"We Three Kings", also known as "We Three Kings of Orient Are" or "The Quest of the Magi", is a Christmas carol written by Reverend John Henry Hopkins, Jr., who wrote both the lyrics and the music as part of a Christmas pageant for the General Theological Seminary in New York City. It is suggested to have been written in 1857 but did not appear in print until his Carols, Hymns and Song in 1863. Hopkins composed the song in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where he was a pastor at Christ Episcopal Church (which still stands at the corner of Fourth and Mulberry Streets).

Often in the churched world we forget to acknowledge that the life of Christ was suffering, and that the life of his followers is also marked by tragedy, pain, and sorrow. Songs like these seem "realer" to me, realer to the cry of the Christian soul, a cry often unvoiced and half-forgotten.
That is why we are called to make sacrifices, especially during lent - to remind us of the suffering Christ went through for us . . .
@@creightonstarbuck2000 We'll have to disagree charitably on Lent. I find it to be more of a game and less of a sacrifice. "Oh, I give up white bread for Lent! And only for a little while!"
@@AslansMane88 , that's not what Lent is, though (although for many, it is).
@@justiniand6a788 only a real true Christian knows what lent is and its purpose. In my church, Eastern (Christian) Orthodox, we take lent extremely serious. As it should be taken. So much prayer, and fasting. Its what our souls truly need.
@@justiniand6a788 I 100% agree with you.
My mom 86 yrs old is sick w/ the flu. I'm creating a playlist for us to listen to tomorrow morning as she can't attend mass. Thank you for posting one of her faves!
I love this rendition more than any other. The speed is just perfect - afterall, it's not purely a song about joy and positivity. Jesus's life wasn't all sunshine and rainbows.
How beautiful, and refreshing to hear a dignified version of this Holy Carol.
Another beautiful Christmas hymn. I know it may not be popular but I favor it a lot. The true meaning of Christmas.
Do you ever have that moment where you get the chills (goosebumps) when something really happy or powerful / moving comes up in a movie or song? I just had that 😍😍😍
Candy Claws I have 2 videos of this hymn being sung at my church on here Search my RUclips name plus Emmanuel Catholic Church We Three Kings of Orient Are
Gasspppp imma watch it then !! :)
Aaa I found it
Candy Claws I knew you would find it, I hope you enjoy and share the video as well
👌 that's 👌
It's so beautiful, a really moving version. To think of the sanctity of those three wise men who traveled hundreds of miles through long and perilous roads guiding themselves only by the wonderful star on high, to worship Baby Jesus, makes my heart feel thrilled and humbled.
This rendition actually brought tears to my eyes remembering Christmases past when my precious son was still here with me. I know that he is enjoying it and is the happiest he has ever been....I have to believe that. Thank you and may God bless you and yours this New Year.

God’s with you. Peace and love 🌟
I'm sorry your son is it with you anymore but I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
I remember this hymm was playing on our way home from Christmas Eve at my aunt Mary's house in the country. It was dark, I looked up at the cold starry sky and saw the star of the East. I watched it all the way home..beautiful memory!
This is the perfect tempo. It needs to be slow, deep and dramatic. I literally have goosebumps.
Men’s voices joined together in praise is a glorious sound.
It is!
These are the levels We Three Kings should be sang. Deep voices! Shows authority.
Hi rachael 😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈
Yeah, every top rated one is sung by a woman, fucking heresy.
@@Reach1335 Totally agree. Their journey was long, dirty, thru hostile territory, and they had important people and precious cargo.
They had armed warriors with them. Can you imagine how long that caravan was?
Love the camel-paced cadence and the triangle for the camel bells.
This is a man's story.
And I'm a girl. It is fucking heresy.
The rendition by Clamavi de Profundis is similarly great.
Oh boy, and your post was 5 years ago. In just those 5 years, FEMINISM has worsened SO much! I'm a woman and I cannot STAND feminism! There are many women and little girls who sing this song and it is just wrong... heretics! Also, in Good King Wenceslas, the KING is obviously a man but (MY GOSH) his PAGE was a man too!! The latter story doesn't involve Jesus so it's not heresy but it's still bad.
Very moving, and delivers the the majesty of the moment. Turn up the volume and bask in the joy and wonder.
This is the best version.
I Agree
@@Cobrawolf same here
I love this version ... having ALL the verses. I learned this in fourth grade and never since then have I heard the entire song. Hard to sing this without choking up in tears.

