    SOME CLARIFICATIONS: Ok I just realised there’s a missing line at 16:32. It should’ve been “these newer voices are at least somewhat reminiscent of the old ones but with much stronger direction.” Some people in the comments seem to think we’re criticising the Remake’s recasting but on the contrary we’re a little conflicted. We think the new performances are definitely better but not sure if that’s down to the new actors being better, or the superior voice direction of the remake (the Remake had FIVE voice directors). However it’s evident that this point didn’t come through because I forgot to add that line in in the editing process so we apologise for that.
    Also it feels like we gave the Evangelion redub a less-than-flattering representation when it probably deserved better. We didn’t want to bloat the video any more than it already is by adding in more audio examples but it should go without saying that many of the flaws we showed about the ADV dub were done better in the new dub. However by only showing a few comparisons in this video, that made it seem like those were the only meaningful differences between the two dubs when there's actually a LOT more.

      Should have mentioned a unique situation that happened for the Cartoon Network show OK K.O. Let's Be Heroes. See, K.O, the protagonist, was originally set to be voiced by Stephanie Nadolny (The original english voice of Kid Goku, to get the Dragon Ball connection), as she did in a smartphone game, the pilot and even got to record some episodes for the main show, but due to the fact that they couldn't comply as specific schedule for her, she was replaced by Courtenay Taylor, who's more associated with video game voice work. I call it a unique example, because, well, this is the protagonist. In fact, it happened with Enid, too, originally voiced by Mena Suvari in the pilot, then replaced by Ashly Burch.

      When the eva dub originally started they didn't get any message that the show was supposed to be grounded and so they just guessed that it was a somewhat more serious but still goofy monster show until the original producers contacted them and told them what the show really was

      Personally, I’m a little mixed on the Remake Voice Cast. Brianna, John Eric Bentley, and Max Mittleman did a great job at voice Aerith, Barret, and Red XIII respectively. Yuffie’s new voice actress is eh… it sounds the same, it’s fine. But the new voices for Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth, Zack, and Reno & Rude are just terrible. Say what you will about their previous voice actors, but they actually showed more emotion and nuance to the characters they voiced, compared to the whiny, generic, and lifeless acting their Remake actors convey. Honestly, the goofy dialogue in the Compilation felt grounded compared to the Remake’s more MCU humor so that it could be hip with the kids.

    For voice actors work is hard to come by and we usually fall in love with the characters we voice; so getting recast REALLY stings. Sucks even worse if it's because of bullshit drama instead of something more reasonable like production issues (for example a scheduling conflict or legal issues due to lisensing). I'd also like to add that even if you feel the original actor's performance was lackluster, it's still worth giving them a chance to reprise their role considering it probably wasn't even their fault. A good director and scriptwriter can make just about any voice actor sound great. But even the best voice actor in the world can't overcome a crappy script and crappy directing.

    I'm still healing from how the 4kids actors were treated. I know Pokemon's dub was a Hack Dub and was anglicized all to heck, but I always thought the actors themselves and whoever did the ADR direction were actually really good. They always sounded so natural to my English-speaking ears and brought so much life to those characters even if they were forced to change rice balls/onigiri to Jelly Donuts.

      They should have offered the 4kids cast their jobs back when the non-compete contract ran out, or if not that, when 4kids went out of business and the contract had no meaning. But no, they kept going on with the new inferior voices and now their excuse is "well now they've been doing it for longer than the old cast, and changing back would be just as jarring to fans now as it was to you!" Despite many new fans that weren't around for the 4kids dub preferring the 4kids voices... and of course they're not redubbing old stuff, so they're perfectly happy to keep profiting from their work.

