    Baccano! is widely regarded in the community as one of the best English dubs of an anime. It takes place in America and features a plethora of Western accents and cultural influence. Today we wanted to reflect on what makes the dub special to so many people, examining everything from its scripting to the performances to the sound design. Will everyone like it? Was there any room for improvement? Was there anything important from the original audio that was left on the cutting room floor? Side note: apologies that this video is edited kind of rough, there’s some accidental repeated shots, a lot of it feels kinda static and the audio isn’t balanced super well. Hopefully the closed captions can remedy that. Also feels like the wording in some parts was way too vague, if you have any questions about it feel free to ask us on Twitter.
    Big thank you to Connor/CDawgVA ( / cdawgva ) for joining us to discuss the performances in the Baccano dub, as well as Tyler Walker ( / monkeyshines9 ) for answering all our questions about the dubbing process for this show.

      I’m sorry, but I don’t want to sound petty, but as a huge Anime fan, it makes me cringe when people refer to real, Japanese Anime as cartoons. They are much different in the well drawn, highly stylized, and attention to detail that American Cartoons just don’t have. So I will close in saying how well you did this video, in content, research, your analysis and depiction of the property you are reviewing, and overall knowledge of the industry in general. That makes my request regarding semantics seems to now feel silly. 😉 You really DID put a huge amount of heart and soul into your video. I own the Baccano series and everything you mentioned here tells me you do too, or if not, you’re obviously are a fan.keep up the great work🥰

    Baccano is my favorite anime. Ever. I've watched both dubbed and subbed quite a few times, and the conclusion that I've drawn is that: in dialog heavy anime (ie baccano, Steins gate, durarara etc) I prefer the dubbed. It makes for a more immersive experience, I find. I'm not a slow reader, but not a particularly fast one either, and when the dialog moves so quickly, it's easy to miss the end of lines sometimes. Or find myself trying to speed up my reading to make sure to get it all in.
    That being said, the language in the subbed is superior imo. Either way, Baccano is the shit. More people need to watch it, in whatever form they care for.

      Here’s a thing though, Bakemonogatari, which is the probably one of the MOST dialogue heavy shows, cannot compare as a dub. Reasons vary out incredibly wide but if you haven’t watched it and plan on enjoying it to the fullest possible extent, learn Japanese first.

    • @eddiejansen3918
      @eddiejansen3918 3 года назад +4

      I agree with you entirely, perhaps I should've said that *most* dialog heavy anime are better to experienced dubbed. The entire monogatari series, I would argue, is the converse to that. The language seems to be so much prettier in the latter series. Baccano, while dense, doesn't use as much flowery language as BKM does.

  • @BumblingFool912
    @BumblingFool912 4 года назад +70

    I don't think either are objectively 'better' than the other.
    They are two ways of accessing, and perhaps in a more emotional way - enjoying the same source material if one has access to both the subbed and their regional dub.
    While a dub is an interpretation of an already existing script - that very script is in and of itself an adaptation of the narrative;
    How either colour or shift that narrative in whatever adverse way...is kind of part of the charm for either experience.
    [[personal opinion time]] I'm always defaulted to dubs as a consumer of anime purely cause I suck at fast reading cause I genuinely struggle to read subtitles while also focusing on the animation of well..the anime.
    That said - I will always give new and undubbed anime a go, and since we live in a streaming based era where we can just keep moving back in the episode my main issue of preference kind of disappears, and usually when I really get into an anime I will be better able to follow along character's interactions anyways being so in tuned with their speech patterns regardless of language.
    anyways.
    sorry for the thesis, I just wish this silly conflict was resolved and simply discussed more =w=

    Only CON to both the Dubbed and the Subbed is good luck on finding it legally. I don’t know who owns the rights to it anymore, it was Netflix at one point. Now it’s not there, and finding a DVD version is going to have you looking at it and going ouch at it’s price should you find it. Which really honestly stinks because this is a great anime.

    • @nitesurfer247

      Try going online to Robert’s Corner Anime Store or The Right Stuff. I used to get all my anime from those two back from 2004- 2016. I have over 500 series, (mostly in the Art Boxes) which is a really nice way to display the set and less video DVD cases that are sometimes separated from the other in a series and it’s not that much to get them with your first new DVD of the series as you buy the monthly (usually) new ones that come out depending on the numbers in the sets.Amazon is still a good way but they will cost a bit more but in “The Marketplace” you can find good or excellent condition, used DVD’s but make sure you read the comments from other buyers who rate the seller on speed, condition, and general customer service. I have been happy with many sellers and have gotten to where I buy more used than new nowadays. Good luck 👍🏻

    • @Fujoshi1412
      @Fujoshi1412 4 года назад

      PJ I’ve already got it? I’m just mentioning it’s just hard to come by. Yes it’s great but it’s availably is a CON. But I’ve never seen the anime on Right Stuf, most sites that used to have it are sold out so now eBay is the main site I know of that sells Baccano. But those people know it’s rare or limited in numbers. So the prices are higher then the original price. That’s not including the volumes which only limited amount of episodes on it. The anime is good. Getting the manga or light novel not too hard. But as I stated it’s largest CON is exclusively to the anime itself on it’s availability. I don’t know a streaming service that has it now, Netflix used to, I don’t think they do anymore.

