How To Hit Your Backhand Like Stan Wawrinka - Tennis Backhand

- How To Hit Your Backhand Like Stan Wawrinka - Tennis Backhand. The one-handed backhand in tennis is one of the hardest tennis shots to master, many club players really struggle with the single-handed backhand yet ATP pro and former French Open champion Stan Wawrinka makes it look so easy.
In this video lesson, tennis coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will analyse the Stan Wawrinka backhand and break down exactly what Wawrinka does with his one-handed stroke that makes it so good.
The first thing to mention is that Wawrinka uses an eastern backhand grip for his tennis backhand. This grip is the most effective one to use for a one-handed backhand as it allows you to deal with high balls, medium height balls and low balls. Certain grips will allow you to deal with one type of ball really well but then other types of balls become an issue.
Step One
The first step to the Wawrinka backhand is his early unit turn and coil with his upper body. This fast preparation creates time and ensures that Wawrinka is always ready to hit the ball out in front of his body, even if the ball bounces funny. By coiling his upper body, Wawrinka helps initiate the swing without having to move his arms independently.
Step Two
Lift the racket head above the grip. A lot of club players will prepare for their one-handed backhand with the grip and racket head level. This destroys their chances of creating leverage in the arm and racket but also limits the space they have to truly accelerate the racket head. Wawrinka lifts his racket head directly above the grip as soon as he starts the swing, this creates massive leverage (which later translates into force over the ball) and gives him plenty of space to speed up the racket during the swing without having to lift his arms too high.
Step Three
Reaching a good power position. Wawrinka reaches a perfect power position on his single-handed tennis backhand. There are three main things you want to focus on doing in the power position which are - your body turned side on to the net with your chin resting above your right shoulder (left shoulder for left-handers), your racket head above the grip and the non-hitting hand holding the throat of the racket. In this position, Wawrinka also loads up his body weight on the back leg whenever times permits him to do so, he'll then use a heel to toe action with his front foot and transfer his body weight during the contact zone.
Step Four
Racket lag and contact point. Wawrinka drops the racket down behind his left hip and releases the left hand off the throat of the racket just prior to the racket lag position. His racket head will now lag behind the grip of the racket and the butt-cap will lead the way towards the ball. Wawrinka makes contact out in front of his body and when he does, his knuckles are facing up towards the sky and his palm is facing the ground. Wawrinka will get behind the ball whenever he has the chance to do so which will give him the opportunity to transfer his body weight forwards during the stroke. Often at club level, players will reach for the ball and make contact on side of their body which destroys the power and stability of the shot.
Step Five
The follow-through and finish. Wawrinka has great extension through the contact zone and really stays with the ball much longer than most players. He allows the racket to travel towards the intended target and then finishes with his palm opening up towards the sky. Wawrinka's left-hand stays back, close to his left pocket which secures his body stays in a side-on position and blocks the shoulders from opening up too early. Wawrinka releases his hips and lets them uncoil when he has the time to do so resulting in massive power from the coil-uncoil cycle.

Stan Wawrinka has the best backhand in the world...I feel good using the left hand the way he does and I even preffer to make a step with the left leg...it's like walking through the ball plane.

Exceptional instruction, Simon. My one handed backhand has vastly improved through a combination of your instruction and changing to a heavier racquet (300g to 350g, strung weight). My backhand is now steady and predictable, more so than my forehand, with higher margins of forgiveness than ever before. The consistency is beyond my expectations and that of my hitting partners. There's plenty more room for improvement, but I'm stoked! A few takeaways that I think explain the improvement (besides the obvious benefit of higher weight):
1) left hand holding the racquet alleviates the strain on my right hand -- keeps it fresh for every swing. I don't mind the 350g at all and I'm a small framed guy.
2) left hand support gives a consistent starting point. a good start leads to a good ending
3) the closed stance seems paradoxical, but it works!
4) what seems like a limitation of reduced topspin (compared to FH) can actually be a strength. Because this BH swing is relatively flat, I have a wide ranged hitting zone. There is less of a penalty for poor timing. Balls hit early or late will still land close to where I envisioned they would go.
Turning what should be a weakness in the BH into a relative strength has a huge effect on my enjoyment of tennis. Thanks to you, Simon!
This is stellar. I also appreciate you turning while explaining the technique in order to show different angles of what you’re talking about.

