Well to be fair, as the video showed, Karpov walked off with a big frown on his face and not saying a word. The things he said later were to the camera when asked to comment, not to Carlsen.
He walked away with a very Pensive look, this is true. Probably mumbling to himself "Anatoly, you silly guy, you made a mistake at move xxx...." But, look at his face as he shakes Magnus hand. Fischer and Kasparov were both such assholes, somehow I think Karpov was downgraded in the eyes of the media because he was such a good sport and gentlemanly, and therefore less dramatic. Everyone has their peaks and valleys, and at his peak, Karpov could beat anyone and everyone. Look up the 1994 Linares tournament if you doubt. Playing a young Carlsen here, you are seeing a Karpov who has devoted much less time to chess than he had before 1995, and he is playing someone who he has never played before and who is an innovative genius, even though he is just 13. The former champion is pure class in defeat.
Kasparov and Fischer were both much better than Karpov- Kasparov won Karpov so many times it's ridiculous- Karpov tried to get the title back so many times yet failed.
Steven Battleheart lol that's not true. while kasparov did win his matches against karpov, all of the world championship matches had extremely close results. in five world championship matches between karpov and kasparov, there were 144 games and the overall score is kasparov: 73 karpov: 71
iqless Everyone can agree that Kasparov is far greater than Karpov- he's just a lot more interesting- though both Fischer and Kasparov may seem to be arseholes, they're the best at the chess board.
Steven Battleheart Lol no. At their peak, Karpov and Kasparov both dominated the chess world like no other. When they clashed against each other the results were ALWAYS as close as they can get, so it's definitely incorrect to say "everyone can agree that kasparov is far greater than karpov". There's a time when Kasparov was much better than Karpov but that's not until the 2000s when Karpov started retiring from chess since he was 50.
to be fair, the video on youtube doesn't show that Kasparov invited Magnus to his chambers and they spent a few hours tougher after the draw. the full film though does.
Maximum respect to Karpov, a gentleman with impeccable class and dignity, Kasparov could learn a lesson or 2 from him. By the way, nice play from kid dynamite.
Yet having played against both her Magnus decided to get lessons from Kasparov, not Karpov... And no, obviously I do not mean life lessons on class and dignity, but chess coaching instead, the things that matter...
@@endthisnonsense7202 you don't simply "decide to get lessons" from former world champions : ) it's not something they do on demand, because someone "decided" so. Karpov isn't and wasn't giving such lessons. and Kasparov didn't do it on request either - he came with this initiative himself, and Magnus accepted it (and then later on rejected Kasparov's tutolage). of course Kasparov was stronger than Karpov overall (not by a big margin), especially by the time Magnus was becoming an elite player (Karpov being older than Kasparov). this isn't the top priority for choosing a coach though. stronger player does not necessarily equal a better coach, and that's true not just in chess, but any discipline. besides, Carlsen's playing style is definitely more similar to Karpov than Kasparov.
0:23 Kasparov stole the title? Why didn't the authorities get it back? I thought he was a nice honest person. Didn't realise he stole the title. I thought he earned it.
I said that about all the greatest chess legends when i was a kid too... Thought i could beat them all... Never got a chance to prove it, they never came to my neck of the woods... FORTUNATELY FOR LITTLE ME!
I actually was 9 when I first played chess , and with practice of some month I beat the best chess player of my town , I actually used to play chess with seniors . I got into this profoundly causing my study to be ruined . So I stopped playing chess properly and practing was shut down . After 5 years at age 14 I competed in very high level chess competition of my district and end up being third. After that i haven't played any proper chess but youtube suddenly today from nowhere showed me this video , This has from nowhere motivated me to get into this thing again...
I played his dad on ICC around this time. I was a 2000 player, his dad beat me like 3 games in a row, so not a bad player. I was a little miffed though cause I thought his opening choice was very dull and I said this to him. He told me his son would laugh at both of us. I had no idea who he was at the time, but I saw his ICC profile said Norway. Then I asked if his son was Magnus Carlsen, and he said yes. I told him I really liked Magnus's style and thought he was great, and his dad liked hearing that. It was actually a very nice moment.
Its really nice to see Karpov so pleasantly suprised after playing against Magnus. Hes really happy about new blood in the sport and was really polite and humble about the loss, unlike Kasparov for example.
After watching this video my respect and admiration for both players has increased significantly. Magnus proves he is best.. but Karpov proves he is truly 'great' in all senses of the word.
Well, it's about WHEN he said it, Karpov is 12 years older than Kasparov, and back in 2004 he'd already retired from competitive play (mostly; it was gradual in his case). Meanwhile Kasparov was still active and rated #1 in the world. There was already like 130 or 140 rating points gap between Kasparov and Karpov.
this just shows how freaking good magnus is. karpov is one of three or four greatest of all time, lost very little ability with age, and magnus beat him at THIRTEEN
Remember throwing my Kasparov comp chess set around the room many a time because I lost, full credit to this little man having the talent to win at that level.
After watching a video showing the story about how much Magnus' father, family, and coach sacrificed so that he could be in this match and other championships, the scene when he looks at his family and they're smiling has a whole new meaning to me.
Karpov's reaction is funny, almost admirable in his curious consideration of Magnus's unusual, young genius. He seemed almost excited or impressed despite losing.
That's when Karpov decided that he will ruthlessly annihilate every children chess star he meets.

