There are so many things we could learn from watching other peoples art. Today is a tiny bit of a discussion about using your eyes and getting free painting classes every day by just slowing down and looking at peoples work for a longer time. Eying where these painters placed their highlights, where stippling is great, what colors that transitions well, how to combine techniques and brushstrokes. This video is obviously sponsored by Skillshare.
I did get permission from all painters to use their artwork in the video:
Maxime Penaud - / the_secret_workshop
Richard Gray - / daemonrich
Aythami Alonso - / aythamialonso

Painting miniatures for your warhammer & d&d games. Age of sigmar and warhammer 40k. Space Marines, Space Wolves, Stormcast Eternals, beastclaw raiders, ogor mawtribes, cities of sigmar, chaos space marines, painting scale models, miniature busts! How to paint NMM. How to paint warhammer, how to paint d&D figures.
I can’t stress enough how important and smart this video is. That’s the difference between hearing and LISTENING. In order to learn anything you need to analyze and internalize what you found out. It needs to be a conscious effort. Just as in school, you won’t learn anything just by reading, you need to understand what are you looking at.
Jagelsdorf Creates I would add to learn about the colors your working with. With that being said you won’t meet the mark that you set out for when looking at the colors of another artist model. Be happy with your own skills and in time take it to the next level
Very well said 👌
Painting with the intent of getting better at painting. Not painting to get a cool mini. Getting a cool mini will be a byproduct of getting better at painting.
Instablaster...
Ever since I started to get serious about painting the whole world has changed. Everything I see and look at now is different. I spent about 10 minutes just staring at my fridge, looking at how the light reflects. Everything I see looks like it has been painted in a sense. All the textures in the world and every color makes me feel like a young person seeing something for the first time. Paying attention to the details in all things that you see in this world has really helped my painting skills. I look at everything as if it was painted now.
Paying attention to these too help out a lot. This goes the same for looking at others paint jobs. I really admire the details and colors used.
No longer do I just use simple colors. Even simple things I paint have 4-8 different colors and hours and hours worth of laying on the same colors to get different tones and colors. Just like in real life.
The Universe is the MASTER painter!
wow, thank you for sharing
That Space Marine looks more like a paint job than the actual paint job.
its freaking me out that your right. *paints you*
Coming from a background as a 3D artist, it's interesting to hear your thoughts. In 3D, we have to understand what it is we're displaying from a physically true point of view i.e understanding indexes of refraction, how light scatters through certain surfaces, the difference between metallic and non metallic highlights etc. Also understanding how 3D lights within the scene help and influence a composition (warm and cold lights, fill lights etc). Understanding physically accurate properties of a material can make huge differences. The troll at the beginning had a great example of subsurface scattering painted on it's ear. Using a colour wheel to understand the relationship between colours is also extremely helpful.
Over the last 1,5 years or so I've been doing this exact thing, and I was able to extend my painting horizon so much, both with respect to use of colours and use of techniques. Very useful stuff, and I can only recommend it, too!
The red part in the models left ear is brilliant. It represents subsurface scattering of light, which you mentioned came from the cave onto the models left backside. Such an attention to detail of the painter.
I have never painted miniatures before but your content is inspiring me to get into it! I would love to get into playing TT games as well.
Q is legit. Don't trust the media. you should look into either Killteam or Warcry :) theyre much smaller format and super easy to get into. and you can eventually work your team into a bigger army for the main line games.
@@cn.st.182 ew don't trick people in to buying those sub-par models from a sub-par game, let people look around themselves.
CN. ST. Totally agree I just got into war hammer because of this channel but don’t have the budget to play the bigger games
@@kieran6417 just be patient and build your collection slowly. It's a long term goal to start playing with most people's budgets.
Play skirmish games like Malifaux, Kill Team or Infinity if you feel as such. Search the web if you want to get into it. I say Skirmish cause it's cheaper to play and you're gonna be more focused on making every model really good instead of batch painting as quickly as possible because of model overload.
I have mostly improved my skills because of your videos! Thanks for the quality content , keep up the good work!
I look at images like this and think, "Oh cool, I could try something like that." Then I look at the size of the miniature I realise there is no way I can achieve that level of detail on such a tiny surface. Still, I recently took up the hobby again and I am much better today than I was when I was a teenager.
Something I really dig about this is at 3:00 for example, where the hanging fist is so close to the green rocks, the same tones of green from the rocks are showing up in the fist and wrist area like there's green bounce light affecting the shadows in that area. Very subtle, but also really damn cool.