One of the most gorgeous renditions I have ever heard!
This is one of the most hauntingly beautiful versions I've ever heard of this song.
As a Christian I was awestruck when listening and watching this. Beautiful. God's hand was with you the day you made this. Thank you.
This song is so beautiful. This version is supreme, and it took me back to my youngest years, when my family honored Christmas as a holy day. Thank you for posting it.
Long live the kings of kings
Beautiful. I was looking for something like this for my grandchildren. This is perfect. Thank you.
Kigsgrama I have 2 videos of this hymn being sung at my church, search my RUclips name plus Emmanuel Catholic Church We Three Kings of Orient Are
We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star
We three kings, we three kings
Born a king on Bethlehem's plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to reign
Oh, star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light
We three kings, we three kings
Myrrh is mine, it's bitter perfume
Breaths a life of gathering gloom
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding dying
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb
Oh, star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light
Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light
We three kings, we three kings
We three kings, we three kings
We three kings, we three kings
We three kings, we three kings
We three kings, we three kings
Best rendition I ever heard!
Best discovery of christmas 2021. Gave me goosebumps ❤️
There's nothing like following the true reason and spirit for this incredible time of year.🎯🐪🤴🤴🏾🤴🏼⭐ Stay safe everyone!
Fantastic version! Definitely my favorite. I love this song so much... I wish it wasn't forgotten so often!!
I'm not necessarily a religious person, but this is one of my favorite Christian hymns as I absolutely love the rhythm and melody of it. Deep, rich verses ending with powerful climaxes make for a truly harmonious listening experience.
This is one of my favorite songs to sing around the holiday season. :)
This is by far the best rendition of this song I've heard. Thank you! I hope everyone had a very blessed Epiphany, and many blessings in your days to come.
jrlomy2k absolutely

I have been looking for a proper cover of this song. So many women/children think they can do this song justice. It's meant to be sung by men! When done with the proper reverence it is my favorite Christmas hymn. Thanks for posting!
One of my favorite holiday songs, thank you. :)
Best version I've heard. Great "noble quest" music.
The most majestic of Holiday songs! Praise be to God for providing us redemption.
Thank you for loading this. So many renditions skip the myrrh stanza.
Beautiful. It moved one of my daughters to tears, it touched her so much. Thank you for this. :)
My pleasure
No it didn’t
This is a beautiful video !!! Thank you for posting it !!! God bless you !!!
It feels so sacred!!! Whoever sang this song : Your voice is majestic!!!! #christianFTW!!!!
If there was a CD of the 12 Sacred Hymns of Christmas, WE THERE KINGS must be included. Merry Christmas
The king of kings
This is wonderful! I love the measured pace of the rendition, and the mature men's voices is delicious!

What a beautiful, traditional version of this song!
Oh man, I didn't even realize there were tears in my eyes until the end.
It is so powerful! The text simply leaves you speechless, and this rendition just nails it.
Repent. Your mind is infested with filth and delusion. You are a man, be strong brother. Fight off your curse.
The perfect matching of the picture stills to the lyrics gave me chills! Love this!
I am not religious in any sense, I don't believe in a higher power but I love this song. Its just a peaceful melody. Can't all just get along and enjoy good music? Happy Holidays to all people no matter your religious affiliation!
There is so much joy emanating from this one song. Whether your atheist, Roman catholic or a witness, it doesn't seem to matter. I love it! Happy Holidays and enjoy your day!
Very beautiful and inspiring. Thanks for posting and God bless!
I'm going to be in a Nativity play as King Caspar and I have to sing this. I'm nervous yet excited! :)
Merry Christmas & a Blessed Epiphany to all!
Wow! Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

In today's American society,
There's some people who unfortunately don't know or understand the true meaning of Christmas. They think Christmas is about Christmas parties and Christmas shopping and getting together with families. But they can't forget about the true meaning of Christmas and that is the birthday of Jesus Christ. Our Lord and Savior.
Brothers...the glories of this world is great, but do not forget the eternal, everlasting glory of kingdom of the righteous king, Yahweh. Righteous God, in your grace, may these lost children return to you. Amin!!
So beautiful. Aleluya!
I'm an atheist and this is one of my favorite christmas songs. I love the pitch and tone, it's really easy to sing along to.
We Three Kings Of Orient Are . . . The Three Kings, Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar, guided by the Bethlehem Star, set out to pay homage to the new-born King. According to legend, they arrived on the Twelfth Night and "presented unto him gift". Melchior's gift was gold (representing Christ's Royalty)--Caspar's gift was frankincense (representing Christ's Divinity)--Balthazar's gift was myrrh (representing Christ's Suffering). It is interesting to find that in some countries gifts are exchanged on the twelfth night after Christmas because of this tradition.
The Gospel story (Matt. 2, 1-12) makes no reference to the names, the number, or even the royalty of the magi. These delightfully engaging details have come down to us through legend and tradition. From popular legend we are further told that Melchior was a small man and was King of Nubia; Caspar was a medium-sized man and was King of Chaldea, while Balthazar was a tall black-skinned man and was King of Tarshish.
The custom of dramatizing the story of the three Kings has been popular for centuries and is very common today. In these dramatizations the kings, as a rule, proceed to the manger from various parts of the church or hall, and one of the kings is generally black. This is to remind us that Christ is limited by neither national boundaries nor by race. It is interesting to know that the negro-king tradition is preserved at St. Peter's Rome, where at the epiphany festival one of the priest, who worship at the three altars, is a negro.
We Three Kings of Orient Are is an american carol especially adapted for dramatizations. Rev. John Henry Hopkins, Jr. Rector if Christ's Church, Williamsport, composed both words and music in 1857. Rev. Hopkins was an Episcopalian rector who wrote several Christ carols. This carol is his best, and is included in The Oxford Book of Carols with the comment that it is "one of the most successful of modern composed carols'.

