Dude, watched this whole video and thought you had like 100k-600k subs and after the video is over I see a measly 2000? You gained a subscriber after this one! Gotta support the grind for that 335 man.

Not only a review, but a personal journey too; thanks for sharing. Your playing was great! I ordered the Epiphone DG-335 in the UK... still more time to wait on its delivery (a lot of people ordered apparently); good to know it might be more silver than blue. Can't wait to get hold of it and set it up.

JEEJ, you're just like all of us man. Once a Foo, ALWAYS a Foo, fan that is. No shame lol. I saw them live FINALLY after becoming a die hard fan in 2005 when I received a copy of the In Your Honor CD and then my junior year of HS receiving Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace. Fast forward to May 1st of this year, I saw them live in Dallas, TX and... I'VE GOT ANOTHER CONFESSION TO MAKE, after seeing them live, I'm even more of a fan now than ever. Dave Grohl is just such a musical hero of mine and I love him and appreciate him so much more. They played the song, Medicine at Midnight which is super groovy and that completely changed the way I view them. I used to think "all of their songs sound the same." Boy was I wrong and humbled. My dad came along too and now he's a Foo Fighters fan.

Thanks for the deep dive...you and i were chatting about this on Reddit. Love your review. Your Chipson must be a really good copy. I thought mine was too until i held the Epiphone and noticed the differences. In my case i also noticed the bridge being set a little further back on my Chipson. I too had changed out all the electronics in my Chipson and agree with you about the comparison between the 2. Anyways....Great video! "Oh yeah, it will be mine"

    Very good and different review.
This should be the most meaningful review about DG-335.
Many years ago, when I was a student, I saw a video of you upgrading to CIHSON, which is very respected. I also have a similar guitar, but the set up and playing experience were too bad, which made me give up early and switch to playing other guitars.

    • @luodave9366

Last year, I found a EPIPHONE Shinichi Ubukata ES-355, which is very similar to the black DG335.
Its set up and feel are better than other EPIPHONES I played before, so it naturally became my main guitar.
When the EPI DG335 was released, I was very excited and wanted to buy one.
I'm from China and FOO is not that popular here, so it was easy for me to try the EPI DG335 this year.
I felt the same way about it.and was especially disappointed with the paint. I don't really like GIBSON's paint, but in EPI's guitars, the paint is not good either.
After various comparisons, I felt it was not as good as my 355, so I gave up the idea of buying it.
For those who want to try the EPI version, I would recommend "Shinichi Ubukata" mode, but for FF fans, it's always good to have new DG guitars released.
I also want to hear your thoughts on GIBSON LOPEZ 335 and GIBSON DG335.
I'm not a big fan of GIBSON, but I do love Foo Figthers and DG. If GIBSON re-releases DG335 in the future, I think I still buy one.

For me, being a little older than you, Foo Fighters late 90s, early 00s is it for me, and the Gibson Explorer is where it's at. I have a few of them, same era. I have a 2014 Trini Lopez, I had always wanted one since reading that Dave used one in a magazine article from 2000. I bought the Epiphone DG335 just because, and honestly I like it more than I thought I would.