I really think that this is the best or maybe most important video on your channel. Observation and analysis are the most important aspects of any art related skill. Respect for talking about it.
Because of you I am now back on collecting Warhammer and spending hours in painting as my new hobby! Thanks for bringing great content as usual Squidmar!
iv just started Warhammer painting since december. your channel is so informative. iv analysed so many of other peoples youtube videios before I started and they were abit off putting. your vids are great. they really put things into prespective.
Something I thought when you were looking but it was not mentioned. Looking at other miniatures is great but also the individual material and getting photo referances. The example of the leather, search for images of old leather, you get many examples of different textures colours patterns and maybe an idea how the material will react in different situations and lighting. Then it is just a case of adapting that to the scale.
I took your advice to always challenge myself with every miniature to heart. Since I watch your channel I improved a lot. Thank you for that!
I would never have thought of looking at pics in that way. Thank you
Thx for the love as always mate ♥️
I just recently found your channel as I’m stepping into the miniature painting world for the game Infinity. I have found your videos so helpful, inspiring and I love the fact you do videos like this one. It’s a nice way to expand awareness, appreciation, skill and overall enjoyment for this amazing hobby. I’m so grateful to have people like yourself to learn from. Thank you!
I’ve been watching you from the very start, and this is by far the most informative topic. All I have ever done, being that I am semi self taught. Is look at pictures and try and replicate them until I’m happy with my own concept. It’s helps me progress more than anything else. Happy to see your channel doing so well.
Thank you for highlighting these mind blowing painters. I’m absolutely blown away by their work!
I feel some things might have been lost in translation...but my take away from this was this is OPTIONAL. When you feel like you are ready or want to learn more about how to paint better THEN you will need to slow down and analyze. Whether that be breaking down others work in the method shown here, a new painting technique, or perspective on how light behaves to achieve the vision you have in your head for a piece. To actually grow and take information on board, and be able to use it, requires conscious effort. Which hopefully will lead to understanding in theory and then through practice. The method shown is not required or the only way. But it is another potential tool in the box. Thanks Emil for presenting another alternate perspective for how to potentially get better!👍🏻
I decided to get my first few miniatures after watching your channel and I have immediately fallen in love with the hobby. All the tutorials you’ve done helped me out so much, and my first miniature was a wonderful success, I wish I could show you and get your feedback on how I could do better with the tools I have
Awesome illustration. Nice art. Thanks for sharing. I will continue to support you. 🎨✨✨
Very good info. Great painters can paint anything..for most of us, starting with a well detailed figure is important. I've painted miniatures for years.. ( Still not good at it.) We started with military subjects which actually limited us as we were trying to accurately portray /imply the uniform . Fantasy figures gave us a chance to expand that. The last few years have produced some amazing artists and in 30MM !! ! I do wish there were more fantasy figures in about 60mm..That is the best overall size for me. ( I would probably like 30mm more if the prices were lower..it is plastic after all .) I got a lot of my inspiration on colors from fantasy art.. like Frazetta. But now there are miniature painters that inspire. Thanks for this talk.
The art and the final products came out really good! Such a great thing that we have resources out there that are so accessible that if you want to pursue creating something and bringing it to life, you can! I'll be printing these busts up for fun this weekend!
I really like the bright color on the earlobes simulating transparency when the light hits it
I totally agree with the fact we don't take enough time to look at something, understand what we see, and most importantly; learn something.
It's truly amazing when a mini looks like a painting that came to life...
Excellent video!! This is how every artist in any medium improves. There used to be a magazine called Warhammer Visions that was basically just painted minis without all the BS in White Dwarf. It was AMAZING. I stared at some of those shots for hours. Especially the Golden Demon winners. Now, if only I had the time to really practice, LOL.
I’m really enjoying this channel, lots of theory and concepts I’ve never really thought about when painting. I’m subscribed to many other Miniature painting channels but this one is really different. Great content.
Great message. Slowing down and paying attention is something we can ALL stand to do more often. And not just with this hobby either.
The color picker can be really useful for determining what glazes are used over a dominant color because a lot of times the variation in hue on a model is very subtle and desaturated
I feel like 75% of the reason you made this video is to stop people form asking you which paints you use ;) Love the content man, keep it up.
PS: Your music choices are amazing and add so much to the video.
After 12 years away I'm getting back into the hobby. I've been watching RUclips CC's vids and absorbing loads of stuff.
I've always known that the act of picking colors is a skill in itself....this video definately proves that!!!
