I probably would have subbed out Ancient Magus Bride for something else at first glance, but I do think its inclusion brings up an interesting point. Even without the accents, I think its still a good dub, and I thought the casting was pretty spot-on (relative newbies, lead actors that typically don't get lead roles, etc...). I think the choice of accents is simply up to the director's discretion on how comfortable they are with them (and maybe Kyle Phillips wasn't, compared to someone like say, Caitlin Glass)? I actually forgot the whole "Chise singing in Japanese" thing wasn't a stylistic choice instead of a mandate. I thought it was kind of cool and made complete sense that her lullaby from childhood she sings to Elias would be something in her first language (Japanese), and not English. I do wonder how the dub would sound if given to a director who *would* use accents, but I'd rather have no accents than terrible ones. And considering 90% of the cast would have some type of accent/regional speech pattern, that could have easily happened. That being said, a UK dub (or at least a studio that hires UK actors more often) would have been really cool as well, and I hope that's something we see outside of niche stuff like the Emma kickstarter. As far as dubs I would like to see re-done... maybe Perfect Blue? Even the acting + casting choices aside (not all of it is bad, maybe a bit dated), the sound quality is downright awful. I also wish the Trust & Betrayal OVA had a better dub, but I dunno about anyone touching that property right now. Its tough. I find it much easier to think of shows/movies that need a dub period.
I thought the accents in Princess Principal where for the most part good. There maybe some better ones, but they have the advantage of having some British Expats.
I actually got Steven Foster to watch my Pani Poni Dash video and he liked it (save for the audio quality, but that's expected XD), and in a bit of a interesting note, he considered removing Himeko's iconic verbal tics. Yeah. But luckily, Brittney Karbowski's performance was good enough to convince him to keeping said tics. A Pani Poni Dash with no "Maho~!". Imagine an alternate universe if that happened.
The Maho's were Brittany Karbowski's favorite parts. I remember getting one of the PPD DVDs signed by her back around 2013 or so, and she said Himeko was easily one of her favorite characters to act just because of the Maho's.
I feel like I'm being heard. I spoke about the UK getting more anime roles is needed. There's more than just American accents, and it just doesn't feel the same for me. When the UK is allowed to dub anime, they do a great job. Just look at all the Ghibli dubs. See Arrietty in the UK and its way better than the American one.
I'm american, but I feel like that in general, european dubs are more respectful to the original work. Since America is the center of the world apparently, american dubs tend to americanize concepts more often.
Here's a hot take for you all, with the exception of Sabat as Piccolo, I actually prefer the Canadian cast to the Funimation cast for the characters that were introduced at the time. We can keep Laura Bailey as Trunks, because Laura Bailey. **Harp music, sparkles**
Here’s the thing with the British accent, it was never a thing until the 1800’s during Queen Victoria’s reign. So if your setting is in the Industrial Age Britain like In “Moriarty the Patriot” then it’s understandable. But before that time pre-industriation, having none British accents can technically be accurate to the story it takes place in.
12:22 There was also Samurai Pizza Cats which apparently Saban didn't have the script for or something but I really do NOT trust the source of that info and it doesn't really make much sense in my eyes to begin with, it was Saban's job to translate it in the first place, why would they need the script for that when they could do it by ear?
I feel dragon ball z dub in latin american is soo good, the voices are so iconic and for example: the voice of goku is more mature, for the serious moments. vegeta's voice created a joke amongst the series to say "maldito insecto" (damn insect) as a pretty iconic line, tho I guess it would be hard to analyze since its in spanish
One of my favorite lines from Dragon Ball Z's Latin American Spanish dub is from the Cell Saga when Vegeta complains about cell copying his lines. I think Vegeta said something like "Maldito, no solo copió mis células, sino también mis diálogos" (Curse him, not only he copied my cells, but also my phrases)
22:29 In PSO2 some of the idol NPC, Quna's songs are accurate to the Japanese version which leads to awkward note holds in place of awkward pauses even though the lip sync was never a priority being that it's a video game, let alone one with a budget localization. (and that budget localization is a _massive_ disservice to one of the biggest online games in Japan alongside FFXIV and Dragon Quest X and the worst part is that there apparently was still crunch involved if an out of context tweet from one of the people who worked on the localization is any indicator, which for a localization that was eight years late is definitely something that goes beyond how bad Cyberpunk 2077's crunch was and is closer to Duke Nukem Forever)
Personally, I think Anime series that never finished their Dubs (Ex: Super GALS, Familiar of Zero, Megaman Starforce, etc.) should get re-dubbed. If just for Non-Japanese speakers such as myself.
Thank you for mentioning the Canadian Dragon Ball Z cast! I would love to hear more of Scott McNeil and Brian Drummond in the movies, or any other Dragon Ball material for that matter. Also, for clarification: The first three Z movies were actually Pioneer's doing. Those three dubs (which were actually all uncut) had very little to do with Saban, even Funimation were more hands-off with them as they were fully produced by Pioneer, hence the more faithful approach to music and script. The original TV version of Tree of Might on the other hand (with censorship, Saban music and Ian Corlett as Goku) was a different version altogether and was more of a Funimation/Saban production like the series, although Saban's role was mostly facilitating airtime and providing musical scores. Long story short; The TV Ocean dub of Tree of Might is completely separate from the uncut Pioneer Ocean dub despite both having the Canadian cast. The uncut Ocean versions only exist on the old Pioneer DVD sets, even Funimation didn't re-release them on their Rock the Dragon collectors set.
i know its "not accurate" but I think the DBZ Super 13 movie is better dubbed, purely because the sub is just so boring. the dub gave 13 a personality, stereotypical it may be. but better than the sub did, which was nothing.
Dragon Ball Z Kai and Super needs a Ocean Dub! and When it comes to that certain arc during the filler of Super... Chris Sabat needs to voice a certain purple Vegeta.
Actually, an Ocean dub of Kai does exist! And... It’s currently in limbo as to whether it will actually release or not. That doesn’t mean it’s not complete. Au contraire! Although it doesn’t cover the Boo arc (since the dub started production in 2010, before The Final Chapters were even a thing), the original Kai has been dubbed by Ocean Productions in Canada, fully completed since between 2012 & 2014, and now it’s just a matter of trying to get a Canadian channel to actually air the damn thing.
@@Azelf89 I don't count it tell I can actually watch it somewhere. So if it ever does, then I'll care. Though, I'm not sure if the UK region broadcast rights for DBZKai and Super were ever got by a company? Without going into too much political stuff, given the UK is leaving the EU region, meaning that for the first time ROI and British tv broadcast regions are going to be separated. At least Peitro having a French accent makes sense given his name, changing "mai furendo" to "mon ami")
I’ve got to say on the topic of accents, it seems odd but in the context of being a dub makes a lot of sense to generally use accents that give off the vibe that the original language production does.