@@davidgutierrez3312 mhh kind of. Magnus has studied a LOT of chess, including memorising more than 10 thousands games. Out of the top 20 he is probably the chess player who has studied the most, he has an exceptional memory (memorised all the capitals and flags of the world at age 5) and of course he's a chess prodigy.
@@piergiorgio919 he didn't memorize them all at age 5. He memorized some at age 5
@@zakir2815 what? Memorising all of the capitals at age 5 is honestly very duable for someone with a naturally great memory
Generous comments by Anatoly Karpov about 13 year old Magnus Carlsen. It is a measure of Karpov's character that despite being defeated, he can still be generous in his praise.

@@NetConsole there's a meme where a 3 year old russian boy chess prodigy named Misha was on a talk show. The host admitted he couldn't play chess, but invited Anatoly Karpov onto the show. Dark Souls music played while he was walking on the stage.

АНАТУЛИ КАРПОВА!
The difference between Karpov and Kasparov
Kasparov would have been hitting his head fuming hot haha
where yo get dat pic ??
The difference is that Karpov has class and Kasparov is an angry asshole.
sa?
Apart from the fact that kasparov had a superior skill on chess than karparov, but i do appreciate how humble karparov is since i never saw an interview of him and always imagined him being arrogant just like kasparov (hope i wrote that correctly since im not american)
Just imagine how his parents felt watching their kid beat a former World Champion. What a great moment for the family.
"Beat a former World Champion and still no bitches? :("
- his dad probably.

+richter75 Said every jealous average-paid bum.

