close to this day. He's getting old enough now that he needs me more than I need him in some ways, but I still need him. I didn't make it past the first verse of this song before started crying. I love my dad.

Now I'M crying. My sister, youngest daughter, and I were all talking late last evening, after our Monday night Bible study. We were discussing the fact that Jesus did not tell His disciples to go PREACH (or judge or condemn others). What He did teach them to do was to spread the "Gospel of the Kingdom," which throughout the New Testament is described as, "...healing the sick, cleansing the leper, casting out demons, and raising the dead."
Jesus (who always mentioned that He never did anything without seeing and/or hearing His Father say and/or do it first), always led by example. That was His job. Speaking of that, led to our personal description of that process, as "building legacies." We didn't mean leaving money to someone, etc. We meant leaving the memories that help following generations of family learn how to "do life," and how to pass THAT on to the next generation, etc., etc., etc.
That's what our Father has done for us every single moment since Adam's creation and first breath. That's what God expects from us. If we take that attitude and simply do what Jesus said to do, in every aspect of our lives, then His legacy is still working. Sometimes there are things that happen that make us wonder where or not it's working, but then God reminds us, "It's OK! I'm still here. You are still covered by the blood of Jesus. That's my job."
Contrary to what some people think, it's NOT our job to go around judging and condemning others. It's our job to spread the LIGHT, the LIFE, and the LOVE of God, in every way possible (and there a TON of ways to...heal the sick, cleanse the leper, cast out demons, and raise the dead).
Both my mom and my dad are gone from Earth, now. Daddy died at age 54. He raised us that way...to be conscious of what we do in life, so that we can pass on the things that are necessary to and for the next generation. Mom passed away in 2014 (at age 90)...leaving behind her the same type of legacy. My younger-younger brother (the younger of my two younger brothers) passed away in 2009 (also at age 54). He had come out of pretty much a train-wreck of a life, into a life of strong, strong belief in the Lord. The legacy he left for his wife and daughter are now being passed from them to the next generation, as well. My older brother only lived 10 days after his birth. I often think, these days, of how Daddy, Mom, and he are enjoying being together now. What a blessing!
My husband and I have six children (four were mine, one was his, and we added the sixth, in 1985). Those children are now passing the same legacies down to their own children (we have 22 grandchildren at this point in time, as we approach our 40th anniversary), and through some of those, there are now five great-grandchildren who are being taught many, if not all, of the same values with which Mom and Dad were raised, we were raised, then all of them have been raised.
I thank God every day for HIS legacy--handed down and bringing life to and through so many thousands of generations. Hallelujah! 😀

My Dad and I always listened to this song, He passed in 2015 from Lung Cancer, and now this song is haunting for me to listen to. You take parents for granted, until they are gone, and then you feel like half of you is no longer there. My Dad was my mechanic, Mr . Fix it, The Answer when I could never find the right answer. Now I am in this world, and things happen, I go dial and remember he won't answer , and I feel lost. This song reminds you to value parents, grandparents.

It's the honesty in how he sings "Daddy" that unlocks the door of the heart. There's a truth in the way Conway delivers that one word that we can all relate to because we've lived the innocence of childhood calling on our fathers for comfort and strength. Add to that the confidence with which he sings "That's my job. That's what I do." It encompasses that sense of safety we got as children when our father would tell us that everything would be ok. It's incredible the way Conway Twitty was able to bring those kinds of experiences and emotions to life in this song. I was around 20 when it was first released, and it made me cry back then. I am now in my mid 50s, a father and grandfather, and the song still makes me tear up when I hear it.