I've been painting miniatures since 1988 and I never stop learning and trying new methods to further my skill in the craft.
Thank you. Really miss painting miniatures. It has been nearly 30 years since I last painted anything. I still remember citadels first foray into plastic minis, a dwarf if I remember correctly
It's just like looking at a art piece and knowing what is going on with the brush strokes and composition. I love warhammer because it has alot of iconography , sorta like the baroque era paintings.
It would be amazing if there was a masterclass from one of these painters. Thank you so much for sharing your own knowledge and processes!
Top Tip: PAINT MORE MINIS
Wait, sorry, wrong channel.
Epic I hear heavy metal a lot throughout the day. Spices things up a bit.
Painting is a visual medium, so use your vision to get better at painting. I suggest taking photos of different textures outside to find the "click" of how materials look like under different lighting, and how they age. Whenever I try NMM (poorly), I always grab a bunch of utensils and metal objects, and use them as rough guides on how some shapes would reflect light. A good reference can be half the paintjob.
Firstly. love the channel.
Second, when you spoke about comparing the colour on the screen to a paint bottle. the colours will not add up, trust me, I work as a digital printer. But what you can do is save the colour swatches the websites provide in PMS colour format. and either save them in a photoshop file and use it for quick reference or save them as swatch colours in photoshop itself.
I've been painting minis for nearly 20 years and don't consider myself a pro painter, maybe when I get some free time ill practice these tips in particular.
Keep up the great work!
That Death Guard marine struck me as especially good. I loved the fact that you can still see the numeral for the fourteenth legion on his pauldron, even though he's been a Nurgle worshiping plague monster for 10,000 years. You don't see that often with Chaos Space Marines.
Great video! I think at 7:17 where you're talking about the colour on the miniature being different on different sides, the back image was photographed with a different white balance. The background changes to be more blue and green. The camera was probably set on auto white balance and changed between shots because there was more pink (skin) being interpreted by the sensor so it compensated by adding blue and green to get a neutral tone.
Hey mate, yes theres a little difference in WB, but if you check on the other one from the back, you can see that the parts that are from the other side are clearly more blue.
another tip for matching colors is using the citadel paint app to match the color on the screen, and then using the hobby color converter app to compare the citadel paint to all the other brands to really match it up.
One real important thing on the troll that most people miss is that the mini has an overall split complementary, or even triadic tone. The rock is a blue-green, while the troll is a somewhat violet-pink, with highlights of yellow orange. This gets back to the color wheel and good color design. It doesn't have to be bright orange and blue.. it could be deep blue shadows and a warm orange-white of a fire glow.
The Horse was also a good example of triadic. Mostly red and blue with a some golds and yellow greens. The next one has a great dual split complementary. All of these are winners because their overall color composition makes great use of the basics of color theory. Even if you have a blue Space Marine, you don't need a yellow and blue marine, you could put warm orangish-yellow tints to shadows on the base and the highlights.. red-orange flames and golds. Balance a little more with violet in shadows on the armor to offset the yellow and golds. This gets you your compliment of blues on one end and oranges on the other side.
Also, don't forget that contrast in brightness and saturation are important, too. Don't keep the whole mini super-saturated (like GW tends to do), instead mix high and low saturation colors. Or at the least, a high-saturation Marine with a low saturation base and dirt on the armor.
I'd encourage people to look up good videos on classical painting and artwork color theory.. not basic videos, but deep dives.
Rather than miniatures they look more like 2d paintings. I realised while watching this video that good painted miniatures dictate it's own light direction and painting the shadows instead of having the model flat in colour with natural light and shadows. Truly next level.