Honestly I'd love to see a Hajime No Ippo re dub and a dub of the newer seasons, but I'd love them to keep the same actors. The og dub had a hanging with the boys vibe.
The only problem I see with a real Ghost Stories dub is that the joke one is considered to be so good for what it is that I just don't see there being much demand for it.
I commented on this in the last video, but Karin (Chibi Vampire) was dubbed in Hong Kong. I actually enjoyed that series and didn't find too much actually bad about the voices, but there were a few instances where the Chinese accents were slipping through. Mostly with Elda Maaka, Karin's grandmother. Karin herself was actually dubbed by an at-the-time 17 year old American actress, so the 15 year old Karin Marker had an appropriate voice. Karin's dad reminded me of James from Pokemon, and Winner was... odd. If you're familiar with this series, I'd like to hear your thoughts.
Ngl, I disagree with the idea of redubbibg the dbz movies for the most part. What would be nice is to include a sh*t ton of as many language tracks as is available including the speedy and oceans dub for the earlier movies both for the lols and for performances. But yo that lord slug needle drop when Goku went false ssj for the dub is the best thing. Period (On God!)
There is a difference between regional dialects and foreign accents. I actually do NOT want Italian and French Accents in English Dubs of shows set in those countries because what foreign communicates is people NOT speaking their native language. The only time there has ever been a Japanese Accent in an Anime Dub was Princess Principal where it was communicating exactly what it as meant to. Before Princess Principal and Azure Lane I was very iffy on the concept of Dub actors trying British Accents, but those shows proves they can do it. I don't mind BAD German Accents when they're Nazis, Nazis should sound stupid. Oh so Rebecca's too old to play RIka but your fine with for Kid Goku bringing back the same person who voiced for an unreleased 80s Dub?
No need to worry, admittedly I wrote that bit about Rebecca w/o having seen all of the show so I didn’t understand that the character inevitably need an adult voice too. Rika’s a tricky character to voice and I guess seeing the dub actress’s age compared to the seiyuu coloured my impression of her performance. We’ll be more thorough in talking about the dub VAs for Higurashi once we do a full video on it >.< Interesting point about European accents too! When I wrote the bit about Arte I just kind of assumed an English dub might try Italian accents...even though a lot of English-language films set in various parts of Europe don’t use the accents either.
Or they could do like what is done with real actors and just get people with said accents. Dubs can be good if 1:you have the proper talent chosen and 2: you have competent writers.
Would it be possible for you to talk about Teen Trunks Dub in the History of Trunks Special, and what you think about the new recasting of Alexis Tipton who usually voiced Kid Trunks in the Super dub, now voicing Teen Trunks in the History of Trunks scenes in the game instead of the original dub being Eric Vale both in the special and the super flashback. Which I can understand since techincally it makes sense, since it is "teen" trunks but from my understanding he is supposed to be like 18 in the special, but I would like to hear your guys thoughts on how it impacts the scene and its profoundness, as well as poking at the never ending Dragon Ball discussions lmao.
The DBZ specials (Bardock & Trunks) really need the redub, they're easily the worst dubbed and haven't been revisited like the DBZ Uncut dub & Kai dub. I'd love the movies to get the redub but I doubt itd happen, and luckily only the worst Z movies have the worst dubs. Don't redub GT unless you can get Stephanie Nadolny, she's a perfect kid goku
Forget the DBZ movies, the original DB TV series needs a redub much more to match up with Kai. Though a redub of Cooler would be great, I'll admit. Edit: Remember kids, always finish your videos before you comment. But yeah, GT could use a redub, too. I actually find the Blue Water dub to be pretty decent, though, with decent scripts and acting, so at least there's an alternative unlike with DB. So I still think DB needs it more. Yes, I know there's a BW dub for DB, but from what I've seen it's a step down from their GT dub, mainly in the scripting. Still better than Funi, but not better enough to be a great alternative IMO. Plus the preservations I've found are much lower quality than the GT preservations and are much less watchable as a result.