I am not sure wether or not you had this covered, but something like: what to do when you get lobbed? I am quick enough to chase the ball, but always return the ball as a ultra high shot, which put me in a bad position in the point. OR I didnt manage to return the lob at all. I have tried the Roger Ferederer return between leggs, but have short leggs :)
Great video. I would say it is similar to Guga's backhand. The hip opining up and the weight transfer is more prolonged allowing the back foot to come around naturally for a faster recovery.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial thanks for asking! I'm struggling with the serve motion at the moment, I want to try and extend my toss and jump to generate more power but I seem to lose my timing and flow when I do that. I keep my timing and flow with a lower toss but I don't get enough height or jump. Can you do a video to fix that specific issue! ;) ha. Bringing the back foot around like a two handed is not a good idea yes when one becomes great and times it well the slight rotation is natural I always prefer teaching keeping the Blackfoot linear or stable and let the rotation happen without teaching as a natural proression

The most beautiful shot in tennis history
Great video Simon. I wanted to know your opinion on a technical thing. You said that stan has an eastern grip for his backhand, which is accurate, but he also ''chop his racquet'' meaning there is a space of about 3/16 to 1/4 left on the bottom of his racquet when his hand is in place. Ever noticed? Just this alone, create less leverage meaning the head of the racquet '' drops less'' if it makes sense, meaning harder to brush the ball, but more control compare to if you would hold it at the bottom completely.. I just wanted to know your opinion on this. thx again Simon.
Great explanation. I'll try it at my next practice.

Whatta Master u r Simon!!! Very instructive lesson for those who love one handed backhand. Is it true that one handed is faster than two handed backhand but it's more inaccurate? Thx brother in arms
I would say the one-hander has more freedom than the two-hander and if mastered it can help the player generate very loose power but overall I'd say most two-handers can generate more power.
Two-handed backhands also tend to have more control because of the top hand.

Hi Simon! How important is it for the racquet head tip to point straight up during the unit turn and backswing? On your forehand video we saw that some players like Fabio do not have the tip straight up. More like 45 degrees or so... Is there some leeway for this on the backhand as well?
Absolutely, experiment with it and see what suits your swing more. I’ve trained myself on the one hander with my left hand to have it like Stan but some days the timing is off so I’ll modify it slightly. A lot of it also has to do with the length of swing
Good luck with the improvements

can you make a how to lob chasedown video ? i'm often caught running after lobs especially if my partner can't cover my behind when i'm at the net. a between the legs instructional would be ok too, :)
Awesome video!! One key question - is the 'wind shield wiper' a forced movement, or a natural release?
When I broke my right wrist last year, I had to coach for 3 months left-handed, during that time I really had to develop my left-handed single backhand, I had to constantly remind myself to release the palm at the end.
Wasn't natural at all, I wanted to go through with the racket staying on the same side as the contact point.
I think once you learn it, it will become a "natural" release, but to get to that point takes a lot of practice.
Thank you for watching.
Are there any videos you'd like to see from us in the near future?

Simon
I think it will be natural only if you have done the everything prior correctly ie correct swing and hitting the ball.
Simon, lately I tend to get a weird sidespin when hitting my backhand and I really struggle to get topspin on the ball. Do you have an explanation for that and what kind of drills do you recommend to correct my swing? Thx in advance! Great video as always. Keep up the good work!
It sounds like you're cutting inside the ball. It all comes down to your strings at contact.
Try to focus on brushing upwards on the ball with your strings flat towards the target, you might even close the strings ever so slightly.
Work from the racket drop position or even better from just before the contact point and hit at 30-40% power inside the service boxes until you get the feel.
Check you grip time & again. Also follow the the ball longer with you shoulder of your hitting arm staying towards the net play a some rallies in the rails on one side to get a feel for it
Perhaps you're pulling across the ball, either from opening your shoulder or hips through contact or not swinging sufficiently low to high. As a drill in practice, you might try keeping the follow through on the contact side longer so you can more easily swing low-to-high and feel the brushing action.
A drill that helped me a lot was to stand in the ad corner and hit crosscourt backhands while my coach hand tossed the ball from the ad side doubles alley. Really helped me hit the outside of the ball rather than the inside and some nice net clearance.
Hi Simon!!! One question, wich type of backhand is harder with the low back, 2HB or 1HB? Greetings from Mexico.
I think both are easy when you know how to hit either one properly, it's all about the racket drop and brushing upwards using a low to high swing along with using your legs properly.
Thank you for watching.

Your lessons are great, I have learned a lot watching a practicing your advise daily. For a 170cm player, do I continue to develop my one-handed backhand, or should I use a two-handed for the stability advantage?
Which stroke do you prefer?
Have you tested out the two-hander?
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Yes, but the one-handed feels more natural at this point. Maybe because I've used it more? Thank you for your response!
thanks Simon for this video as usual. One thing you are not pointing out enough according to me is the whipping action of the arm and the matter you launch the arm with the hips initially. I can feel it on the forehand, the hips stop and then the arm is launched but with the backhand there is a difference between federer and Stan with the hips more open but in the both case they stop before the arm is launch.... how they stop please ? jeff from france
How do they stop the hips from opening up too early?
Top Tennis Training - Pro Tennis Lessons yes , I think they use the twist between the leg and’ the hips That stops them before the hit And release alter.
to be more accurate, it is easier for stan with his technic to stop the hips before hips than for Federer it seems. Maybe fed is more in translation and Stan more in rotation ?
What about dealing with mid to high balls with the one handed backhand, this is where my game is weak. I just end up slicing all of them.
Here you go Tyler - ruclips.net/video/sJ63cneHKTQ/видео.html
Nice video Simon. In regards to Wawrinka backhand what about his actual racket head size/string pattern/ and weight. Any tips or recommendations what’s an ideal racket specs for a backhand like Wawrinka? Example like heavier or lighter, bigger or smaller head size. Dense/open strings etc. cheers mate.
I think a slightly heavier racket would make it easier to copy his backhand stroke.
He doesn't hit with extreme topspin like a clay courter so the racket is travelling through the contact zone in a more linear path compared to a spinner.