This space marine paint job is just beyond perfect. I cant even imagine the time it would take to paint a full army at this level... I mean I tried real hard to paint my bloody roses army the best I could with my mediocre skills (turned out pretty cool thanks to squidmar and other youtubers amazing tips).. it almost fully done and it took me maybe what? 400 hours or so i dunno? It would legit take me thousands of hours to paint at this level (considering I even could.. which is not the case at all haha)
Mind open!😁 Loved your "visit" into Sergio Calvo's livestream the other day. Sergio and I are planning to visit you June 25 for Midsommar. Sadly, he & I will leave our German Shepherds at home because you have a RIDICULOUS quarantine in Sweden. Even if I tried to fake my boy as a "Service Dog" (which would be unethical, but he can 100% pull off...🤣❤🐾). You rock, Emil!!! Get two bedrooms ready, one for Sergio & his family, one for me. Or just a corner for me where I can roll out a sleeping bag....🤣💙💛💙🤣
Rediuculous quarantine? I don't think we have any quarantine in sweden, nor have we during the entire pandemic lol :P
@@SquidmarMiniatures What? I'm talking about a DOG QUARANTINE. You don't have that? Do you like beautiful, extremely well behaved German Shepherd Dogs? Because Sergio Calvo and I will bring our German Shepherds when we visit you June 25th for Midsommar. He needs at least one bedroom for his family. I can settle for a corner with my sleeping bag. My German Shepherd, Andreas, can curl up next to me. He's a Hospital Therapy Dog, great with kids (bad with Chihuahuas). I'll let Sergio know right away, no worries about Dog Quarantine. Also: what dog do YOU have? ALL THE GREATEST PAINTERS HAVE A DOG. If you don't, Sergio & I will help you find a great one when we visit. June 25. You have months to prepare. Im bringing high quality towels, linens, and expensive booze. That's what ALL my Swedish relatives seem to like
...🤣🤣🤣
@@SquidmarMiniatures I'm laughing and being silly. But I really DO miss Swedish Midsommar. And you absolutely SHOULD invite Sergio Calvo. He'd LOVE it!!! And just in case someone gets drunk and hits their head, you SHOULD invite me also. I'm a Critical Care Nurse, former Army Medic. German Shepherd optional, but he's a lot of fun, too.
The OSL on the troll hand reflecting the color of the stone was nice!
The red/blue on the Nighthaunt is absolutely stunning. Wow.
I come from traditional art spectrum and I’ve never painted a miniature, but when you look at art history, painters and artists do a lot learn from copying other masters... I did as well when I learned drawing. 😀 So it’s totally legit that you’ll do look at other painter’s work!
i draw alot as well. its been 25 years now and i can confidently say that i can just draw almost everything straight to the paper and be content with it. but straight copying from others is what almost everyone does at the start. and i did too. and i did it alot. what also kinda grinds my gears is people talking about talent when they see something like this. a spark of talent might have helped me but its 99% practice. pretty sure its the same for painting minis. when i draw a lion and people are like "oh, look at that talent" and you think to yourself "dude, i drew about 1000 of these till this point and the first quarter of them looked like smushed disabled pandas... its practice, not talent" :D
A couple of weeks ago a friend posted an aggressor he painted on fb and I thought "hey I used to paint better than this" but that was 15-17 years ago, when I hadn't discovered girls yet XD I googled warhammer and start looking at whats new (farewell, wh fantasy), thats when youtube started suggesting me your vids, Squidmar. I have to say there are a lot a good advices in all of them. This one particularly, priceless tips and truths are said in here. Good job, you got a great channel.
Great video!
I'd love to see you take some of these observations and make a video or two about actually working through applying them to your own piece.
For context:
This week I have been attempting to recreate a similar looking stone to the green one you showed, as well as a few pieces by Sergio Calvo, Ben Komets, Roman Lapatt, and even Sam Lenz... and It's not quite as easy as colour matching. I just can't get those green rocks to look how I want!
This is a great, GREAT video! Difference between looking and actually SEE. BRAVO! Greetings from Italy :)
These paintjobs are sooo amazing
Great video. Excellent reminder to truly look at what you see, not what you think you see.
Big help, I've been working on a dark angel and I couldn't get the highlight colour, but using the technique of picking the colours from a picture really helped
Aythami Alonso has a step by step video tutorial up on his website for that marine. It's one of the best tutorials i have ever watched
13:40 - I think the bright orange there on his ear was trying to emulate how the skin looks orange when light goes through it, especially on thin parts like the ears which are basically a membrane.
Loving your videos! Keep up the great work.
This. Looking at minis people have put work into and their styles is cool.
Just started painting minis and your channel has helped a lot!
Thanks again. Great tip I will definitely be using moving forward.
Inspiring to see these figures, just don't compare yourself them. You're not them, you're yourself. I've gotten inspiration just browsing through the 40k sub
After seeing this i really want to start practice on different stone colours. I always think that the pure grey with a very light grey highlight is okay, but doesn´t get the right feel to it. The Approach on this video is exactly what i have started doing the last few weeks, but for my the most usefull thing was:
Take your time! We often scroll to fast over things, because we want to see all that amazing stuff. But lets take the time to actually understand what we see! That will honur the artist even more :)
Great perspective that we can all learn from regardless of experience/talent level, Great Vid.
It's like an optical illusion when minis are painted to this level, it seems like it's a computer render or something, my mind can't comprehend that they're miniatures.
