I know how you feel with the "red light syndrome", but when you talked about saying when you watch your videos and say you're an idiot, not at all, we love you how you are! Don't ever change!
The guitar sounds great in this video Colin! I really appreciate the loops you do, they give a fabulous context to the guitars you review - particularly today with the Varitone settings. I find this more enjoyable and useful than many other channels where it is noodling with no song-type context. I dont have a problem with Epiphone guitars costing over a thousand quid in principle, it's just not often clear why some are and others not.
Really good value guitars for the money, Colin. Craig, the guitar player in my band, Leavin’ Trunk turned up at our gig on Sunday with a cherry one. It sounded REALLY good! Craig’s a big fan of the “posh” Epis with the Gibson pickups. He also has a Firebird, a a Les Paul and one of the Joe Bonamassa 335s and they all sound fabulous. The Lester and the ‘Bird are all over our new album, which is out at the end of the month. (Cheeky plug!) PS: that can un the bridge pickup cavity is definitely the Varitone network.
Mug has been purchased Col. TV subscriber here & huge fan of the channel. What I love about your channel is the authenticity & that includes your tangents! Just be yourself Col - it’s natural & regarding those that say ‘Get on with it’ - they can use the timestamps or they can do one & watch short form content. I love your channel because it’s long form and unscripted - we get all the info but we get an honest opinion and it’s really entertaining. My guess is it’s fans who appreciate that like me that are happy to support you through the channel too 😊 PS: A witch hat knob t-shirt would rock!
I suspect a lot of people who watch your RUclips channel can actually play guitar and probably play extremely well. Myself I am 68 and attempting to learn guitar. But I find your channel fantastic. Don't change the way you present it to much because I love the slightly nutty but informative way you work. You inject a bit of fun into it. Carry on the brilliance.
Hang in brother I'm 64 had heart problems and had to calm down on my activities and exercises so I myself am trying to learn to guitar again I used to play a little when I was young but so far all I've accomplished is buying over 30 guitars I still cannot play very much but I enjoy it and I'm hanging in there

Thanks for another great video and really useful honest opinions (as usual) that I feel cover really well what a lot of people think! I will always put on the kettle on a Friday evening and have a nice cup of tea in my guitaristas mug (which has now arrived!!) and just enjoy the best 45 minutes of the week! Again thank you for all of your hard work and effort you put in every week to make these videos!! Cheers! 🎸🤘
I haven’t commented on a RUclips video in many years but am enjoying your channel very much. Honest and down to earth, you just clearly love guitars. You’re all about playing for the enjoyment and love of the instrument which is why so many people find your videos relaxing and easy to watch. By the way…I always grab a beverage 😉☕️
DON'T change your presenting style , it's a great channel and the reason is how natural you are, the conversational unscripted style is great...keep up the good work 👍
I think you enjoyed that particular guitar 🎸 quite a lot. It is a very nice one. I bought a Gibson ES339 to get out of my Strat comfort zone. Still not sold on it but it has no faults. I like the smaller almost Les Paul size body. Nice humbuckers.too. Don’t apologize for selling merchandise. It’s a part of making the channel work for you. 👍☮️🌞🎸🎵⭐️
Your reviews are by far the best! Look forward to them every week! I've never played a 355. Always thought they looked too big and bulky. I'll have to give one a go now! Thanks Colin
I totally agree with you about the prices of some of these epiphone guitars. When you said a sip of tea from my knob mug I almost fell over laughing. I love this channel, by far the best RUclips channel out there. I love the videos. Cheers
That’s a lot of beautiful guitar for the money. I love that Varitone switch. That #6 setting was perfect for the Reggae upbeat sound. Just about the coolest Episode I’ve seen in a while. Also, your playing was top-notch!