The only major exception being Ash himself, but that was because his voice actos, Gabriel Ramos, had to moved from Mexico to Argentina during the last episodes from the D&P series and The Pokémon Company didn't allow him to record his dialogues remotely. "One actor that soured the experience" for me I loved everyone in the Final Fantasy VII Remake, but Sephiroth, Reno and Zack were VERY jarring...especially with Sephiroth being one of my favorite villains in any Video Game, George Newbern's take fit the voice I had in my head of Sephiroth playing FFVII as a kid, and fit similarly with his Japanese counterpart. His performance in Crisis Core was award worthy despite what people's personal opinions are on that game as a whole, the game wasn't amazing, but his PERFORMANCE as Sephiroth the "Hero" we all heard about in FFVII, and his decent into madness was perfect. With his most recent work being the Dissidia games I was REALLY looking forward to George being in the Remake, as I was Steve Burton for Cloud. Especially considering Steve and Beau returned for the 2015 trailer for FFVII:Remake as Cloud and Barret. It was a pretty nasty tease to have them replaced after :\
    I have no ill will for the new cast, they're just doing a job, but the voices for Sephiroth, Reno and Zack were just...off. They're just not right for the characters.

    This is a nitpicky pet peeve of mine, so feel free to ignore it since it's not even related to the main subject. I recommend against using "Canada" as a recording descriptor (as in, "it was recorded in Canada," or "the Canadian dub") when referring to a single show, especially when you name cities (and in some cases, specific studios) for other examples. Like the United States, the country has multiple very distinct talent pools. As another commenter noted, Dragon Ball Z was recorded in "Canada," yet those actors didn't reprise their roles for the "Canadian dub" of GT. That's because a decision was made to cut costs and instead of recording the show in Vancouver, like Z was, it was instead recorded (alongside the second "Canadian dub" of the original Dragon Ball) in Calgary. Another great example is the Beyblade franchise. The first two generations of the show were dubbed in Toronto and share many actors as a result. Prior to Bang Zoom undercutting Ocean, the third generation (Burst) was recorded primarily in Vancouver, with additional casting in Calgary and Edmonton. It shares zero actors with the first two shows.
    Of course, the "no Canadian actors can reprise their roles" curse doesn't differentiate between cities. Regardless of where it was recorded, we've seen casts across the country completely replaced. Viz has the potential to be the first anime distributor to snub every major talent pool in Canada. The original Sailor Moon dub was produced in Toronto. The redub and Crystal weren't. The original Hunter x Hunter was dubbed in Calgary. The remake wasn't. Viz used to dub everything in Vancouver, now it's been 10 years since their last one. If they hand Yashahime to anyone other than Ocean, then you'll have a direct example. On the off chance they even dub Hakushon Daimao 2020, there's no way they dub it in Montreal like the original Bob in the Bottle was.
    It's frustrating because it feels like there's nothing for Canadian actors in this industry anymore. They aren't allowed to reprise and grow with the roles they originated (in English), nor are they allowed to take on new ones. New anime projects that use Canadian casts are far and few between. The ones that do exist tend to be aimed specifically at kids, like Zoids Wild, or are set up for failure. It's telling that when people talk about modern Canadian anime dubs, their go-to's are Gintama, Kiznaiver and World Trigger. Each of those dubs is over three years old, and in the case of Gintama, that cast has already been replaced.

      Toronto specifically, I can count how many uncut dubs they did on one hand and that's sad to think about.
      Also, YashaHime ended up being a Vancouver-LA hybrid dub, which means David Kaye was able to reprise his role along with the rest of the cast.

    Honestly I want to hear the different side of the coin and why for the most part is this far less frequent with the Japanese voice cast. Barring circumstances where the original actor dies, retires, or is caught in a scandal, Japanese voice actors are scarcely replaced. Even in cases where the actor is super popular and everywhere.
    Is it because culturally, JP voice actors are held with higher esteem, have a higher celebrity status, and are considered a much more valuable commodity? Is it due to Japan is a much smaller country and the location isn’t an issue? Or do JP voice actors sign contracts that make them bound to voice a character for life? I’ve heard multitudes of reasons.
    The exception to this seems to be remakes, the JP dubs of FMA Brotherhood and Sailor Moon Crystal by and large replaced most of the original voice cast, even when in FMAs case they did their best to preserve a large majority of the cast for English.

