I did a presentation in college today and it was my real first successful presentation. I have had presentations in the past where I have had a panic attack prior to the presentation and my voice would shake. Just tell yourself that your going to do great and believe it. Also practice, practice, and practice. Knowing your material and what your going to say at all times will increase your confidence. When I went up my heart was pounding, I took a minute to calm myself then I started. Introduce yourself and try to make your presentation as funny as possible, when you get your classmates to laugh it is a lot easier. When you get going the anxiety goes away and it's super easy, it's just like having a conversation with your classmates! Hope I can help

In my opinion, I have the fear of speaking because sometimes people stare at me and I get nervous or I can't express correctly a word in English and I know I'm making a mistake. I am going to apply the first tip because imagining that I am doing well, that I can finish speaking correctly, helps me to relax and not worry about the people around me.

+SuperIgaa Oh yes. That's what happened to me when I had to teach a group of chemistry freshman students in grad school. In fact, not only was I quivering as if I was freezing, I was sweating as if I was in a sauna.
Now and somewhat contrary to the video above, I often advise my students to make direct eye contact ONE PERSON AT A TIME. We are comfortable when conversing with our friends. Our voice doesn't quiver nor do we have any problems in conversations. However, when we are speaking in front of a group of people, most of us are focused on and we present to the entire group. By making eye contact and conversing with rather than presenting to one individual, then another, and so on, we focus on only one person at a time.
Your voice may still quiver. That's perfectly acceptable and the more you speak, the less your voice will quiver. Remember also, those in your audience may feel and do worse than you :)

My body gets shaky so does my voice I lose my voice and I basically look at my feet with my back to the walk try to hideaway from the world I've worked hard to try to stop this. The majority of fear factors in public speaking is that you think the audience is an entity, as a whole. A monster that will judge you and you need to impress. However you are dine talking to a friend. To your mom. To your spouse. To your mirror in your room. Cut down the audience to what it actually is. Many one to one conversations where nobody cuts you off or judges you. Speak to a friend, not to the “audience”.

thanks for the tips! I like what you said about joy. These days we are inundated with speakers whether on you tube , webinars or lives classes. When someone's sense of"Why" and "Joy is is not intact in their speaking it sure can be hard to take in the message .... Another tip for releasing anxiety is pausing after the exhale, This will activate the parasympathetic nervous system to help your students get out of that fight or flight they may be in.. Wishing you the best at Harvard!

I'm the type of person that if I do it so many times over and over again, it will become natural and I won't be scared of it anymore. Tomorrow is the last day of school and I have to give an opening prayer, and I'm nervous but relieved at the same time, because I know it's one step closer to overcoming my fear. Sometimes I like to think that talking in front of an audience or small crowd is exactly the same as talking to a group of friends or just even one individual. I've been practicing my prayer all day today, and we actually practiced as a class too. When I had to recite my speech for the rehearsal, I did it better than I thought because it was totally unexpected and edited too, so some parts i had never seen before. But honestly, I want all stress and worry to go away because tomorrow is the last day of school, and nobody really cares if I mess up because they're itching to get out as much as I to finish my prayer. My get-through thoughts are, when you open your eyes again, it will be over and your future self will be happy with the results. I know this doesn't make any sense but I'm just ranting to become more positive.

These tips are helpful I think and yet approach 'public speaking' from the current context or received awareness of what is expected or assumptions of how to do something. It's a have do be world out there....and our behaviour is informed by it....like a shaking voice...etc....Just like these tips are doing they are asking you to have or aquire certain 'things' to do so that you can be a better speaker. My work begins with creating a new paradigm or context around speaking and asks the question who do you need to be and allow the beingness to inform your behaviour so that you can have yourself be recieved as the speaker you need to be...more of a be do have world. Uncertainty creates fear and the resultant behaviour is survival based which creates a challenge and also beliefs. A beleif is the meaning given to a meaningless event....fascianting subject and thanks for the video!

I am going to apply the second tip on relaxation techniques, because it would help me calm down in exhibition situations. I would also like to apply the "practice" technique, because it would prepare me to give my presentation, that way, I can express myself better and give a better presentation.

just had to do an introduction speech today in my Oral Communications class in college. I was so nervous walking up I couldnt even hear myself think, but once I started, it got easier as I went on. Even ended up with a few laughs. I think the biggest part about public speaking is just getting used to it.

I am really afraid of giving public speech because I am cross-eyed. I cant look people in the eyes because I am so afraid that they will notice my damaged eyes. I´m so ashamed and dont know what to do. I have to start teaching at university next week and I really dont know how I am going to survive this.

EFL_ In my opinion I have the fear of speaking in socail circles where I don't feel comfortable because muy personality is shy and also I have that level of uncertainty as to whether what I have said will be right or wrong and prefer to reserve my answer. I am going to apply the third category because in the video talk about the practice in a mirror for to lose the fear and adapt. Also I will use the visualization of what I will say later so as not to run out of ideas

EFL_ In my opinion what the video wants to tell us is that there are people who find it comfortable for an uncertainty of people to see it while talking or want to explain something and there are others who do not want to explain the video to us to relax and breathe to maintain calm for those who are afraid to speak in public.

It is not so simple if one has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder caused by parental cramming for the 11+ school selection exam. In particular terrifying cramming in maths at the age of eight where an incorrect answer would cause one's father to go berserk and throw armchairs around as easily as if they were tennis balls! It really boiled-down to a family feud with people who thought that they were all cock-of-the-walk just because they owned an Austin Seven (a British made cheap small car with a taxation rating of seven horsepower) In the end children were being used as weapons with my father taunting the car owner with "My kid is cleverer than your kid!" One day he did come home from work rather flushed and said "There, I've wiped the floor with him!" Whether he actually beat-up the car owner I'll never know but my father was extremely strong. The austerity years of the 1950s were not as rosy as some people think but I did pass the 11+ with flying colours after finishing the exam with half an hour to spare! The car-owners son failed miserably so I was given a ten shilling note (83 cents) as a reward! Unfortunately one cannot choose one's parents so one is stuck with what one is given. Take care!

But the advice that I would apply is the visualization of that and also the power to practice a lot to improve

Really, i find keeping myself positive is very effective. If you think about being scared, and doing something stupid you are scaring your self.
Your probably being a pessimist about presenting.
Just be positive. And really if you stay positive it gives you more strength. Its 0.07% of your life, nothing at all.

EFL In my opinion, I am afraid to speak in front of the public because I am afraid of making a mistake and that the people who are listening to me laugh, so it makes me feel bad and because I still do not master English well,...The advice that I would choose is practice because it seems to me a more effective way where I can practice with members of my family, also because I practice speaking and with that I become stronger so that I no longer have fear when speaking in public

Hi, Orrala. I can relate… I would love to hear more about your experiences relating to public speaking and/or any anxieties you may still currently face. I’m looking to interview individuals (purely for my own research) to help me build a new workshop I’m working on. It would mean the world to me if we could hop on a quick call and I could ask you a few questions. OR if you know of someone who fits this description, please tag them below/introduce me. Feel free to tag me here with a reply if you’re interested :) Super appreciate your shared insights in advance.