27:06 - Happens to the best of them Col! Was messaging with a couple of cracking players yesterday who were trying to get some content out and both having ‘one of those days!’. You’re in good company. Lovely vid as ever. 👏🏻
I have the varitone circuit on my Epiphone Lucille. I spent ages trying to find a use for it and basically landed on the same chords and strumming pattern you used here ( 22:39 ) about a month ago. Love how you built on this to put down an amazing groove, I will retreat to my music room and weep while I wish I had 10% of your compositional skills. Love your channel mate, thank you
Just to let you know, Colin, that when you suggest we get a cup of tea and some nibbles, I indeed do! Coffee in my case, and some biccies. Your vids fall nicely on Fri evenings for me, and it's a pleasure to relax and and see what you have in store for us. The waffle is all part of it. Maybe don't be in too much of a rush to become overly slick :-)
Great score, Colin! I read that there are 30 MILLION guitars stored in Indonesian wharehouses. More guitars than players in the world! Allegedly. Should be a trend if any of that is true.
Cheers Colin, the highlight of my Friday afternoons! Really looking forward to finally seeing the Budget Tele( style! - for the Lawyers...) Shootout. Want one for a 5 string open G plaything - but don't tell the missus.
You guys in the uk would be very fortunate to grab one at this price point brand new. No such luck in the states. All the ones I found were 1,199 usd . Very good video thanks.
Colin! My God, man! The 'let's play something' chapter put some early morning groove in my coffee time today! Awesome display of guitar mastery! Some of the best I've heard from you! I own the Emily Wolfe Sheraton Stealth, but I'm lusting after this one now! Damn! Awesome review! Thanks, man. From one old (70) rocker to another, cheers! Greetings from the USA!
I have an ES339 with Bigsby and coil split humbuckers. It's neck and neck with my Gretsch of a similar size and configuration as being my favourite player. The Epi pickups are more powerful than the Gretsch. The ES is not significantly heavier than the Gretsch - they're almost interchangeable. In spite of already having too many guitars, (I'm a widower, so I can say that out loud), I just ordered one of the new Jack Antonoff Princess Gretsches. What a time to be a guitar lover!
Great vid col, I couldn't wait though, I bought the cherry red model two weeks ago when I saw the price drop, I'm not familiar with schinichi I was sold on the specs, I share your sentiment in that it's a bloody great guitar and worth every penny, I love mine.
I enjoy the way you describe and talk about guitars. Makes them sound more appealing and important. Gets me back into wanting to buy yet another one, ha!
The timing is insane haha, I just ordered the exact same guitar a couple days ago. Looking forward to receiving it soon. Thank you for the informative video!
Colin I enjoy your videos more every time I watch them! I have an extensive Epiphone collection and I love, not appreciate or like them, I love them. There is no guilt associated with the fact that I’m not a great guitarist and have 30 guitars, Epi’s and Squires and the like even though I’m a bassist. I and the people I play for and with actually like the Squires from Indonesia and the Epi Thunderbird on tape and live more than the expensive ones, that’s the honest to God truth. I do tend to take photos with the expensive ones haha and I know that’s stoopid, I’d like to be known as the guy that does more with less. I’m sure glad I have an all natural maple Sheriton II Pro, it’s my favorite. 2nd is a Warmoth kit Tele, 3rd an Epi IBG 335, 4th the new Crestwood Custom. 3&4 are obviously new and you’re responsible for a good amount of that!!! God Bless you friend, I’d love to have a coffee or a beer together or better yet a jam!!!
The object in the pickup cavity is the choke transformer of the varitone. The original stereo varitone had two of them, making the guitar even heavier. In addition to the transformer, there's a bunch of capacitors and resistors soldered directly to the switch. All of that together is the varitone.
Great review Colin ! I was wondering when this would appear. I'm one of those who got this at full whack the minute it landed because I had serious Gas when they first issued out in Japan but hadn't bit the bullet. I love it and don't feel hard done by. I also have a Sheraton pro II and a NG riviera plus that Polara you sold on the channel. The sound on this is fab but I do feel the Pro II is a little easier on my back
Having to give this vid a second watch Colin, just superb mate! Great playing, and wow that guitar!! There is nothing bad that I am getting from this guitar, its a try out must for me thats for sure! Cheers!