+Poyraz It's simply "Norway." How can you misspell that? You cannot be an adult to society anymore. We're sending you back to the 1st grade, where you belong.
Karpov's comment indicates a kind and humble man.
“He was decent”
-Magnus probably
Steven Battleheart lol that's not true. while kasparov did win his matches against karpov, all of the world championship matches had extremely close results.
in five world championship matches between karpov and kasparov, there were 144 games and the overall score is kasparov: 73 karpov: 71
iqless
Everyone can agree that Kasparov is far greater than Karpov- he's just a lot more interesting- though both Fischer and Kasparov may seem to be arseholes, they're the best at the chess board.
Steven Battleheart Lol no. At their peak, Karpov and Kasparov both dominated the chess world like no other. When they clashed against each other the results were ALWAYS as close as they can get, so it's definitely incorrect to say "everyone can agree that kasparov is far greater than karpov".
There's a time when Kasparov was much better than Karpov but that's not until the 2000s when Karpov started retiring from chess since he was 50.
iqless
Karpov's games are mostly boring to me- he played like a computer- none of the interesting things that Tal, Kasparov, or Fischer gave.
Bravo for Karpov. What a sportsmanlike reaction ! Such a blatant difference with Kasparov's reaction to the draw !
to be fair, the video on youtube doesn't show that Kasparov invited Magnus to his chambers and they spent a few hours tougher after the draw. the full film though does.
@ I think we had the same thought lmao.
@Jul W It's not that I know what you're thinking haha. Look up magnus and kasparov you'll find the video.
1:35 Love to hear humble words from such a legend!!
Maximum respect to Karpov, a gentleman with impeccable class and dignity, Kasparov could learn a lesson or 2 from him. By the way, nice play from kid dynamite.
Agree
We say un french Kasparov est megalomane et arrogant.Karpov par contre est humble
Yet having played against both her Magnus decided to get lessons from Kasparov, not Karpov... And no, obviously I do not mean life lessons on class and dignity, but chess coaching instead, the things that matter...
@@endthisnonsense7202 Why would Carlsen pull Karpov out of retirement to teach him 😪
@@endthisnonsense7202 you don't simply "decide to get lessons" from former world champions : )
it's not something they do on demand, because someone "decided" so.
Karpov was and always will be a gentleman, both in chessboard and in real life. Much respect.
Karpov has always struck me as maybe the most humble pro chess player ever. If I'm forgetting anyone, please let me know.
Boris Spassky also displayed this same kind of humility, especially in regard to Bobby Fischer, even after having his world title taken by him.
Compare to Kortschnoi... who hates loosing and spares no oppenent😱
Ding Liren

Tigran Petrosian.
0:23 Kasparov stole the title? Why didn't the authorities get it back? I thought he was a nice honest person. Didn't realise he stole the title. I thought he earned it.
lol
Karpov. All class.
This is when he decided not underestimate any Kids. We all remember Misha.
What a gentlemen
That's when Karpov realized he needs a younger opponent.
A 13 year old nonchalantly saying “I think I stand a chance against Karpov” is so frightening looking back at it
I said that about all the greatest chess legends when i was a kid too... Thought i could beat them all... Never got a chance to prove it, they never came to my neck of the woods...
FORTUNATELY FOR LITTLE ME!
Karpov giving magnus credit for his creativity on the board even tho he lost in an upset makes him a very honorable gentleman in my eyes.
Karpov is a humble man - well done.
Mark Peterson Anyone would be humble on TV.
+Rusty Shacklford Go look at the world champion match, he wasn't very humble himself.
Agreed. He's very humble.
Is that Magnus' father at 1:28 ? What a sincere change of expression there. Pure, unfiltered pride and joy in his son
Losing to a kid with such grace is amazing to see. Respect to Karpov
he doesn't look 13 , he looks like a 10 year old kid