Thanks to Ron for trusting Jeej with your beloved Gibson DG-335!
Sorry this comment is gonna be long, but hope it helps the channel. Might give you some ideas for follow up videos and future content!
I’m hoping that the next couple of runs from Epiphone will get closer to the Gibson. Tonally, the demos I’ve heard sound just like the Gibson. I can’t speak to what’s going on up at the headstock with the strings pitching over more than on a Gibson. Do the actual Firebirds made by this same Epiphone factory also have a history with this same headstock/string issue, or was it just this run of DG-335’s? Would a good setup and/or new nut be able to fix this problem or is it the position that the tuning pegs are being drilled into the headstock. I mean, those are also things that can be improved in future runs. I haven’t heard anyone say it affects playability or tuning stability above all, but it clearly would put more undue tension on a headstock that is pretty fragile to begin with.
It’s getting the color right that is the big problem on such an iconic signature guitar. I wonder why Gibson wouldn’t have helped the Epiphone factory color match to the Pelham blue and how it got the green light for production. I mean, Epiphone has produced other Pelham Blue color guitar models - do they also have this same problem with the color being much more silvery-leaning than blue-leaning? I don’t recall anyone ever mentioning that other models didn’t closely match Gibson’s Pelham Blue until the DG-335 was released. Makes me wonder if this could have been predicted or is just a problem with this model that nobody expected until they really started shipping. Has anyone tried asking Epiphone why this Pelham Blue doesn’t match more closely and whether there are plans to improve it in future runs? I’d be curious to hear their response.
I would love to know if you have ever played the Epiphone Modern Figured and the Emily Wolfe Sheraton before. Lots of people can’t afford the Epi DG-335, but also don’t want to take the risk of buying a knockoff that may end up being unplayable or will require major upgrades. There are great Epiphones under $899 (some with a case!) that I’d love for you to check out as alternative possibilities for playing FF songs. The Modern just seems like it would be a more versatile guitar with four knobs, though I don’t think they have a split feature like most of the Modern models. The Emily Wolfe (comes in white and black, but same specs I believe) has those diamond f holes yet only three knobs. And of course, there are a bunch of other 335 models from Epiphone that could also work, but I didn’t check the specs and which pickups/electronics come closest to Dave’s config that might get similar tones. I keep wondering what it would take to get Dave’s tones with these much less expensive guitars with all the stock electronics and pickups.
And I’m sure there are guitars from other brands that would potentially be great options for FF tones. I keep looking at the new WVH semi hollow as a possibility. Or what about other brands like D’Angelico, Yamaha, etc. with mid-tier models that are really well received? Maybe you can make a future video or even an ongoing series of videos that investigates alternative semi-hollows that are capable of getting those distinctive Dave tones. And what about using other types of guitars like Les Paul’s, Strats with humbuckers, etc - it won’t be exact with a solid body, but I bet you can get pretty close with great mobile app tones. Or how about experimenting to see if you can even replicate Dave’s acoustic tones? You can show people how you got there with the guitars knobs, a few popular amps people tend to own or gig with, and/or pedals - I think some FF fans want to get as close to the way Dave gets his tones as possible, but obviously for people on a budget, the less is more approach is also important to show. This type of content could also help you get some brand sponsorships and/or gear samples. I’ve never seen anyone do this sort of video series. It could really help you earn some $$$ while helping lots of us out here who can’t afford expensive gear and need other options.
Thanks so much. Sorry the Epiphone didn’t work out for you, but like I said, maybe a future one will be closer to the real deal. I hope you’ll be able to afford the real deal someday - I’m glad you had an opportunity to borrow one from Ron! That’s insanely generous and trusting of him. Cool guy, clearly. 🤘🏻🎸❤️‍🔥😎

If you are looking for the answer in EPI products, I think EPIPHONE Shinichi Ubukata ES-355 is better. It looks very similar, has an ebony fingerboard, and the paint is better. It has BIGSBY and is $100 cheaper.
DAVE also had the GIBSON Shinichi Ubukata version in the MV.
From my experience, the feel and paint of Shinichi Ubukata 355 are better than EPI DG, and the noise is the least among the EPIs I have played.
But my favorite EPI is still the Japanese CASINO
Of course, it may also be individual differences. We all know that the quality control of GIBSON and EPI is very poor. In comparison, the individual differences of EPI will be smaller.

