Where do they find some of these people? They’re so awkward. 🤦🏼♀️ I bet all the GMs’ heads hurt when they’re asked such dumb questions. Edit: Cackling over Hikaru’s facial expressions is the best, though. 😂
The game is from Gibraltar Chess 2019 and is Levon Aronian with the white pieces against David Howell. From what information I can gather, Howell played 7…f6 in a line of the Exchange Variation of the Caro Kann Defense, which was a relatively new move if not an outright novelty at the time. Neither player was playing for a draw, and Levon entered into a line in which he voluntarily gave up his bishop on e3 for piece activity. However, Levon miscalculated pretty badly, and what resulted is the position you see in the video after Howell’s 18…Nxb4. The position is completely lost for white, and Howell would go on to win the game in what was considered a pretty significant upset.
The player in the foreground, Levon Aronian, played a poor move. The player in the background making the facial expressions, Hikaru Nakamura, sees this and is perplexed because Aronian is a very strong player and Nakamura did not expect him to make a poor move like that.
Fabiano needed to win that tournament to qualify for the Candidates, which ultimately leads to the World Championship. So that was a little bit of banter there, with Magnus pointing out the obvious fact
Hikaru's expressions are comedy gold 😆😆