I've been thinking about it, and I would love to see anime dubbed in the UK and the Philippines. (I'm aware English is a second language, but lets try anyways).
Actually, *Kaitou Saint Tail* is arguably the best Pinoy English dubbed anime that I ever watched and I watched all of its 43 episodes. The dub makes you feel that it's "a show that you should never miss." I hope some distributor would release its whole Pinoy English dub someday.
BanG Dream Season 2 needs to be redubbed. No way a dub that bad can be produced in 2020. About half of the main characters were poorly cast. The dub was so controversial, one of the VAs (and she was one of the good voices in all of it) was harassed off Twitter. We need another studio besides Sentai Filmworks to dub the other seasons.
12:35 Honestly I think the Shin Chan off comment, while understandable as you haven't seen it, strikes me as being far far more pressing that Ghost Stories. The Shin Chan film The Adult Empire Strikes Back is literally considered by some as one of the GREATEST ANIME FILMS OF ALL TIME (see wikipedia and the video by Accented Cinema). This is a cultural touchstone, that's been running longer than the simpsons and has no dub representation which even tries to capture its significance. And I like the Ghost Stories dub to the point where I actually disagree that there'd be a point to redoing it 'straight'. But imagine not being able to watch the Simpsons or Pokemon, or even just the movie A Wonderful Life. After all, why do you think so few anime fans in the west go to Crayon Shin Chan? Cuz I'm willing to bet a lack of faithful dubbing is a factor~
This might be a little off topic and will probably give way to many toxic answers but I'm genuinely curious on the original funimation DBZ dub vs the Kai dub debate. I prefer the kai dub due to better voice, better dialogue, and better pacing but I never truly got why people to this day will trash on the Kai and say the original dub is far beyond it. I just assumed most of it was due to nostalgia but there are people who genuinely think it's a better dub and though everyone is entitled to their opinion/preference (like with dubs vs subs) I just can't see why. Not only are many of the original cast back for kai they are more used to their roles allowing them to give better performances. One rumor that hurt kai was that of it being more "kid friendly" due to stuff like blue popo and a few removals of blood to which made me think that the original was barely censored but not only was it censored it was, in a few cases, more censored than Kai was. Maybe they are bringing up the uncut versions of the original dub but they neglect the uncut versions of Kai as well. Though kai isn't perfect like some of the filters and redrawn frames, even a little needless censorship and dub changes that were still kept on the uncut version of kai but people act like the original dub never had those problems. I do like some music tracks from the original dub and maybe some filler episodes but other than that I don't need it. On the topic of DBZ not being kid friendly while it does have it's moments of blood it just never was that bloody and even if you kept it uncensored it might get a TV-PG rating maybe a TV-14 for the few scenes that, while are mature, aren't that mature compared to other anime.
I'm wondering if magus bride should only have the British accent for the elites. I read something where the American accent was the commoners accent until around the time of America being colonized.