I bought mine the day they were released and it was delivered the next day. I posted elsewhere that someone had definitely spent time setting my guitar up before it was shipped to me. The nut was fine, intonation was within a couple of cents for all six strings, string height needed only the slightest adjustment so, straight out of the box, I was duly impressed. I will confess, while I didn't buy this one because it was a DG tribute, more so, I bought it because it filled a desire for a semi hollow body that was a bit different than a standard Epi 335 ( had considered the Epi Ubukata 355 but don't need a Bigsby). The biggest plus for me was the neck. I own an AO 50's Tele and that statement, alone tells you what kind of neck I look for in a guitar. I will probably pull the harness and check the values on the pots (yeah, yeah, yeah, I know they are CTS but I have no idea how well matched they are), ditch the orange drops (if that's what's in there) and probably upgrade the tail piece (if not the bridge as well). I am well less put off by a $1300 Epi than I am a $6000 Gibson. I don't buy guitars to treat them like financial investments, I buy them to play and extract as much as I can from them, musically. I enjoyed your video and have subscribed. I'm sorry the DG-335 you played at the store wasn't up to snuff and you were turned off by it. Like you said, there are those that will love these guitars and I'm one of them. In the end, it was really nice to see you have an opportunity to close out the video playing the guitar of your dreams, the Gibson model. I hope one comes your way sooner than you think. Cheers!

I can relate this video😊 In East Asia, Ubukata Shinichi 355 is similar to this DG 335(not in hardware but in fame).
Gibson released Gibson Shinichi Ubukata 355 vos 150 limited run in 2017. And Dave participated in the design of this guitar, so Ubukata gave one of his signature to Dave as a gift, the one Dave smashed in 'Shame Shame'.
The price of used ones went up between resellers and picked to 12000 dollars. Now, all gone and only one prototype is listed in Ebay. Gibson Japan released Epiphone version of Ubukata Shinichi signature twice. First not Inspired By Gibson, second 'Ver.2' was Inspire By Gibson. I bouth both of them. It was very good, especially the second one 'Ver.2' was really good. And finally I could find used Gibson signature listed for reasonable price and bought it. I hope you can get Gibson DG335 one day!

Great video. I had similar experience when I listed over the Noel gallagher Epiphone. Went to play it at the Gibson garage in London and was massively under whealmed by the riviera in person. I did not buy it. As I have a 90s 335 Gibson dot which wipes the floor with feeling of the epi. The epi did not have the wow factor I was hoping for. I am hankering after the epi 335 but will take a slower approach before rushing out to pre order it off the web.

This is the words of someone who isn’t a massive foo fighters fan but a big guitar nerd.
I also paint and obsess over colour. In the best photos the DG 335 has s gorgeous vibrant blue.
That blue on the Epiphone is so muted that for me that’s a deal breaker.
I love epiphone, I’ve tried some epiphones that all felt great and sounded great. Part of me really wants a DG. I love trini Lopez’s, I love that they combine the design of different guitars.
I hope that one day epiphone gets that colour right.

I got my Epiphone DG 335 today. The store manager said a lot of the guitars on the first run (into NZ) didn't come with cases big enough. So while in transit sometimes the weight of the guitar body would push down on the headstock and cause the cracking. Luckily mine had this issue fixed with the 2nd run

I just got the Epi DG 335 and mine is definitely more blue than what the other examples you showed. Not sure if I have the 2nd or 3rd run, but it's very much blue and not silver. Once I added up all of the pieces (Gibson pickups and electronics, Grover tuners, hard case, unique headstock and neck carve) $1299 was still a lot... BUT the very cheapest Gibson 335 is $3k + . I also had a 2023 Epiphone 335 inspired by, and I will say the DG blows it out of the water. Mostly the pickups, but overall just better. It is still and Epi and needs a proper setup, but that's to be expected.

I actually dig the Epiphone colour being kinda Metallic Ice Blue and it gives it a chance to be your own guitar. I am obsessed with Pelham Blue, but also feel Dave Grohl really owns the colour 😅. But I get it, you'd naturally expect a signature guitar to be exactly the same as the original.
Wow Dave's guitar shop looks unbelievable and worth the 3hr road trip!

  • @richardnoriega710

Epiphone's pelham blue has always been the same. I have a 2011 Dot in pelham blue and the finish is exactly the same as the DG335 model (I've compared the two side by side).
Now, this is not to say that their pelham blue is the same as the Gibson's pelham blue as I've never owned one nor ever seen one in person.
I own the metalic gold version of Gibson DG335 (got it before the prices went through the roof). While the lacquer is obviously different from the Epiphone version, I can honestly say that they both sound amazing equally. Definitely not worth the price difference in today's market.

