  • In a game filled with future NFL talent, the battle between the Tide and Gamecocks didn't disappoint. South Carolina QB Stephen Garcia went 17-20 for 201 yards and three touchdowns. Marcus Lattimore and Alshon Jefferey would be huge contributors to their victory as well. Top ranked Alabama fell to South Carolina 35-21.

      Lol, I watched that game USC knocked down UG a rank or two. As mediocre as South Carolina is, no one should complacently walk into William Bryce.

    • @tannertuner
      @tannertuner 2 года назад +2

      Yep. And I was an SC employee for 10 of those years. I’m a UGA alum. I performed for Vince Dooley’s retirement dinner. Up until Spurrier was hired, as a university staff member I could walk over to the ticket office and buy tickets to SC games THE WEEK OF THE GAME. After Spurrier was hired it wasn’t so easy.
      But it wasn’t just Mark Richt guys. And it wasn’t just Spurrier.
      Donnan brought the #3 Bulldogs with QC at quarterback into Williams Brice. South Carolina hadn’t won an SEC game the past 2 seasons and had only won 2 of their last 23 games. The Dawgs looked flat during warmups. The goalposts came down that day. I was there.
      Spurrier always had Georgia’s number no matter who was coach. Even if Georgia won, he could make it look ugly, with rare exception. He always hated UGA for upsetting his undefeated senior season at QB and he paid that back in spades.
      I’m firmly convinced Richt lost his fire when university president Adams overstepped the AD and forced him to fire Willie Martinez. UGA under Richt never really had a dominating defense after that. Often competent. But never dominant. I think that sent a message to CMR that he wasn’t really the coach. The university president was.
      Even Kirby Smart’s Dawgs let down their guard in Williams Brice and blew a game against a mediocre Gamecock team two years ago.

But alas, always came up just short of a NY6 game.

    Also a great story at the time: As the game was ending, the student section was yelling at the legion of police that were encircling the field to keep us out, saying "You can't stop us". Well, the game ends, and of course in jubilation, a few students jump over the hedges. The first student to get to the line of police gets absolutely blown up by a Bill Goldberg-esque spear from a hulking policeman in the endzone. Let me tell you, we didn't storm the field that day, but we cheered loud in the stands!

      Shanked punt on a rushed kick is more detrimental to the D than a free kick after a safety. Remember that they gave up a FG the next possession, so they netted 2 points over giving up a possible TD, given a possible shorter field. The worst decision would have been to try and throw the ball away. The safety wasn’t the worst choice, but it wasn’t the best. It’s a real shit situation to be in.
