    One thing I think Stan does to generate more power on the backhand is something a coach once taught me: Hold the racquet in your off hand and pull forward with your dominant hand while still holding the racquet back with the off hand. This "pre-loads" the racquet so when you let loose the off hand, the racquet springs forward from the tension in your muscle. You can't do this on a forehand or with a two-handed backhand.

    • @gordonipock9385
      @gordonipock9385 4 месяца назад

      Wawrinka's backhand is more high risk. He hits flatter and, yes, he can penetrate the court better at times and produce stunning winners, but his backhand is also prone to errors. In their matches Gasquet always tries to set up crosscourt backhand rallies with Stan because he knows Stan's backhand will cough up the error before he does. Gasquet can hit 20 backhands in a row. Stan struggles to hit five without an error. So Stan's backhand is a great passing shot, but not a good rally shot. Similar to Stephan Edberg.

Touch, power, topspin, slice, location all over the court, SABR, net play -- almost no chance we'll ever see a backhand like that again. That's my biggest regret about his retirement -- losing the chance to see his neo-backhand at its peak. If only he had switched to that size racket ten years earlier... Federer's backhand is better. He's BH return is better, his consistency is better, there's not much difference on Power and Spin from set position, I think Wawrinka's is bigger when set. Half volley BH Federer, etc. Fed just get stick for Nadal beating him in finals bashing his BH but he got to finals and he won a few Majors.
      Fed 23 - 3 Waw
      Djo 21 - 6 Waw
      Nad 19 - 3 Waw
      Wawrinka was not dominating with his BH. I can;t be bothers to do the Fed H2H but I guess it's better and can't be attributed to serve and FH alone.
      Note: the Return Of Serve is 1st or 2nd most important point and Wawrinka BH is compromised on return.

    • @72PMChambers
      @72PMChambers 7 месяцев назад

      @@GarlMemory Stans BH was the best when he was set and could use his strong torso. Federer was better every other time. Feder was better at half volleys be it SABR or on baseline being forces. Better on serve return. Better on run. Better since.
      Maradona's right foot is no where near as good as his left but it doesn't make it weak.
      You're comparing one of the greatest FH of all time against his BH and saying its not as good.
      Major weakness? 20 Majors? I can mention players with nearly as good FH with zero majors. So its his weakness but its not weak.
      Waw's BH is getting over rated based on setup power position. Go watch a Federer v Waw match as they will play BH to BH a lot then say his is better after his loss. There H-H 23-3. Nadal works both BH over and starts from neutral serve and check the H-H.
      Federers best OHBH there is. Edbegs was very conditional due to grip and lack of topspin, aimed to get him to net. Lendl broke down into slice far to often.

    He probably has been practicing that since he was 14. Some people start with a two and then switch over to a one. He probably started with a one, so in those formative years, he really got to dial it in.

    In terms of strength, wawrinka's backhand may be the strongest with one hand, but the strength of the backhand cannot be judged in terms of speed alone. There are other touches, such as the slice and voley, or shooting from difficult angles and positions. Therefore, I see that Federer's backhand is the one that combines all these features. We do not forget that when Federer wants to hit the backhand very quickly, he does that as well.