Just stumbled onto this video after the Andertons one becaue I also felt like the color was weird and wanted to check a video that was not affiliated with a store.
I can absolutely agree with the disappointment but I have to wonder how much of it was the fact that it was just not a good replica.
If the headstock and of course the color was more on point would you have bought it?
I feel like the frets and the setup are easy to fix and at that point it's basically just the poly finish that's cheap on it.
Would love to hear your thoughts!

Great vid, thanks dude. Tech question: what value /brand pots and capacitors are in the gibson model? What did you use in your copy? Also, is there a comprehensive specsheet of the original, that would include neck dimensions profile etc? I'm trying to have one built too (because the off-shelf chinese ones are way off) and will do the finish work myself including the tuners electronics etc. I won't even have them drill holes because that's also bad on many copies.. Neat review! It was well written and pretty informative. I've seen a few reviews of the Epiphone version but they've all been kinda ubiquitously in favour of it. This vid let me know that it's okay, but it doesn't compare to the Gibson, which is fair. For where I'm at though, an at-home guitarist who the Gibson's potential would be wasted on, the Epiphone is the one I'm getting ...for now. Maybe I'll be ready for the Gibson when it's reissued in 2616

Great vid man! I've lusted after Daves Red Trini Lopez since the Times Like These video. Typically I don't get very interested in signature models personally, but I will admit that I have had somewhat of an unhealthy obsession with Josh Homme's super rare black 1980's Ovation Ultra GP.
That said, I am also a huge Foo fan! So much in fact that...um, my GF may or may not have sluthed Dave's legit mailing address through property records?
Not in a creepy way, but mainly as I'd been aspiring to hand write him a letter of condolences for Taylor, and to express how some of his song genuinely saved my life back when I was in the dark mortal clutches of addiction.
    Now since I've clearly overshared?
Please allow me to dial it back in a bit and stay on topic.
I previously owned an Ibanez Artcore AS73 semi-hollow, and for the coin? That guitar got me in the ballpark of an ES-335.
Although that Firebird 6 sided headstock on the DG is not only a visual stunner, it's also structurally more sound and practical IMO.
This comment is creeping into weirdly long territory, but do you have any recommendations on far east builders for a DG/Lopez?
Because a Red or Black stop one, or better yet...
A custom 1/2 Red 1/2 Black ala Tom Morello's custom Ibanez Artcore (Guerrilla Radio Video) would be Boss AF!
    A man can dream right?
    Love the channel man!
P.S. You really got Daves performance mannerisms nailed dude!
Where does your tribute outfit play?
I'm in the Central Triad area of North Carolina.

I got one of the Epis and I really like it... For me considering the price and what it offers is way more than just good... I understand you of course as a diehard FF fan you want the real deal and it's completely fine, those little nuances of the real Gibson can make a big difference if you are into all those small correct details and the feel of it of course... But for the rest of us who don't want or can to spend like 7-15K on the real Gibson the Epi is just an awesome choice. I didn't have any issues with it at all, it's just perfect for me... I only needed to do a proper setup on it and thats it. Please make sure to check out my demo on this guitar on my channel and give me your opinion... I'd really appreciate it!🙌😊

My Buddy and i both returned our Epiphones Dave Grohl. Eye-balling the neck, noticed the fretboard was very wavy/ like a roller coaster. one guitar was worse than the other but both showed it on the side of the tuners.