    • @IMissBionix
      @IMissBionix 4 года назад +12

      Japan is an island with a landmass half the size of Texas, with over a quarter of its population just in Tokyo. The geographic concerns are mostly moot. You also have to remember that those are the original actors working in the show's native country. More resources and a higher prestige is given to that than what a foreign adaptation would receive. Seiyuu who land lead roles in popular anime often see their star rise, snowballing into plenty of other opportunities. You can be the lead in the English version of the same show and still struggle to make ends meet.
      With FMA Brotherhood and Sailor Moon Crystal, I imagine it was either a creative decision to start fresh or a more cynical marketing tactic. Get younger actors in a bid to appeal to a new audience.

    • @reyonXIII
      @reyonXIII 4 года назад +3

      @@IMissBionix Those two really are the only standout examples. Of course, Setsuna and Shingo would still have to be recast since Chiyoko Kawashima had since retired in 2001. Hell, even if they kept majority of the old actors, many of the villains would still have to be recast, given the deaths or retirement of their actors, like Kunzite, Prince Demand, Saphir, Wiseman, Telulu.
      For some, they probably can't sound as young as they used to. Kotono Mitsuishi still able to pull the voice at all is a goddamn miracle.
      But, say, Akira Ishida as Fish's Eye. His voice tends to be more along the lines of Gaara nowadays.
      Sounding younger like Reid from Tales of Eternia is still possible, but I'm not so sure he can still convincingly sound like a woman like he used to. I imagine that for the upcoming Eternal movie, Fish's Eye might be voiced by Ayumu Murase or any newer male seiyuu that can sound so feminine.
      Honestly, the 90s Sailor Moon anime surprises me so much with how many 70s and early 80s era seiyuu were in it. By then, they were all major stars, making the anime such an all-star cast. But by consequence, a lot of them can no longer reprise their roles for various reasons.

      @DigitalStarry 4 года назад +2

      Honestly part of the issue is that they dubbed the Definitive Edition content ten years after the initial dub, instead of localizing the Japan only PS3 release that came out only a year after the original game and would have likely kept most of the original cast if it had been dubbed at the time. Unfortunately now the dub for the game is a frankenstein of two different dubs obviously done at two different studios and times (notice how the audio for the new skits is far lower than the old ones or how some of the characters sound older) with half the cast replaced,
      Because of those issues, I just played the game with the Japanese dub. The original dub may be highly praised, but the jarring mix of two different dubs was way too offputting and strange.

    Another video game recast similar to Final Fantaysy 7 was Final Fantasy 14's recast. Throughout A Realm Reborn, we had the NA cast dubbing the characters in English, for better or for worst. But one thing was for certain, they were improving. A lot of people didn't like the voices in the beginning because they felt they were too hammy or weren't appropriate. But it had been improving. Especially by the time we got Gideon Emery (the actor for FF12's Balthier) monologuing as Urianger, a character that we hadn't heard speak much and once he did? He just knocks it right out of the park. However, once the Heavensward expansion came out, the entire main cast was replaced by London actors. And now with hindsight, we can literally hear them leading up to this. A lot of the new characters introduced throughout ARR were played British actors in London. So while they weren't replaced (except for one due to a rather horrific tragedy), the characters that had been with us since the literal beginning were replaced and the worst part? Some of them had no idea. Sam Riegal, the first voice for Alphinaud, was asked about it and that's what he told a fan. That he had no idea they were going to be replaced. It's a real shame because, like the EVA, these were actors that were improving as the voice direction got better and more cohesive but for whatever reason, Square Enix decided to move recording from LA to London.
    Now, don't get me wrong, I actually really love the current cast especially because we've had two more expansions and one more on the way with these new voices. They are really really good and well casted. But that doesn't mean I'm still not sad and feel like it was a shame that it happened to begin with.