Gotta say, that thing has a very versatile amount of sound to it. I really like it. But I'll say again, one day I hope you'll compile all of your noodling in to a single many hour long video. I just love listening to you having a go.
Hey Col'! Thanks for keeping in the footage of you working your way through those tunes instead of editing it to perfection. And speaking of David Grohl - He and the other Foos guitarists put up a video talking about how they jam together as 3 guitarists in 1 band. Their playing was very REAL, which is to say that it was raw and imperfect. If one of the biggest rock bands in the world can keep it authentic, then so can we. 👍🤘
I got one, the red one, sounds better than my IBGC ES-355 that I got earlier this year on my setup, this may become my number 1 for a while. Wiring and pickups sound amazing, usually modify things but I am happy with it fully stock. Thanks again for the great review!
Loved the way you showed the versatility of the varitone, and gave us some insight into shinichi's bands. So many people poo poo the varitone in their reviews without even really giving it a crack. One of your best reviews Col but I could be bias as I really do want one! So pissed we get these in Australia! Thanks for the review and the GAS Col 🙂
I have the same guitar, I bought it new from Sweetwater at $1199 US when they were first released…mine is a 9.14 Lbs.! 🙀 It’s very well balanced though, so it’s not an issue thankfully. I have a very nice Gibson ES-335 Traditional and the Ubukata is really a different animal altogether, but I always feel inspired when I pick it up. It’s a great sounding and playing guitar w/ a lot of versatility. Obviously a looker too and I’m also a fan of the Kalamazoo headstock. I think you were feeling it playing this one, correct me if I’m wrong. Always dig your playing, I’m very much a feel player as well. Thanks for the review Colin ✌️
Your playing is definitely improving Colin . I went to the website and hovered the pointer over the buy button but didn’t pull the trigger! I have far too many guitars, it doesn’t help that I keep building them as well! Keep up the good work!
Great video Colin ! Lots of info and good guitar playing as well . I’m older than you and I’m just learning now , but I do have some gear ( cheaper mostly ) that I really like . I’m not saying it’s good , just that I like it . I may get some merch to help you keep going . Take care .
Great score and brilliant video Colin! After playing solid bodies for so long, it took a real Gibson ES-335 at a great discount from their Reverb shop for me to finally adapt to the semi hollow style/size guitar. I can't put it down. And I've had 'em all, from the old Japanese Yamaha and Ibanez clones, to Gretsch and Korean Epi Sheraton II. Now that I have, I could certainly do this beauty all day. What a great guitar! I have a recent Epi ES-335, but just didn't like the flat feeling neck and Laurel (try as I might). But with ebony board, a nice case and real Gibson Classics, it's a no brainer. They are my fave Gibson pickups. Awesome demo!
COLIN! Great stuff mate! That's a sweet axe. You are spot on about the prices. The only thing I can't make my mind up on is the f-hole shape. I kinda prefer the regular shape f-hole. All in all I like it. Thanks for sharing!
i snagged one, same as yours from GuitarGuitar after watching your review, your spot on great guitar for the knockdown price. Bit of a setup required, but i like to tweak guitars any how. I think the format of your videos is spot on, i love em so no need to change them.👍👍
A bit late to the party but another great one. I actually have been looking at epiphone's more after seeing at your videos and not geting so stuck with what's on the headstock. Keep up the great work
Loved the segment when you layered the 6 and 1 on the varitone Colin. With that control I reckon you could play all the guitar parts on 'London Calling without having to change guitars. Great review, m8!
Thanks Colin from Vancouver, BC I always save your reviews for last . After all the hoopla, your opinion and Shawn in Australia, and Jonathan’s in Japan is what makes me either buy or sit on my wallet.