A reasonably priced Gibson Pelham Blue Trini Lopez at around $6500 still won’t scratch the itch? Well, at least your friend that owns both the Pelham Blue and Gold version knows who to call when and if he’s ready to part with them. BTW, you and I have the same obsession with Dave Grohl’s equipment. When I first saw DG play a Gibson Explorer in 1995, I had to have one. I found one shortly after for about $500. Next I saw Dave play the Gibson RD as a tribute to his friend Krist Novoselic. Again, I found one shortly after for about $575. I still have both of them to this day. The two guitars I’m still looking to get that DG played in 1995 would be the white Gibson Les Paul Custom and the white SG Les Paul Custom. Someday. Oh and I did end up just getting the Epiphone DG335. I see what you’re saying about the color but I love the look, the sound, and the playability, and I didn’t have to break the bank to get one. I really like what Epiphone is doing with their “inspired by Gibson” line and there weren’t TOO MANY corners cut on the DG335.

I'm old and don't care much about FF but I have one of these.
I got it around 2018 off of a Chinese website. It says 'Gibson.' And I switched out all the pots and pickups. Maybe I have spent $350 TOTAL with a case.
I play a Hyatt gig once a week and usually play my DG. Mostly because it is light, simple and looks good. Maybe twice someone notices and says something.
I figured I have saved myself a car payment.
And no one knows the difference.

With regards to the color: Fender does the same thing with Squier. The colors are often off from what you'd expect, partially I'd assume due to what's available to the factory manufacturing the guitar and partially as an incentive for the customer go with the more expensive, non-budget brand (to be fair, Fender is even pretty inconsistent with the finishes on the expensive stuff, so). I wouldn't be surprised at all if the lighter finish was done intentionally to make the Gibson more attractive vs the Epiphone. But, I know very little about Gibson and Epiphone and only came upon this video because I really liked Dave Grohl's (what I thought was green) guitar in Studio 666 and wanted to see if I would vibe at all with the Epiphone release. I don't like thick necks and I'd like it more green, so maybe not.

There's no excuse for Gibson/Epiphone to have problems matching the blue. It's their color-they're not trying to copy it.

Spot on. Awaiting my replacement as first had a cracked neck at the nut. Color doesn’t quite match especially compared to the Trini side by side.
At this point have thought about getting a Red Trini if Gibson doesn’t re-release again but will deal with Epiphone for now. What are your thoughts on your Trini with real DG335l?

    • @JEEJ_MUSIC
      @JEEJ_MUSIC  6 месяцев назад

Trini is a beautiful guitar, but I really love the feel of the neck and a few other details on the DG more. They just play more like a “rock” guitar than the Trini does.

Dude, no guitar is worth $10,000. I'm sitting here wondering where you perform because I'd like to see you and your band play, NOT your guitar. Nor Dave's guitar. Let the dentists and rock stars buy these, it won't change anything about them or their sound. Dave would still be Dave if he played a Schecter or a Fender.

Well back in the day Eskimo Callboy now know as "Electric Callboy" released a video for the song
: Muffin Purper Gurp and the Hello kitty Squier was in it and back then i thought it fits the bands personality but will it shred and djent? I found one recently bought it for 350€ with the soft case the stock humbucker had a nice edgy growl thing going on Wick i loved but since i play lead and only percusive rhytmn guitar i needed a humbucker that combined these two things i required for my playing style and i upgraded it with a dimarzio crunchlab and while i was at it new bone nut and locking tuners where placed as well .the bridge even tho cheap as hell withhold the Sands of time and was perfect for the lower tuning i use on al my seven and 6 string single humbucker this is a must have buy and work horse and an eyecatcher and eargasm during live performance. If you find one GET ONE !!!!

A reliable old rocker not entirely different to the Grohl DG-335 which growls like a colicky mule. If that beauty don't plant a silly smile on your face, then you just don't got it. How does the DG compare to your Trini Lopez?

    • @JEEJ_MUSIC
      @JEEJ_MUSIC  6 месяцев назад +2

The DG feels like it has a slightly thicker neck. The body shape is also slightly different from the ‘64 reissue style Trini Lopez model.
Aside from those things- the biggest difference is the tailpiece. Having that trapeze tailpiece on the TL creates a lot of string resonance behind the bridge when you play, and it’s a decreased break angle over the bridge, so the strings don’t feel as “tight”, if that makes any sense…
