Often in the churched world we forget to acknowledge that the life of Christ was suffering, and that the life of his followers is also marked by tragedy, pain, and sorrow. Songs like these seem "realer" to me, realer to the cry of the Christian soul, a cry often unvoiced and half-forgotten.

I love this rendition more than any other. The speed is just perfect - afterall, it's not purely a song about joy and positivity. Jesus's life wasn't all sunshine and rainbows.
This rendition actually brought tears to my eyes remembering Christmases past when my precious son was still here with me. I know that he is enjoying it and is the happiest he has ever been....I have to believe that. Thank you and may God bless you and yours this New Year.
It's so beautiful, a really moving version. To think of the sanctity of those three wise men who traveled hundreds of miles through long and perilous roads guiding themselves only by the wonderful star on high, to worship Baby Jesus, makes my heart feel thrilled and humbled.
I love this version ... having ALL the verses. I learned this in fourth grade and never since then have I heard the entire song. Hard to sing this without choking up in tears.
This is by far the best rendition of this song I've heard. Thank you! I hope everyone had a very blessed Epiphany, and many blessings in your days to come.
I'm not necessarily a religious person, but this is one of my favorite Christian hymns as I absolutely love the rhythm and melody of it. Deep, rich verses ending with powerful climaxes make for a truly harmonious listening experience. This is one of my favorite songs to sing around the holiday season. :)
In today's American society, There's some people who unfortunately don't know or understand the true meaning of Christmas. They think Christmas is about Christmas parties and Christmas shopping and getting together with families. But they can't forget about the true meaning of Christmas and that is the birthday of Jesus Christ. Our Lord and Savior.
There is so much joy emanating from this one song. Whether your atheist, Roman catholic or a witness, it doesn't seem to matter. I love it! Happy Holidays and enjoy your day!
This song is so beautiful. This version is supreme, and it took me back to my youngest years, when my family honored Christmas as a holy day. Thank you for posting it.

I have been looking for a proper cover of this song. So many women/children think they can do this song justice. It's meant to be sung by men! When done with the proper reverence it is my favorite Christmas hymn. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for posting this video. One of my favorites since childhood, when I sang the third king's part and left no dry eye in the sanctuary. This had more, and more evocative pictures than I've seen in such a video, before. Great job.
Thank you for posting this video. It is exceptionally appropriate at Christmas, including as it does both the joy and solemnity of His purpose in coming to Earth to live just long enough to teach and then die to prove His love for us. I believe that the Magi came from a long line of believers in Persia/Medea who carried on the teachings of Daniel, who was made the chief Priest-like figure shortly before Cyrus conquered that whole area, ~624BC, as I recall. That would explain a lot. God bless you
Thank you for the history of this Carol. It is one of the truly great carols to come out of the US, along with "O little town of Bethlehem" which the Brits always stuff up by singing to a jolly tune that makes it trite and lacking in mystery. Thankfully Ralph Vaughan Williams didn't set this to a different tune, as well.
In my country (Wales) male voice choirs typically sing in this slow mournful style so drenched in sorrow and melancholy. It's basically doom metal accapella, I love it.

You might enjoy reading TS Eliot's Journey of the Magi written from the POV of the Magi. It is apparent that Eliot had experience with less-traveled journeys, the horrific roads, the greedy innkeepers, the travelers' flickers of journey-regret. Imagine the length of the caravan, the dust boiling up from all those people and animals. These men were kings, kings traveled with their courts and servants and royal amenities. What a sight that must have been.
We Three Kings Of Orient Are . . . The Three Kings, Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar, guided by the Bethlehem Star, set out to pay homage to the new-born King. According to legend, they arrived on the Twelfth Night and "presented unto him gift". Melchior's gift was gold (representing Christ's Royalty)--Caspar's gift was frankincense (representing Christ's Divinity)--Balthazar's gift was myrrh (representing Christ's Suffering). It is interesting to find that in some countries gifts are exchanged on the twelfth night after Christmas because of this tradition. The Gospel story (Matt. 2, 1-12) makes no reference to the names, the number, or even the royalty of the magi. These delightfully engaging details have come down to us through legend and tradition. From popular legend we are further told that Melchior was a small man and was King of Nubia; Caspar was a medium-sized man and was King of Chaldea, while Balthazar was a tall black-skinned man and was King of Tarshish. The custom of dramatizing the story of the three Kings has been popular for centuries and is very common today. In these dramatizations the kings, as a rule, proceed to the manger from various parts of the church or hall, and one of the kings is generally black. This is to remind us that Christ is limited by neither national boundaries nor by race. It is interesting to know that the negro-king tradition is preserved at St. Peter's Rome, where at the epiphany festival one of the priest, who worship at the three altars, is a negro. We Three Kings of Orient Are is an american carol especially adapted for dramatizations. Rev. John Henry Hopkins, Jr. Rector if Christ's Church, Williamsport, composed both words and music in 1857. Rev. Hopkins was an Episcopalian rector who wrote several Christ carols. This carol is his best, and is included in The Oxford Book of Carols with the comment that it is "one of the most successful of modern composed carols'. Written by: John H. Hopkins, 1857 Composed by: John H. Hopkins, 1857 Merry Christ! Lynnae Larson

That is why we are called to make sacrifices, especially during lent - to remind us of the suffering Christ went through for us . . .