Stan uses a Vcore 95D. 95 inch head, 16x20 pattern and 372 g.
nikejustdidit 372g really! that is really heavy. My heaviest rac is 356 on my duel g 97 stock and I already find that rac a lil bit too heavy for rac head speed. I’m amazed Wawrinka can swing a heavy rac so well with a smaller head size.
Top Tennis Training - Pro Tennis Lessons Hi Simon just an idea for your next video, pros and cons for top spin, pros and cons for flatter shots. Maybe us players would like to have both top spin and flat shots in our game and knowing when is the right time to hit a flat or top spin shot. Cheers 🍻
I think there is a little mistake, eastern backhand grip is with kunckle un the corner between bevels 1 and 2, the grip with knuckel on bevel 1 is semiwestern ( Thiem's backhand)
Never heard that one before, where did you get that info?
Eastern backhand grip has always been regarded as bevel 1
All predicated on a good balanced platform. Players should practice their balance

I have a beautiful wawrinka backhand almost like a ballet dancer except that it is nowhere close to the ball 😂. Sometimes, I line it up properly but my opponent spins the ball into me like a cricket leg spin and then I hit it back with zero power. Sometimes the ball bounces variably on a clay court and I don’t know what to do. Sometimes it’s so high, I have to add my other hand 😢. But I will keep trying and won’t cave in and slice or change to double handed.
One key point that is not mentioned is the role of the left foot. The left foot should turn to the left and this turn will cause the unit turn to occur unconsciously and automatically. If you just focus on the shoulder turn or the unit turn, you will be late.
I can turn my left foot and still be front on!
Is he really using the eastern grip? From the video it looks like his index finger knuckle is on the bevel-2 not bevel-1. So it looks more like the continental backhand grip. Am I wrong?
It’s a modified eastern, 100% not continental
I just tried out one handed for the first time today to see how it would go, and what do you know, you post this. I appreciate it so much I'll let you keep using the spy cameras you have on me
Thank you for watching.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I can't think of a shot you haven't covered already, but how about a video on how to tackle opponents with different physiques? I am 5' 4" and serves are probably never going to be my biggest weapon. I imagine 6' behemoths are also generally going to have some natural disadvantage that hobbits like us could exploit (increased start and stop time due to increased bulk? balls quite a bit lower than eye height?)
Thiem has a very straight arm through out almost all of his backhand. What do you have to say about that/
It seems to work for him, I prefer a more relaxed swing though, like Wawrinka's
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I getcha. Just goes to show how the mechanics of something can work in a different way. I want to take what you explain but I can only take it so seriously when there's a guy so highly ranked that does the complete opposite, but of course it's not just that simple.
Gotta find your own stroke but I think you lay out a lot of good ground work. Working on my ohbh...
Have a look at our one-handed backhand playlist here - ruclips.net/p/PLJP-Wou-v6z0KORN4JNFVPEii1mxYaymB
Problem with Wawrinka's backhand is it's difficult to execute especially for us amateurs. The opening of the hips creates to many moving parts that ultimately creates many errors. Federer's on the other hand is more technically sound and easier to adopt in my opinion.
You could always implement the swing he uses and forget about the hips for the time being.
Federer's backhand is good but I'd choose Stan's over Roger's any day of the week and twice on a Sunday. . .
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Federer 2017 BH was on a galactic level. Probably as good as Stan or even better, but the other years were not that great.
Great video! Loved it.
@@viveknamikaze761 lol even better...give me a break and stop fanboying...federer s backhand never was as good as wawrinka's, everything else was definetly better though.
@@vladraduandrei5227 2017 and forward was way better. Also backhand is not only about the drives but the overall versatility
Do one with Djokovic, please!!

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial thanks!!
wow, two weeks with no Top Tennis new video! Thought I'd see Simon and Alex on a beach in Spain, no racquets, no video machine and wot then for us loyal fans? Like a lot of RUclipsrs I too went through endless tennis online coached videos, nothing is as exact as Top Tennis. If you listen carefully there are golden nuggets that apply during practice or matches. Like unweighting the backswing, you can feel it IF you do it right just for a nanosecond. My 12yr tennis partner smacks me around, we play at dawn, it's my problem in the first set to get TTT's fine tips into play. He can bagel me, then I role play Simon's amazing swing pattern. End result can be me taking the next set 6-4, partner shaking his head, it's all I can do not trash talk a fake English accent "Simon Says!!!" Watch the videos where Simon and Alex pound on each other, those strokes are the result of endless hours of practice.
Thank you for watching John,
I was on holiday with my family and had planned on uploading lessons but the internet in our hotel was horrendous so couldn't get it done. Back now in sunny England ;-)
