  • I have just finished writing a book recounting my ridiculous journey to overcoming my fear of public speaking: : amzn.to/2GuGpm1 In it I talk about my journey, it's filled with stories of my public speaking woes, and why it took me 12 years to realize what I needed to do to overcome it. Most importantly, I talk about what I did in 3 months that led to me being comfortable and excited on stage in front of 15,000 people and If you're struggling with this detrimental fear, trying to figure out how to overcome it and want to know exactly what I suffered through and how I did it in 3 months.
Speech was given at Cal Poly Pomona's College of Business Administration commencement. The Speech starts at 02:32. Please be sure to share this video with anyone that could benefit from the message!

I had a presentation in college today and it was my first successful presentation. I have had panic attacks prior to other presentations and my voice would shake/I would tear up. Just tell yourself you're tired of being afraid ;that you're going to do great and believe it. Think about how good it's you're going to feel when you succeed. Practice the words you're going to say weeks in advance so you have them basically memorized. Knowing what you're talking about will increase your confidence . I was calm while others were doing their bit when my name was called my heart started beating super fast. I waited a minute before I started so I could calm down. Introduce yourself and try to incorporate a joke to start your presentation, when your classmates are laughing it basically makes your anxiety disappear. While underway the anxiety just leaves, it gets super easy! make eye contact and it's just like you're having a conversation with your classmates. Thinking about the material and not about being judged helps. Hope I could help👍

HerpDerpMapleSerp ' It's good to talk of this, an outlet like being on line, talking to people who write to you back may be a safe/objective place, because what I'd want to discover is it's origin, in the meantime, I found in my own experience. .It was so stressful, anxiety to the max, when I read aloud, not knowing I'd have too but thereafter, I was able to talk in class not being anxious anymore! So, I hope that's going to work for you. there is a Toast Masters, I checked into it, I went to one ,but you have to wait until you get to speak, how long? Seemed like months. But again, I attended the one time & forget now how long the wait is. Did you seek a socil worker? I'm wondering if GROUP DYNAMICS WOULD HELP YOU TOO or a group of people that meet up to do this speaking ,that have similar issue, fear ..good luck SABLE

I had to present for my English class and I broke down in tears at least two minutes in. I walked to the back of the class and told my teacher I could not continue, then everyone began clapping; their clapping made me feel even worse because I knew it was out of pity. I sat down and I continued to cry because my failure continuously replayed in my head; it was one of the worst days of my life thus far. There is a possibility that I am going to be valedictorian and I am terrified because I do not think I will be capable of giving a speech. This fear is imprisoning me and I just want to be set free.

Your not the only one, my first speech in public speaking that's about a person change you and that got to me and I began to cry. What made me cry was the speech I was giving was about my friend and I recently move, but I continued my speech with tears and sniffling when I was done everyone clapped. After that my second speech was a excess and having my final speech today. Don't worry, you'll get better, trust me I thought I wouldn't able to get through public speaking but I got it over with. All you need to do is practice taking deep breaths and calming yourself, facing your audience confidently. 😊

Kiki Burnside **I too was taken by surprise in an English college course called COMPOSITION I. I did not know the professor would have me read my short story aloud. I did not have to stand but had intense anxiety. I found that event made me overcome anxiety in the class; facing a large audience is possible now. 1st time showed me some buried issues. 2nd time was easy but it ought to been a red flag to seek talk counseling. .

Public speaking/presentations is very real. But I find that if you rehearse your speech or presentation long enough and you practically memorize everything, you don't get as nervous as reading over a speech for a few minutes. I remember I had to do a mere 2 minute presentation which I wrote and rehearsed for 10min and I was trembling over my words so much that most of what I was saying was undecipherable. But then I had a 20min lesson plan/proposal in had to do in front of roughly 40 people but this time I rehearsed it for almost an hour a day for 3 days before the presentation. Needless to say, I sounded very calm and composed since I knew exactly what I was going to say and how I was going to say it. TL;DR practise definitely makes perfect.

Because I held in my many events, it got me, came up all at once...so, you have a great life ahead, find a person you can talk too--I know its not fun facing things, but believe me, it's well worth it now, than to suffer for the rest of your life because you had avoided that.--SABLE

The more you run away from the fear, the stronger it will get. The solution is to face it, which will make you realize you're stronger than you think. This is well known among psychologists. I suggest listening to Dr. Jordan Peterson if you're interested in learning the psychology behind facing fears.

Just know that millions share your fear and that the fear we have is nothing more than a mental block. It's not warranted. Realize that virtually every time you present, you present to people who are equally terrified. I'm still afraid of public speaking, probably always will be. But I've learned to mask it and use the fear to my advantage and you will as well. Cheers friend.

Hi Roy, this Desiree (Ashley Mettille) Mom. Ashley just shared with me your Brilliant and heartfelt speak from your Graduation from Cal Poly. First let me Congratulate you on all your accomplishments, secondly as I listened to your speech it was difficult for me not to cry as your words and philosophy regarding life in the business world is identical to mine passed down from my parents. Ashley speaks so highly of you and I wish you all the very best, you're certainly an Inspiration!