Redubbing og dragonball would be way more worth it than ever redubbing the movies and gt and that's not even entirely my bias speaking... maybe
Loved that damn show, and such catchy music
I feel like I'm being heard. I spoke about the UK getting more anime roles is needed. There's more than just American accents, and it just doesn't feel the same for me.
When the UK is allowed to dub anime, they do a great job. Just look at all the Ghibli dubs. See Arrietty in the UK and its way better than the American one.
I'm american, but I feel like that in general, european dubs are more respectful to the original work. Since America is the center of the world apparently, american dubs tend to americanize concepts more often.
Agreed. They're alot more professional in their voice casting work.
@@NastheVictorious that's not even true though.

Trucker hat!
The thumbnail was something to behold that I myself can't help looking at it with such awe inspiring captivating bliss...
Here's a hot take for you all, with the exception of Sabat as Piccolo, I actually prefer the Canadian cast to the Funimation cast for the characters that were introduced at the time. We can keep Laura Bailey as Trunks, because Laura Bailey. **Harp music, sparkles**
The 30 dollar haircut line was gold though lmaoo
This guy doesn't get fun.
That Super Android 13 dub is good as is lol
Here’s the thing with the British accent, it was never a thing until the 1800’s during Queen Victoria’s reign. So if your setting is in the Industrial Age Britain like In “Moriarty the Patriot” then it’s understandable. But before that time pre-industriation, having none British accents can technically be accurate to the story it takes place in.
What if Aoko Aozaki was in Ancient Magus Bride?
24:47 The Old Bastard from the Big Green DBZ dub is back!
Personally, I think Anime series that never finished their Dubs
(Ex: Super GALS, Familiar of Zero, Megaman Starforce, etc.) should get re-dubbed.
Superman doesn't deserve the hate that he gets.
Cardcaptor Sakura NEEDS a faithful English redub!
Or Funimation could just get the rights to the Blue Water dub of GT. That was more faithful scriptwise and had the original score.
I like the music for the dbz movie
i know its "not accurate" but I think the DBZ Super 13 movie is better dubbed, purely because the sub is just so boring. the dub gave 13 a personality, stereotypical it may be. but better than the sub did, which was nothing.
So in a “so bad it’s good” type of way?
@@crysler2046 not even that. just turned a boring movie into something enjoyable because of the changes.
Happy to know I'm not the only who thought the subbed version of the movie was bland as fuck.
I would love to see Dragonball and GT get accurate redubs because they both had some weird script changes and awkward performances
9:06 Rest in peace Kirby Morrow.
Rip Kirby Morrow.

Or whatever the term I'm looking for is, because it's not like their old dub hadn't aired in UK as well, so it's possible for them to score a place there for that.
Also... thinking about it would love just more language dubs, more portrayals of characters is just something that I love to watch, I know that DB has just spoilt me on this though.
Not much financial point to doing this, but would love to see a Irish Dub of Dragon Ball... or any anime.
Might have more kids interested in the language while they're young. Dying language and all.
@@deterlanglytone Both Kai and Super aired on UK TV with Funimation's dub. Those channels are now owned by Sony, so it's unlikely they'd ever air Ocean's.
@@IMissBionix Good point! Forgot about Kix. Though that channel is gone now, at least I can't find it on the tv, edit: Also what channel did Super air on? I never saw it. So I don't see much room for Sony stopping them, but you never know.
Without going into too much political stuff, given the UK is leaving the EU region, meaning that for the first time ROI and British tv broadcast regions are going to be separated.
That are a few channels that are going to be removed, could be room for new agreements there. But it's unlikely given Sony's reach. This does explain why Sony's Movie channel shows anime films at times, hadn't recalled their ownership of Funi somehow.
Sony owns both Aniplex and Funimation, as well as Crunchyroll, which it has recently acquired from Warner Bros and its parent AT&T.