Always enjoy your vids!! I found a super deep discount jewel myself earlier this year...a Guild Starfire VI or some such, a Korean made hollow body, single cutaway with Corinthian cut (the sharper pointed type) with Dynasonic pickups & a Guild-branded Bigsby.
I chopped in an unloved Fender Mex Strat and got one for under 400 quid. Pretty sure that’s what I paid for an Epi LP in 1994. The SU ES355 is by far the best Epi I’ve ever owned, and plays better than any of the genuine Made in USA Gibsons I’ve had and moved on. It’s not perfect, having its own event horizon because it weighs so much, but it sounds great, plays great and looks the part. Well done us! Love the channel Colin, thanks for the honest reviews and tasty playing.
I think you demonstrated the varitone switch perfectly with your jam where you overdubbed a couple of times and it sounded like three different types of guitars without changing guitar at all .
7:17 'Diamond shaped F holes' Nice look. Gloss Black, nice, glad it's not that aged 'gloss black' which is nothing more than a satin finish. Stark white bindings would be nice, but it still looks great. Bigsby just looks so cool. Great headstock.
Morning Colin, just back from me jollies and catching up. That is a handsome beast mate at a nice price, totally agree with epiphone price, in fact my ceiling is £500, bit of a tight get me Colin. Great vid mate.
You made me take an hour long detour playing my old 2013 ES-355 Epiphone (that limited run they did in TV Pelham Blue, Red, White and Black one year only). Those didn't have the Varitone switch though, but are otherwise very high quality and similarly highly spec'd (reminds me of this model very much you're playing here). Appreciate your content as always!!!
Great playing 👍 I have heard many that have tried the Gibson Lucille model complaining that the 5 knob selector doesn’t do much difference, I could clearly hear it here, and some of the settings sounds really interesting.
I never roll through your reviews. I honestly believe your words are important and your playing is entertaining. I find this program relaxing and honest. Thank you.

Just bought one of these.. best review on it I’ve seen.. it’s a thing of beauty at £799 it’s a steal.
COLIN! Great stuff mate! That's a sweet axe. You are spot on about the prices. The only thing I can't make my mind up on is the f-hole shape. I kinda prefer the regular shape f-hole. All in all I like it. Thanks for sharing!
Love your vids, you have sort of a Michael Caine/ Christopher Lloyd vibe going.
😁👍
Thank you for doing this, I always enjoy watching your videos!
i snagged one, same as yours from GuitarGuitar after watching your review, your spot on great guitar for the knockdown price. Bit of a setup required, but i like to tweak guitars any how. I think the format of your videos is spot on, i love em so no need to change them.👍👍
Friday isn't really Friday until you hear, "put the kettle on, grab yourself a cup a tea and some nibbles, and let's get stuck in." The best
A bit late to the party but another great one. I actually have been looking at epiphone's more after seeing at your videos and not geting so stuck with what's on the headstock. Keep up the great work
Great looking guitar, they're still selling for $1199 here in the states. ✌️🎸
Great video again, thanks Colin
It’s 6:30 in the AM and already a good day. Thanks Colin, good jam for my biscuits. Enjoy your day sir.
This thing sounds phenomenal!!! 🤘🏼 as always thanks for the great vids

'Diamond shaped F holes'
Nice look.
Gloss Black, nice, glad it's not
that aged 'gloss black' which is
nothing more than a satin finish.
Stark white bindings would be
nice, but it still looks great.
Bigsby just looks so cool.
Great headstock.
Best reviews on youtube and great playing ,Cool guitar I really think I need one ,Might try the olive green ,Thanks for sharing man!!
Appreciate your content as always!!!
looks beautiful, sounds great and i like the playing 👍🏻
Great playing 👍 I have heard many that have tried the Gibson Lucille model complaining that the 5 knob selector doesn’t do much difference, I could clearly hear it here, and some of the settings sounds really interesting.