Congratulations, Roy! Inspirational -- both your award and your speech. Your parents must be bursting with pride, as are those of us who knew you back at GHS. I have no doubt you will continue to inspire youth who feel they are "not quite good enough." You are young yet you already have a tremendous life story to tell. Adelante!

Well done Roy and congratulations on both the award and overcoming your fear of public speaking. Tremendous. I was drawn to what you have to say because of my work and focus which is just that; helping whose who are confined and resticted by fear to create for themselves a new relationship with thier natural self expression. What you have to say is very inspiring to hear and heart warming to take in. Thank you!

It makes me very happy to hear the video inspired you and helped you realize things aren't nearly as bad as they seem. You made a great observation, what you are able to achieve and opportunities and challenges you take on really comes down to what you open yourself to doing, so defeating that fear (whether it's public speaking or anything else) opens you up to achieving anything you set yourself to.
Best of luck to you, I know you will do great things.

Im in college and in order to transfer to a 4 year university a speech class is required. This spring is my last semester at college and the last one to take that class. Just thinking about the class makes me so anxious that sometimes I cant sleep and when I do I have nightmares. My fear is not only speaking in public but also having an accent. I wasent born here in Usa so english is my second language. Im afraid that when giving my speeches people wont understand me because of my accent. And what if I pronounce wrong some words? I dont want to take this class :(

Hi there, just a few thoughts. Try not to 'feed' your phobia. Every time you say to yourself "I am afraid of speaking" or, "I hate public speaking", etc. Anytime you do that, you reinforce it to yourself.
You are right: Your fear can be beaten. Try simply not empowering it in your subconscious, stop yourself from making affirmations about it.
Instead, affirm how great you are, and acknowledge your speaking skills.. Have fun with it, it's only yourself you're fighting, so don't be afraid., peace.

I know that feeling too well. Believe it or not, not long before this speech I'd literally have sweaty palms and a pit in my stomach at the thought of being called on to answer a question in class. The worst part was that I thought I'd always feel that way but thank goodness I finally figured out how to get rid of it and I've never felt better about speaking publicly. Shoot me a message if you want to talk more.

I feel you litle nervous, but you handle well; maybe is the key: go for it, even if you feel litle insecure. I feel terrific writing essays, wow I say this is the real me, but speaking I feel blocked. I compare speaking with diving, water is hard and can cause pain if you don't enter well in water. With speech could be similar, inmersion in your theme like inmersion in water without loosing control. Very inspiring, I feel terrify in public speaking but is necessary I do it as a part of my life project, in order to trascend, contribute to world.

    • @RoyRAR
      @RoyRAR  10 лет назад +3

You got that right Rafael. You'll always have some fear. Fear is a fantastic thing if you have it under your control.
As Dale Carnegie once said, "People who say they are as cool as a cucumber are as thick skinned as a cucumber and as inspiring as a cucumber.” Don't see fear as your enemy, rather, as a potential best friend. Once you work at controlling it, it'll serve as motivation as opposed to dread. Keep it up friend!

That was a good speech! you really stood out like a man killing for a trophy rising high and waiting for someone to take it! The speech was really golden (a lot more shiny than mines) and every word you spoken was very meaningful and speaking for success is a real skill to have. Success is a real goal nowadays and time as it is isn't how it looked before the Internet and video games were created and I think focusing too much on one thing can really break success over the other and you really can't do anything about it unless getting it taken care of so it gets balanced with it (and by that I'm referring to social networking and technology over businessing). That is something to focus on in life, especially for those who are struggling in school. I am going to be in highschool after the summer break so it will be a new chapter in life :/ the thing I will keep in mind is that homework will be a thing to expect so it will be a big kick in the ass throughout the school years and it all ends in 4 years! I am going to get my hands on the wheel and steer into the future because things will get crazy if I mess up shit :D

I found your speech to be endearing and encouraging: It was personal and appropriately humorous; it reflected the Roy Rosell I have come to know; and it echoed many things that are timeless truths that merit retelling.
A good speaker should always be a bit nervous: It is a sign that you give a damn about what you say and whom you are addressing. That tinge of nervousness also creates a sense of empathy among the audience for the speaker because they become vested in your success or failure.

In middle school and high school I was able to muster up constant daily panic for sometimes weeks after we were informed of required oral book reports coming up. It got worse and worse as P-Day approached (Panic Day). It was usually a humiliating experience with holes in the memories from sheer terror. Never finished high school and that personality quirk was one reason why I couldn't. Then I took up rock'n'roll and performed on stage for over 40 years. Go figure.

Lovely use of humour & so genuine and authentic. Both a fear of public speaking and a fear of spiders can be overcome by using SET (Simple Energy Techniques) a form of tapping.