Honestly, there aren't that many anime's that come to mind when I think of re-dub. If anything I would like to see more kid bast anime's get a re-dub like most of Precure. It's no big deal, but it would be nice if they didn't cut so much and change things. Precure is being shown more in the west, but most people will likely think of the bad Saban dub. Just my thoughts.
I feel like Akame Ga Kill needs to be redubbed, if only because the voice direction was lousy for the most part.
Canadian Goku was voiced by Rolf.
Shaggy has to use a nonillion percent of his power against Super Son of a Shepherd 99 Blue God Rolf and he still _always_ loses.
You’re referring to Peter Kalamis, who was the second Canadian voice actor for Adult Goku in Dragon Ball Z. And yeah, he was also the voice of Rolf in Ed, Edd n Eddy.
Kamehameha ed boi!!
I wouldn't mind a GT redub, but I'd rather they redo the dub for the original Dragon Ball. That show definitely deserves to get a Kai style redub.
@Juljan Peshtani it’s ok and it’s better than the original Z Dub, I just wish more people would show more love to OG Dragon Ball.
DBS has a pretty good if at times contentious dub. I obviously watched the trailer to the Funimation English dub when it was an upcoming hot mess!
@Juljan Peshtani alright, it really is excellent!
3:03 Don't play PSO2 with the English audio lest you be cursed with Afin's Britstralian accent. (which his sister notably doesn't have and really none of them should even have, I think the only reason they even tried to give him a British accent is because he calls the player character "Aibou" in Japanese which they translated as "mate" but why didn't they go with "partner" or "buddy"? At least Peitro having a French accent makes sense given his name, changing "mai furendo" to "mon ami")
You should check out Slayers and irresponable captain taylor dub.
Those dubs don’t need fixing
I’ve got to say on the topic of accents, it seems odd but in the context of being a dub makes a lot of sense to generally use accents that give off the vibe that the original language production does.
24:15 As a former US Navy man I can attest that USMC audio is actually pretty accurate. Most of those poor dumb devil dogs do sound that stupid.

I think it's a good idea you're talking about this. I grew up with English dubs but it would be cool if some animation would be redubbed like Dragon Ball GT
I don't know if this is likely but I would love to see a redub of the 1995 film, _Totsuzen! Neko no Kuni Banipal Witt (Catnapped!)._
Currently, the film hasn't been relicensed and released anywhere after Pioneer/Geneon went out of business with its last home video solicitation dating back in January 2004, and I hardly see anyone talk about this film, but if the film does get relicensed either by Discotek Media, Netflix, or GKIDS I wouldn't mind seeing a new redub version of this film with a better script and voice acting, but I would like the Geneon dub to be featured as an extra audio track if Discotek Media or GKIDS license the film.
I remember seeing a trailer for it on the previews of my Sailor Moon VHS tapes. I've always been really curious about it.
Honestly I'd love to see a Hajime No Ippo re dub and a dub of the newer seasons, but I'd love them to keep the same actors. The og dub had a hanging with the boys vibe.
We actually talked about Ippo in our last redub video!
Ghost stories dub is god tier
Goku's squeal when getting punched in the dick will never not be funny.
"Pokémon" Season 9 onwards needs to be redubbed with a more faithful script. The Pokémon Company International treats it as a joke.
You should do a video about shows that should get a dub, like Banana Fish, god someone please give Banana Fish a dub!! DAMN YOU AMAZON!!
The only problem I see with a real Ghost Stories dub is that the joke one is considered to be so good for what it is that I just don't see there being much demand for it.
Yeah, I watched it sub and let me tell you, there isn't any meat on those bones.
Agreed. The dubs for those movies have their issues, but they're fine as is.
We’ll be more thorough in talking about the dub VAs for Higurashi once we do a full video on it >.<
Interesting point about European accents too!

If you take away andorid 13's accent your left a big pile of nothing.
Why have you not gone back to music since the Sawano video with Mi Guo?
Raise your hand if you still want to beat Steven Foster with an idiot stick!
Higurashi could use a good dub.
24:00 US perspective in WWII
Post pearl harbor, there was US hostility and racial animosity expressed not only in the military but generally the country.
We had US concentration camps for any suspected US-Japanese supposed to be Japan-aligned, and several cartoons back in the day that were shown fighting the Axis of Evil countries, even some depictions as flagrant racist stereotypes. Such examples include the many black & white Looney Tune shorts, Popeye taking on Japan ships singlehandedly, and even Disney US war propaganda. There was A LOT of content to be watched...

A vid on the Haruhi dub would be cool
It’s mostly a nostalgia thing trust me if that dub came out in this day and age the same people saying “grandma Goku” would be trashing it
I still get a kick out of the Shin-Chan dub. Good stuff.
I'm wondering if magus bride should only have the British accent for the elites. I read something where the American accent was the commoners accent until around the time of America being colonized.