Thank you!
... It must be said: Our Dear Lord, with your cooperation, created a modern day masterpiece. Our blessed Lord Jesus is smiling at you and also is Mary and Joseph.May the BEST of the New Year come to You and Yours.
Thanks for posting this video. One of my favorites since childhood, when I sang the third king's part and left no dry eye in the sanctuary. This had more, and more evocative pictures than I've seen in such a video, before. Great job.
star of wonder star of light, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading still proceeding guide us to the perfect light 🌟
Thank you for posting this video. It is exceptionally appropriate at Christmas, including as it does both the joy and solemnity of His purpose in coming to Earth to live just long enough to teach and then die to prove His love for us. I believe that the Magi came from a long line of believers in Persia/Medea who carried on the teachings of Daniel, who was made the chief Priest-like figure shortly before Cyrus conquered that whole area, ~624BC, as I recall. That would explain a lot. God bless you
Now we have the depth I was looking for.
I would contest that believing in Jesus and following him are two different things.
Excellent rendition man. Of all the version of this song on youtube I feel that this is the only one I can find that does it Justice.
You might enjoy reading TS Eliot's Journey of the Magi written from the POV of the Magi. It is apparent that Eliot had experience with less-traveled journeys, the horrific roads, the greedy innkeepers, the travelers' flickers of journey-regret.
Imagine the length of the caravan, the dust boiling up from all those people and animals. These men were kings, kings traveled with their courts and servants and royal amenities. What a sight that must have been.
One of my favorite ones next to Silent Night. Thank you. Makes Christmas away from home a little more bearable.
Whoa, that bass melody part at around 3:30...totally did not see that coming. Fantastic. :D
3:30
My best version ever! Beautiful!
OOOOH!! ABSOLUTLEY GORGEOUS!!!
SUNG SO VERY BEAUTIFULLY!!!
WOW!!!
THANKS FOR THE POSTING.
FROM(U.K.).
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has to be the best choir in america.
Thank you, God bless and keep you
Thank you for the history of this Carol. It is one of the truly great carols to come out of the US, along with "O little town of Bethlehem" which the Brits always stuff up by singing to a jolly tune that makes it trite and lacking in mystery. Thankfully Ralph Vaughan Williams didn't set this to a different tune, as well.
Play it at 1.5 speed and it's even better
i agree, and i think if there were more people that thought like that we could have peace in this world.
This song always scared me as a child
I love this song so much.
@Dedicednu I love the mood of it.
This tale of pointing star!!!!How low near the Earth was this famus star? A hundret feets? Two hundret? Mersy .....
All praise be unto the prophet Jesus Christ.
In my country (Wales) male voice choirs typically sing in this slow mournful style so drenched in sorrow and melancholy. It's basically doom metal accapella, I love it.
Gold for He shall be Crowned as King.
Frankincense for He shall be Worshiped as a God.
Myrrh for He shall be Buried as a Man.
Great!
This is sung by men of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir!
Wow!
beautiful
Merry Christmas all
Absolutely Wonderful!!!!!!!!!
The three kings are the 3 stars of Orion that point to the star of wonder...Sirius
So when I looked this song up on Spotify for the Morman tabernacle choir a different rendition of this song came up under there name. When I tried to us an audio finder to find the name and artist of this particular renditions each one I used was unable to identify it. This version is amazing and I would love to be able to add it on Spotify. If anyone was able to find it please let me know 🙏
It is sung in the cadence of a camel caravan. There must have been a thousand people in that caravan for three kings to travel in comfort.
The Magi, also referred to as the (Three) Wise Men, (Three) Kings, or Kings from the East, were, according to Christianity, a group of distinguished foreigners who visited Jesus after his birth, bearing gifts of Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh. They are regular figures in traditional accounts of the nativity celebrations of Christmas and are an important part of the Christian tradition. The Gospel of Matthew states that they came "from the east" to worship the Christ, "born King of the Jews."
I like the we three kings theme. I have always loved the song.
Beautifully Done .
King forever, ceasing never!
Used to sing this at school ^^
This is beautiful.
Please give me the lyrics of this version (I'm not english-speaking, so it's difficult to understand this powerful message). God bless)).
Its the FEAST OF WISE MEN, 6th day of January 2017.
Am I the only one how likes this song because it catchy not because of God and Jesus?(personally I'm an Agnostic)
