In 2023, to coincide with the release of Foo Fighters' new album "But Here We Are", Dave Grohl has been spotted using a white version of his iconic DG-335 Gibson guitar. I decided to create a replica of this guitar using a chinese copy of his black guitar.

Great work all around. Refinishing is a long process. Someone once told me that guitar building is 90% sanding. The other 10%...also sanding.

I just had to reach out and tell you how much I adore your White DG335 guitar project. It's seriously amazing! The amount of time and effort you must have put into it is mind-blowing, and the end result is beyond words. That stunning white color you achieved through sanding and painting is absolutely rad. It's like having Dave Grohl's guitar right in front of me! I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for your incredible talent and for sharing it with all of us. Keep doing what you're doing and keep on rocking!

My heart sank too when you showed the broken headstock and could feel your pain at every hurdle. But you demonstrated great tenacity and patience and it shows in the finish. Great work and look forward to your next video

You did a good job, especially for someone who admitted they are a novice at it. The difference between you and me (and anyone else who's ever done this) is you filmed and broadcast your setbacks and ours were private. One piece of advice I would give anyone who is going to do a headstock repair is to give the glue several days to fully cure. If the finish goes on before it's fully cured, you can have some issues in the future. But everything is fixable if you have the time and desire.

Watching your video was awesome. I just finished my first DIY painting of a kit guitar and man I feel your pain. Took about a month in weather that only got to around 50 degrees. I did an SG style guitar which made it easier. I to will never paint another guitar. Oh and your head stock getting broken sorry but that made me go “OH No” then burst into laughter. Great video good luck. If you want to see how my paint job came out let me know and I’ll send you a pic. Happy jamming

You sir, are a legend! What an amazing undertaking- kudos to you!
Even with the ‘hiccup’ you had - you persevered and ended up with a really really cool and almost unique guitar!
I also have a chibson. Unfortunately mine pretty ropey and has intonation issues which puts me off advising people.on getting one. Why can’t Epiphone release an affordable version - they already have so many signatur models - I’m sure they’d clean up with a DG model.
Thanks again for taking us on your insightful journey!!!

I've been looking forward to this since seeing the TikTok you posted about it. Seems I'm late to the party by a couple of weeks, but glad to have watched it. When the part came with the cord hanging and no guitar, I knew what we were about to see, but didn't stop me from feeling a bit of that pain for you. Great job on the repair. At first, I was really hoping you'd redo the binding in black, but I actually ended up really digging the color of the binding against the white. As for the bit of black bleeding through or the bits on the headstock that might stand out, you could also buy one of those car paint pens, or a posca pen, and fill in those spots, but I dig the bit of character it gives the guitar and how it speaks to the journey it's been on.
Great work. Killer music in the background too.

The first ( and last) start from kit guitar project was a dg335 copy using all the Gibson spec parts. It was so fulfilling when it finally made sound. I look at it and say I did that. I thought I’d start out easy with a 335 wiring and painting project. I did smile when I was done. And it sounds half way decent. But look forward to getting a real one maybe some day. Hello Epiphone. :)

I encountered the same challenge with a black guitar but didn’t dare to paint it. I solved it with buying white glass sticker (to cover a window, quite common in the Netherlands) at the hardware store and put it on top of the front and headstock. Not as nice as a paintjob, but unnoticeable during playing.

The best youtube tutorial on guitar finishing is the one on Stewart MacDonald's channel with Chris and Matt from Driftwood Guitars. ruclips.net/video/ntsiNsaaNHM/видео.html. They show Everything in a three part series. It is three parts because yes, it takes time. Prep and mask everything really well you don't want painted. Its all about the sanding and getting the surface smooth enough to start. Then carefully spraying on light coats so you don't get any drips and runs and building up to a nice solid finish.then scrape the binding carefully with a razorblade, and go sloooooooow. The most time consuming for me is the lacquer. Again you do many light coats and wet sand between each coat (If you really want a super nice finish) and carefully polish after. If you don't have a big buffing wheel (like Gibson uses at the factory and how all pros do it.) a buffing attachment for a hand held powered drill is nice. Just put on a good buffing compound and buff away slowly and carefully not concentrating too long on one spot, (To prevent finish burn) but swirling all around. This is what really shines and smooths the instrument to that super glossy look. It just takes lots of time and effort and knowing when to stop adding layers of lacquer and just buff it up. It's all in the video series..

Sucks about the headstock break, but on the bright side it’s another skill learnt. And makes it nearly an authentic Gibson
Overall I think it looks great, and it’s semi reliced already

I was considering trying to find someone to make me a custom decal that says "But Here We Are" in the same font they used for the album. I'll have to look into custom waterslide decal makers!

    love your DIY.
I also have a CHISON version, but it's been pushed in the corner for a long time because the unmodified version is terrible. The hyped price of the DG335 kept me from really owning until this year I bought a black Shinichi Ubukata Epiphone335 as a replacement, which Dave used in the Shame Shame MV, and the GIBSON prototype is said to have been designed by DAVE.
The white DG335 is really tempting, though, while the blue version is the most iconic, if it's priced at around $3,000 next year, I think I'll finally have my first GiBSON after twelve years of falling in love with FF.