    • @Fujoshi1412
      @Fujoshi1412 4 года назад +1

      PJ I’m not trying to be rude but just pointing out, most of the sites you mention don’t have it. If they do the shipping is high or it’s used and the price is still pretty high. Amazon indeed has it. But finding a version that works with your DVD player is complicated. And the price varies greatly with blu ray from around 40 all together to dvd which is about on the hundred range. Despite stating that it works for US blu ray players some comments complain it doesn’t. So it’s also a risk factor. All I’m trying to get at is this anime subbed or dubbed is GREAT! Finding it legally? That’s is the huge CON. I’m hoping one of the streaming sites picks it up gain. Because then it would be more widely available.

    • @steffenkawa8374

      Steffen kawa you are missing the point. It’s not easily accessible. And even the cheaper legal options have its bumps. It’s a great anime, but finding it legally is costly for some people, so I’m just hoping a streaming service will once again pick up the rights to this anime. Along with a lot of other anime out there that are in a limbo of sorts to audiences outside of Japan. Baccano is an example of a fantastic anime, but one you can’t watch off a streaming service.

Like, I'll happily pop on the Log Horizon dub, if only because it's mostly in a fantasy world anyway and because it has this super charming Zombieland/Kick-Ass energy to it. Baccano! is one of those rare gems where the English ADR just cannot afford to cheap out on and still respect themselves as red-blooded Americans. When the Japanese write and animate a story that takes place in the US, it gets positively personal for that Texas ADR crew and so demands extra impeccable care to get the voice direction right. Even when it was not what the guys in Japan had in first in mind. It's where this show, Cowboy Bebop, and Black Lagoon dubs really enhance the watch over their originals.

    S2 will never come. They didn't include something to the Genoard 1931/32 plotline that will make a direct sequel impossible. and skipping on stories just to keep the ball rolling... Doubt.

    Szilard is a hungarian name but this accent sounds nothing like a hungarian accent. Its more slavic, but if ur not hungarian u wont pick that up, so i think they did a good job.

    This is old but the American vernacular really raises the bar. An American would never say American citizen to ourselves but red blood American. Those make it believable.

    Fantastic video! One of if not my favourite Anime. Fantastic dub, great localization which serves to appeal more to western audiences and fantastic performances. Jacuzzi in the dub is different but still effective, annoying and unassuming and then he becomes our hero!

    I subbed to this channel after the FCF scam that violated federal law by asking about mental disabilities for exclusionary purposes on the top 100 anime poll that TheAnimeMan posted. CdawgVA was a knowing part of this scam, a lot of the anime community may have forgiven them but if you look at your subscriber metrics you'll see that you gained a shit ton of subs during this period. I got the notification but choose not to support pieces of sh*t like CDawgVA. Looking forward to your next video.

      Ian Sinclair’s one of Funimation’s best and brightest right now, almost being a spiritual successor to the hole left behind by Travis Willingham (even doing that very thing by becoming his replacement as Yu Kanda in D.Gray-man). You’ll also know him as Brook in One Piece, Chuck in Panty and Stocking, Nile Dok in Attack on Titan, The Reaper in Assassination Classroom, and Magna in Black Clover.

    For me the sub is always better than the dub,simply bcz the jp is the original language baccano use and for me the original language is always better(for example i m an indonesian and i hate watching movie from another country in indonesian language not cause it were bad it is cause it was weird)even tho baccano was more make sense is eng dub cause y know it is take place in the 1930s but still jp is the original language of the anime,i dont say dub is bad it is good really2 good everything hits diffrent in dub but that is the thing dub is always between thrash or something really good that makes you think you watch a whole diffrent show that is why i prefer the sub instead of dub

    i consider dubs better and more enjoyable for theses reasons: in subs you must read to understand what there saying or know there language, this can be a problem for slow readers who would spend more time reading the show and missing most of the animations, unless you pause for each read, but then that makes it less immersive and feels like a book rather then a animation.
    a picture paints a thousand words of emotion and intention, but the story's plot advancement is mostly gained through dialog and expressive communication we all call speaking our words with constrictive meaning infused noise,
    i rather hear and understand the characters words as they speak for them selves then to read the text over the video and miss occasional gestures of emotion and body language. i prefer dub, but will say sub isn't so intolerable to read once in a while.