It seems to run into some similar issues as the old Eva dub, where while it's still faithful to the original in terms of writing, it runs into a lot of the same quality issues in terms of performance. However, unlike the Eva dub, it barely aired on TV anywhere, so most fans of the series were either introduced to it through the internet or through home video releases. I don't get the impression from most Utena fans that there's much nostalgia for the dub the same way so many people are attached to Eva's. Recasts would be pretty much inevitable anyway, since the vast majority of the actors from the 90s dub are no longer active in the industry.

      There's a show Ocean worked on for Viz back in the early 00's called Project ARMS, which was an adaptation that started changing and cutting things from the manga in it's 2nd Season and ended right before the manga's final arc (The anime was made in mind to be a commercial to the manga while it was near completion). It's an underrated scifi action manga that deserves an anime remake, and if it does become a thing, it makes me wonder whether or not if it will be dubbed by Ocean again or will it end up with a new cast.

    Before watching the video, I’m pretty sure that the whole 4Kids to TPCI recasts in Pokémon’s English dub is gonna be brought up, so I’m gonna add one more fact regarding anipoke recasts: as far as I know, international dubs were mostly unaffected by the English dub cast switch and the TPCI seasons kept being dubbed with pretty much the same casts. However, as the years went on, pretty much every single non-JP dub has recasted Ash at least once for all sorts of reasons (distributors’ decision, voice actor unavailability, change in dubbing studio, etc). I recall the most notorious case being in the Brazilian Portuguese dub, where Ash had been voiced by the same actor up until season 18 (the longest running one as far as I know) when it was suddenly changed partway through just because of a random decision by the dubbing company or distributor (don’t remember very well, someone correct me if possible). The actor was apparently still fully available and willing to keep the role but the higher ups stuck with the recast. And ironically enough, Ash’s getting recast again for the BR dub of the Journeys series so that second actor didn’t last very long. Anyway, while most international Ash voice actors had obviously outlasted Veronica Taylor’s time in the role, it’s quite sad that only Rica Matsumoto has managed to keep the role for the whole series.

    • @AtelierGod

      From what I can find the Swedish dub actor for Ash has never been replaced and still sounds just about the same.

    • @KremBotop
      @KremBotop 4 года назад +1

      @@AtelierGod That’s good to know! Kudos to the Swedish for managing this rare feat. Never heard that dub but maybe I’ll look a few clips out of curiosity. Wonder if the rest of the classic characters had the same luck. Btw, I got a refresher on the BR dub situation and it was 4Kids-To-TPCi levels of recasting. I’d say even worse. So those first 18 seasons were all dubbed in São Paulo with a relatively consistent cast, with the original actor of Ash even serving as voice director for the latter half of his tenure, but he had to move to another country (I think it was Portugal) after S18 wrapped up. So, as the show was left without a director the distributors simply changed studios to one located in Río de Janeiro, which means that pretty much every single character (both the returning legacy ones and the concurrent XY crew) were all recast at once. At least a few 4Kids actors got to keep/reprise their roles at some point in the TPCi era so I imagine this was an extreme change for Brazilian fans. And to add insult to injury, the next studio change made for Journeys’ dub is also to one located in Rio.

      @@KremBotop I do have the third movie on my drive since you can’t buy it anymore it’s completely out of print and had to go to a service that converts vhs tapes to usb just to be able to watch it again (together with the other two as well and many others but I can only put up so many before filling it out) which is the problem with Swedish dubs, they protect the copyright Ip with the full force of the law but then never release them outside of the first printing ever again even if that first printing was the vhs tapes unless it’s something super popular and even then it might take several years in between releases. As far as I know about the rest of the cast I have no idea, Brook had the same guy until when he left but I don’t remember his sun and moon voice enough to say if it’s the same guy and misty is in the same boat, however there seems to be a sort of want to always reprise old voice actors for roles they’ve done before unless the actor is dead (RIP Rikard Wolff) which can be seen as the guy who voiced Scooby-doo when it first came out still voices the dog in Swedish though I can’t say the same for the rest of the cast in the franchise.