You are one of the most interesting and intelligent people on the internet.
It's great to see models and artists to aspire to.
Thank you for your inspiring content. Your video help many to bridge the gap between beginner and pro!
What a brilliant idea, to use that tool! Amazing, thank you so much, Emil! :)
Watching these videos are the most enjoyable and ego crushing things
Verdigris can definitely be a bluish-green turquoise color especially around salt water, god nows I've cleaned enough off brass seawater valves in the Navy and hot sauce gets it off really well.
That space marine is amazing. It looks like a drawing. Incredible!
Love this video, iv been doing these tricks for quite some time. So glad you were able to make a video explaining it to everyone. Great job
When I see these levels of artists works I think digital illustration, it always amazes me when my brain eventually comprehends its a photo of a mini.
I've had that experience a few times too😂
Thank you your video, I learn something also this time. I’m improving every time.
Really helpful video although I just started last october. Yesterday I finally used a wet palette and a proper army painter brush for the first time and damn the difference to the other brushes I used is crazy. Was a lot of fun painting trajann valoris :)
Thanks for the great video, Emil. The tip of using PS's colour picker or the adobe tool is such a good one. I hadn't heard of that online tool, so am keen to use it!
13:00 - For future reference, you could put them right next to each other so that we can look at them simultaneously.
Uncle Atom did a similar video today...this is a popular theme this week it seems :)
I agree that it is helpful to analyze pro painter's work...but only if you aim at display standard painting. All those highlights and effects would be lost at tabletop distance, but the colours would still be visible.
Skill is essentially effort, effort to learn, analyse, practice and put in time, anyone can achieve skill with effort in any field of life
Amazing Amil! Have to buy some non-GW figurines to improve my painter skill. Thanks a lot.
I think my favourite takeaway from looking harder at the Troll, is how the colour of the rocks reflects in the shadows towards the bottom of the troll.
the orange in the ogres ear is light shining through, like when you put a flashlight under you finger in the dark. details like that are super important for cgi artists as well to make skin look realistic
This is how I taught myself to paint, I started with WD pictures in 2001, then CMoN. I still do it today.
Great video! Never thought of using the sampler tools. Learned a lot. Ever thought of using your skills in maybe building a rusty hot rod in the 24 scale? Might be fun to watch
Emil, I see the highlights on those models and I wonder how much is the light source being used to photograph the model and how much of the highlight is actually painted on. Could you discuss this please? I'm certainly looking at light a lot differently nowadays but I want to know the difference between what's a light source and what's paint?
Wonderful insights and lots to learn from this. Thanks for getting me to look at paint schemes from a different POV
Great video, never thought of that being a tool for becoming better at painting. Thank you! :)
I love the content you put on this channel. However, being a beginner / amateur, it really feels like a lot of the content here is either for a fun watch or to help people who are much more advanced than I. I am nowhere near to a level where it would help me to analyze at this level. I do go out and look at more beginner stuff and it's fun to see where it could go or get color ideas. But I have yet to find a channel that can help a noob like myself much.
Probably the closest to what I seem to find useful has been the Crafting Muse who does painting live streams but she is backing off on that soon. What I really would love is to find videos that walk me through from beginning to end at a more beginner level rather than show off advanced techniques I am just not ready for. Basically someone leading me by the nose.
For example, I am simply struggling with layering and getting the paint on with some transparency - it all just comes out as solid colors and trying to get any kind of transition or gradient has me stumped. It makes me feel like a ham fisted idiot. Looking at other great painters and the cool things they do just makes me feel even worse.
Anyway, just letting you know what this one viewer would love to see. Maybe this is not your gig. But if you want to help beginners like myself, maybe this will give you something to think on.
For picking and matching a colour, the android app 'Hobby Color Converter' is great. It uses your phone camera and gives you the matching paint colour. You can also add your paint collection to it and when you need to match a colour it will give you equivalents across the paint brands.
I cant believe that troll is a miniature. I thought it was some very well done concept or finished 2d art. Incredible.
i suck. just started mini's. your videos have made me realise i won't be great from the start THANKS!
Very nice video Emil, thanks for your analysis.
I was wondering if you ever look to Jeremie Bonamant or Alan Carasco's work?
I AGREE, REFERENCE IS THE WAY TO GO. EVERY TIME
Great vid. Defo an inspiring bunch of models!
Your really gunning for this Golden Demon dude, good luck!
This was really fascinating!
Great video with an excellent lesson.