Amazing how well he took the loss. Not embarrassed just respectful.
Yeah, too bad Magnus can't do the same.
What an amazing moment at 1:20 it must have been for his parents and family. That thumb up he gave "Ive beat this former champ" wow.
i hope my parents will never see this comment
1:29 Magnus' father, mother, and sister. The resemblance is uncanny.
At 13 I found out "Grilled Cheese" Sandwiches weren't called "Girl Cheese" Sandwiches and it was in fact ok for me to eat them as a Boy.
Nothing to see here, just 13yo Magnus carlsen beats dark souls boss
😂
Its so good to know that these guys made a game based on the boss of chess
So... No Dark Souls Boss song this time?
I played his dad on ICC around this time. I was a 2000 player, his dad beat me like 3 games in a row, so not a bad player. I was a little miffed though cause I thought his opening choice was very dull and I said this to him. He told me his son would laugh at both of us. I had no idea who he was at the time, but I saw his ICC profile said Norway.
Then I asked if his son was Magnus Carlsen, and he said yes. I told him I really liked Magnus's style and thought he was great, and his dad liked hearing that. It was actually a very nice moment.
This is why people loved Karpov.
Did u see him playing Misha 3 Years old. Karpov is différent from all players i ve seen he is son kind.
And MUCH RESPECT for Mr. Karpov, always 😊
Karpov: You cant defeat me
Misha: i know but he can
Magnus Carlsenaaaaa
When he lost to a 13 year old magnus carlsen that was the moment he knew he will destroy every young chess star he sees.
8 years later, Karpov came to get his vengeance from a kid 4 times younger than Magnus.
But did he beat xqc in only 6 moves?
HAHAHA
Gold
Trust me, it's only because he didn't whip out the Wooden Shield
Ayy
I like how small and soft Magnus voice is as a kid, but now his voice is deep and full
"Very productive" wow what a great compliment. He was saying that this was no booked up player.
Its really nice to see Karpov so pleasantly suprised after playing against Magnus. Hes really happy about new blood in the sport and was really polite and humble about the loss, unlike Kasparov for example.
He was actually excited to meet such a formidable opponent. I think that is very respectable, it shows his love for the game.
After watching this video my respect and admiration for both players has increased significantly. Magnus proves he is best.. but Karpov proves he is truly 'great' in all senses of the word.
Kasparov loves winning. Karpov loves chess.
which is why kimovich wins and karpov... keeps loving
Bro beat a former world champion and then just went like 👍
You know you’re watching a genius when classical music plays in the background
When I was 13 I ate wool and it clogged up my stomach and almost died.
Only Magnus can say -
"It would be difficult to play Kasparov, but I stand a chance against Karpov"
His dad told him to say that
Well, it's about WHEN he said it,
Karpov is 12 years older than Kasparov, and back in 2004 he'd already retired from competitive play (mostly; it was gradual in his case).
Meanwhile Kasparov was still active and rated #1 in the world.
There was already like 130 or 140 rating points gap between Kasparov and Karpov.
The fact he’s chilling in the pool prior to the match is just amazing 😹
this just shows how freaking good magnus is. karpov is one of three or four greatest of all time, lost very little ability with age, and magnus beat him at THIRTEEN
Every interview, every talk, every single time. Karpov a GENTLEMEN
Karpov is very intelligent person. Respect.
Karpov: so you came here to die with Misha?
this kid: No, I came here to stop you
This kid is actually the current world champion right now lol.
This man took the loss like a gentleman. Gratz for Karpov.
That violin piece is the standard, "smart things are about to happen" music.
Remember throwing my Kasparov comp chess set around the room many a time because I lost, full credit to this little man having the talent to win at that level.
Karpov never showed mercy to children again.
"14th World Champion"
"International Blitz Master"
"Merited of Norwegian chess Grandmaster"
"MAGNUS CARLSEN!!!"
Karpov : "Mummy!?"
It’s crazy to see how Carlsen’s body language has not changed while playing
Karpov: "why do i hear boss music?"
1:48 he probably meant creative player
with his smile, its like he was happy to see the rise of such formidable young talent

What a beautiful reaction from a former world champion to being beaten by a child. Class act.
After watching a video showing the story about how much Magnus' father, family, and coach sacrificed so that he could be in this match and other championships, the scene when he looks at his family and they're smiling has a whole new meaning to me.
it's always a defeat when you fight against someone way younger.
If you win, "pfft he beat a kid"
And if you lose, well you gotta suck it up
So impressed with Karpov`s sportsmanship here; a true gentleman and a chess legend who will never be forgotten.
Karpov : I am undefeatable
Misha osipov : I know ...but he can

“He produces ideas”
The best compliment you can get.
There is a stark ego differences between karpov and kasparov. And humility is beautiful!
Karpov's reaction is funny, almost admirable in his curious consideration of Magnus's unusual, young genius. He seemed almost excited or impressed despite losing.
Karpov and Spassky - both Players of tremendous class.
+Ryan Ortega And Spassky was a scary monster too. Did not ever want to take that guy lightly, on the board.