Corey Marshall lives there and Lisle Wilkerson swung down but everybody else had to be recast. Though two actors from the old games loved doing their characters so much that they helped fans with a mod.
    For Digimon Tri/Kizuna, Studiopolis tried mightily to get the band back together and mostly succeeded. They nearly recast Tai, as you allude to, until Jeff Nimoy was like "hey, I have Joshua Seth's number right here."
    Eva, my guess is it was a matter of not having the audio available from the old dub. Normally, that material does get sent back to the licensor and they own it. But way back, Eva was owned by Gainax. Now it's owned by Khara, and that was not a clean break.

    As far as FFVII's new cast is concerned, for the most part, I already consider the current actors to be the definitive versions of these characters in English. I do still kind of miss George Newbern as Sephiroth, but Tyler Hoechlin still does a really good job in my opinion. Sephiroth still feels like Sephiroth. The rest of the main cast is pretty much perfect in their roles as well. Whenever I think of Cloud Strife now, it's Codey Christian's voice I hear in my head. He replaced Steve Burton for me almost instantly. Honestly the only recast I'm not sold on yet is Zack's new VA. I love the performances from everyone else. Admittedly though, part of the reason I'm more willing to embrace the cast change is because I never had a strong attachment to the original cast. I did grow up with them, but even as a kid, I always felt like FFVII's casting was a very mixed bag. Some casting choices I really liked, and others just never hit the mark for me. To be fair, this could very well be the result of the voice direction, and not the actors themselves, but I'll never know that for sure. All I can do is go by what I heard, and what I heard from the FFVII compilation frequently left me underwhelmed. So when the recast was announced, I was just interested to see what a fresh take could bring to the characters. The end result, at least in my opinion, has been a huge improvement almost across the board.

      @@TheCartoonCipher I do think Lance is interesting at least.
      We barely here him actually say things in KH 1, and I think the direction we swung into is prob better, but I think it's an interesting idea at least to make Sephi sound like a normal person rather than anime-villainy. It really is humanizing to him, esp hypothetically pre-crazy.

    You brought up multiple times that the FFVII Remake cast was different than the original cast we’ve had for over a decade. If you’ve played the game, there’s actually a reason why they have a new cast. Basically there’s a meta thing within the story about the game deviating and fate trying to make sure things don’t. So they’re essentially not the same version of the characters. It’s not a choice I’d make, but it makes sense.

      I really like the new English cast, and actually prefer them to the Advent Children cast in most cases, but I don't think the voice change was done for any narrative reasons. If it was, then we'd have a different cast for both English and Japanese, but that's not the case. The Japanese cast remains the same. It's only the English dub that saw a complete recast.

    This might be an unpopular opinion, but I really don't mind if they just do a completely new cast for Shaman King 2021. The landscape of dubbing for the original SK vs today is so radically different combined with almost everything about the new anime being different aside from most of the voice cast coming back "which obviously only really happened because the mangaka pushed it" I just feel like it would be smoother and easier if we just did a new cast of more standard anime VAs rather then try and go through the extra effort of getting back VAs who likely haven't done much anime anymore. Obviously it's not out of the question for VAs to come back, Laura Bailey by some miracle actually came back as Tohru in spite of doing almost no anime for years and the same was just recently proven with Yashahime and the return of most of the Inuyasha voice cast. Now obviously it should be noted I did not grow up on SK so I don't have the nostalgia that would make me want it, but even so I still feel like it would just be smoother and easier if we just got a new cast. Although in saying that I would rather Yoh sound more like his dub voice than the Japanese just because I'd rather he sound like high pitch male than a low pitch woman but that's just me. (Also side not I also wouldn't be opposed to a new cast for the Digimon reboot just because I feel it would make Last Evolution more impactful as a swan song for that original cast. Also I would be fine with a complete dub recast for Zatch Bell if they ever remade that and that IS an anime I grew up on with strong nostalgia and emotional attatchment towards)
