One thing I think Stan does to generate more power on the backhand is something a coach once taught me: Hold the racquet in your off hand and pull forward with your dominant hand while still holding the racquet back with the off hand. This "pre-loads" the racquet so when you let loose the off hand, the racquet springs forward from the tension in your muscle. You can't do this on a forehand or with a two-handed backhand.

Yes, Stan's down the line backhand is the best of the best. But his backhand lacked versatility. Not many crosscourt winners. Not the most effective slice. Anyone who knows anything about tennis will agree that Stan's is the best one handed backhand in history. The shot at 6:35 is still the greatest shot I've ever seen.
I think Gasquet has the best backhand technically. The reason Wawrinka's backhand is such a weapon from the baseline is because of his trunk width/strength and torso rotation. In short, he's built like a truck and uses this powerful and heavy torso to rotate heavily into the shot.. more than anyone else. Federer and Dimitrov have more of a classic technique where they extend their left arm to stay sideways. Gasquet is a little bit somewhere in between however why I value his backhand the most is because his backhand is exactly a big reason why he had such a career WHILE being nothing special physically. He's not as athletic and nimble and physically gifted as Fed or Dimi and he's nowhere near as strong as Stan. So to have a backhand on that highest level while being like an average 'joe' compared to these guys means that your backhand has to be technical perfection because you have no other leverage. He also has nice variety on it, and I honestly think that if his forehand was as good as his backhand or better (like the other guys), and if he was as physically gifted and had the athletics or strength of the other guys he'd be a multiple grand slam champion for sure. That's how great his backhand is for that level and compared to the rest of his game.
Nice comment. Gasquet literally made number 7 and 3 grand slam final with his backhand alone. And not just the topspin backhand but the variety he had also. Overall the best one handed backhand
Most powerful I think for sure, but who else can do those little flick bh winners like Federer? I would still give it to Roger for versatility and effectiveness. Bonus: Gasquet is far and away the most aesthetically pleasing. Imo.
Most powerful is Thiem. Stan has great placement, but I don't know if it's physically possible to generate more power than Dominic. He is like a spring loaded whip that unloads on the ball
Wrarinka is legend admired even for the greatest and those who wins him. A cannyon man. The gestures of Big Four Andy Murray and Big One Djocovic overwhelmed honours him.
He didn’t start playing tennis until he was 14 either imagine how good he would’ve been had he started earlier. He wouldn’t have entered his prime so late and he’d have more than 3 slams
So how many Grand Slams did Wawrinka's backhand earn him?? Anyone can make a compilation of top pro backhands - Federer was among the best and achieved more titles than Wawrinka.
Djokovic 21 - 6 Wawrinka Pretty sure Djokovic had him worked out. Federer 23 -3 Wawrinka Federer didn't have issues with Wawrinka's backhand to backhand.

Nice comment. Gasquet literally made number 7 and 3 grand slam final with his backhand alone. And not just the topspin backhand but the variety he had also. Overall the best one handed backhand
Henri Leconte had a very nice backhand.
Agree 💯...
Federer was much more versatile
I agree with you as Roger was not as powerful as Stan but was more consistent.
Wrarinka is legend admired even for the greatest and those who wins him. A cannyon man. The gestures of Big Four Andy Murray and Big One Djocovic overwhelmed honours him.
Great backhand, especially down-the-line. Unfortunately, in modern tennis, two handers reign supreme and you need that to wins lots of Slams.
He didn’t start playing tennis until he was 14 either imagine how good he would’ve been had he started earlier. He wouldn’t have entered his prime so late and he’d have more than 3 slams
the key to his power is his extension through the ball & his leg drive.. Gasquet's is good but the spin kills the speed
Shame the consistency was not there. When he was on he was like Iron Man, but he never managed to get it consistently.
Why not include Stan vs Roger episodes?
He did
Even Stefan Edberg
8:27 the best BH Stan hit in his life.
Edberg
So how many Grand Slams did Wawrinka's backhand earn him??
Anyone can make a compilation of top pro backhands - Federer was among the best and achieved more titles than Wawrinka.
Djokovic’s only weakness: not figuring out how to play a guy that, for all intents and purposes, has 2 forehands.
Djokovic 21 - 6 Wawrinka
Pretty sure Djokovic had him worked out.
Federer 23 -3 Wawrinka
Federer didn't have issues with Wawrinka's backhand to backhand.
@@72PMChambers sorry if I upset you. 2-0 in slam finals against Djokovic and the only player to beat him in his prime at the Australian Open
2:24 !!!!!
Gaston "el gato" Gaudio señores
History is very long, and since you are not a student of tennis history (nor am I) you should probably change the title to "one of the best in the past 2 decades"
i wish i was born a swiss
Very good motion. And he digs his feet in. And coming in at the ball with a bit of racket head speed. Crushes the ball into submission
That he has a bit of extra muscle in his
Back really gives it bit of speed.
I call him Stan the stupid man 😅
wawrinka is my fav player, i try to emulate him on court as i have a single handed backhand with similar style
The answer in Gstaad 2005
I think peak Thiem is pretty close too. If Wawrinka backhand is cannon, Thiem would be sniper
